The Joy of Salvation Makes Trials Bearable

(1 Peter 1:6-9)• We may rejoice in our salvation even while

being grieved by various trials. (1:6, 8)– What are examples of different trials we face?– How long must these trials be endured?– How does the length of time we must endure

afflictions compare to the duration of our salvation? (2 Corinthians 4:17)

– How does the severity of our sufferings compare to the splendor of our salvation? (Romans 8:18)

The Salvation Esteemed by Prophets & Angels Demands Our Holiness

(1 Peter 1:10-16)• The Prophets inquired and searched carefully

as to when and how their prophecies would be fulfilled (1:10-11; Matthew 13:17)– The prophets were told that their message was not for

them, but for us (1:12; cf. Hebrews 11:40)– This is the very message preached in the inspired

gospel (Acts 3:18, 24; 10:43; 26:22-23)

• Angels also desire “to look into” our salvation– “To look” is from παρακυψσαι (parakupsai).

It is rendered “stooping down,” and “stooped down” in Luke 24:12 and John 20:5,11.

The Salvation Esteemed by Prophets & Angels Demands Our Holiness

(1 Peter 1:10-16)• Since we have such a wondrous salvation,

we should “therefore…” – Gird up the loins of our mind– Be sober– Rest our hope fully on the coming Christ

• We do these things as “obedient children”– Not conforming to our old ignorant desires– But emulating the holiness of our Father

(Ephesians 5:1)

The Precious Price of Salvation(1 Peter 1:17-21)

• If we “call on the Father” we should pass the time of our sojourn (foreign residence) in fear!– For our Father judges each man’s work

impartially (Romans 2:11; 2 Corinthians 5:10)• We have been redeemed at an immense cost

– The word translated redeemed (λυτροω) means “to be liberated by the payment of a ransom.”

– Jesus’ life paid the ransom (1:19; Mark 10:45) • The price of our redemption carries with it important

implications and expectations for our CONDUCT! (1:15, 17, 18, Titus 2:14)

• The Father had determined to pay our ransom before the foundation of the world (1:20; Revelation 13:8). It was done “for you!”

• The ransom God paid and the resurrection He empowered compel us to place all of our hope and faith in God! (1:21)

God’s Word: Salvation’s Incorruptible Seed(1 Peter 1:22-25)

• We have been purified by obeying the truth.– Our purified hearts enable pure, fervent and

unfeigned love for one another (1:22; Rom.12:9)• We have been born again by the germination

of the incorruptible seed of God’s word (1:23; Luke 8:11)– Since the word endures forever, those who have

been begotten by it endure forever as well.
