BECAUSE BUSINESS IS NO LONGER CHARACTERISED BY A STABLE AND PREDICTABLE ENVIRONMENT.

BECAUSE INTERACTION BETWEEN COMPANIES IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER.

Since September 2012, The ESADE MBA has a new home; a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility that represents the natural step in our growth.

Directly connected by public transport to central Barcelona in under 30 minutes, and adjacent to ESADE Creapolis, a hub for Open and Cross Innovation, the possibilities for synergy in this new campus are endless.

ESADE Creapolis houses more than 60 companies from a wide variety of sectors, making this an optimum environment for innovation, knowledge exchange and networking.

Moving into innovationWE ARE...

BECAUSE INNOVATION IS THE KEY.

05

DiversityWith 95% of our student population made up of international students, The

ESADE MBA’s teamwork-oriented approach allows our students to achieve greater global perspective working alongside colleagues from

more than 45 countries, extending to 70 nationalities in conjunction with the MSc and BBA programmes already based on campus.

A truly enriching experience and a perfect opportunity to enhance your business network from day one of your MBA.

CollaborationFrom admissions process to graduation day and beyond, at ESADE we live and breathe collaboration. Our programme is built around this concept, fostering teamwork as a top business practice and a means of learning alongside international classmates from a whole host of professional and cultural backgrounds. Long after graduation, we keep in touch with our alumni who work with us on different projects and attend ESADE networking events across the globe. As a select but intensely diverse programme, you will know your peers well and forge a trusted business network.

Flexibility Our MBA allows participants to choose the length of study: 12, 15 or 18 months, depending on whether you wish to opt for exchange and/or internship before graduating. Not only that, but you don’t have to decide until after the the first nine months, so it really is a tailor-made experience. As a select programme with a reduced number of exceptionally talented

individuals, we are able to provide you with the most bespoke service around, with Careers Services helping you define your individual

career path, assisting you at every step of your decisionmaking process and equipping you for the next steps in your career.

Why The ESADE MBA?

07

Career Acceleration Strategy: Internships (available on the 15-month Corporate or 18-month formats) enable participants to transition their career development into a new functional area, sector or country. Additionally, employers often use internships as a testing platform for potential future hires.

Global Outlook: Our Exchange Programme (available on the 15-month Academic or 18-month formats) allows students to increase their international exposure. Irrespective of the option selected, all participants start the Full Time MBA at the same time and are required to complete the exact same number of credits.

Moving into flexibilityChoose the length of your life-changing experience: 12-15-18 months

Students arrive at ESADE with a set of objectives, which often evolve during the programme as new opportunities present themselves. The MBA frequently changes participants’ perspectives, the reason behind our ultimate flexible MBA format, allowing the individual to decide on the length of their MBA (12, 15 or 18 months) in May at the end of Term 3. Once students know what their options are for exchange or internship, or both, they can choose the format that best fits their professional career objectives.

When deciding whether to pursue the Full Time MBA in 12, 15 or 18 months, the main factors to evaluate are:

Before beginning my MBA, I already had a clear goal: to become an entrepreneur. With this in mind, I decided to take full advantage of the core courses and electives and the wide variety of projects organised throughout the MBA to build on my entrepreneurial skills. The flexible format of the programme allowed me to choose the 12-month track and return to Taiwan at the earliest opportunity to start new projects. I am currently working on a mobile application within the healthcare sector, a project stemming from the IBM/Novartis NCD Challenge case competition in which my team was among the winning teams globally. The MBA has truly been a transforming experience.

Mengchi Chen (Taiwan) Full Time MBA Class of 2013

I decided to do an MBA because I wanted to broaden the scope of my knowledge with a new challenge and an MBA would help me gain the skills needed to take me to the next level. The flexible format length at ESADE and the 15-month track was perfect for me because I didn’t want to be out of the job market for two full years, but I still wanted the chance to do an internship. I accomplished my main goal, as I formed part of the intern programme at Apple. I spent 12 weeks in California working within Operations. I’m sure it wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t been here at ESADE.

The single most important reason why I applied to ESADE is the flexibility they offer to students. When I had to choose between one of three tracks (12, 15 or 18 months), making the decision was really easy. I already knew I was going to be doing my internship at American Express London and because I wanted to specialise in finance, I had decided to do my exchange at Chicago Booth. In 18 months I will have the chance to live in three cities, study and network at two different universities and gain valuable professional experience.

I was looking for a flexible MBA programme that would enable me to further accentuate my business acumen across all functional areas of business. To reach my primary objectives, I tailored my MBA through internships with Vodafone Essar India and Siine Ltd, allowing me to understand the opportunities and challenges for both a multinational telecom company and an entrepreneurial venture within communications. I also carried out an exchange at Goizueta Business School, Emory University. Without a doubt I have fulfilled my expectations with my current position at adidas! Their Business Management Program is the ideal tailor-made role

for me. The two year functional and geographical rotation programme offers me the opportunity to engage in short-term projects in Finance, Operations, Sales and Marketing, thereby giving me a holistic perspective of the entire business. This is exactly what I signed up for and I couldn’t be happier.

Moving closer to core business needsInternational Family Business Lab

Under this traditional perspective, family businesses were incorrectly seen as organisations that should evolve to be “modern” and successful. Now we know that the majority of companies around the world, including many quoted companies, are family businesses. Moreover, studies show that family businesses outperform their non-family counterparts in many domains.

Family businesses are different in the way they understand management, culture, and values and how they apply it in their decision-making processes, their strategy scope, human relationships, entrepreneurial behaviour, measuring success, and many other domains.

The International Family Business Lab offers ESADE MBA students the opportunity to:

1. Connect their learnings about global management and their international and multicultural experience with the most prominent type of organisation in the world, the family business.

2. Familiarise themselves with the specifics of family businesses and their idiosyncrasies, to be able to lead family businesses in a functional way (either as an owner or as a manager).

3. Learn how to deal with their own family businesses as part of a complex system.

The Full Time MBA is an excellent opportunity for the successors of a Family Enterprise. The International Family Business Lab will offer them, in addition to the regular MBA courses, specific insights and knowledge that will enhance their MBA experience.

Family Business Lab activities include:

• General Course on Family Business Management • Specific Courses such as Managing the Boards, Family

Strategy, Family Business Transformation, etc.• Seminars and Roundtables with prominent family

business members, from different industries, roles and regions around the world, to understand the importance of forging their own paths using the Labs methodologies

• Family Business Project

Why Family Business? The classical approach to management thinking, research and practice is based on the observation of the best practices of corporations managed by professionals with dispersed ownership.

Moving closer to core business needsEntrepreneurship Programme

The course consists of two parts: EGarage

We strive to provide our students with all the resources necessary to bring their business ideas from inception to fruition and understand that environment is key to making this happen. The EGarage is a new space built with entrepreneurship in mind, a launch pad for new businesses and a meeting area for business students and in-house entrepreneurs, lending itself perfectly to brainstorming activities, private meetings and presentations. Adaptable to suit all users, the EGarage, is the ideal space to take business ideas to the next level.

Entrepreneurship: EGarage• Work zone and brainstorming space.• Networking and chill-out zone.• Kitchen area.

Innovation: I-School• Teaching zone: capacity for 40/50 participants• Work zone with six separate spaces.

With new businesses being launched by graduates annually, ESADE Business School is proud of its long heritage in Entrepreneurship. Given our strength in this area, Entrepreneurship is a mandatory course that runs parallel to the core curriculum. Working in teams, the Entrepreneurship programme will teach candidates how to analyse all facets of their business ideas. The learning experience is applicable to entrepreneurs intent on launching their own business upon graduation, managers responsible for developing innovative projects for their companies as well as Venture Capitalists or Financial Analysts.

The entrepreneurial energy of ESADE MBA students is astonishing. Many have started their own firms or worked in growth companies around the world before coming to ESADE. This wealth of experiences is the basis for lively classroom discussions and the sharing of hands-on insights which helps them in working on real-life venture challenges. During the MBA, students can assess business opportunities, find business partners and launch new ventures. Every year, new ventures result from the entrepreneurial energy of ESADE MBA students.

Development of the Business Plan

Once Business Plans have been presented, a board of specialists will select five outstanding projects with great developmental potential that will have access to ESADE Creapolis facilities and services after Graduation to help get the initial business phases off the ground.

ESADE’s Entrepreneurship course supported the development of our business idea – an innovative technology increasing access to carbon markets – and represented an excellent opportunity to apply the full range of skills we developed during The ESADE MBA. The assistance and feedback we received from professors, tutors and fellow students were critical to the launch of Offset Options after graduation, as was the exposure to a range of Business Angels and Venture Capitalists through the ESADE network. Some years later, we have some big clients under our belt and continue to reap the benefits of our ESADE connection, such as working with U2 to offset the carbon emissions on their world tour. We’ve just hired another recent ESADE graduate and are preparing to bring on our second cohort of MBA summer interns to support us as Offset Options enters the next stage of growth.

Olaf Petzschmann (Germany) and Luke Miller (Australia/UK)Full Time MBA, Class of 2009Co-Founders of Offset Options

When I came to ESADE, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur but did not have any concrete ideas. My involvement in a wide variety of clubs and activities, including managing the Entrepreneurship Club, proved to be the perfect tool to network, learn and get a feel for the different sectors. My career path took a 180 degree turn from the IT industry to Life Sciences, resulting in a company focused on internationalisation of small and medium-sized life sciences companies. Farmantra, a Barcelona based consulting company, is focused on international business development for a carefully selected portfolio of clients in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry with a particular focus on small and medium-sized firms. In the two years since graduation, we have grown both in numbers, with consultants in both India and Spain, and revenue, proving that our business model works!

Moving into a collaborative environmentESADE Creapolis

Created by ESADE in 2009, ESADE Creapolis currently houses the innovation and R&D departments from more than 60 companies. All of these organisations are driven by a common objective: to accelerate innovation. After years of study, findings indicate that in order to foster effective innovation, it is not enough for people to collaborate occasionally, they must share time in both formal and informal environments; ESADE Creapolis is founded on this premise of coexistence to foster collaboration.

In this stimulating environment, you, as a Full Time MBA participant, will have direct contact with innovative and creative companies as they pursue a range of activities, from creating marketing and company strategic plans and working on internships to participating in company events or simply sharing ideas over a coffee. Not only is The ESADE MBA one of the top MBAs in the world, but it is also the first to share facilities with an active and innovative business community.

One of the main “rules” here at ESADE Creapolis is to always introduce yourself to anyone you don’t know. New opportunities and projects come naturally in an environment specially designed for interaction. That was the main reason for us to move to ESADE Creapolis: the opportunity to share facilities with companies that are making innovation happen and creating new products and services of the highest value for society.

Career acceleration and reorientation are key motivators behind deciding to pursue an MBA. Choosing which career direction to steer towards is one of the most important decisions participants will have to make during The ESADE MBA, which is why Career Services assists participants throughout the entire process.

Strategic Advising

Our experience demonstrates that the probability of participants fulfilling their professional ambitions increases through structured and focused job search strategies that are implemented early on. With this in mind, each student has access to Career Advisors that provide strategic advice on all aspects of the job search process. Through one–to-one coaching sessions, our experienced Career Advisors help participants identify specific career goals and action plans to meet them.

Career Training and Skills Development

One of Career Services’ main focuses is to help our Full Time MBA students develop a successful career, maximising their knowledge acquisition and skills development, taking into account their individual interests and needs. This process is structured as follows:

• CIC (Career Impact Cycle): one of the programme’s core subjects involving mandatory sessions pooling knowledge and skills, considered a fundamental base from which to increase the probabilities of being successful from a Career Development perspective.

• Career Thursdays: dedicated afternoons, from January to March, where voluntary sessions give additional and relevant knowledge and skills to MBA students focused on personal interests and needs.

Winning the adidas Case Competition has been incredible, as we put a lot of effort into coming up with innovative ideas that provide answers to the challenges we were set. It’s really been worth it, because not only were we awarded first prize in the competition, but we were given the chance to continue working with adidas in a summer internship. This was precisely one of the goals we had in mind when we started the MBA: being able to take on exciting challenges in a global company.

When I made the decision to study for my MBA I had three goals in mind: first of all I was looking for a real “life experience” and eventually find a job in an emerging market. Secondly, I was expecting to extend my network. Thirdly, I intended to become fluent in Spanish. ESADE gave me the opportunity to successfully accomplish all three. The ESADE MBA opened the door for me to the recruiting process with CITI Latin America. The Citizens LatAm programme is a two-year programme, which will give me the opportunity to develop four rotations of six months each in four different businesses and countries within the Latin American Region. My first project will be in Sao Paulo where I will develop a strategy for the Treasury and Trade department with the aim to increase CITI’s penetration in its pool of Brazil-based international clients. The 18 months I spent in the programme represent definitely one of the best periods of my life from both a personal and professional perspective.

Emanuele Marca (Italy)CITI - Management AssociateFull Time MBA, Class of 2012

My main objective when starting the MBA was to change my career path; my background was in engineering and therefore highly technical and I lacked the knowledge to succeed in a business environment. I also wanted to live and study in a new country where I could learn a new language, within a highly international programme. The ESADE MBA is very comprehensive and I was able to gain a lot of knowledge from the start, complementing courses in finance, entrepreneurship and leadership among others, with elective courses in sales, negotiations and digital strategy. With an exchange to Singapore to gain an understanding of business in Asia, a consultancy internship with British Telecom thanks to the help and guidance I received from Careers Services, handling multiple responsibilities as part of the MBA Student Association, and the global perspective I gained from my classmates, I feel well equipped to take on my new role after the MBA!

Moving into the heart of knowledgeFaculty

One of my main objectives on returning to the classroom was to transmit, in my home country, my experience of historical, groundbreaking events that I have had the privilege to live. This, no doubt, represents the biggest change in my life, but politics and education go hand in hand. The Inspiring Futures sessions with MBA students are an experience like none other; with more than 40 nationalities represented, participants make interesting geopolitical reflections which make for rich and fascinating debate.

The ESADE MBA’s student body is internationally and professionally diverse. In this respect, I am challenged as a professor to know each student well in order to leverage their cultural perspectives and professional expertise. As professors, our ultimate goal is to create an environment where the students give to each other, where the full potential and richness of the student body can be cultivated. Students and teachers become equal partners in the educational process; everyone has something valuable to give – everyone grows. Teaching at ESADE Business School is an absolute privilege!

The MBA Student Association (MBASA) is a student managed body which reinforces the MBA community by organising a broad range of educational, professional, cultural, social and recreational activities.

Given the number of events and clubs under the MBASA umbrella, students are able to get actively involved. MBASA encourages participants with innovative ideas to submit, develop and take ownership of new club proposals.

A Moving communityMBA Student Association

Focus: Consulting Club

Students and companies have a close relationship during the MBA and there are many initiatives that are possible thanks to this collaboration. One of the most successful initiatives is the Case Book. The Consulting Club has released the first-ever ESADE Case Book sponsored by The Boston Consulting Group in collaboration with Career Services. It has already proven to be an excellent preparation resource for case interviews and development of analytical thinking.

Other initiatives are:• Trends in Consulting and Financial Services

Industries: A Presentation by Deloitte• In-house Consulting versus External Consulting,

Presentation by Deutsche Bank• Wipro Event “The Consulting Pitch”• Mock interview workshop with Johnson & Johnson• Acciona Case: A school wide case competition

during the first semester tackling the balance between economic, social, and environmental stakeholders.

Business clubs

Business clubs are managed by the MBA Student Association (MBASA) and are responsible for leveraging their position at ESADE to create learning, networking and exposure opportunities for members. Boards are elected democratically and the election for key positions is often fiercely competitive. Club events provide a good platform for firms who wish to recruit or gain on-campus exposure. Each Club has one Associate Director from Career Services assigned to work closely with them.

• Clean Tech• Consulting• Design & Innovation• Emerging Markets• Entrepreneurship• Finance• Healthcare• Investment Fund

• Luxury Goods & Services• Marketing• Media• Net Impact• Operations• Sports Business• Technology• Women in Business

Social Clubs

Social life is also an important part of the MBA experience. There are many social clubs MBA students can join: Better Halves, Photography, French, Salsa, Spanish, Sports, Wine & Spirits, Xtreme Sports.

A Moving communityA taste of Business Clubs events

The best way to intensify your MBA experience is to get involved. Life doesn’t stop outside the classroom at ESADE. During my first year at ESADE I participated in the annual G-20 summit in Cannes, representing my home country, Saudi Arabia. I co-organised the first ESADE trek to Saudi Arabia for more than 25 MBA students, and co-led the marketing efforts of ESADE’s annual student-led Emerging Markets Conference. Make the most out of your MBA experience and get involved. The opportunities are limitless and however you decide to do it, your involvement will make a difference.
