My understanding of the language was limited and this realization came

when I was asked to clear the IELTS test and the very need to clear the examination lead to me working hard on my language and its effective usage. Before I start off with my experience with IELTS, I would like to enlighten you about what IELTS is.

IELTS, International English Language Testing System, is the world’s proven English language test. IELTS was one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing over 17 years ago, and continues to set the standard for English language testing today.

Close to 6000 organizations and more than 1.4 million test takers around the world trust and recognize IELTS as a secure, valid and reliable indicator of true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional

accreditation. IELTS is jointly managed by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) through more than 500 locations in 130 countries.

So I started off to choose from the IELTS training institutes in the city and eventually zeroed in on a lesser publicized institute called IELTS Direct. This was recommended by students who were trained out of this institute, initially I was not sure whether to join but then the strong recommendation pulled me in. The training and faculty was sensationally helpful, in understanding the importance and the various aspects of the language. And about the institute I would say that, IELTS Direct is a premier educational institution where quality IELTS training is imparted by some of the most talented trainers in the field. The training is imparted by incorporating the state of the

art technology in a personalized manner. Apart from training students in all aspects of English, they are motivated to go through the course by various techniques derived from the insights of educational psychology. It is only a just claim that their work has yielded an amazing degree of success.

Their efforts have been instrumental in the successful departure of many aspiring young people to the best destinations for education and work across the globe.

To stand as a testimony is the result of the students who scored a 9/9. Some of them are Sreejith (l), Joby Jose (R), Hilal A Rahman(R), Sijo George Jacob (L), Joyce James (R), Ajith john (R) and me being one of I am simply thankful for the support and quality training that was imparted to me. Though less publicized, I believe IELTS Direct is the right place to learn the language and go places.

Fun facts

(1) “Dreamt” is the only English word that ends in the letters “mt”.(2) The longest one-syllable word in the English language is “screeched.”(3) There are 22 countries where more than half the population is illiterate. Fifteen of them are in Africa.(4) China has more English speakers than the United States.(5) “I am.” is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.(6) The longest word in the English language is 1909 letters long and it refers to a distinct part of DNA.(7) The word racecar and kayak are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left.(8) ‘Stewardesses’ is the longest word that is typed with only the left hand.(9) The only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating a letter is “uncopyrightable”(10) TYPEWRITER, is the longest word that can be made using the letters on only one row of the keyboard.

IELTS, sets the standard for English language testing today. An individuals experience with IELTS test and the training he

went through

1. The IELTS test is not more difficult than other English tests. The IELTS test is not necessarily any more dif-ficult than other tests, but not all tests assess the same skills. The IELTS test will certainly chal-lenge you because the training course you are considering will be tough, too.

2. The IELTS tests are uniform world over. There are many versions of test, and at any given examination there may be a different version being given at a centre. However, IELTS is a stan-dardised, global test.

3. One can get a better score by attend-ing IELTS training centresIf one has the confidence and the expertise of the language then may be it would be easier but if you have proper support from a well established and efficient training institute that would reflect in your score.

4. If you think that his score is not ac-curate, you can recheckIf you have received a Band Score that is clearly an error, you have the right to have your test pa-pers and speaking assessment re-evaluated. But remember that this process costs extra, and the second set of Band Scores is official, even if one or more of these scores is lower than before.

5. To get a good result in the IELTS test one should practice test and analyze one’s errors.Achieving a satisfactory Overall Band Score is the result of a number of strategies, not on one just taking practice tests. And, definitely, if you do a practice test, you must work out why you made each and every mistake; otherwise you are missing out on valuable ‘learning’ time.

Gold Coin Barrels

There are 10 barrels containing gold coins. In that, 9 barrels contains 1 gram gold coins and the other barrel contains 2 gram coins. Every coin ap-pears to be same without any differ-ence. As the barrels weigh more, so it cannot be lifted or moved from its place. There is a weighing machine which is allowed to weigh only once. How to find that which of the barrels contain 2 gram coins.

totally there are 10 barrels. take 1 coin from first barrel, 2 coins from second barrel, 3 coins from third barrel, as on for ten barrels. Now consider that if every barrel contains 1 gram coins, the total weight of the coins picked from the barrels will be 55 grams. If the 2 gram coin is in the first barrel,

then the total weight will be 56 grams. If it is in second barrel, the total weight will be 57 grams.Just subtract the considered weight 55 from the total weight, you will get the barrel which contains 2 gram gold coins.

Book

From a book, a number of consecutive pages are missing. The sum of the page numbers of these pages is 9808. Which pages are missing?

Let the number of missing pages be n and the first missing page p+1. Then the pages p+1 up to and includ-ing p+n are missing, and n times the average of the numbers of the missing pages must be equal to 9808: n(((p+1)+(p+n))/2)=9808 In other words:

n*(2*p+n+1)/2=2*2*2*2*613So:n*(2*p+n+1)= 2*2*2*2*2*613 One of the two terms n and 2*p+n+1 must be even, and the other one must be odd. Moreover, the term n must be smaller than the term 2*p+n+1.It fol-lows that there are only two solutions: n=1 and 2*(p+n+1)=2*2*2*2*2*613, so n=1 and p=9808, so only page 9808 is missing. n=2*2*2*2*2 and 2*p+n+1=613, so n=32 and p=290, so the pages 291 up to and including 322 are missing. Because it is asked which pages (plural) are missing, the solution is: the pages 291 up to and including 322 are missing.

Boxes

Midas has boxes in three sizes: large, medium, and small. He puts 11 large

boxes on a table. He leaves some of these boxes empty, and in all the other boxes he puts 8 medium boxes. He leaves some of these medium boxes empty, and in all the other medium boxes he puts 8 (empty) small boxes. Now, 102 of all the boxes on the table are empty. How many boxes has Midas used in total?

By putting 8 boxes in a box, the total number of empty boxes increases by 8-1 = 7.If we call x the number of times that 8 boxes have been put in a box, we know that 11 + 7x = 102. It follows that x=13. In total, 11 + 13 * 8 = 115 boxes have been used.

With Canadian schools consistently strong performers in world rankings, international students have discov-ered the benefits of studying in Can-

ada, and local students are delighted with the value of business education at home.

The quality of Canadian business schools is comparable to programs in the U.S. According to BusinessWeek, five of the top 10 MBA programs outside the U.S. are in Canada – including Ivey Busi-ness School while the latest Financial Times rank-ing has six Canadian MBA programs in the top 100. The QS Global Recruiters’ Top 100 Business Schools 2007, the most international survey of recruiters’ preferred schools, lists five Canadian schools in the top 40.

Canada is one of the world’s most ethnically di-verse countries. More than 13 million immigrants have come to Canada in the past century. That di-versity is expected to grow and it is estimated that visible minorities will make up 20 per cent of Cana-da’s population by 2017. The diversity of the coun-try’s population is reflected in the diversity of the classroom at Canada’s business schools so students looking for international experience and exposure can get it without necessarily having to study over-seas. That said, an increasing number of Canada’s top business schools have international trips to emerging hotspots such as India and China.

Canada’s varied economic base includes high-tech firms, biotechnology, manufacturing, agri-culture and a large service sector. The country is a member of the G-8 and has a population of about 33.2 million spread across one of the largest and most geographically diverse countries in the world. Canada consistently ranks near the top of quality of life surveys. The United Nations ranked Canada fourth on its Human Development Index in 2007-2008.

Its natural heritage is stunning, with more than 40 national parks that are among the best in the world. They encompass huge tracts of wilderness in the north, ocean playgrounds on the coasts and easily accessible hiking and canoeing. The vast geography of Canada has also helped shape its in-

habitants, building a nation of resourceful and en-trepreneurial people with small- and medium-sized businesses accounting for nearly half of the coun-try’s GDP.

Canadian business schools recognize the impor-tance of enhancing the entrepreneurial spirit. The Pierre L. Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship at the Ivey Business School focuses on enhancing an entrepreneur’s ability to create value in high growth enterprises. As well as offering courses and programs to students, the institute also works with small- and medium-sized companies to deal with and overcome challenges to growth.

Canada is home to many entrepreneurial suc-cess stories including Research in Motion, the creator of the Blackberry, Cirque de Soleil, one of the most creative entertainment companies in the world and Thomson Reuters, a large international multimedia news organization.

It is also home to many successful large-cap companies including a large group of financial ser-vices companies such as Manulife Financial, Sun Life Financial, Royal Bank of Canada and Scotia-bank. Canada also has a strong presence in oil and gas, including Suncor, EnCana and PetroCanada, as well as global mining companies such as Barrick Gold, Potash, Cameco and TeckCominco.

As well, many international companies recruit at Canadian business schools including Accenture, Johnson & Johnson, Deloitte, IBM, General Mills, Sears, Eli Lilly and InBev.

The good news for students applying from abroad is that Canada has made it easy to study and work here and, for international students interested in staying in Canada, there’s a high success rate for finding jobs here. For instance, international stu-dents can stay and work in Canada for up to one year after graduation without needing a job offer first, so that they can gain international work expe-rience, which is a top requirement for senior leaders these days.

Some Canadian business schools have been branching out internationally. Ivey is committed to building a presence in Asia and is the world’s largest producer of Asian cases. In fact, Ivey’s focus on the

case-method of learning differenti-ates it from other business schools. Students tackle hundreds of cases, putting them in a strong position to understand the theory and the practical solutions to business chal-lenges.

An intense evaluation of the com-plexity of doing business in today’s increasingly fast-paced and global

society caused Ivey to move to a cur-riculum of cross-enterprise leader-ship a few years ago. Cross-enterprise leadership is a holistic, issues-based approach to teaching business edu-cation to prepare students for the re-ality they’ll face when they step into the business world.

Students at many Canadian busi-ness schools also take advantage

of opportunities to work with local non-profit organizations. The stu-dents give back to their communities through pro-bono consulting, com-munity clean-up days, fund-raising and environmental initiatives such as tree-planting.

As more students in Canada and elsewhere have become more en-gaged in social entrepreneurship ac-

tivities, Ivey has also made that kind of giving back integral to its pro-grams. The School’s mission state-ment is to develop business leaders who think globally, act strategically and contribute to the societies within which they operate.

Career goals and feasibilityTry to narrow down the types of career you would like to pursue. While making your decision understand what employers want and where opportunities will be plentiful. It will be an added advantage if you have a strong degree and two or more years of successful work experience. You need to have a vision of how you can progress in your current industry or function. You cannot just hope that an MBA will help you to do something new without any real plan.

Self-assessment A realistic self-assessment of your abilities and skills base will help you to make a more focused selection of schools. Analyse your motivations. Do not take an MBA just because you have recently graduated and cannot find a job.

Most applicants opt for an MBA to improve career prospects, learn new skills and create a personal network. Other motivators are bringing about a career change, increasing salary and starting a business.

In a year or two a recovering economy is going to need more business leaders of your profile, and an MBA will equip you to take advantage.

Budget and study mode The full-time MBA is still by far the most popular program. Executive MBAs, which require a minimum of six years prior work experience in various international universities and allow modular study periods while you carry on working, are growing in popularity. Part-time and distance learning MBAs are also options. The full-time MBA in north america and many European countries is typically two years and is expensive as compared to the indian b schools. Financial aid may be available. Scholarships are offered by a variety of organisations, and many banks offer low-start loans.

Research and selection criteria With so many schools to pick from, you need a rational selection approach. Decide what criteria matter to you and aim to identify five schools that match up and for which you believe you can meet the entry criteria. With so many rankings producing different results, applicants are seeking alternative criteria. The most popular selection criteria, in order of importance, are: career placement record, return on investment, school reputation, academic staff quality,

specialisations, student profile, rankings, scholarships and location.

Many candidates pick a school because of a specialisation. For example, someone seeking to start their own business should look for a school with a strong entrepreneurship faculty, incubator facilities and access to venture capital. In Europe several schools specialise in this field.

Meet the schools face-to-face It is important to meet school representatives and alumni to make sure there is a personal fit and to confirm your research findings. Ideally, visit the school campus. If this is not possible, then there are many world mba tours in the lines of the QS World MBA tour which is a perfect platform.

How to choose an MBAStudy Abroad

Choosing the right course begins by taking a look at oneself. One good strategy is to adopt the following five steps in making a decision. These steps would encourage you to assess your personal strengths and objectives.and also to do your own research to ensure that you select the right course.

At the age of eighteen, you become an adult. You gain the right to decide, move freely and lead your life your own way and choose

your path of education. But in India, you still remain under the clutches of rules, grades, criteria and regulations. When miles across, the students write their own destiny outside their homes, here the students have to struggle with the system to even come out of it.

With the Indian education system being bound with various criteria it leaves students with no options of their own to even express their freedom to gain education the way and in the time they want. Not having the right score to pass an exam, the financial conditions posing as a barrier from attending the exams, the sudden misfortunes, unpredicted circumstances; are few among those criteria of which many Indian students have become victim of and have lost their precious years of gaining knowledge.

According to an international magazine, while the rest of the world would face the coming years with an aging population, India will grow increasingly younger. As per the India’s census bureau, 40% of the populace is below the age of 18, and by 2015, 55% will be under 20. But even though its a matter of pride, the shocking news is that India could easily squander its demographic edge.

Despite the success of a few world-class schools such as the Indian Institutes of Technology, India’s education system is

in a dismal state overall. India spends just 3.5% of its gross domestic product on education, way below China’s 8%. Of its 1 million schools, most are state-run and substandard. But among the majority of students enrolled in primary school, by the age of 10 about 40% have dropped out. Most of all, just over a third of high school students graduate and even only a fewer move ahead the path.

Need for an educational revolutionThe shocking statistics itself reveals the degrading educational procedures and loopholes of the country. A remarkable revolution is the need of the hour. A brand new system, impeccable procedures, an ultimate solution to all barriers in the path of education. The Dubai based Edex Corporation in association with the Association of Business Executives (ABE) has come forward with a new step on the path bringing the International Educational System to the state of Kerala in India.

With the concept of International Graduate School, the venture aims at providing equal opportunities to all brushing away all borders and barriers. Turning away all the criteria and giving the complete freedom to students to decide on what to do and when to study, the entire program will soon create tremors in the education system. To achieve such an apt career revolution in what is needed in the society as well.

According to a study, those students who face such problems and are

considered as at-risk students, have special skills imbedded in them which most of the time get unnoticed. A program which would widen their prospects and give them opportunity to come forward again would surely make the difference. With India being a country with a mix of population that vary on basis of class, creed and status; providing equal opportunities would need proper system which considers the situations of all.

What makes the differenceThe venture introduced for the first in Kerala covers all avenues and paves way for a bright future of the educational system. The Dubai based Edex Corporation in association with Association of Business Executives (ABE), which is a professional membership body and an examination board; aims to achieve the same. ABE develops business and management qualifications at certificate, diploma, advanced diploma and postgraduate diploma level. The main advantage of ABE qualifications is that it provides progression routes to degree and masters programs worldwide.

Keeping a certain set of values on which it works, the offered qualifications are relevant , recognized and respected all over. Developed in par with the very latest industrial standards, the qualifications are compiled after proper consultation with sector skills councils and employers. This practical approach of the venture makes it special and different from others.

One of the major aspects which makes the venture unique is its accessibility. Anyone can apply without any special criteria. Keeping pace with the fast moving world, it reflects and adapts to the latest and most relevant educational thinking, ABE is recognized around the world - from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) in the UK to Ministries of Education and Employers in other countries.

Best quality education at doorstepAmong the topmost successful

Indians, we are sure to find many drop outs. Though only few are able to emerge out of the system, the rest majority are still in the darkness. We ourselves notice many among us who have left their studies due to financial, situational reasons.

With the programs offered by this venture, the students who unfortunately had to discontinue their education can continue their path where they stopped at the time they want. Those who had to quit their studies to work, those who wanted to take a break; all of them can come back and rejoin their degree programs from the year they stopped

Not just that the students can learn what they want from the best source available that too of the international standards. Compared to Rs 20 lakhs course fee abroad, students can attain the same knowledge at Rs 2-4 lakhs in

Kerala. Easing the process of loan availability, it saves lakhs of rupees for the aspiring students.

With the degrees having global recognition, the students can easily pave way for a bright future. Right from study material to proper training and guidance to recruitments, the entire program is a dream come true for the students. It also offers flexible timings of part-time and full-time too.

10 Indian Education System and Critics

April, 2010

The Indian education system, though it sounds oxymoronic, has over the period and for long been helped ev-ery “literate” Indian a stable job and

“live happily ever after”, but would that be an education system or should we call it a weak bargain for making quick money. “Money wise” and “Mind Foolish” is what we are taught through our educational system. The success of the Indian education system at the primary level depends not on the quality edu-cation but the degraded marking system that determines the quality of a student. The issue doesn’t end with the scoring and the grading system, even the way how the education is imparted matters. What we failed to under-stand is what Vivekananda said “Education is the manifestation of perfection already present in man” and not sketching charac-ters and asking students to fit into the role. Currently Indian education system focuses too much on facts and figures thereby kill-ing the creativity, analytical and reasoning skills among children. It does not encourage questioning by the students. The mindset is so developed that whatever is said by the teachers has to be taken as correct without any cross-questioning. In fact, the mindset is developed by parents themselves as they don’t encourage their children to question elders. All these things lead to regimented and conditioned mindset among children at the initial stage itself. In fact, it is at this stage children develop their inquisitiveness, logi-

cal, analytical and thinking skills.

Bringing in the Change. We borrowed the educational system from the west but what we failed to understand that education systems are time bound. The west moved over to a better educational system but we are still stuck with the old “from the books” educational system. Un-fortunately, we have not overhauled our educational system since long. Commer-cialization of Indian educational system is another cause for concern and when we say commercialization, its not about the corpo-rate interference but the need to sell edu-cation with the only aim of making money The Indian educational system should em-phasis more on personality development, skills and the skills that would enable a stu-dent to use them through out his life, lead-ership development and motivation which enable the students to get tuned with the corporate needs post completing the educa-tion and this will surely add on to the corpo-rate acceptance and professional quality.

The education council should pay spe-cial attention while recruiting teachers and academic councilors. Teaching as a profes-sion should be by choice and not under circumstances and when this happens the quality of teaching will improvise in India. Psychology should be considered and be im-parted during teachers training, this will help the teachers in gauging the students and in-

dividual potential and thus the teachers can provide a tailor made system for individual students in their teaching methodology. In-dians are poor team workers. They should be taught about team spirit and they should also be taught how to manage group dynamics. Don’t force children to learn. Encourage and facilitate them to learn. Don’t dump them with lot of stuff. Instead, encourage their imagina-tion. And finally, don’t force Indian children to work hard but make them to work smart. Career Oriented Education

Ironically Indian work force is sought af-ter the world over and not because they have expertise, well some do, but because we are known for the hard work and dedication we put in at the work place in the initial years to prove ourselves. If we could bring in a little bit of skill based education then we can sure-ly score with more smart work rather than the hard work we put in. When we look at the stu-dents, it is basically their hard working abili-ties and self-preparation enables them to suc-ceed at the academic level. Even though the quality faculty is not inducted at professional institutions the Indian students excel by the dint of their hard work and self-preparation. We have the tendency to highlight problems not solutions; we have tendency to talk of barriers not bridges; we have tendency to talk of challenges, but not overcoming them. Its time for us to walk the talk and walk thoughtfully.

Indian Education is Wealth: Limited Wealth

Indian Education Goes International

Indian students will soon be able to get cer-tificates of international level without going abroad. The Central Board of Secondary Educa-

tion (CBSE) is launching its international brand, CBSE-I, on April 1 in West Asia and the Gulf to grant certification on the lines of the Geneva-based International Baccalaureate (IB) and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), affiliated to Cambridge University.

About 25 schools from Oman, Muscat, Qatar, Dubai, Singapore, Kuwait and other countries will shift to this “international brand” of Indian edu-cation system in the coming academic session. Some schools in these countries, which are already affiliated to CBSE, will be re-affiliated to the global board.

While the government says CBSE-I is part of “soft diplomacy”, an official in the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) said it will help in making India a global brand in education. The official said soon the option of international-level education by a local brand will be available to all schools in India who can switch to CBSE-I.

“CBSE-I will take roughly three years to stabilise, after which it would look at India. We expect in the long term, people in India will also demand it. Accordingly, the option will be available to schools here.”

The CBSE announcement comes at a time when many schools in India have started opting for IB af-filiation. It is believed that an IB certificate helps in getting into top international universities faster. IB has about 8 lakh registered students in 2,861 schools in 138 countries. In India, there are 66 IB-affiliated schools. They include Bangalore International School, Delhi Public International School, Dhirub-hai Ambani International School and DY Patil School.

Partnering for a better education system

McGraw-Hill Education, one of the largest education companies in the world, to-day announced it is expanding its part-nership with Tata to deliver additional

professional training courses to help India develop its globally competitive workforce. Building on the success of the recently launched Tata McGraw-Hill retail sales and services pilot program, the company

will offer training courses in Banking/Financial Services and English Language that help India’s workers acquire the skills they need to succeed in the increasingly global economy. McGraw-Hill Educa-tion is experiencing double-digit growth in India, and Tata McGraw-Hill represents one of McGraw-Hill’s most successful partnerships.

Children’s right to educa-tion: India takes a step Ahead

It is now legally enforceable for every child to de-mand free and elementary education between the ages of six and 14 years.

Indian PM Manmohan Singh said enough funds would be made available to ensure that chil-dren had access to education.

An estimated eight million children aged be-tween six and 14 do not currently attend school in India. Mr Singh said that the government was com-mitted “to ensuring that all children irrespective of gender and social category have access to education”.

Recalling his own childhood, Mr Singh, a quali-fied economist, said: “I read under the dim light of a kerosene lamp. I am what I am totally because of education.”

“So I want that the light of education should reach to all,” Mr Singh added.

MovingIn But Cautiously

Foreign universi-ties are respond-ing cautiously to India’s proposed

legislation that would make it easier for them to set up full-fledged campuses here.Foreign universities want to expand their presence in India, senior administrators at these universities say, but they don’t expect to immediately build their own campuses even if the law is passed. The proposal was approved by the cabinet last week and is expected to be introduced in Parlia-

ment this month.“We are waiting and keeping in touch with com-panies and the ministry to see how the legislation plays out and what options might emerge,” said Mark Kamlet, provost and senior vice-president at Pitts-burgh’s Carnegie Mellon University. The legislation would potentially open a huge market to international educational institutions. But university administrators say the law likely won’t give them enough flexibility in admissions and hiring to set upstand-alone degree programmes. With at least 490 universities and 20,769 colleges, India has among the largest number of higher edu-cation institutions in the world, according to report by the HRD ministry. Many say they would rather increase collaborations with Indian universities, which is permitted under the current regime.

12 Revolution

India is one country which has the largest number of drop outs when it comes to education and this number includes those who

dropped out willingly and the others who dropped out under pressure. We can blame the real life situations for the ever increasing number of “in-complete educated people” or we can blame the stringent education system. Apart from the drop out rates, some-thing that bothers is the quality of the Indian youth in terms of the profes-sional and the real world exposure that they gain during their academic days. Even worst is the case of those who are academically qualified and still have to go through a dozens of test to qualify

oneself to work abroad. So do we have a system or an educational structure that would be easy on the present generation youth and at the same time give them enough opportunity and flexibility to study and work along or better study, take a break to work and then start studying again from where they left.

So to the rescue of some who are willing to and wish to study at their will, we have an educational structure accredited ABE (The Association of Business Executives). About ABE, It (The Association of Business Execu-tives) was founded in 1973 by a group of industrialists, educationalists and politicians as a non-profit making

institution. ABE’s aim was to become a market leader in the cost-effective provision of quality British manage-ment education leading to awards which were valued in their own right, but which were also recognised as an accepted route into the later stages of a number of UK and overseas pro-fessional or university institutions. ABE has run a series of programmes primarily focused on business and management, which have been con-sistently reviewed every three to five years to meet the contemporary needs of the market.

ABE has a credit system for each academic session you complete and this lets you pursue your education

with intervals to work or whatever you wish to pursue. The ABE accredited programmes are world renowned. The ABE qualified professionals are sought after amongst corporate houses world over for the internationally designed course structure along with profes-sional exposure that the students gain while they study complete their course. While you are pursuing your graduation under the ABE accredited course, you can pursue your gradu-ation over a period with intervals to work and thus enabling students earn and in between study. This also lets you choose from various ABE accred-ited institutions from world over to complete your programme.
