E P I P H A N Y WE ARE COHEIRS OF THE PROMISE OF CHRIST …

There is a message that is fundamental to the Epiphany that we might not reflect on as thoroughly as we should. In today’s second reading from St. Paul to the Ephesians (Eph.3,6) we hear that the Church transcends national and cultural identities: in Christ, Jew and Gentile (that is all of us) form one body and share equally in the promise of the Resurrection.

The wise men, the Magi/Kings, came from the East. It was certainly difficult for the Jewish people of the first century to understand that a foreigner could be their equal in worshiping the Lord. Would God include others in His Plan for their salvation. Yes, the Epiphany tells us, this was always God’s plan.

When we envision the birth of the Lord, we tend to see him in the viewpoint of our own frame of reference. Joseph, Mary and Jesus were not Europeans, Puerto Ricans or Mexicans. They were all Semitic, people of that area of the world where the three races merge (Middle East).

St. Cardinal Newman said that “to be earnest in seeking the truth is an essential requisite in finding it.” The 3 Kings following of the star is a journey of faith, a journey that each one of us experiences in the course of our own life. The Magi/3Kings –-- non-believers in the eyes of Israel --- possess the humility of faith and the openness of mind and heart to seek and welcome the Jesus who will institute the Second Covenant between God and the New Israel.

The gifts of the Magi indicate the principal parts of Jesus’ mission: Gold - is a gift fitting for a king, a ruler, one with power and authority. Frankincense - is a gift for a priest, one who offers sacrifice it was an aromatic perfume sprinkled on the animals sacrificed in the Temple). Myrrh – is a fitting “gift” for someone who is to die (it was used for embalming before burial).

What we read and watch and listen to in search of wealth, fame and power are the “stars” we follow. The journey of the Magi in Matthew’s Gospel puts our own “stargazing in perspective. Today, how are we coheirs of the P R O M I S E of Christ???

Hay un mensaje que es fundamental para la Epifanía en el que podríamos no reflexionar tan a fondo como deberíamos. En la segunda lectura de hoy de San Pablo a los Efesios (Efesios 3,6), escuchamos que la Iglesia trasciende las identidades nacionales y culturales: en Cristo, judíos y gentiles (es decir, todos nosotros) formamos un cuerpo y compartimos por igual en el promesa de la resurrección. POPE FRANCIS: EPIPHANY THE MANIFESTATION OF THE LORD

“Saint Paul tells us in today’s second reading (Eph 3,:6) that the Lord has made Himself known to all the na-tions, today represented by the Magi. In this way, we see revealed the glory of a God who has come for every-one: every nation, language and people are welcomed and loved by Him. It is symbolized by the light, which penetrates and illumies all things. God makes Himself known for everyone but it is surprising How he does so. The Magi ask: “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? (Mt.2,2). They will find Him, but not where they thought: not in the royal palace of Jerusalem, but in a humble crib in Bethlehem. God does not need the spotlights of the world to make Himself known. God´s light does not shine on those who shine with their own light. It is always tempting to confuse God’s light with the lights of the world. In the first reading from the prophet Isaiah (60,2) we hear that light does not prevent the darkness and the thick clouds covering the earth but shines forth on those prepared to accept it. Today’s Gospel ends by saying that the 3 Kings / Magi, after encountering Jesus, “left for their own country by another road” (Mt.2:12). Mary and Joseph, like the Magi left home and became pilgrims on the paths of God. In order to find Jesus, we also need to take a different route, to follow a different path, His path, the path of humble love. Only those who leave behind their worldly attachments and undertake a journey find the mystery of God. Today we are asked to imitate the Magi who went to the Lord not to receive, but to give. The Gospel, in some sense, gives us a little ´gift list’, Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. Gold reminds us that God has to be granted first place, He has to be worshiped. Frankincense symbolizes a relationship with the Lord, prayer, which like incense rises up to God (Ps.141,2). Myrrh, the ointment that would be lovingly used to wrap the body of Jesus taken down from the cross (Jn.19,39). The Lord is pleased when we care for bodies racked by suffering, of those who can only receive without being able to give anything material in return. Precious in the eyes of God is mercy. If we can do this, His light will shine upon us.”

"San Pablo nos dice en la segunda lectura de hoy (Ef 3, 6) que el Señor se ha dado a conocer a todas las naciones, hoy representadas por los Reyes Magos. De esta manera, vemos revelada la gloria de un Dios que ha venido para todos: cada nación, idioma y pueblo son bienvenidos y amados por Él. Está simbolizado por la luz, que penetra e ilumina todas las cosas. Dios se da a conocer por todos, pero es sorprendente cómo lo hace. Los magos preguntan: “¿Dónde está el niño que nació rey de los judíos? (Mt.2,2). Lo encontrarán, pero no donde pensaban: no en el palacio real de Jerusalén, sino en una humilde cuna en Belén. Dios no necesita los reflectores del mundo para darse a conocer. La luz de Dios no brilla sobre aquellos que brillan con su propia luz. El Señor se complace cuando cuidamos cuerpos atormentados por el sufrimiento, de aquellos que solo pueden recibir sin poder dar nada material a cambio. Precioso a los ojos de Dios es la misericordia. Si podemos hacer esto, Su luz brillará sobre nosotros ".

Vincentian Quote: M A R Y ~ The Listening Disciple

Mary played a crucial role in the story of Jesus and has had an enormous influence in the history of Christianity that is why we begin every year dedicated to Mary – the Holy Mother of God. Mary is the ideal disciple, the model listener. She hears God’s word and acts on it. In Luke’s first two chapters Mary is evangelized by Gabriel, by Elizabeth, by the shepherds, by Simeon, by Anna, and by Jesus himself. All of them proclaim the good news of God’s presence to her and sing in praise of God’s goodness. Luke tells us that Mary kept all these things in her heart, turning them over and over again. (Lk 2:19 & 51). Mary’s response to what she hears from Gabriel is typical: “Be it done to me according to your word.” The whole of Christian life can be summed up in the Lucan phrase that describes Mary: “She listened to the word of God and acted on it.”

Baptism preparation class for parents and Godparents are held on the Tuesday prior to the Baptism Sunday. Parent(s) or Godparent(s), please bring an original birth certificate of the child to the main office where you can begin the process of registration for this beautiful sacrament.

Children’s Faith Formation ages 7 yrs. to 15 yrs. (Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation) Our Children’s Faith Formation program provides preparation of the Holy Sacraments for children. The program follows Diocesan Guidelines for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children. The hours for children's faith formation classes are Sunday, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Pentecost Confirmation 16 yrs. and older Are you baptized and received First Holy Communion but have not completed the Sacrament of Confirmation and you are over the age of 16? Our Confirmation only program begins in January in preparation for Pentecost Confirmation typically at the end of May or beginning of June.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) (Becoming a Catholic)

Are you baptized? Have you received First Holy Communion? Are you Confirmed? Adults and youth at least 16 yrs. of age seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church are invited to enter into a process of faith formation. RCIA classes are all year round.

LOS SACRAMENTOS Bautismo para bebes nacimiento a 6 años

Los bautismos para bebes se celebran el primer domingo de cada mes. La clase de preparación del bautismo para los padres y padrinos es el martes antes del domingo del bautismo. Padres o Padrinos, traiga el certificado de nacimiento original del niño a la oficina principal donde pueden comenzar el proceso de inscripción para este hermoso sacramento.

Formación de Fe para Niños 7 años hasta 15 años (Bautismo, Primera Comunión, Confirmación) El programa de formación de fe para nuestros niños se prepara los niños para sus Sacramentos. El programa sigue las Directrices Diocesanas para el Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de los Niños. Las horas para las clases son domingo, 9:30 A.M. -1:00 P.M.

Confirmación de Pentecostés 16 años y adelante ¿Se ha bautizado y recibido la Primera Comunión pero no ha completado el Sacramento de la Confirmación y tiene más de 16 años de edad? Nuestro programa de Confirmación solo comienza en enero en preparación para la Confirmación de Pentecostés típicamente en mayo o junio.
