Gayatri proves her mettle

Ms Gayatri Phadke of SwitchgearTraining Centre (STC) - Pune, added

to her repertoire of medals by emergingtriumphant in the 8th Masters NationalAquatic Championship 2011 held atBangalore during December 22 to 24. Shewon a Bronze medal for clinching the 3rd

place in the 200 meter free style event. Shequalified for participation at the National event after winningfour medals (three Gold and a Silver) at the Masters StateAquatic Championship held at Aurangabad during November26 and 27. Gayatri represented Pune district at the statechampionship.

We are about to enter the New Year and I take thisopportunity to wish you all-round success and happiness

in the entire year ahead. As we go past an eventful 2011 thathas been marked by high inflation, hike in interest rate, economicslowdown, weakening of rupee, indecisiveness in governance, public outcry against corruption, we have had many bright spotsthat raise hopes for a better year ahead. Take heart the fact thatIndia has performed better than most emerging economiesdespite the slowdown phenomenon and the Eurozone crisis.

Amidst sluggish performance by manufacturing, exports sectorhas maintained the growth momentum and this has given hopesfor better prospects in 2012. Further, rural India has presenteda bright picture of progress as we have seen huge demand forvarious categories of products and services in this segment aswell as smaller towns. Specific to E&A, the last four monthshave been bumper for MK1; we clocked 30% growth in salesyear-on-year. With our well established brand of motor startersand other innovative products, our Agri team has done acommendable job of tapping the potential of rural marketsthrough market development events and efforts.

On productivity parameter, MPS has broken its record ofmanufacturing 2 million meters in just over eight months. In theremaining period of current financial year, they should continuewith the good work and haul the 3 million target. They have tolook at opportunities in the rural segment.

On the international business front, it is pleasing to know thatswitchboards and automation teams have bagged an order ofUS $ 22 million for supply of switchboards andtelecommunications package including transmission networkand CCTV monitoring for an inter refinery pipelines (IRP II)project in Abu Dhabi. E&A’s selection for participation in thisproject is a reflection of technological advantage and projectexecution skills in the Middle East region.

Rapid changes in the market have resulted into limited growth. While a revival in the international market is expected to beslow, the economic activities in India will pick up speed in therural segment. Over 700 million people live in rural India andcontribute around 48% (` 38 trillion) of the approximately` 79 trillion GDP. Rural customers are no longer looking for thecheapest product and this market is not homogeneous; thereare geographical, cultural and demographical differences. Therural middle class is becoming aspirational and thinking like itsurban counterpart.

The sheer size and potential of this market with low penetrationby organized players is the large opportunity for E&A. There aresome key projects in the rural development that the governmenthas identified and is focused on. These are Bharat Nirman forcreating basic rural infrastructure, Mahatma Gandhi NationalRural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for enhancingthe livelihood security of people in rural areas by guaranteeing100 days of wage-employment, JawaharLal Nehru NationalUrban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for improving andaugmenting the economic and social infrastructure of cities aswell as affordable housing and basic services to the urban poor,National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) for effective healthcareto rural population throughout the country with special focus on18 states and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY) for achieving4% annual growth in the agriculture sector.

Specific to electricity, there is Jawaharlal Nehru National SolarMission (JNNSM) that envisages establishing India as a globalleader in solar energy. It is a major initiative of central and state

governments to promote ecologically sustainable growth whileaddressing India’s energy security challenge. An ambitioustarget of 20,000 MW of solar power by the year 2022 has beenset under the mission..

We have the entire basket of products and solutions that can fitfor consumption in these projects and I would like to draw yourattention to ensure that E&A become a par t of thesedevelopment initiatives.

With food inflation easing to its lowest in nearly six years in mid-December on improved supplies, hopes have brightened for acooling off in overall inflation that will allow the RBI to revivegrowth by cutting rates. Internally, we will have to critically lookat all capital investments and loosen the purse only where thereis a guaranteed high-return on investment. Efficiency andproductivity should be everyone’s concern. We have no roomfor laxity. All of us have to enhance our efficiency levels, a coupleof notches, to meet the need of the hour. It is with largerparticipation and high level of efficiency, innovativeness andcommitment that we have to re-look at the Strategic Plan in thenext 100 days and tap all the opportunities.

Let us work smart and create opportunity in every challenge.

Happy New Year to you & your family.

It was a pleasant coincidence thatChairman & Managing Director, Mr. A. M.

Heattributed this success tothe efforts of the MPSteam that not only workedefficiently but alsofollowed the bestmanufacturing practicesat both in-house and thesuppliers’ end therebyminimizing waste.

The large scale manufacturing in a recordtime was undertaken to meet the ordersfrom customers like WBSEDCL, DHBVNL

and different distr ibutioncompanies of GEB and KEB.Having been accorded thehighest vendor rating amongall meter supplies, MPSteams have worked with fullsteam to meet the deliveryschedules. A number offactors that contributed to thisfeat included availability ofproven designs for meetingcustomers’ expectations, systematic planning for theexecution of all orders, maintenance of safety stock

for long lead time items, both mechanicaland electronics, timely supplies of sub-assemblies from suppliers, uniform in-house production, improved quality andreliability, seamless flow of material dueto third par ty logistics stores forcomponents as well as finished goodsand, above all, team work includingadministrative support. The fact that this achievement has comewithin two years of MPS achieving onemillion single phase meters in a financialyear on December 22, 2009 highlights thesignificant improvement in all areas ofoperations. With the dawn of 2012 gettingcloser, MPS is gearing up to meet newchallenges with lots of confidence andenthusiasm.

MPS hits new productivity milestone;rolls out 2 million meters in record time

Productivity records are tumbling onthe manufacturing shop of Metering

& Protection Systems (MPS) at its Mysorefacility. This month, MPS bettered its ownrecord by rolling out two million energymeters in a record time of little over eightmonths.

2011 has been one of the most successfulyears for MPS manufacturing as itachieved all the budgeted figures for theyear. Early this year, MPS had completedproduction of two million single phaseenergy meters within a span of just over10 months (April 2010 to February 2011).It made a new record of touching thesecond two million mark in the period ofApril 2011 to mid-December 2011.

It was a pleasant coincidence thatChairman & Managing Director, Mr. A. M.

Naik visited the Mysorecampus along with theAdvisor, Mr. R.N. Mukhijato motivate the MPS teamand release the twomillionth energy meter onDecember 16.

With the dawn of 2012 gettingcloser, MPS is gearing up to meet newchallenges with lots of confidence andenthusiasm.

to her repertoire of medals by emergingtriumphant in the 8th Masters NationalAquatic Championship 2011 held atBangalore during December 22 to 24.
