Principal’s Message

Dear Northwoods Elementary Families, Thanks for taking the time to check out this special edition of The Wire. We care about communicating with families and want to make sure that you are receiving information from us. Please take the time to let us know how you’d prefer to receive the information each week in The Wire. We try to have it be a one-stop shop for upcoming school

events, relevant and timely information about your child’s learning and/or school environment, community opportunities, and more. In addition to The Wire we also share glimpses and highlights of different activities as well as upcoming events on our school’s Facebook page. If you haven’t already, make sure to “like” us and “follow” us so that you can see the latest happenings. Finally, if you have other ideas about how we could share information with you (or how you like to get information from school) as well as what kind of news and updates from school that you’d like – please let us know. Hello Families,

As I am sure you have noticed, the newsletter is now a weekly occurrence.

The Eagle Wire is issued to share so much information with our

Northwoods families. Sections vary issue to issue, but just a few things in

the publications include:

Usually, The Wire is issued online. This is useful as it is always filled with web links to

volunteer links, informative articles, flyers, event sign-ups, etc.… The online version is also

efficient as it saves paper, ink and time. As you can see, this is a paper issue. This publication

is being delivered to each Northwoods household. This, in the hopes to reach some of our

families that may have not explored the on-line issues. Hopefully, if this is the first Eagle Wire

you are reading, you will continue to read future publications on our school’s website. I send a

link each Friday through Skyward email.

If you have not been receiving Skyward messages from me at least once a week and have a

current email address, please update your information with the school office. If you do not

have access to email and would prefer a hard copy each week, there is a form on the last page

of this newsletter you can send back to school in your child’s blue folder.

Health Hints

Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. Influenza claims the lives of about 100 children in the US every year and hospitalizes approximately 20,000 children annually. The best way to protect your family from influenza (flu) is to get everyone in your household vaccinated. Influenza vaccination is especially important for people with compromised immune systems or certain underlying medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. Vaccines are safe and are subject to extensive testing in the US. Vaccination is the best way to prevent influenza. The influenza vaccine can reduce chances of getting the flu by 70 to 90 percent and, if someone gets vaccinated but still gets the flu, chances are they will get a less severe case.

Influenza Symptoms include: Fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue (tiredness). Some people may have vomiting/diarrhea (this is more common in children than adults). For more information:

child against the flu this season, many area pharmacies are still administering this vaccination.

Most are offering in-store coupon, and the shot itself is free with most insurance plans. Please

consider getting it done over the long break.

The 22nd Annual Christmas in the Northwoods is November 10th!

With the elimination of the Read-a-thon as a spring fundraiser, Christmas in the Northwoods is

our ONLY major fundraiser this year. All efforts are requested to make this an event that can

fund our PTO and all the extra we bring to the school (see author visit on the previous page).

There are still many opportunities for our Northwoods friends and family to help make this

fundraiser the success we know it can be.

Donations for the basket raffles are coming in, and the PTO elves are busy getting

everything ready for our big fundraiser in just a few weeks. It’s beginning to look a

lot like Christmas (in the Northwoods)! At least in my office it is, with the donations

that have been turned in. November 10th is so close you can almost taste it, but

not quite… The PTO is hoping there will be just a little more to “taste” on that day.

We are still in need of items to stock the bake sale booth.

Notes from Music:

Music Classroom

Kindergarten and First Grade. We work a lot on our singing voices in K & 1. Our goal is to get our singing voice on the bullseye (meaning we’re singing right on pitch). Each day, 2-4 students earn a singing award when they “hit the bullseye” with their singing voices. Watch for your child to bring one home! Second and Third Grade. We are studying the story & music of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”

1. This was originally written as a poem by German poet, Goethe, published in 1797. 2. French composer, Paul Dukas wrote a symphonic poem (music) for it 1897. 3. Became a book 4. A video popularized the classical music of Dukas. Disney’s released this in Fantasia in

1940. Fourth and Fifth Grade. We have been working on a Jazz arrangement of the poem “12345” on our Orff Instruments (Xylophones and Glockenspiels). They sound pretty cool! Here are some words your students should know (ask them).

Ostinato – A pattern that repeats over and over (used in 12345) Octave – 8 steps apart in the music alphabet (low A to high A, or low sol to high sol) Round – One group starts singing a song, & another groups comes in a few beats later. Walking Bass – Used a lot in jazz. Playing specific notes up and down the scale (within an octave) that sounds like someone is walking. Improvisation (Improv) – Making up music within guidelines (we do this in 12345)

Singing Eagles Fundraiser

We are starting a fundraiser for the chorus. If your child is not in the Singing Eagles, but you would be able to help us out by selling candy bars, please let Ms. Miller know (wmiller@ecasd.us).

More MAPE Messages

High Five from PhysEd

Think about SOARing high at home too! At the end of this newsletter, there is information on how students can track their PBIS behavior at home. Figure how daily exercise can be a part of being responsible and part of a team. Raking leaves, cleaning up trash outside and taking a family or friend’s pet for a walk are not only great ways to help out – they are all also fantastic forms of exercise. Get up, get out and get active!

Art Posts:

Hello! Here is Mrs. Hull's kindergarten class with their "The Dot" projects! In kindergarten we read the book, "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. They learned about a little girl, Vashti, that doesn't think she is good at drawing. Then she tries and makes a dot and it looks great! After that she has confidence and draws! Never give up and keep trying is the moral of the story.

Also, please know which day your child has art-A, B or C. The day is now noted on THE Wire calendar. Please do not dress them in their best clothes on art days, many times we are painting or doing other things that could get clothes messy. I do have denim aprons in the art room that are required for all painting or messy projects.

Coming soon… Starting November 8th we will offering Thursday after school art classes. The grades it is offered to changes by the month. We will be starting on November 8th with grades 4 and 5. It runs from after school until 5:00. Permission slips will be sent home through the classroom teacher for anyone interested. There is no fee for this class. Limit of 25 students. Mrs. Schaller

Acknowledging Positive Behaviors at Home

Northwoods Elementary is a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) school. We teach our students the following expectations:

Be Safe, Be A Team, Be Respectful, Be Responsible

Just as we will talk to the students about what those behaviors look like in the classroom, in the hallways, in the cafeteria, on the bus, in MAPE, and on the playground, you too can talk to them about what those behaviors look like at home. Here are some examples:

PBIS Expectations Home Examples

Safe Walk up and down stairs. Look both ways when crossing the street. Use eating utensils properly.

Outstanding Team Share and take turns with family members Use kind words to solve problems

Always Respectful Ask instead of demand. Say “please” and “thank you.” Look at adults when they are talking.

Responsible Clean up toys when finished playing. Do chores. Wash hands after using the bathroom

We will acknowledge students for displaying positive behaviors at school. You can use acknowledgments at home to help motivate your child to keep up the good work at school, or for exhibiting the expectations at home. This does not need to cost any money! Some suggestions for home rewards include the following:

• Read a story to your child or have your child read to you. • Stay up 15 minutes past bedtime. • Cook his or her favorite dinner. • Provide computer time at home or at the public library. • Play a board game or complete a puzzle together. • Watch his or her favorite movie. • Go for a walk outside together. • Color or draw with your child. • Send a positive note to your child’s teacher about the good job being done at home.

any student/family to be missing out on the information sent out, nor the

opportunities available for students. If you do NOT have regular access to
