What would happen if a group of Romani-an Gypsies or Afghan Muslims showed up at the parish or chancery, announcing that they had come to find the reformer who was about to make our church into what it ought to be? Our answer depends partly on where we position ourselves and how much the current state of affairs benefits, disturbs or disfavors us. No mat-

ter our starting point, we might find it a little disconcerting that the visitors, enthusiastic about our change, have come from another culture and faith tradition. Happily, the minute they admit that they got here by following a star, a good number of us would heave a sigh of relief and write them off as migrating citizens from a funny farm. The visitors said they were seeking a newborn whom they called the King of the Jews. Everybody familiar with their Bible stories knows that a king chosen by God can cause the reigning estab-lishment a lot of trouble. So with a great show of religiosity, Herod gathered the theologians to help the pilgrim band understand where the prophets said the savior would be born. As luck would have it, their wandering star coincided with the ancient prophe-cies, and the Magi soon found the child and his mother. Recog-nizing God’s presence in him, they offered him homage and gave him gifts that represented their hearts. Then, as sensitive to dreams as to astral signs, they avoided Herod and his kind, went home, never again to appear in Christian history. Fr Gene

Thank you! I'm frequently overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness shown to me by my parishioners. Once again you have demonstrate these qualities at Christmas, and I am so very grateful. Please know that I am touched by you all and thankful for being your priest. Let us thank God for making us in His image, and for giv-ing us mutual enjoyment of each others' companionship. Fr Gene A new year to live and grow in faith Most of us will make a New Year’s resolution as we begin 2019. Statistics show that most of us will not live out our resolution beyond the first few weeks of the year. We have to ask ourselves if we were if we were reasonable in what we promised to do, or if we were really all that committed to the resolution to start with! Perhaps this year, our goal should be realistic, have lasting impact on our lives, and the lives of those with whom we interact. Maybe this is the year we should focus on living and growing in faith. Faith is a gift from God, offered to each of us. Faith, too, requires an openness to the One who knows and loves us more than we know ourselves. Perhaps our resolution this year might be just this simple: let us promise to be open to Jesus and his call to live as his people. This is a resolution worth keeping!

We Must Answer the Shephard's Call “I think I’ve figured something out,” Andy said after Mass last Sunday. “There’s a natural flow to the message of the liturgy. Following all the happy celebration of Christmas, we’re called to reflect on the meaning of the visit of the Wise Men.” “You’re talking about the Epiphany of Christ,” I interjected. “Of course, Christ’s kingship, his divinity, were revealed to these pagans, “he re-plied. “That’s what ‘epiphany’ means, a manifestation.” Andy went on to explain that at Christmas we celebrated Christ’s birth, an event. On the Epiphany, we join the Wise Men in celebrating who this Christ Child is. “I think everyone understands that. Why are you so excited?” I asked. “I peeked, I read ahead in the missalette to the weekday Masses for the week after the Epiphany,” Andy said. “Every Communion Song is the same.” “That’s not unusual,” I replied. “There’s usually a theme for the week.” “But read it,” he said, handing me a missalette and pointing to the text. “I came that men may have life, and have it to the full, says the Lord,” it reads, taken from John 10:10. “First we celebrate what happened and where, then who the babe was, and now we’re introduced to why he came,” Andy said, beaming. “Soon it will Lent and Holy Week, and we’ll celebrate the ‘how’ Christ would bring this new life – by his Passion and Resurrection.” I thanked him for that insight and headed home for my Bible. The understanding of many of the short scriptural passages read at Mass can frequently be enriched by reading what comes before and after in the Bible. Such was the case this time. In John 10:10 Christ was instructing the Pharisees. He had just admonished them that the true shepherd enters the sheepfold through the gate, while thieves and marauders climb over the fence. He then said, “I am the sheep gate.” The true shepherd must come through him, and the sheep may enter and exit the sheepfold only through him. Verse 10 in full reads, “The thief comes only to steal and slaugh-ter and destroy, I came that they (the sheep) may have life and have it to the full.” (The New American Bible) While Christ’s immediate reference was to the unfaithful teachings of the Pharisees, there is a more cosmic scope to his mes-sage. Because of the fall of humanity, before Christ’s coming, all creation had been under the dominion of Satan, the thief and marauder. People lived, to be sure, and many lived good lives, but it was on a human level, a level broken, bent and crippled by unredeemed sin. Now it is a whole new picture. Christ has brought to mankind a new kind of life, a sharing in the very life of the Trinity. He is that life. We must choose. Either we will follow the thief, and be slaughtered and destroyed, or we may respond to Christ’s call to follow him to the abundance of life that only he can give. It is a war, and our eternal destiny is at sake. We can’t be neutral. We have to choose sides.
