VOTED as NUMBER 1 PRESIDENT of AREA 6!!!!

It has been a great Rotary-Year led by Rosa.

She has guided us through a very difficult time to

keep us safe from the pandemic and just

importantly supported and encouraged our

members to “keep the faith”.

Despite this year’s challenges, our club continues

to meet weekly, stay connected with those who have

been in other parts of the world as well as those

who have not attended the weekly Zoom meetings.

Due to the true dedication of our members and

Rosa’s perseverance, our Club has met its 2019-

2020 Goals (International Rotary and Club

Strategic Plan – read below).

Beyond the original goals, with Rosa’s guidance,

we developed a Recovery Plan. As a result, through

committee work, we were instrumental in

establishing WIFI stations in partnership with the

Aromas-San Juan Unified School District to support distance-learning for children and we

supported 3-4 food and supply distributions in San Juan Bautista.

Larry Cain:

Larry was born in 1938 in Salinas and was raised in Tres Piños

attending the Live Oak School and graduating from Hollister High School

(now San Benito High School).

While in high school, Larry earned the Future Farmers’ Award, which

led him to attend college in Fresno for a semester. However, life changes

happen and Larry returned to San Juan Bautista upon his father’s death.

He went to work as a tow-truck driver and then joined a company as an

engineering assistant.

Needing to further his education, Larry enrolled and attended the

University of Miami for one year and then attended UC San Francisco;

graduating with a degree in accounting with a minor in economics.

While at UC San Francisco, Larry asked Judy to marry him. They were

married on June 22nd 57-years ago.

Larry began his career with an ocean transportation company in San

Francisco as a chief account and later a partner in company. This position

led he and his family to New Orleans, and later Belize (19-years).

Larry’s Life Accomplishments:

U.S. National Guard (SGT A-6) (Completed in 1966)

Father of 5-children; 4-daughters and a son

Rotary:

⧫ First joined in Belize; 2-Term President

⧫ Co-Founder of the Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista (Charter Member)

San Juan Bautista: Previous Councilman, Mayor, City Manager

Mission San Juan Bautista Reconstruction Committee Member

Don Boys:

“I was born during the Great Depression

just like Larry during the aftermath of the

Second World War. I was a teenager during

the birth of Rock & Roll.

I was a young man during the Civil Rights

Movement in the ‘60’s, watching the foul

murder of John F. Kennedy, and the many

other things that happened.”

“The one thing in my life that I wanted to

mention is that I was a Sunday School Teacher

in 1964. The Civils Rights Law was passed

the year after John F. Kennedy was murdered.

A friend of mine, Will Picture, was also a

Sunday School Teacher at a little church

called Marks Place Methodist Church. Rev.

Gene at our church decided that we were going to celebrate a Civil Rights Sunday. We were going to

invite the Pastor of the Black church in Hazelwood to preach at our church and we were going to trade

choirs for one-Sunday.

As Sunday School Teachers, we were on the Board of Directors. We proposed that instead of doing

that (proposal by the Pastor), that we integrate the two-churches. If we are actually going to do this, we

need to do it right. The vote was 10 to 2 (against the 2-church integration proposal). The point is that

during the ‘60’s the focus of the civil rights’ movement was all in the South. There was a hell of a lot of

people in the North, that were happy about that because they didn’t have to really look what was in their

backyard and didn’t have to do anything about it. There were a few of us in Indiana that did work on this

issue.

The Black Lives Matter Movement; I don’t know about all of your opinions about what is going on. All

revolutions are bloody. It is not going to change unless people come forward like they are doing now. It

is so clear that things have to change. The Civil Rights’ Movement in the ‘60’s didn’t get the job done. It

is still here, Folks.”
