On September 5, 2018, NC School Report Card grades came out! There was an excitement in the air as Principal LaAlice Hopkins, made the morning announcement to students and staff that they had earned a letter grade of an C for the 2017-2018 school year. Students and staff cheered throughout the building. Later in a school meeting, administration analyzed the data for the letter grade to staff to provide them a better understanding of their areas of strength and focus on areas of improvement for the upcoming school year. The staff and students are more determined than ever to continually improve. Principal Hopkins stated, "we have the momentum going and we can't stop here. This is not a time to get complacent but to push ourselves even harder".

This school year, WCHS implemented a new program geared towards promoting a healthy community of students and staff with the formation of NEST. NEST stands for Nurturing Every Students' Transformation. NEST is a form of house systems that is common in England and at many colleges and universities throughout the nation.

The purpose of NEST is to help students build a solid school culture that evokes a nurturing environment; strengthen a positive school identity; and increase the sense of belonging within the school community. We have a total of five NESTs, each one represents a character trait we would like our students to embody.

On Monday, August 27th, students participated in their first NEST meeting. Each NEST had a time to compete in the Hula Hoop and the Focus Ring Challenge. It was an atmosphere, that was full of excitement, music, laughter, and enjoyment. Ms. Gilbert, the Assistant Principal, organized the event and stated, "our first meeting was a success. It gave the students time to team build across grade levels and grasp the concept of what it means to be a true school family. Our goal is to continually build and educate our students in all domains".

Warren County High School, ROTC students were provided a challenge where they had to use their mind and body. On Friday, September 7th, the students were challenged to climb to the top of a rock wall. Some of the students successfully made it to the top and overcame their fears. ROTC cadet, Elder Biddle was asked what lesson did he learn and his response was ?Have no fear?. We, also, asked him, ?Was it difficult to climb the wall?? He replied, ?I had to use both my legs and arms so I guess it was a litt le difficult because I kept losing my grip.?

Colonel Paige, the head of ROTC, specified that

the challenge was given to the students to

teach them about team building, strength, and

confidence. The ROTC will be bringing more

challenges to their students to teach them

more lessons. This was the third time doing

something like this for the cadets. Since the

obstacles are shared with all ROTC units in the

state; it usually doesn?t arrive in Warren County

as much as they would like. The obstacles go to

different states and only stays for 60 days and

covers the whole state. They have to sign up

ahead of time or else there will be no space

left.

Warren County High School, on Monday, September 10, 2018 held Senior-Parent night. It was a night where seniors and their parents came out to find out important information about the school year. Seniors need to accomplish many tasks before they can walk across the stage. One of the most important subjects that was discussed was attendance. "YOU GOTTA COME TO SCHOOL!? said Ms. Jenkins the guidance counselor. They stated that it is important for kids to come to school, especially seniors, because they need to be here to hear important information which they can easily miss. Another important topic was FAFSA, which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is a way to help students get funding for college. Students are eligible for fee waivers which allows them to apply to more colleges with no application cost. To learn more information about FAFSA you should see the college advisor Ms. Burwell. Also, Ms. Pamela Jordan who holds the position of senior advisor discussed that the senior class is selling raffle tickets which help the seniors cover senior dues. The goal is for seniors to raise a $100 to cover their dues. If they go pass this goal, it will help cover additional items like cap and gown, or purchase senior merchandise.
