After the English Civil War new colonies are established in America

• Puritans/Separatists leave England for New World for religious freedom– Don’t like Anglican Church

• Pilgrims had fled to Holland, don’t like it, join Puritans on Mayflower – establish Plymouth Colony

• Mayflower Compact reading

Mayflower Compact Written agreement by

consensus of Pilgrims arriving at New Plymouth in November 1620

Fair and equal laws, for the general good of the settlement and with the will of the majority

Colony was to be free of English law

Devised to set up government from within themselves and written by those to be governed
