POWERFUL PRAYER

As you might suspect, I’ve still spent a lot of overtime praying since Karen is not yet herself. She’s better, but

far from totally. So, I pray. As God has made it very clear to me, the power of prayer should not be

underestimated. He proved that very pointedly. James 5:16-18 declares, "…The prayer of a righteous man is

powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not

rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced

its crops." God most definitely listens to prayers, answers prayers, and moves in response to prayers.

Jesus taught, "…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain,

'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you" (Matthew 17:20).

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 tells us, "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary,

they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself

up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." The Bible

urges us, "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be

alert and always keep on praying for all the saints" (Ephesians 6:18).

It is also important for us to realize that the power of prayer is not the result of the person praying. Rather, the

power resides in the God who is being prayed to. 1 John 5:14-15 tells us, "This is the confidence we have in

approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears

us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of Him." No matter the person praying,

the passion behind the prayer, or the purpose of the prayer - God answers prayers that are in agreement with

His will. His answers are not always yes, but are always in our best interest. When our desires line up with His

will, we will come to understand that in time. When we pray passionately and purposefully, according to

God's will, God responds powerfully!

There is no "magic formula" for powerful prayer. Our prayers being answered is not based on the eloquence of

our prayers. We don't have to use certain words or phrases to get God to answer our prayers. In fact, Jesus

rebukes those who pray using repetitions, "And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they

think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you

need before you ask him" (Matthew 6:7-8). Prayer is communicating with God. All you have to do is ask

God for His help. Psalm 107:28-30 reminds us, "Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought

them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad

when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven." There is power in prayer!

The Word of God is full of accounts describing the power of prayer in various situations. The power of prayer has

overcome enemies (Psalm 6:9-10), conquered death (2 Kings 4:3-36), brought healing (James 5:14-15), and

defeated demons (Mark 9:29). God, through prayer, opens eyes, changes hearts, heals wounds, and grants wisdom

(James 1:5). The power of prayer should never be underestimated because it draws on the glory and might of the

infinitely powerful God of the universe!

Yours in Christ,

Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ’s 15th Annual Gathering is all about celebrating the very

thing that makes us who we are: our DNA. This fall, join LCMC pastors, leaders and church members from all over the world for four fun-filled days of worship, inspiration, learning, fellowship and opportunities for

networking.

Whether you’re new to LCMC, just checking us out for the first time, or a long-time member looking to

make new friends and reunite with old ones, our 15th Annual Gathering is the place to be! The event takes

place October 4-7, 2015 at:

Embassy Suites Dallas - Frisco Hotel, Convention Center & Spa 7600 John Q. Hammons Drive

Frisco, TX 75034

Phone: 1 (972) 712-7200

You will soon notice, if you have not already, that our facilities are looking a lot cleaner. This is because St. Paul has hired City Wide to provide cleaning services in both our buildings. They will be working during the night so they are not disrupting the many activities that occur on a daily basis. Please contact any council member is you see an area that is not receiving the appropriate attention.

Introducing ... uhhh ... ummm ... well ... me, I guess.

Well this is awkward! (Just go for it already!) Ahem... My name is Bryce Formwalt and I have recently begun a new position with LCMC Texas District as the first Director of Mission Growth. (Now that wasn't so bad now was it?! But what's a Director of Mission Growth?) Well, you might be wondering what a Director Mission Growth is, and if so, you're not alone! We are all trying to learn about this as we go. (Way to instill confidence, buddy! Got anything better than that?)

As I understand it, the position is best summed up in the image of a "mission coach" for the Texas District, meaning that I am here to support, encourage, and lead mission efforts among our Texas District congregations. Specifically, I will be working with those congregations who are seeking revitalization and renewal. I am available as a resource to help coach pastors and leaders through this challenging process. I will also be working with the Mission Team and church planters to establish new congregations across Texas. And I will also be an ambassador for the mission efforts of the entire Texas District as I seek to raise support for and participation in this shared ministry. (There, now that's more like it!)

So I look forward to meeting you and working with you, hearing the stories of God's work in and through your congregation and sharing with you the joy of other stories so that you may be encouraged in your work, too. It is my goal to visit and preach in every one of our congregations in the Texas District over the next two years, so please give me a call and schedule a time to have me come and visit. (Now you're sounding desperate!)

In all seriousness, the District Council and Mission Team believe that our mission work is important enough to invest my full-time efforts in, so I am here and available to help serve the mission of Christ however I can. Feel free to contact me and I look forward to working with you. My email is [email protected] and my phone number is 512-942-7776. And you can follow along with happenings across the District by liking us at facebook.com/lcmctexas.

(You idiot... you didn't tell them anything about who you are! What were you thinking?) Oh and I should probably share with you that I was born and raised in Waverly, Iowa, am a graduate of Wartburg College and Gettysburg Seminary, have been an ordained pastor for 13 years, married to wife Lisa for over 17 years, and father of sons Cole and Simeon, ages 12 and 11. After serving churches in Ohio, Illinois, and North Dakota, we now are living in Georgetown and are getting used to the Texas heat (not really - don't lie)... ok maybe not the heat! But we are happy to serve the Lord among you here in Texas. God bless!

September 2015

LCMC Texas District Convention

The convention was held at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Victoria, Texas July 31 and August 1, 2015. Our congregation was represented by

Meredith and Ben Ehler, Andy Cave, Carol and I.

The convention began on Friday evening with dinner, worship, business session and keynote address by Pastor Enrique Estrada, Spirit of Joy

Lutheran Church, Monterrey, Mexico. The theme was Deep in the Heart. Pastor Enrique emphasized we must have Jesus deep in our hearts

and lives, communicate the Gospel of Hope and Joy to our communities, and believe in the power of the Holy Spirit.

The business session was brief dealing with financials and election of new council members to replace those that completed their terms.

On Saturday the convention was opened with hymns and prayer. Pastor Paul Owens, St Paul Lutheran Church New Braunfels and member

of the LCMC Ministry Board, gave a brief presentation on the Ministry Board. He stressed that the congregation is the frontline of ministry.

He asked congregations to consider using interns since we have a number of folks studying for the ministry in seminaries and Beyond the

River Academy. John Biefelt, a member of the District Council, gave a report on Camp Eagle (Our youth attended this year) and the need to

prepare for the 1st LCMC National Youth Gathering, 7/19-22/16, at Grandview University, Des Moines, Iowa.

Pastor Bryce Formwalt, Director of Mission Growth was installed. Members of the mission team and pastors who participated in his

installation and others from the congregation laid hands on him in prayer.

Pastor Formwalt gave an inspiring keynote address on the theme, “We’re on a Mission From God”, based on Matthew 28:19-20. He utilized

3 video scenes from the Blues Brothers, Pearl Harbor 2000 and the Karate Kid. The address is available on the Texas District website

(www.lcmctexas.org) and is well worth viewing it on a computer (It is not viewable on a tablet).

Worship and Communion was led by Pastor John Waak. His sermon was based on Romans 10:1-13. He cited an interesting quote attributed

to John Wesley that "God sets me on fire and people come to watch me burn." The future of the church is the Lord. Theology and doctrine

are for the head, faith is in the heart and the heart is superior to the brain. If a person is struggling with their faith, we shouldn’t talk to them

on doctrine or theology, but talk with them of Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

The convention was closed with a hymn and Benediction by Pastor Waak.

Andy, Meredith, Ben, Carol and I attended the following breakout sessions "Deep in the Heart of Families" by Pastor Bobby Leggett, "Don't

Settle for Just Giving Money: Build a Mission Sending Culture in Your Congregation" by Pastor Bill Moberly, “ "Mexico Mission International"

by Pastor Enrique Estrada, “Technology in the Church” by Ryan Grube, and "Coordinating District-Wide Youth Events" by Pastor Sarah

Shanks

The offering of $ 1,112 was split between Mexico International and the LCMC Texas Mission team

I find that attending the conventions and also the National Gatherings are very inspirational and uplifting. We want to get more of our SPLC

disciples involved with LCMC Texas District ministries. Please contact those of us who attended the convention if you have any questions or

how you can be involved in district activities

Jack Davis, Member LCMC Texas Mission Team.

The BBB was going to resume meeting on Saturday, September 19th, but that is the day of the Bulverde Jubi-

lee. Since we have a fair amount of involvement on the part of the congregation (Pastor Lee is driving one of

the carts for a taxi service), we’ll postpone having our first session until October.

Hope to see you then!

Young Adult Ministry

The St. Paul Young Adult Ministry is open to all who are 18-30ish years old. We meet

for fellowship, mission and Bible Study. In September, we will meet on 9/14 & 9/28

for dinner and Bible Study from 6:30pm-8pm at the Ehler’s House.

Hopefully our Thursday Bible Study classes will meet at their regular times this month as we continue our

exploration of the book of Acts. Remember, each class has plenty to offer on its own. If you haven’t attended

a study before don’t feel you can’t try one out now. A lot of your friends can’t come every week either, but

show up when they can. You can do the same. Join us at either 8:00 am, 10:00 am and 6:30 pm.

Bible study is painless and a great way to get to know God a little better.

.

The Adult Christian Education (ACE) Schedule for September 2015

Class led by Jeff Smith meets in the ACE (Portable) building Three weeks ago, we began a study on the Holy Spirit. It is set to be a 13 week study. We are looking at the power and at-tributes of the Holy Spirit. We are using numerous Old and New Testament scriptures as we work through this study. Our goal is to understand what a Christian receives through the indwelling of the Spirit. Class led by Dean & Kathy Krueger meets in the Luther Room Dean and Kathy Krueger's A.C.E. class in September and October will present "Miracles of the Old Testament, Part 1." Each week will present different miracles which may include Creation, Babies to Barren Mothers, The Burning Bush, Balaam's Talking Donkey, Jonah and the Fish, The Flood, Destruction of Evil Cities, The Ten Plagues, Elijah vs, Baal's Prophets, The Day the Sun Stopped, Quail and Manna, Walking through Rivers, Blinding the Syrian Army, The Snake on the Pole, The Fiery Furnace or Daniel and the Lions. Class disciples may request other or additional miracles to study. Class led by Mike Scott meets in the choir room This five-session small group Bible study, God Heard Their Cry, by noted teacher and historian, Ray Vander Laan, is volume eight of the 12-part Faith Lessons filmed-on-location DVD and Discovery Guide series. Vander Laan illustrates how, in ancient times, nothing was bigger than Egypt…powerful pharaohs, strong armies, and a multitude of gods. God’s people were no match against the Egyptians. In this volume of Faith Lessons, discover how God answers the cry of his persecuted people and proclaims himself Lord to them and their oppressors. Filmed on location in Israel, Faith Lessons is a unique video series that brings God's Word to life with astounding relevance. By weaving together the Bible's fascinating historical, cultural, religious, and geographical contexts, teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan reveals unique insights into the Scriptures' significance for modern believers. Class led by Ingrid Lingle meets in the office area workroom The topic will be: "The Church in Babylon" When we reject God, we invite judgment. This was true of the Israelites, and is also true of our nation today. The book of Jeremiah should motivate us to be faithful in a pagan culture that is under the judgment of God. Tuesday Women’s class which meets in the choir room at 9;00 AM is led by Connie Osborn Please come join us as we begin LIFE & MINISTRY OF THE MESSIAH by Ray Vander Laan. There are 8 lessons with video and the study will be 16 weeks long. Discover Jesus...journey back to the time of Jesus. Marvel at the magnificence of Herod's palace. Scramble among the ruins of Qumran. And wonder at the simplicity and wisdom of Jesus' parables. Discover how the events of Jesus' day impacted his life, ministry and communication. Then let them impact yours . .

Guatemala Mission Update

The Guatemalan mission team of 2015 would like to thank our congregation for your support by serving you an authentic Guatemalan breakfast between the two services on September 13, 2015.

Please join us in welcoming Julie Sutton who will be speaking. She and her family has made it possible for St. Paul to participate in Global missions. You don't want to miss her testimony.

Also we would like to show our appreciation and fill a suitcase or two for her to take back to the Casa Hogar with a complete set of clothes and a pair of shoes for each of the children housed there. We will have cards with each of their information. Please consider sponsoring a child by picking up a card and purchasing for the individual on the card. Look for details to come in the bulletin.

Many Blessings♡ the Mission Team

Don’t forget that the second Sunday of every month you are asked to bring a non-perishable food item or

money as a much needed gift and contribution to Provisions, our local food shelf. Every single can or box is

greatly needed and appreciated. Thanks for caring!

Please get mission minded so that every third Sunday of the month you set aside a gift for our designated

monthly mission emphasis. This goes above and beyond our regular giving because the need is great.

Sometimes our monthly emphasis will be local, sometimes beyond. Whatever the case, there is a genuine

need we can help support.

Prayer Warriors

We love to know your praises and continued concerns. The prayer warriors are in continuous prayer for all! Please contact Lucy Walker, Stella Ross or the church office for your prayer requests:

Let Go Let God

A perfect example of this...

Two strangers meet, they don't care to truly get to know the other and are close minded. At that moment in time they are both just fine with their mutual understanding without even truly being conscious of it. When God meets them right where they are things begin to change. The question is why do these strangers fight what God has put into place? Let's say that fear is the root. Fear comes in different forms consciously and unconsciously. Conscious can be divided into superficial and hidden fears. Just as unconscious fear can be defined as being unfamiliar and difficult to understand. Superficially speaking; fear can be escaped by reading, seeking God, or just the act of physically doing something. Whereas unconscious fear becomes more difficult because it's hidden. That's when God comes into play.

He comes to you in different forms such as in dreams, thoughts that are random and when you least expect it. Or maybe he will come to you through a stranger that has the potential to be a new friend. This friendship is completely unexpected and possibly unwanted. The fear of being hurt, disappointed, or even the fear that prevents affection to occur. Maybe you are afraid of what tomorrow will bring. "Be free of fear and let God."

If we let God do his work then, and only then can we let go of fear which holds us back and open our hearts and minds to what he has bonded together for the glory of Christ our Father.

Psalms 112: 7 He will have no fear of bad news; His heart is steadfast; Trust in the Lord.

Will you let go and let God??

Dear St Paul Family –

In August the youth of St Paul held their annual garage sale which was a great success. Again, your donations

astounded us. We thank you for your donations and your continued support of our programs and missions.

We also thank the many parents and others which support our youth missions and programs. Throughout the

summer, parents and others offered their time and their treasures – well really their trucks and trailers – to

ensure a successful garage sale. We especially want to thank Lorie Winkler and Kelly Schumacher for their time

and effort in leading the garage sale team. We love you all and thank you for your prayers, guidance, and

tireless support of the St Paul youth.

God bless you all,

The Youth of St Paul

Thank you for supporting the MS Bake Sale. St. Paul's

youth raised $638.34 which directly benefits research

and programs through the National Multiple Sclerosis

Society. A big THANKS to Abby Winkler & Thomas

VonBuettner for leading this effort!

welcome at our Meet the Teacher event on Thursday morning September 3rd. Please include us in your prayers. We are an

outreach ministry of this church and want to show the children the love of God and learning in one location. We couldn’t do

this without your support, thank you.

With that being said, it’s not too late to register your kiddos for preschool this fall. 2015 registration is still going on. We have 2

While the World Watched by Carolyn

Maul McKinsty is a gripping story of a

turbulent time in American history during

the Civil Rights era. Carolyn was an eye

witness to the explosion set off by the

KKK in the Sixteenth Street Baptist

Church in Birmingham, AL over a half century ago killing four

young friends of Carolyn’s. While the World Watched is an

incredible testament to how far we’ve come – and how far we

have to go.

Come join us in the Fellowship Hall on Sept. 14th at 6pm to join in

a lively discussion of this book. Bring a snack and join in the

fellowship and fun. You may contact Lucy Walker for more

information at 830-885-3939.

On Tuesday, September 15th, the men of St. Paul gather at the

Knibbe Ranch Hall at 6:30 pm for an evening of fellowship. Join

us for good food and good fellowship with a little food for thought

thrown in for good measure.

Join us by setting aside that date on your calendar. Better yet,

bring a friend or neighbor along with you. The more the merrier.

Also, please consider volunteering in our booth at the Bulverde

Jubilee Saturday, September 19th from 10:00am to 5:00pm. We

will need help selling sausage wraps and water. Please contact the

church office for more information.

Ladies Bunco Life Group is looking for one regular member and additional substitutes. We meet on a

monthly basis for lunch, a devotional, fellowship, and to play Bunco. There is a charge of $5.00 to play, however we use the money to sponsor our World Vision child and support various charities. Meeting time is at 12:00PM on

the first Wednesday of each month, in the church fellowship hall or in hostess's home. If interested in

joining please contact Judi Sims 830-980-8507 or [email protected]

Bulverde Jubilee — Volunteers Needed

Bulverde Jubilee takes place on Saturday,

September 19, 2015 from 10:00am until 5:00pm. The

St. Paul Evangelism Team is seeking volunteers to

staff the Evangelism table during Jubilee. Help us

introduce the Red Roof Church and spread the good

news of Jesus Christ to our neighbors by volunteering

for a 2 hour shift in the Evangelism booth. For more

information or to sign up, contact Shawn Sande

at 631-219-3062.

Good News. Great Joy.

A small shoebox can teach a child about the love of God, lead

him or her to faith in Christ, inspire pastors, and plant new

churches. What goes into the box is fun, but what comes out is

eternal. Be a part of changing lives through the power of a simple

gift.

We will start collecting donations in

September and October and then have a

Christmas Box Packing Party in No-

vember.

Here is a link for some great gift ideas

for the boxes…

If you would like to volunteer to be on the OCC team or if you

have any questions please call Jennifer Sande 210-386-7903 or

email [email protected]

The time has at last arrived. Pastor Lee has scheduled a

Pre-Communion class for all our youth going into the 5th grade

this school year. Also invited to attend are any older students

who have not shared in a class of instruction in receiving Holy

Communion.

The class is on Saturday, September 26th in Fellowship Hall

from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Those wishing to take Holy

Communion need to attend this class and should contact the

church office by calling 830-980-2813 or emailing us at

[email protected] by Thursday, Sept. 24th.

It is really important that at least

one parent or guardian attend with

the student. We’ll look for you on

the 26th.

Announcements

Notary Services are now available in the

church office for disciples of St. Paul. Please

contact the office at 830-980-2813 or

[email protected] for details.

The Fellowship Committee is in need of volunteers to help

with donuts and coffee on Sunday morning. The donuts are

pre-ordered and can be picked up on Sunday mornings at

the HEB located on Hwy. 46. There are HEB gift cards that

can be picked up in the church office to purchase the

donuts, so there is no out of pocket expense. If you are interested in

helping with this wonderful ministry, please contact Phyllis Havens at

830-885-2270 or the church office.

We are in need of ushers, Communion Assistants

and volunteers for our Altar Guild. If you are

interested in serving in any of these areas, please

contact the church office at 830-980-2813 or

[email protected] for more information.

Please note a change...choir practice will

resume on Thursday, September 10 at

6:15 pm in the Sanctuary. Not on

September 3 as the August Epistle stated.

Our first performance will be on Sunday,

September 20 at the 8:30am service.

To my St. Paul Family,

Thank you for all the cards and prayers offered up on

my behalf during my illness. Also a big thank you to

everyone who came and spent time with me or brought

us food. You all made a very hard time for me a little

easier to bare. Even though I was not with you, I felt

your presence in your prayers each day. I love you all!

God Bless,

Karen Harder

I am truly thankful to each of you for your prayers and outreach dur-ing my latest health issues. I enjoyed your hospital visits, so much appreciated both Pastor Lee and Pastor Don for their visits and communion, felt your prayers, read your many emails, texts, and beautiful get well cards. Certainly I really enjoyed the great food several of you provided Evelyn and myself! And a special thanks to those of you who volunteered to drive me to my Hyperbarics treatments every morning for 4 weeks which gave Evelyn a "rest". I'm so grateful to finally get back to my "RedRoof" family and physically worship with you in the Sanctuary and my great Sunday School class. Prior to returning I was able to watch "online" the service and enjoyed being able to "participate ". If I were a visitor at our church I would not walk but run to become a member/disciple of the "RedRoof " family! I love each one of you!

Mike Gurganus and Family

"Never let your mind defeat your body".

We are looking for a volunteer that could help in the church library. This person only needs to match library cards to books in the return box and then reshelf the

books in the right spot. This job could probably be done in 10 or 15 minutes, maybe on Sunday morning, if you have time. If you can help, please contact Desi Snell at

830-237-9167 (cell) or email me at [email protected]

Dear Congregation,

I cannot thank you enough for hosting the pantry party for me. Your generosity is truly overwhelming! My pantry is certainly loaded, and I have all the kitchenware that I’ll ever need. It was hard finding space in my apartment for all of the stuff! You are all wonderful people and I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you more throughout my ministry here at

SPLC.

God Bless,

Andrew Cave
