Great and Holy Lent, “The School of Repentance”By Father Luke Melackrinos

Father Alexander Schmemann in his book Great Lent refers to Lent as the “School of Repentance” Before beginning any personal reflection consider the following substantive

quote from this landmark writing of Father Schmemann:

We are approaching again the Great Lent, the time of repentance, the time or our reconciliation with God. Repentance is the beginning and also the condition of a truly Christian life. “Repent!” was the first word of Christ when He began to preach (Matt 4:17). But what is repentance? In the daily rush of our life we have no time to think about it, we simply take it for granted . . . Yet there must be a reason why our Church has set apart seven weeks as a special time of repentance and calls each Orthodox Christian to a special spiritual effort. This reason must obviously concern me, my life, my faith and my membership in the Church. I must try to understand it, to follow as much as I can the teachings of my Church, be Orthodox not only in name, but in life itself. What then is repentance? Great Lent gives the answer to this question. It is indeed a school of repentance to which each Christian must go every year in order to refresh the understanding of his faith.

We all know and understand that Great and Holy Lent is a time for spirituality. But a question arises, what is Lenten spirituality? Believe it or not, and this may seem strange at first blush, but Lenten spirituality is baptismal spirituality. Lent orders our spiritual lives and focuses around the Theology of baptism.

The roots of Lent are found in the early church’s baptism preparation. In the early centuries of the church, baptism of adult converts was a major event in the life of the church. In preparation for baptism, which usually coincided with the celebration of Pascha. Catechumens (those preparing for entry into the church) were put through the rigors of a spiritual and theological preparation.

St. Ambrose, a fourth century Church Father, for example, would take his Catechumens through a study of the Patriarchal texts of Genesis. With the understanding that Abraham’s departure from the land of Ur, in order

to follow God to the promised land, represents for the catechumens both their Lenten journey to baptism and their journey as baptized members of the church who are sojourners in the world and whose hope lies with their citizenship in heaven.

One of the primary spiritual disciplines during this period was fasting, along with prayer and almsgiving (or generosity). This baptismal preparation, however, became a practice for the whole Church during these weeks of Catachesis. So that it wasn’t just the Catechumens who were preparing, but the whole church joined in, so that those who were already baptized, were reaffirming their baptismal vows. From this 40-day journey of reaffirmation of baptismal vows, a Lenten experience emerged.

Through baptism, a believer is united with Christ in His death and His Resurrection. Baptism is both a putting to death of one’s self and a resurrection to a new creation of life (Rom 6). It is both a renunciation of our sinful selves and an an embrace of Jesus in faith.

Through the discipline of Lent, we journey with Jesus toward his death in eager expectation of his resurrection. As with the relationship between Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter it represents a relationship of expectation and a realization. Through the embrace of Jesus’ death in Lent, we are looking eagerly forward to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection at Pascha.

I pray you all take advantage of the beautiful worship, study and philanthropic activities during this Great and Holy Lent at the Cathedral of St. Paul. This is a beautiful and ancient way that we experience death, resurrection and the renewal of our baptsim into Christ.

In the Spirit of LentBy Father Panagiotis Zougras

“Lord, Let everything I do this day and in this season of Lent come from you, be inspired by you. I long to be closer to you. Help me to remember that nothing is important in my life unless it glorifies you in some way.”

During this Lenten season, the youth of St. Paul Cathedral have truly been living the word of God and honoring Him through their faith and good works. The GOYAns have spent three nights in a row folding clothes, packing bags of food and toiletries which will be given to the homeless people of NYC the night of April 5th. The GOYAns stopped at four areas of Manhattan to distribute the goods to the needy. This would not have been possible without the hard work and devotion of the organizers of this event: Kay Georgopalis, Maria Vorkas, Nicole Rousakis and Niko Kontoleon who have given so much of their time on this project to do the work that Christ has called each and everyone of us to do. Each and every youth organization of St. Paul Cathedral also gave back to the community, through volunteering their time and finances, to make the Apokreatiko Glendi a huge success. This success was made possible by the combined efforts of the GOYA, JOY, HOPE, Little Angels, Sunday School, Greek School and the Scouts. A very special thank you to Tina Vasilakis, Mary-Ellen Kakalos, Maria Papachristos, Erika Palmer, and Triphon Kollitides for all of the hard work they put into making this dance a success. I would also like to congratulate, with great honor, the Saint Paul Cathedral Senior Boys team who went on to win the MGOBL CHAMPIONSHIP and bring the trophy back to St. Paul’s Cathedral after 30 years! I cannot begin to thank our Coach John Caragiorgis and Assistant Coach George Pappas for all their hard work and dedication; they have made this dream a reality for this community. I would also like to congratulate our Jr. Girls team coached by Andy Karamouzis and Assistant Coach Chris Karanasos for once again making it to the MGOBL Championship Game, we are so proud of all of you. Our JOY teams are now in the playoffs and they are also looking very good. Finally our community once again hosted the Cathedral Cup in which both of our volleyball team’s, girls and boys, made it to the round before the championship game. We also participated in many fun-filled events over the past few weeks. The JOY children attended the 2nd annual NY Islander Greek heritage night and the children had the opportunity to watch the Islanders defeat Tampa Bay. The GOYAns went on a Scavenger Hunt throughout NYC where they were able to hang out with other GOYAns from the entire DAD district. In closing, I would like to congratulate the children of our Greek School program who did a wonderful job on their

March 25th performance. They were truly an inspiration and everyone enjoyed the program greatly. I would also like to congratulate the winners of the St. Paul Cathedral Oratorical Festival. The winner of the Junior Division was Angela Philippides and the Senior Division was a tie between Andrew Monioudis and Andrew Bandini. They all spoke very well and continue to make this parish proud.

By Deacon Mathew Kakis

IF CHRIST IS NOT RISEN, YOUR FAITH IS IN VAIN; I Corinthians 15:17 Do we not sing, “Christ is Risen

from the dead, trampling down death by death and bestowing life to those in the tombs? As St. Paul tells us in Romans, 6:5 “For if we have been united in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be united in the likeness of His Resurrection.” We are reminded that he resurrected Lazarus and several others to show His glorious Power but we must recall that they all died later and are still awaiting eventual eternal life. In the very same way, each of us must look forward to the same occurrence. We believe that those who have fallen asleep will be resurrected to eternal life and be reunited with those, who are alive, to join them in His Glorious Kingdom forever. Many will ask, : “How will we look or be? Just gaze at our beautiful Orthodox icons. We will appearas our Lord, Our Theotokos, our Saints and Martyrs. Still others ask, “When will it occur?” Please don’t trouble yourself about such details. This has been decided by our Heavenly Father. It is His business. Only He knows. Perhaps in the middle of the night, perhaps when we least expect it. All we can and must do is be ready. Be certain, it will happen and the time is fast approaching. So what’s left for us to do? Be prepared and come to His Mystical Supper as often as you can. Let us attempt “a Christian end to our lives in peace and repentance”, just as He asks of us. He is constantly inviting us with open arms, on His Cross, ready for us to be ready to celebrate His Resurrection for “Indeed He is Risen” May each of you in our beloved St. Paul Family and beyond celebrate the greatest news ever!

From the Parish Council PresidentBy William J. Lembo

It is hard to believe that winter is finally over and Easter is upon us! Our community continues to provide us with so many spiritual and social opportunities. Thank you, Father Luke

and Father Peter, for maintaining an active schedule of services and a weekly lecture series to assist us in preparing for this holiest time of year. Our organizations continue to participate in many events that fill our social calendar. The Apokreatiko Glendi was a huge success thanks to Chairladies Tina Vasilakis, Maria Papachristos and Mary Ellen Kakalos. The Father Nicholas J. Magoulias Cathedral Center was packed with parishioners of all ages enjoying good food, lively music and even a magician! Just weeks later, young people from many of the communities on Long Island re-filled our Cathedral Center to enjoy a combination of friendly competition and spiritual reflection provided during our annual volley ball tournament, the Cathedral Cup. Our GOYA and JOY basketball teams gave us many exciting moments, but none more exhilarating than our Senior Boys basketball team winning the championship for the first time in nearly thirty years. Congratulations to Coach John Carageorgis and assistant Coach George Pappas for an excellent season. Thank you also to Coach Andrew Karamouzis and the Junior Girls basketball team for their exciting run to the championship of their division which fell just short in a tough loss in the finals. Our thanks cannot be limited to our most successful teams. Our entire program owes its success to our HOPE, JOY and GOYA advisors and all those who devote their time to our children. While our basketball teams were showing their athletic prowess, several of our young people displayed their intelligence and poise at our Oratorical Festival. Congratulations to Angela Phillipides who finished third in the Junior Division and to Andrew Monioudis who received honorable mention. We were blessed again this year to celebrate the anniversary of the Tearing Icon. The service and the reception that follows, continues to attract people of many faiths. Thank you to Pagona Catsounis and the ladies of our Philoptochos Society. The Greek School’ s March 25 presentation in our Cathedral Center set the stage for our participation in the Greek Independence Day Parade. With great pride, we marched down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on April 7, behind our beautifully decorated float. Three busloads of marchers, representing St. Anna’s Philoptochos, our Greek School, our Parish Council and many of our organizations, participated. Most returned to our Cathedral Center to enjoy a Lenten meal after the parade. Thank you to Liz Comack and her committee for such an uplifting day!As we ready to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord,

Memory EternalFather Nicholas J. MagouliasWe would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Decorations Committee, the Recognition Committee and the Parish Council for honoring the memory of Father Nicholas J. Magoulias. We especially would like to thank Father Luke and Michael Gurlides for their efforts in seeing that his memory was properly honored after his many years of service to the parish. Your kindnesses were truly appreciated. It is also with deepest appreciation that we thank our family, the many parishioners and friends throughout the country for generously and unselfishly remembering Father Nick with their memorial donations at the time of his passing. The donations collected in his memory have been used for various items in the newly named administration building: “The Reverend Nicholas J. Magoulias Ministry and Fellowship Center,” with the installation of a large plaque and a small plaque at the exterior entrance to the building, the mosaic likeness in the cabinet and the plaque at the entrance to “The Father Nicholas J. Magoulias Cathedral Center”.Recently installed in the Cathedral was the electrified carillon system where his memory will indeed be eternal when it is played at various services. We are forever grateful to all for the love and respect always shown him. May his memory be eternal! With love and heartfelt appreciation,Presvytera Marilyn, Jonathan and Carolyn

we must also turn our energies to two of our biggest fundraisers, the Gala Sweepstakes and our Greek festival. Sweepstakes Co-chairmen Jim Ginis and Harry Demiris have assembled an exceptional prize list that includes two cars, two exotic vacation trips and nearly fifty other prizes. The drawing will take place on the final evening of our annual Festival. Please purchase at least one ticket and sell another. Contact the Cathedral office or any parish council member for details. Our festival this year is being chaired by Tony Vaccari and George Zakos. They have spent many evenings during the last four months preparing for the Festival which runs from May 30 to June 2. The success of this event is dependent on your donations of time and talent. Please sign up to work alongside your fellow parishioners. Don’t forget to also bring in those treasures hidden in your attic or basement that we can sell in our Flea Market. Our ability to balance our budget and continue to improve our facilities has become more and more dependent on these two fundraisers. Please continue to support them.I look forward to seeing all of you over the next few months, either in Church or at the Festival.Kali Anastasi

Cemetery Plots:Harry Raptakis stated that there was a request to install benches by the Pinelawn plots in the second section. This would be an expense to the cathedral and will take up plot space. The committee recommends that no action be taken. The cathedral still has about 50% of the plots remaining and the committee does not think there is a need to purchase more plots. Also there are no sprinklers for the second section at this time and the cemetery is watering through a truck system. Regarding the Return Policy for the plots, the committee thinks it is to the cathedral’s benefit to buy the plots back at the price paid originally and resell now at a higher price. Regarding the New Jersey plots, the committee believes that the cathedral will never use these plots. Harry has drafted a letter to send out to all the nonprofits in the area that may be interested in purchasing the plots. He is waiting for a response from the NJ Cemetery Association to make sure there is no recourse on the nonuse of these plots before he sends out the letters.

Human Resources:Harry Raptakis made a motion to reimburse Father Peter $3,000 for the difference in the housing allowance for his compensation package from last year. A value of $27,000 per year had been used for the use of the property at 2 Kensington in Father Peter’s compensation package rather than the fair market value previously used of $24,000 when Father Luke resided there. The motion was

seconded by Jim Georgakis. Motion carried.

Harry Raptakis stated that he has filled all the necessary tax exempt forms for all the church’s real estate with the county.

Library/Archive Project:George Marinos reported that a donor has volunteered to pay for shelving in the parish council office. An update will be given when there is more information. The president stated that the executive committee recommended that there must be a proposal for the shelving layout, hours and physical use of the room.

Christmas Cards:Steve Makrinos reported total revenue of $5,595 and expenses of $920 leaving a profit of $4,675. The church office will invoice all those who have still not paid.

New Business:John Hajisava asked if the two flags damaged by Hurricane Sandy will be replaced. It was stated that George K. Lavas has ordered new flags. Fran Lutfy will submit the invoice for the flags as a separate item to the insurance company.

A motion to adjourn at 10:12 pm was made by Michael Gurlides, seconded by Dino Zografos. Motion carried.

Our Stewardship is InadequateBy The Stewardship Committtee

“Here we go again! The Church is asking us for money.” How often do we hear that? How many of us are guilty ourselves of this rather familiar refrain? Do we realize, though, that the Church is not a country club nor is she a profit making enterprise? The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ, an extension of our very being, our anchor. A truly believing Greek Orthodox Christian loves the Church as his own. He supports the parish according to her needs, not his personal convenience. A devoted sibling, parent or adult child would never tell his loved one. “I’ve given you enough. You’re on your own.” Similarly, a faithful Greek Orthodox would never short change his church. The point is that our parish’s current income is really not enough since expenses and obligations continue to increase. Yes, we do have a few benevolent donors. However, many of us contribute much less than our capacity. We contribute simply what’s comfortable for us, without truly being loving and generous. This type of frugal giving is not genuine stewardship. Genuine stewardship is a tangible expression of our faith. We believe in a loving God who gives of Himself for our salvation. Consequently, Orthodox Stewardship is a loving response where we offer ourselves to Him in return. Giving is a spiritual discipline and we should give out of need to grow spiritually. In fact, generous giving to the Church is a sacramental expression of belief in Christ. But, just how much should we actually give? What guidelines should we follow? Well, here is some serious food for thought. Research indicates that Roman Catholics and Lutherans generally give 2% of their gross family incomes to their respective churches. By comparison, most Greek Orthodox families give only one- half percent of their yearly income. This is unfortunate and ironic when we consider that Greek Orthodox Christians, as a group, are among the most successful financially in America compared to other denominations. We are, in other words, the least generous in supporting our Church! What a contradiction! Therefore, we are suggesting that every Greek Orthodox family contribute at least 1% of its gross income to Stewardship. For example; gross income of $50,000 = $500 ($10 per week) $75,000 = $750 ($15 per week) $100,000 = $1,000 ($20 per week $150,000 = $1,500 ($30 per week) $200,000 = $2,000 ($40 per week)Do Catholics and Lutherans love their churches more than we do ours? Are they better Christians than we are? Let us more strongly affirm our faith and increase our pledges!

St. John Chrysostom Oratorical FestivalBy Carol Kerler

The annual parish level St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival was held on March 10 at St. Paul’s Cathedral. This nationwide festival provides students an opportunity to learn about and communicate their Orthodox faith by presenting original speeches before a panel of three judges. Six students chose a topic from a list prepared by the Archdiocese. Their speeches required research and personal interpretation.

Gregory Andreopoulos explained the meaning of Jesus’s teaching in John 15:5: “I am the vine, you are the branches.” He provided examples of how the blessed sacraments of the Church are seen as branches extending from Christ, the vine. Andrew Bandini discussed the persecution of early Christians and the impact of the Edict of Milan in 313 AD. He stated that our faith must be central in our lives and our religious freedom cannot be taken for granted.

Peter Charalambous illustrated how Christians are connected to the Church just as grapes and branches are connected to a vine, representing Christ. He compared the growth of a vineyard with the spread of the Christian faith and good works. Andrew Monioudis analyzed the Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian and explained how we may strive towards the virtues of humility and patience in today’s culture. He pointed out the relevance of this prayer, written 1,600 years ago, to help us to grow closer to God.

Angela Philippides discussed how the vine is a symbol of our union with God, noting that a branch cannot produce fruit without an attachment to the vine. She emphasized the importance of the Church family in keeping us rooted or connected to God. Stephanie Zaferiou cited Scripture to point out that the virtues taught by Saint Paul were written into the Edict of Milan. She observed that religious persecution continues to this day and quoted a statement from Patriarch Bartholomew advocating religious tolerance.

In the Junior Division, Angela Philippides won first place, Peter Charalambous was awarded second place, and Gregory Andreopoulos was awarded third place. In the Senior Division, both Andrew Bandini and Andrew Monioudis won first place with a tied judgment.

Stephanie Zaferiou was awarded third place. Chairperson Carol Kerler commended the students for their insight and scholarship and thanked Mr. and Mrs. Gurlides for sponsoring a $50 prize for each first place speaker.

Many thanks to Father Luke and Father Peter, judges Athena Canaris, George Guerrieri and George Hadjoglou, timekeeper George Lavas, church school director Andrea Potaris, Bill Potaris, Georgia Morgan, Anton Skrivanek and all of the church school teachers and families of the students for their support. Andrew Bandini, Andrew Monioudis and Angela Philippides advanced and spoke at the district level Oratorical Festival on March 29 at St. Demetrios Church in Jamaica.

School of Religious EducationBy Joan Prieston

The students have been busy researching and writing their essay for the Parish Oratorical Festival which was held in the Hellenic Room on Sunday, March 10. In the Junior Division, Angela Philippides won first place, Peter Charalambous was awarded second place and Gregory Andreopoulos was awarded third place. In the Senior Division, both Andrew Bandini and Andrew Monioudis won first place with a tied judgment. Stephanie Zaferiou was awarded third place. Chairperson for this annual event was Carol Kerler who has held this position for many years. Her positive attitude has influenced and encouraged our students to participate in this important aspect of their religious education.

During this Lenten period, the teachers educate our students about the meaning of the many important events leading to the Resurrection of our Lord. Many participated in the special days during this 40 day period, particularly the Sunday of Orthodoxy.

The Sunday School would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Michael and Dee Gurlides for their generous donation of the savings bonds which were awarded to the winners of our Parish Oratorical Festival. This gesture has been extended to this event for many years in memory of their beloved son, Michael. May God bless them always.

Daughters of Penelope Pasithea Chapter #141By Pauline Alexander

Greetings everyone. Hope you will all have a wonderful Easter.

Please be advised of the following dates for our chapter events: May 8 Ahepa Easter Glendi with Daughters of Penelope, Pasithea Chapter

June 12 Honey Party, 7:30 p.m.

On March 13th, Pasithea hosted their annual dinner and district visitation in the Hellenic Room. Our guests were Julia Collins, District Governor and Georgia Foundatos, District Treasurer. Although it was our “pot luck” dinner, it was anything but. Our members donated the entrees and they were wonderful. Our chairpersons were Joanne Pappas and Marion Panos who worked tirelessly. Our board members were also key to the success of this event.

In addition, we held an initiation wherein 12 new members were inducted. Our chapter officers and officials were able to wear the lovely jewels of the chapter during the ceremony. These are the insignia of the chapter mounted on a velvet necklace worn around the neck. It was a very moving ceremony. The initiates repeat certain prayers and receive a lighted candle. We could see that these lovely young women were moved as well. We were also graced with Presvytera Marusia’s company. Much credit for this initiation is deserved to Fran Lutfy, our vice president and membership chairman.

JOY – (JUNIOR ORTHODOX YOUTH)By Andrea Pagonis

We have had an exciting year and would like to thank everyone who has helped us in so many different ways these past several months. Since the beginning, we have had an ice cream party, costume party, Christmas party, movie night, chocolate night, cookie night and many other fun and exciting activities.

Registration for the Olympics were held on March 9th. This is such a wonderful opportunity for our kids to gather at Suffolk Community College on Memorial Day weekend where we will be competing against other Greek Orthodox churches. If interested in participating, please contact one of the JOY advisors.

St. Anna’s Philoptochos By Soteroulla Constantinou

Translated, Philoptochos means friend of the poor. Yes, that is the definition of Philoptochos, but essentially it means LOVE, Love for philanthropy and Love for humanity. For the last 80 years, the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society has exemplified this LOVE by ministering to those who are in need of love, comfort and care. Through fund raising efforts, we have aided many charitable organizations as well as victims of natural disasters and other philanthropic programs.

On March 10, 2013, the Agape Luncheon was hosted by the Direct Archdiocesan District. Kathy Boulukos assembled a photo slide show of over 500 pictures called “A celebration of Philoptochos Women” featuring many pictures from our own St. Anna’s Archives and including old photos from the start of our chapter. The event yielded $141,000, part of which will be disbursed to the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund and to the new Philoptochos house, “Center for Philanthropy”.

With over 600 people in attendance, our 50 years and over Philoptochos members were honored. These women embody what it means to be a true Philoptochos member. They faithfully fulfilled their philanthropic mission by being active members and supporters of the St. Anna’s Philoptochos Chapter. Without their love for humanity, it would be difficult to have as much success carrying out the mission entrusted to us. We are very happy to report that St. Anna’s had 16 of our members who were honored for all their love and support for the last 50 years.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Mr. & Mrs. ClubBy Ann Stephens

Despite the wicked weather we all endured this winter. The Mr. & Mrs. Club hosted a spectacular Valentine’s Day Dinner. Close to one hundred people attended, making this our most successful winter event in recent years! It was wonderful to see that many new faces who braved the chilly temperatures to join their friends and fellow parishioners.

President April Mavrovitis and the executive board decorated the Hellenic room beautifully. Romantic music and warm laughter filled the air. There was an abundance of delicious food catered by Jamie Spanopoulos and which filled everyone’s appetite! Photos of the evening are posted on the Church website at http://stpaulhempstead.org.

The final event of the season is our Cinco de Mayo evening on Tuesday, May 7th. This is an exciting celebration featuring Mexican inspired music, food and drink. For those of you who have attended in the past, you know this is an evening not to be missed. For those of you who have never attended, mark your calendar, you won’t be sorry! Details will follow in the Sunday bulletin and on the website. Hope to see you there!

Solon SocietyBy C. Dionysios Dinou

The Solon Society opened it’s Spring 2013 season with a fantastic lecture given by Prof. Nikos Salingaros from the University of Austin Texas. Our thanks to the Center for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies for sharing Prof. Salingaros’ great knowledge with us. His lecture on Hellenic influence in modern architecture was truly eye opening and outstanding. March 27th, the Solon Society, in conjunction with AHEPA Chapter#170, gave a lecture on the importance of the 1821 Revolution in modern times. There was a light lenten buffet. The lecture was given by our society’s president.

In April our meeting was given by Prof. Robert Garland. The title of his lecture was: “Everything You’ve Ever Wanted To Know About Daily Life in Ancient Greece.” Prof. Garland is a classicist from the United Kingdom, is an authority on classical Greece and an outstanding lecturer. Our meetings, unless otherwise indicated, are on the second Thursday of each month in the Hellenic Room. We begin at 7:30 PM with coffee, tea and a light dessert buffet with lectures beginning at 8:00 PM. We look forward to seeing our members and friends throughout our spring season.

WE CARE Cancer Support GroupBy Joanne Vagelatos

I recently watched a live webcast with Memorial Sloan-Kettering experts discussing the latest research, diagnosis and treatment information for breast cancer. In addition, the doctors on the panel discussed eating smart which is a topic discussed often in our support group. By including lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet, getting plenty of exercise and maintaining proper weight, one can help prevent the occurrence and/or reoccurrence of cancer.

The doctors mentioned that there is no magic diet that will help prevent the occurrence of cancer. One should concentrate on including lots of fruits and vegetables in one’s diet and minimize the intake of animal fats. Except for Vitamin D, we should try to avoid taking supplements and instead focus on eating colorful vegetables and fruits to obtain the necessary nutrients our body needs to function properly. Don’t forget that sugar is a cancer feeder. Everything we eat turns to sugar in the body. Avoid eating sugary products.

The WE CARE Cancer Support Group focuses on nutrition and spiritual support to help deal with the effects of cancer. The group consists of not only sufferers and survivors, but of supporters and those interested in the topics presented.

Hoping to see you at our meetings.

Grief & Bereavement By Anna Dounelis

Grief, Easter, and the ResurrectionMother had cancer. When she went to the hospital the last time, someone sent her an Easter lily to brighten her room. Since her immune system was so damaged, the doctor asked me to remove the plant. Mother was saddened because the plant was in full bloom, but she understood. I told her I would take good care of it and she would see it when she went home again. I truly believed she would come home again.

But she didn’t. My world turned upside down and days turned into months before I knew it. The lily lost its blooms and withered to nothing but dried sticks in a terra cotta pot. After moving the pot a hundred times, I finally put it on the back porch and forgot about it, figuring it was already dead anyway.

Time went by and I completely forgot all about that lily, but when the next spring came I saw it growing again. I was surprised at first, then thrilled. Then, I became angry. Mother died and couldn’t come back, so why can that lily? It wasn’t fair. That first season it bloomed beautifully with no help from me.

It’s been seven years now, and it’s almost Easter again. It’s a time to remember a woman who loved me very much and who I love with all my heart. I miss her every day, still after all these years. As I stare out the kitchen window at the planter outside, I am surprised to see those beautiful lilies growing so beautifully and tall! There is a whole planter full of them now, as the bulbs have split and reproduced.

I’m so grateful for this flower as it rises in all its glory by blooming every year on the anniversary of her death. During a time when I would be so saddened, it is a beautiful reminder that there is a resurrection, that there is life after death.

I know in my heart that she has gone to live with the Lord and in that knowledge comes peace to my heart. I know one day I will see her again. When that day comes, all the mysteries of life and death will be made known, all tears will be wiped away, grief will be no more and joy will abound.

Easter is the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. I’ve known that all my life. But only now can I fully understand what resurrection truly means…to die, and to rise again to LIVE. As Jesus Christ died and rose again, so does this lily, so did my Mother.
