Trinity & Beyond UpdateStrong support from St. John’s and many of its parishioners hasprovided a boost to the Trinity and Beyond campaign that has pushedthe fund-raising effort past its initial goal of $1 million to fund repairs atTrinity Center.

With the successful completion of a $25,000 matching grantcampaign in our parish, the fund drive total is now at $1,021,376. Animpressive 53 households and individuals from St. John’s participated inthe effort, and the church itself made a $25,000 donation and anadditional pledge of $35,000. The total impact from St. John’s is$142,654.

The conference center near Emerald Isle has already begun using thefunds for much-needed repairs and refurbishment throughout itscampus. The center has been very busy trying to complete these repairswith minimal disruption to the events they are hosting. All originalroofs have been replaced, and the decks on the two original housingclusters have been replaced. Air conditioning units have been repairedor replaced, computers upgraded, and wi-fi access has been establishedin all the public areas. Storm damage to Sanders Point and underDormitory D was repaired. Two rooms in the East Cluster wererenovated last winter to show the plan for renovations of all the rooms

THE EPISTLE 3

Our worship during Advent focuses on the themes of preparation, watching andwaiting. Many of our parents, who are welcoming new babies to their familiesthis fall, know the excitement and anticipation which accompanies the themes ofAdvent. It is in Advent that we remember the time that Mary and Josephprepared for the birth of Christ. We also remember the way that salvationhistory builds to the moment that God became flesh and dwelt among us. Newparents know all too well that the final preparation for a new birth takes place inthe midst of, not apart from, the necessary demands of our life and work. Afterall, Mary and Joseph had not planned to travel to Bethlehem to pay taxes as thedue date drew nigh.

For newcomers to the Episcopal liturgical tradition, it may seem a bit oddthat we are still watching and waiting in worship while Christmas songs fill theairwaves and homes and stores have been filled with Christmas decorationssince early November. As we observe the season of Advent we have theopportunity to learn patience to observe God’s time in the way we observe thechange of seasons. In Advent we remember the spiritual journey of the HolyFamily as they watched and waited for the birth of the Christ Child. We alsofocus on our own spiritual journey as we watch and wait for the second comingof Christ as we pray in the Lord’s Prayer – “Thy Kingdom come…”

Finally, during these in-between times, we learn to watch for those pregnantmoments when the Kingdom of Heaven beaks forth in the here and now movingus to nurture new life. The liturgical year provides us with an antidote to thecompartmentalized cultural observance of Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, Ienjoy the festive gatherings and the joyful celebrations as our culture calls us totake a break and adopt the “holiday spirit.” My point is that there is somethingdeeper, something eternal that transcends our cultural celebration of Christmas.

How often have we heard the question posed, “Why can’t we keep theholiday spirit all year round?” Then, in January, the credit card bills come dueand the demands of life and work press in and we are back to business as usual. The liturgical year teaches us that the birth of Christ is just the beginning of theearthly life of our savior which culminates in the Triduum when we visit thecross on Good Friday and celebrate the unbridled joy of the resurrection onEaster Day.As we worship through the liturgical year our lives are formed andtransformed by the one whose life opens to us the way to eternal life.

One lesson of Advent that we learn from the Holy Family is that with eachnew birth all of the relationships of the family change as we welcome a newmember of the family. Parents know this as old priorities fade and their lives arefocused on a new baby. Siblings have to make room for a new member of thefamily. All learn to make room for the new. And, in the best cases, all pulltogether to nurture a new life.

The families who welcomed new babies this fall will be coming to Churchfor baptism in the new year. We will be asked the question, “Will you whowitness these vows, support these persons in their lives in Christ?” The membersof the congregation will answer, “We will.” As we move into the future we arecalled to wrestle with two questions. “How are we, the church, supporting new

supporting new members of all ages by teaching the traditionsof our faith?” and “How are we making space in our commonlife for each new generation of children?” We know that just aseach child has his or her own unique personality so each newgeneration has an identity which differs from the pastgenerations. This spring all of our families with young childrenwill be asked to help St. John’s to cast a vision for forming ouryoungest members in their lives in Christ.

On Wednesday, December 4, I will offer the first in a seriesof forums designed to explore the liturgical tradition whichforms the foundation of worship in the Episcopal Church. Theforums will be designed to explore why we do the things we doin worship. Sessions will be scheduled throughout the liturgicalyear to provide the opportunity to explore the way each seasonforms and informs our lives in Christ. I hope that this series offorums will help us all continue the journey that begins with theeager anticipation of Advent and continues as we delve moredeeply into the mind of Christ and open our hearts to receivethe newborn Christ, and the boundless love of God.
