  • THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY THE GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING!

This particular year we are gifted. In my childhood this Feast of the Epiphany, the revelation of the presence of the Christ in our world, was always celebrated on January 6th. Then, the Church changed the time of the Feasts

celebration and, as usual, caused havoc in the minds and hearts of many, many cultures! Oh, I know the reason for the change. This is too great a feast to slip through our fingers and minds as it may be remembered on a lovely week day of the year. Too many people will never hear Matthew’s Gospel account of the Magi who travels from distant lands to fall in worship before an infant child nestled in the arms of his mother in a house in the provincial village of Nazareth in Judea. It is far too important of a Gospel to be lost in the hustle and bustle of our time and culture. Too great a lesson of the hope of the Child of Bethlehem that we truly become a Church Community of many cultures, languages, customs and traditions as reflected in these travels from distant lands who saw in the infant Jesus not simply the “King of the Jews” but the hope for all people. Yes I know the reason . . . but . . . For many cultures this feast of the Epiphany actually eclipsed Christmas! In some parts of the world this was Christmas! Celebrated with great pomp and solemnity the revelation of the Light of the World, made visible by the Star that moved through the heavens and brought Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar to that house of Joseph, Mary and their Child trumped the feast of Bethlehem! They knew they needed that message. Remember that the early Church was a polyglot of Greeks, Romans, North Africans, Syrians, Jews, Egyptians and an assortment of many others, bound together by faith in that Light of the World born to guide us to the Light. And that is why the date of this feast was changed . . . because the reality of Church certainly hasn’t. We are still a polyglot of cultures, languages, races, sexual orientations, older and younger . . . all Church. People bound together by faith in the Child born that is the real Light of the World. And then there are those gifts! Now, as you may know, in many cultures, this day of Epiphany is the real day of gift giving. Usually not toys, electronics, clothing or such, but rather sweets and fruits. Oranges often top the gift list. I know these don’t have the dazzle of gold, frankincense or Myrrh, the splashy gifts of the Magi. Yet, in their simplicity and their sweetness they do remind us of the real gifts of this continued Christmas Feast. I always try to remind myself that Christmas gifts have nothing to do with ribbons and bows, nor come from any brink or mortar story or ordered on line, but rather come from the heart of the giver. Christ’s gift to us is his love . . . the Real Gifts of the Magi are their faith . . . the best gift we can give each other is both! The gift of our love of Christ shared by our love of others . . . our faith in Christ lived out in trust of others! So I am glad in the wisdom of the Church the date was changed. It’s still a bit confusing because in my family Epiphany was the day the tree came down! Now is it on the 6th of January or on the Sunday following the Feast of the Holy Family? Oh well . . . that one in my mind may never be solved! This year at least we start Epiphany on the 6th of January so have a blessed “Little Christmas” as Epiphany is often called and share those gifts!

    With Blessings and Love,

    Fr. Dan

WELCOME You enter this Church… not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. God is your heavenly Father. Come, then, with joy in your heart and thanks on your lips into God’s presence, offering God your love and service. Be grateful to the strong and the loyal ones who, in the name of Jesus Christ, built this place of worship and to all who have beautified it and hallowed it with their prayers and praise. Ask God’s blessing on those who love this house of faith as the inspiration of their labor, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit, and may that blessing rest on you, both on your going out and your coming in.

SOMETHING SPECIAL Sometimes we would like to do something special either in memory of a loved one or for a special occasion or simply to say “Thank You”. One way we do that is through Mass Intentions. However, it isn’t always possible to get the day or date we would like. With this in mind, we would like to give you the opportunity to either donate the Bread and Wine we use at all the liturgies for a week or to light the Sanctuary Lamp in someone’s memory for a week. The donation is $10. We have a card for you, either as a reminder or to present to a family. If you would like to make this donation you can stop by the rectory, just as you would to reserve a mass. Just a reminder, we will accept only one donation for bread and wine and one donation for the sanctuary lamp per week. We will also announce these intentions in the bulletin.

YOUR PARISH NEEDS YOUR GIFTS OF MINISTRY

Please consider ministering in our parish as a Lector or Communion Minister. We are in need of your gifts and talents so the presence of Christ in Word and Sacrament can be experienced …Please call the rectory at 973-694-3400.

The Pre-K enjoyed a wonderful Christmas season, as they learned about the baby Jesus and the true meaning of the season. The children loved the lighting of the Advent candles each week and the surprise of opening the boxes on our Advent calendar each day. They then lifted their voices in celebration on December 18 at a special Christmas concert and party. Parents and families were all invited to share in the celebration as the children sang some of their favorite Christmas carols. Afterwards, the children enjoyed a surprise visit from St. Nick himself, who came bringing special gifts for all. The Pre-K wishes everyone a Healthy and Happy 2018!
