    DONT QUIT

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,When the road youre trudging seems all uphill,When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,When care is pressing you down a bitRest, if you must, but dont you quit

Life is queer with its twists and turns,As every one of us sometimes learns,

    And many a failure turns about,When he might have won had he stuck it out;

dont give up though the pace seems slow--You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,It seems to a faint and faltering man,

Often the struggler has given up,When he might have captured the victors cup,

And he learned too late when the night slipped down,How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,It may be near when it seems so far,

So stick to the ght when youre hardest hit--Its when things seem worst that you must not quit.

I am so excited to introduce to you this magazine entitled Redeemed. I hope that you nd it encouraging and uplifting as well as entertaining.

This magazine has its birth out of tragedy, but has blossomed into this publication for the incarcerated. It is a product of one womans desire to encourage those who nd themselves in jail or prison.

Her name is Barbara Walshaw and I would like to thank her for her vision, determination and her ability to let a bad situation in her life turn into a ministry for the Lord.

The purpose for this magazine is to help provide the hope, joy and freedom that only the saving grace of Jesus Christ can provide. "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." John 8:36

I hope that you enjoy it and nd it a help in your life.

    For his glory,

Do you ever feel like giving up? Do your circumstances weigh you down? Being a Christian doesnt mean life is going to be easy, nor does it mean nothing will go wrong. We will live in the same world as we did before our salvation, but now we have an overcomer, and a hope for better things to come.

To live in hope gives new meaning to all situations, and believing is the key to hope. Nothing is impossible with God. Nothing is too big. Even in your darkest hour, dont give up hope. God is bigger than any of your struggles and he watches over you every moment of your lives. He will never leave you and will bring you into that place of restoration and healing. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and hang on to the hope you can have in him.

    Christy Siggee

For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel: which is come unto you. Colossians: 1:5-6

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord. Psalms: 31:24

Many of us believe that only strenuous daily exercise will keep our hearts healthy. However, a new body of research shows that even a little physical activity performed on regular basis can lower our risk of cardiovascular disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the United States.

By releasing endorphins and elevating the levels of feel-good hormones like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, exercise is a great mood lifter.

Constant tiredness can be a real downer. Physical activity invigorates and energizes, giving you a physical and emotional boost.

Insomnia can lead to anxiety and stress, but exercise has been shown in studies to improve sleep quality and duration.

Chronic pain can lead to inactivity, which, in turn, could cause depression. However certain exercises are effective in reducing

aches, soreness and muscular tension, resulting in suppler joints and a better range ofmovement.

Keeping it simple start with a 10 min circuit 3 times a week

Perform each exercise for 30 seconds to complete 1 set repeat 3 times. Rest for 60 seconds in between each set.

    1. Jumping jacks

    2. Pushups- do as many as you can for 30 seconds.

    3. Squat Jumps- squat down making sure your knees do not fall forward over your toes and jump straight up.

    4. Dips- use a chair with hands on the edge facing forward drop your body down until your arms are at a 45 degree angle, make sure your rear end is within 1 from the chair, push back up to starting position.

  • September/October 2012 Redeemed 5

    5. Mountain Climber- place hands on oor shoulder with apart and alternate pulling knees in toward chest.

    6. Plank- place hands on oor and make a straight line from the heels of your feet to the tops of your shoulders keeping your head in line with your spine.

    7. Forward Lunges- step forward making both your front and back leg at a 45 degree angle, step back and repeat with other leg

    8. Squats- lower your rear end down to a chair position stand up. Make sure toes are facing forward and feet are hips distance apart.

    9. Butt Kicks- standing position kick your heals up trying to kick your butt.

Remember you only have one body take

    care of it!

ALL of us have had days when nothing is working right. Sometimes we feel that we have failed when we really havent; other times we do fail. All of us fall short in some areas. But that isnt the whole story.

I remember well a saying I heard many times: Failure isnt nal. If you are a Christian, there is always hope. Romans 8:28 says all things work together by God for his purpose. All things, include more than just our successes and victories. You may be wondering how the pieces can ever be put back together, but God has the wisdom and power to bring things back together in an amazing way.

Failure is never nal as long as Gods grace is at work in your life.

Fan Tan is also called Dominoes and very similar to a game called Barbu. It is a very easy game to learn and play and doesnt take much time to determine a winner. Fan Tan uses a regular deck minus the jokers. The Object: To be the rst to get rid of all your cards.Rules: Determine a dealer by cutting the deck. The dealer will deal out all of the cards clockwise beginning with the player to the dealers left. Players can organize or group their cards in their hands but should not let any other play see their cards. The rst card played is always a seven and the suit does not matter. If the rst player does not have a seven then he loses a turn. This continues until a player puts down the rst seven. The next player may put down a six or eight of the same suit as the seven which was played or put down another seven in another row. If a player plays a six that card is placed above the seven but and if the player plays the eight the card is placed on the bottom. If a player has no cards to play on the Fan Tan table he passes and loses a turn. It is against the rules for a player to pass if he has a card which may be played. No strategic passing is allowed.

Strategy: There is actually strategy in the game of Fan Tan. It is about planning ahead and strategizing. The best Fan Tan players are the ones who can keep track of other players behavior and motives.Winner: The player who goes out rst.

Tips: If you have really high or low cards along with a sev-en, it is a really good idea to use the seven rst. This allows you to have time later in the game to build towards your high or low extreme. Misplac-ing sevens can ruin your game of Fan Tan. Avoid playing the control-ling cards in a game (such as sixes, sevens and eights) for as long as possible. For example, by not playing the eight, you can prevent your opponents from playing their higher cards that they are holding. Groups of cards called runs or straights are the ideal combination of cards for Fan Tan. For example if you have the four through ten of a par-ticular suit, you could play the cards in such a way that keeps your opponents from playing any cards for quite some time. Then you will be able to drop one card after another. Whenever possible use the aces and kings as your oppo-nents cant play on them.

On July 3, 2010, I was sitting on a park bench in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Most people go to the park for fun or recreation, but I was there because I had nowhere else to go. For the rst time in my life, I found myself homeless due to my drug and alcohol use. All the people I loved seemed so far away and it felt like they had all turned their back on me. Almost as if it had been ordained before the formation of time, a youth group from a local church was at the park witnessing to the people on the street. They made their way over to me and we began to talk. I dont remember everything they said, but I remember them quoting James 1:9. I knew that I had made a mess of my life trying to live it my way and I needed a Savior. That day in the park,

I gave my life, heart, and soul to my God and Savior, Jesus Christ.Being the good Christian folks that

they were, they put me on a bus back to North Carolina. Soon after arriving, I checked myself into a ve day rehab were I met a guy who had been in a program called Cross Road Rescue Mission. Being raised in the Church of God, I was a little skeptical about going into a Baptist program. Like many churches, the church that I grew up in was guilty of making people believe that all the other churchs were wrong. I noticed right off the bat that something was different about the people at Crossroads. I knew I wanted what they had. At seven a.m. on a Wednesday morning, Bro. Dusty Bracket, one of the directors, was

preaching a sermon out of the book of Isaiah. I dont remember all his points, but I remember him telling us that God would never forget us. That we have been engraved on the palms of Gods hands and nothing can ever change that. As my heart was breaking, I remember telling God that from now on I was going to put my best into this program.

As my desire for the Word grew more and more, I decided to join the Sons of God program. The Sons of God program helped my get grounded and rooted in the Word of God and is something that I will never forget. Crossroads also assisted me in going back to school. I nished my GED while I was at the Mission. Now, Im a full time student at Cleveland Community College. I also got the chance to travel and give my testimony while staying at

I was saved at the age of 14 and have been through many learning experiences and many storms, I can still say, I know my Redeemer LIVES.

I am the oldest of eight and had a father that became an alcoholic and was very abusive, needless to say, that was a story all by its self. I made some wrong choices (married to get away from home, only to be in a more intense case of abuse) that caused even more storms to follow. I really didnt think I would get out of that relationship alive, however, I did. I am the Redeemed, given a 2nd chance. I was blessed to have (at the time) married a man of my dreams (he loved the Lord and we had a busy life raising children). Even with the second chance, life is full of storms and choices. I have made good choices and bad choices, but He is always there to pick me up and gives peace where there seems to be no peace.

The latest challenges have been, going through a divorce after 25 years (because he started an internet affair and decided hed rather have that kind of life). If that wasnt tough enough, last year at the age of 63, I was diagnosed with choroidal melanoma and had to have my eye removed. Through it all, I found peace, love from my children and an un-seen hand holding mine. You see, I am the Redeemed, I have another chance (dont give up). I am going to College! I can still think, see, feel, taste, smell, walk, drive and love. Things in life happen, we learn from them and know. It will be worth it all!!!

    My Redeemer Lives!

Josh Hamilton knows what its like to feel like you have thrown it all away. The former number one pick

in baseballs amateur draft out of Raleigh, NC once sold his wifes wedding ring for cocaine. This high school phenom who received a $3.96 million signing bonus with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1999 once had Katie take out a restraining order against him. Hamilton wasted what would have been the rst ve years of his promising career on drugs and alcohol and had eight rehab stints.

At the time this article is being written, the 31-year-old Hamilton is hitting .331, tied for second in the league with 22 home runs, leads baseball with 64 RBI, is second in OPS (1.062), and leads MLB in slugging percentage at .674, while playing on the team with the best record in the big leagues. In May, Hamilton became only the 14th man to hit four home runs in a game during a week when he hit .467 with nine homers and 18 RBI. He has already won the 2010 MVP Award for the back-to-back and defending American League Champion Texas Rangers, and he hit what could have been the World Series-winning home run in the 10th inning of Game 6 last year but the Rangers could

not hold on and lost the series. In 2011, Hamiltons jersey was fourth nationwide in sales.

Hamilton is not shy in talking about what and who has turned his life around and how it got turned upside down in the rst place. He and Katie are both born-again Christians with a personal relationship with Christ. That relationship is what has allowed them to get to this point. Josh says the Holy Spirit talks to him.

Its just like talking to a friend, Hamilton said for a recent article in Sports Illustrated. But most of the time, when I stop talking is when I hear from Him. Its just the coolest thing that you can imagine. God showed me things to help me get peace and not feel like this is something thats going to be with me forever.

Former Atlanta Braves out elder and Clemson University football recruit Jeff Francouer plays for the Kansas City Royals now and was a teammate of Hamiltons in Texas. He was also interviewed for the SI article and he said that boldness and transparency is what endears people to Hamilton.

Josh owns up to it, Francouer said. A lot of peoplehide

behind it. Josh is very upfront and people appreciate that. They know hes a real person.

Francouer admires Josh personally as well. Thats a guy Id want all my kids growing up and saying, Thats my role model. Do I want them doing the things he did early? No. But the way he goes about his faith, the way hes outspoken, its good to see good things happen to good people.

Hamilton has been back in the league now for ve years and obviously had a lot of success, but he still has to deal with his demons. He gets drug-tested three times a week and has not failed one, but he has had a couple well-publicized slip-ups with alcohol. In a bar in Tempe, Arizona in 2009 and this past January in Dallas, Josh let some weak moments get the best of him and fell back into some old habits.

Theres this slow fade that leads up to it, he said. I know that side of me. I dont like that sidebut its fact that its there. I want to get caught. Because I dont want to do it.

His wife said in the piece that Satan is not going to win.

Im so thankful that God gave me the grace and patience to stick around, Katie said. Every time Josh has had a relapse, its what the enemy has used todestroy our marriage, destroy our testimonyand its the very thing that has catapulted me and Josh even more in love with Jesus. I dont

understand why the devil keeps trying itId have thought he got the memo by now.

With all the issues hes had and the brief slip-ups comes the inevitable naysayers. There are those who doubt Hamilton is a changed man and they let him know their feelings when he is out in the eld. Hamilton said the Holy Spirit asked him what Jesus did when people persecuted Him. Josh said he remembered Jesus prayed for them, and that completely changed the way he looks at it now.

Josh Hamilton will be a free agent after the season and he will most likely sign a contract offer for between $100 million and $200 million before next year. He and his wife have already started Triple Play Ministries, built an orphanage in Uganda, and sent relief to Haiti, but they want to do a lot more . And they see this potential free agent contract as the means by which to do just that. Hamilton believes that this is why he was saved: to show what the Lord can do.

The bigger it is, the more we can give away, Hamilton said. Its cool to think all the different ways you can help people by playing baseball.

Josh Hamiltons autobiography is a New York Times best seller titled Beyond Belief.

He and his wife Katie have four daughters aging from nine months to 11 years old.

You can know for sure you are on your way to Heaven.Realize that God loves you.

The Bible says in John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Understand everyone is a sinner.Romans 3:23 says, For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. No one is perfect. We have all broken Gods com-mandments. This is called sin, and it separates us from God.

Sin has a price that must be paid.Romans 6:23 tells us, For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jesus paid the price for your sin.Romans 5:8 says, But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. If we choose to accept Christ, we do not have to pay the price of death and Hell for our sins because Jesus paid for our sins when He died on the Cross. Three days later He rose again!

Finally, pray. Ask Jesus Christ to be your Saviour, and claim His promise of eternal life.In Romans 10:9, 13 the Bible says, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved... For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. This is a promise directly from God. If you will con-fess that you are a sinner and trust Him to be your Saviour, He will save you and give you the free gift of eternal life.
