Book LaunchThis Friday evening I will be launching my first book at Douglas Library. It has been a painstaking project over the last couple of years and chronicles my career as a photographer over the past 30 years. Trying to choose from all the thousands of images to go into the book was a nightmare and once I whittled it down to a few hundred, it then took another tough period of choosing to come up with the final choice. Crammed full of images from 3 decades, the book is called THOMPSON Through the Lens and covers the four chapters of my illustrious career. The book contains my personal insight into life as a photographer, beginning with my career in the Navy and being in charge of its Photographic Section, going on to be a Press Photographer and life in the fast lane as a motorcycle racing photojournalist, photography as an art form and my fun filled workshops. The book is dedicated to the memory of my friends Johnny Harrington, Leading Seaman Joe Smyth and Leading Seaman Mick Quinn and will be available from Saturday next at Douglas Book Shop at Douglas Village Shopping Centre and at our own offices at The Douglas Post Magazine.

BountyThe story of the HMS Bounty has been made famous in book and film, its voyages and mutiny locked in the annals of history. A replica of the famous ship visited Cork last weekend, drawing huge crowds to see the Man O War which has made appearances in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series. Called Bounty, the ship with its rigging and historic appeal, was a beautiful spectacle on the Cork skyline at high tide last Sunday evening.

The Unseen Eye Dear Editor, I read with interest your account of your trip to Kildare (Douglas Post 9th June). We drove to Donegal from Bantry in May on a Sunday. Nice quiet day for such a trip. We returned the following Sunday to Bantry, and we didn't see one Garda (in both directions) on the whole journey. Two weeks later, surprise, surprise!! A letter from An Garda Siochana with a photo of our number plate to tell us that on a Sunday morning at 10.30am we were spotted doing 106 km in a remote part of Sligo (the M15) between Cliffany and Grange. This involved a fine of 80Euro and 2 points on my licence! I'm 72 and hardly a road hog! 6km over the limit. I have never had an accident in my life and have never knowingly broken the law. Goes to show just because you don't see them, they see you!As you say the Cork to Dublin road is marvellous. Just be sure you don't need the loo or petrol, else you're banjaxed! We went Cork to Birr last week in 2 hours. I remember going with my Dad

in the sixties and it took all day. Progress is in progress. Is feidir linn!!Slan,Jody McGlincheyBantry

Hemingway Bell Tolls

Dear Editor In July 1961 Ernest Hemingway was found shot through the head by his own 12-bolt shotgun early this morning. His fourth wife Mary who was asleep upstairs at their home in Ketchum, Idaho, at the time, issued a statement saying that he was killed accidentally while cleaning the gun. He was in pyjamas and left no note. Hemingway, stylistically the most influential and most imitated writer of his time, would have been 62 in three weeks. His father, a doctor with a love of hunting which he passed on to his son, shot himself when he was 57, and this incident was used in some of Hemingway's stories. Neil O'DonoghueGreenhills Estate

White collar criminals must pay for their crimes like everyone elseCriminal Justice Bill will tackle white collar crime and make criminals paySpeaking on the Criminal Justice Bill in the Dáil, Fine Gael Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, welcomed the proposed legislation saying that if the faith of the Irish people is to be restored white collar criminals must be pursued for their crimes in the same way as everyone else. “There is a widespread view that those at the head of financial institutions are immune from prosecution; that they can flee the country to escape the consequences of their actions, and reap rewards for destroying the future of our children. “All of this at a time when those same financial institutions pursue ordinary citizens through the courts who, solely because they now find themselves unemployed, are struggling to repay their debts. “Over the last number of years we have been relayed with tales that paint our financial system as one that was completely unregulated and without any element of a social conscience; a system that rewarded reckless and irresponsible behaviour. If the trust of the people is to be restored, it is essential that those suspected of criminal activities in the financial sector are fully investigated and brought to justice. “I warmly welcome this proposed legislation which provides for increased investigative powers. As public representatives one of our duties is to ensure that the State’s legal procedures and processes are just and equitable. In proposing this Bill the Minister is actively fulfilling a commitment contained in the Programme for Government to ensure that the white collar criminal is held to account for his/ her crimes in the same way as everyone else. “This Bill, if enacted, will go a long way towards preventing a recurrence of the actions of bank executives, of which we are now painfully aware.”

Family Tieswith Geraldine Blake

For the last ten days, my two older sons have been away from home. The Eldest travelled with his school on a rugby tour and Middle son went to Irish College in Waterford. Youngest son stayed at home. He had mixed feelings about being the sole object of my attention: he loved the empty house but when I suggested we could go on little adventures together and stop in O’Brien’s for a treat, he shook his head and said, “No way!” I left him off. My sons' temporary absence gave me a foretaste of the Empty Nest Syndrome. At first I didn’t like the quiet house and almost felt lonely. You know those people who live near Heathrow and then can’t sleep without the noise of jumbo jets rattling their house, I found the peace unsettling. However, after a day or so I got used to the quiet and then found unexpected pleasures: I didn’t have to crank out a dinner

every night nor make four sets of lunches every morning; the pile in the laundry basket didn’t grow any bigger – Youngest Son takes recycling personally - food lasted longer, the house remained in the same state as the day before, no dumped bags in the hall, no trails of muck, rain and grass through the kitchen. The house became Zen-like in its simplicity and reading more attractive as I was not required to drive someone somewhere NOW. Youngest son slept in a different bed every night because he could. He had complete monopoly of the TV but was generous with it. He recommended Come Dine With Me saying, "You wouldn’t believe how mean these women are to each other!” We watched the final of the Cork edition together. I didn’t know the history of the five contestants: three women and two men. One man was a doormat – there’s always one in

every group, the second man was larger than life in every way; big rings, large head and a booming voice. He seemed like a good laugh and would have dominated the conversation only for the women verbally tearing lumps out of each other. I can’t remember their names but I will call the 52 year old brunette, Karen, the 25 year old brunette, Anne and young blonde, Simone. It was Simone’s turn to cook. In her kitchen she was marinating lamb chops. While kneading the chops

Absence makesinto a tepee shape she said, “I know Karen has a thing about lamb ever since her pet lamb was slaughtered when she was a child but that’s what’s cooking….” and broke off laughing in hysterics. For Anne the vegetarian, Simone was cooking a massive vegetable casserole that would have fed Croke Park on All Ireland Final day. It had twenty different kinds of vegetables, ready-chopped. She seemed lost as to what to do with them. First she sautéed them, then she mushed them, and then added more to it. Eventually she had no dish big enough to contain it. It was like the Magic Porridge Pot: it kept growing and growing. At the dinner table Karen sniffed the lamb with suspicion and shook her head in disbelief. Anne was not impressed with her main course even though Simone went to the trouble of serving it in a pretty, heart-shaped bowl. She gingerly prodded the mess with her fork and after putting it to her mouth said, ‘It’s disgusting’. They got past their prejudices and mid dinner, Karen said to Anne, ‘Isn’t it hypocritical of you

being a vegetarian?’ Anne looked surprised and clearing her throat said, ‘Do you even know what hypocritical means?’ I thought that was a fair question. ‘Are you calling me thick?’ said Karen. Loud man begged the two of them to calm down. Doormat said his appetite was ruined. To the camera after dinner, Karen, shaking with rage said, "For a 25 year old to talk to a 52 year like that is disgraceful. She doesn’t know her place." Who talks like that anymore? I didn’t know foodies were such divas. I was flabbergasted by their rudeness. After all, Ireland is a small place, Cork is even smaller, and on TV too. Middle son has just sent me a text saying ‘Will u be coming this weekend or something’. He must have run out of money. It reminds me of the story my dad used to tell us whenever we asked for our pocket-money. A boy sent his father telegram that read - No Mon, No Fun, Your Son. His father replied – Too Bad, So Sad, Your Dad. Absence from home makes little boys broke!

Open Garden Fund-Raiser for Building FundThe weather couldn’t have been more obliging on Sat. 28th May when the visitors to the Open Garden were numerous and generous. It was a wonderful day out, the atmosphere was very relaxed, people chatted as they drank their cuppas and enjoyed the home-made cakes and cookies, soaked up the sun, traded their knowledge about plants, and found a few ‘gems’ to spruce up their flower beds at the Plants Sale table. In the afternoon our musicians arrived, and Con, Tony, Liam and John from the Douglas Guitar Group played ballads and hits from the 60’s to the 80’s, from the Clancy’s to the Beatles, and the craic was mighty. The public were tremendous in their support and we at DCA are most grateful. Thanks to the many generous sponsors of our draw who include Douglas artists Valerie Jolly and Rick McGroarty, B&Q, Kenny O’Donovan of O’Donovan’s Off-Licence, and Kieran Coughlan of Cinnamon Cottage. Thanks to George O’Kelly at D&S Enterprises who provided us with all the signage ensuring there was no excuse for not being able to find us. Last Week’s Teazer. The parish clerk of a West Cork town

received a small parcel from Germany

addressed to Mr. Alfred White, she

checked the telephone directory but

could find no one listed under that

name. However, when she inquired at

the local pub she was told by some

of the town’s old timers that there

had been an Alfred White and that

after World War 2 , he had married

a German and settled in Frankfurt.

What was in the parcel ?

Last Week’s Answer.

Mr White was , or at least his ashes.

His last request was that his remains

be interred in the local cemetery. The

German authorities did not know who

to address the urn to and so came up

with a rather strange solution to their

dilemma.

This Week’s Teazer The little Scottish island of Moray

boasts the grandly titled “Bridge over

the Atlantic” (The locals gloss over

the fact that , at this point the Atlantic

is only a few feet wide). The bridge

is only single track and every morning

McLeod the postman drives his van

at breakneck speed over the bridge

and onto the island. However, every

morning the local milkman drives his

van at similar speed across the bridge

as he leaves the island.

Neither could ever bring himself to

give way, so why is there never an

accident ?

Phillip Eric Sobel of Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, is the author of this week’s well written and meaningful poem. Somehow Phillip got the impression that our Poetry Corner might be exclusively Irish orientated and was therefore a little apprehensive about forwarding a poem. Rest assured Phillip, poetry is poetry and good poetry like yours can have no known boundaries and is welcome in more places than the rest of us can dream about. Phillip is a writer, artist and private home tutor; a graduate of Cooper Union College / School of Art and a Life Member of The Art Students League of New York. And, is also a fan of Mary O ’Hara’s harp music! His poem “When Swallows Swooped” is dedicated to Moira & Michael Breen a fine, Irish couple who live in his neighborhood.Phillip tells us that the first line is also the title and this in poetic terms is called an “Incipit”. Now that is something for all of us to practice on. Thank you Phillip!

WHEN SWALLOWS SWOOPED

parallel to the lake,

with their tails aflutter

like ribbons from hats

worn by men of Brittany;

when birdnests and butterflies

were magical, frogs were friends;

and fern, in gracious groups,

welcomed us into a forest

visited by jewel-like salamanders;

when blue cornflowers

bloomed in straw fields

overseen by the sun

that warmed our hair;

those were joyous days,

but we did not know

it.Phillip Eric Sobel

EUROCHILD Anthology of Children’s Artwork & PoetryCapacity crowds are not common in the Cork City Council Chamber but that is what the Lord Mayor found waiting for him when he entered the room on Friday to the booming strains of the Scoil Cholmcille Brass Band.On one of his very last days in office, the Lord Mayor, Cllr Michael O’Connell, took some time out of a crammed schedule to attend a special ceremony in his honour hosted by the Cork-based European children’s project, Eurochild. Cork’s First Citizen was presented with the first copy of the 16th annual Eurochild Anthology of Children’s Artwork and Poetry before a City Council Chamber packed to the rafters with parents and children from all over Ireland. Doing the honours were Lucy Sheehan, a young artist from the Dyslexic Association of Ireland, and Aidan Murtagh, who made the trip all the way down from Emper in Co. Westmeath that morning to get his hands on a book that features new writing and artwork by him and many of his classmates.More of the best moments at this year’s Lord Mayor’s Presentation came courtesy of the 36 Eurochild poets selected from all over Ireland to read at the event. Guests Simon Coveney and Liz Meaney read some of their own favourites from the 2011 Anthology – Liz Meaney’s selection raising the blushes of the poem’s author, Martha Hegarty (Coláiste an Phiarsaigh, Glanmire), who hid with teenage blushes behind her delighted friends and teachers

watching from the balcony. Musical highlights included a master class in smooth from new singer-songwriter, Aengus Macabhaird; and a bracing rendition of ‘Eye of the Tiger’ and ‘Boys of Fairhill’ by the Scoil Cholmcille Brass Band for the Mayor of Fairhill.Since its inaugural anthology, ‘A Child’s Famine’, the Cork-based Eurochild Children’s Project has sustained its commitment to celebrating the original work of young creators throughout Ireland and the rest of Europe, on whatever subject they choose to explore, using the language or colour they prefer. Described this year by the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamon Gilmore, as ‘a springboard and inspiration for young people’, the multilingual, mother-tongue Eurochild Anthology of Artwork and Poetry represents an important record of the voices of children and young people from all over Europe.Parents, teachers and the newly published all made the trip to City Hall for the occasion, some just over the road from Mayfield and Douglas, but others from as far away as Westmeath, Longford, Galway, Tipperary and Kerry. Also present at this midsummer morning of balloons, brass bands, rock guitar, children and poetry were special guests and friends of Eurochild, Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine, Liz Meaney, Arts Officer Cork City Council, and the Longford poet and Poetry Ireland Writer in Schools, Mary Melvin Geoghegan.

Cllr Kieran McCarthy

Historical Walking Tours of Old Railway Line and Ballinlough Cllr. Kieran McCarthy will lead a historical walking tour of the Old Cork, Blackrock and Passage Railway line on Tuesday 5 July 2011. The walk starts at 7pm. at the entrance to the line on The Marina side adjacent the Main Drainage station. The Cork Blackrock and Passage Railway, which opened in 1850, was among the first of the suburban Cork railway projects. The walk will discuss the evolution of the line and also some of the historical sites which overlook it. Cllr. McCarthy will also lead a historical tour of Ballinlough on Wednesday 6 July 2011, starting at 7pm at Ballinlough Pitch and Putt car park, opp. Pairc Ui Rinn, Cork, duration: 1 ½ hours, finishing around Ballinlough Church. With 360 acres, Ballinlough is the second largest of the seven townlands forming the Mahon Peninsula. The area has a deep history dating back to Bronze Age Ireland. In fact it is probably the only urban area in the country to still have a standing stone still standing in it for over 5,000 years. The walk will highlight this heritage along with tales of landlords, big houses, rural life in nineteenth century Ballinlough and the evolution of its twentieth century suburban history. Cllr. McCarthy noted: “South east Cork City is full of historical gems; the walks are not only talks about the history of suburban sites but are also forums for people to talk about their own memories and knowledge of local history in the ward. All events are free and are open to all.

This week here in Douglas we are celebrating a very special occasion, the golden jubilee of the ordination to the priesthood of Fr Liam O' Regan. the gathering on Tuesday evening in the Rochestown park symbolised the affection the parishioner's of Douglas hold for Fr Liam. Fr Liam was born in Kinsale and ordained to the priesthood at the church of the holy spirit in Dennehy's cross on the 18/06/61. Fr Liam loved visiting older people on the first Friday with holy communion. Hay FeverHay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like signs and symptoms such as a runny nose, congestion, sneezing and sinus pressure. But unlike a cold, hay fever isn't caused by a virus. Hay fever is caused by an allergic response to outdoor or indoor allergens, such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander. Hay fever is common — it affects more than 1 in 5 people. Some people have symptoms year-round. For others, hay fever symptoms get worse at certain times of the year, usually in the spring, summer.Hay fever can make you miserable and affect your performance at work or school, and interfere with leisure activities. But you don't have to put up with annoying symptoms. Learning how to avoid triggers and finding the right treatment can make a big difference.SymptomsHay fever symptoms usually start immediately after you're exposed to a specific allergy-causing substance (allergen) and can include: Runny nose and nasal congestion, Watery

or itchy eyes, Sneezing, Cough, Itchy nose, roof of mouth or throat, Sinus pressure and facial pain, Swollen, blue-colored skin under the eyes (allergic shiners), Decreased sense of smell or taste.Your hay fever symptoms may start or worsen at a particular time of year, triggered by tree pollen, grasses or weeds, which all bloom at different times. If you're sensitive to indoor allergens, such as dust mites, cockroaches, mold or pet dander, you may have year-round symptoms. Many people have allergy symptoms all year long, but their symptoms get worse during certain times of the year.CausesDuring a process called sensitization, your immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless airborne substance as something harmful. Your immune system then starts producing antibodies to this harmless substance. The next time you come in contact with the substance, these antibodies recognize it and signal your immune system to release chemicals such as histamine into your bloodstream. These immune system chemicals cause a reaction that leads to the irritating signs and symptoms

of hay fever.Treatments and drugsThe best hay fever treatment is to avoid the substances that cause your reaction. However, this isn't always possible, and you may need additional treatments along with strategies to prevent exposure. If your hay fever isn't too severe, over-the-counter medications may be enough to ease your symptoms. For more bothersome symptoms, you may need to take prescription medications.Medications for hay fever include: Nasal corticosteroids, Antihistamines, Decongestants, Cromolyn sodium, Leukotriene modifier, Nasal ipratropium and Oral corticosteroids.Lifestyle and home remediesIt's not possible to completely avoid allergens, but you can reduce your symptoms by taking some steps to limit your exposure to them. It helps to know exactly what you're allergic to so that you can take steps to avoid your specific triggers.

Dog FoulingDog Fouling is very prevalent in Ballinlough, I was delighted that some new signs have been erected, the sign in South View is badly needed The signs clearly state that there is

a Fine of €150.00 for Fouling . Dog owners are taking their dogs for a walk early in the morning, that is when most of the fouling occurs. All dogs need to be exercised, but please bring a

plastic bag /poop scoop with you. In areas where there are schools, as children get out of cars, and walk straight in to dog poo, not a vary nice start to the day for any child.

From April 21, 2005, to May 26, 2006, he was the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, a position that once made him the highest-ranking military intelligence officer in the armed forces. In another conference tie-in, Hayden’s football coach in sixth through eighth grades was Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, who is the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland. Panelists will address how leaders can most effectively establish and employ intelligence practices to reduce uncertainty and enhance decision-making in a world marked

by intensifying globalization. Among the distinguished panelists are Julian King, the British Ambassador to Ireland; Phillip Mudd, former Executive Assistant Director of the FBI’s National Security Branch; Sean Aylward, Secretary General, Irish Department of Justice, Equality and Law; and Kathleen O’Toole, Chief Inspector of the Garda Síochána Inspectorate and the first female Police Commissioner of Boston, Mass. In addition to the three-day forum, MCIIS will offer two applied intelligence training workshops on July 14 and 15, one for managers and the other for analysts. MERCEDES-BENZ PREPARES FOR NEW ACTROS INTRODUCTION

Mercedes-Benz is preparing the way for the introduction of their new long-distance Actros truck. Set to build on the success of its best-selling predecessor – a truck voted winner of the international Truck of the Year award – first versions of the new Actros will go on sale in Europe in the second half of this year and arrive in Ireland in early 2012. Equipped with fuel-saving, low-emissions BlueEFFICIENCY power, the new Actros promises greater profitability, dynamism and comfort in a completely new package. Features will include totally new cabs in a striking, yet typically Mercedes-Benz design, with aerodynamic refinements, an innovative lighting concept and external dimensions that confirm the spaciousness of the working, living and resting space provided for the driver.

The new Actros will be powered by a new generation of Mercedes-Benz engines, available initially in four power output classes from 310 kW to 375 kW, with maximum torque from 2100 Nm to 2500 Nm.

Ultra-modern technology fitted in the new Actros will include the unique X-Pulse injection system, exhaust gas recirculation, exhaust after-treatment using BlueTec diesel technology and a particulate filter.

In the course of its seven years development, the new Mercedes-Benz Actros has been subjected to rigorous testing designed to uphold the Mercedes-Benz ‘trucks you can trust’ claim. Trials ranged from practical every-day road tests to the heat of the Sierra Nevada and winter tests on the Arctic Circle. Photo Taking the wrapping off the new Mercedes-Benz Actros truck full details of which will be published in early July. The new Actros goes on sale here in right hand drive versions early next year.

Gardening - Things to do This WeekAs usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower garden Deadhead roses regularly, except those producing hips, and give a mid-summer feed of rose fertiliser. Tie in dahlia stems as they develop, and thin to 4-5 for extra large blooms. Cut down aquilegias and sweet rocket after flowering to prevent lavish self-seeding. Prune evergreen ceanothus after flowering, cutting back almost to the main branches. Take cuttings of osteospermums and Verbena rigida (V. venosa), both vulnerable to frost and damp later on.

Kitchen Garden Make a last sowing of peas and dwarf French beans for late crops. Protect cauliflowers from bight sunlight by breaking 2-3 leaves over the curds. Sow maincrop turnips for storing. Tuck straw under bush tomatoes and cucumbers to keep fruits clean. As crops are cleared, transplant brassicas to limed positions, and water in well. Sow savoy cabbages in a shaded nursery bed for late winter supplies. Start using the largest self-blanching celery heads; earth or paper up traditional trench kinds. Sow

chervil in a slightly shaded bed, in case plants bolt suddenly in hot weather. Sow a fast beetroot variety for baby beets in October.

Lawns & Hedges Mow lawns twice a week if necessary for a fine finish. Trim privet hedges regularly to maintain a neat outline.

Green House Check greenhouse plants for watering daily all this month, and damp down regularly.

Water Garden In warm weather inspect fish regularly for early signs of diseases.

In General After summer showers / storms, check for scorched shoots, signs of fireblight, on Rosaceae shrubs such as pears, pyracantha and cotoneaster

Marc O'Reilly has been confirmed for Indiependence. The singer/songwriter, who performed at last weekend's Body and Soul festival, will take to the stage in Mitchelstown at the festival taking place at the end of July. O'Reilly recently released a live video for his song F.O.O. O'Reilly divides his time between France and Waterford and has been compared to the likes of Ray LaMontagne and Gomez. The singer has only been performing solo since 2010 after stints in various alt/rock bands, so his appearances at Body and Soul and Indiependence mark something of a breakthrough for the troubadour. O'Reilly's debut album My Friend Marx was released in January of this year.

Jackass' Star Ryan Dunn has died in a car crash, the 34 year old actor and stunt-man started his career doing crazy stunts and skateboard tricks in a series of online videos, which eventually led to his part in the show.He was a key member of the crew, appearing in other shows like Viva La Bam and Bam's Unholy Union, as Bam's sidekick and friend. He appeared in all three Jackass flicks and even was in the Jessica Simpson film 'Blonde Ambition'. Amy Winehouse was booed by fans in Belgrade, reports say the star appeared to be “too drunk to perform” and “mumbled her way through parts of songs” at the open-air concert in the city’s sixth-century Kalemegdan fortress.

us, her fans, remember the real Amy,” one concert-goer said.It was the first date on Amy’s European tour, which also includes shows in Spain, Switzerland and Italy. Her Turkey and Greece gigs have been cancelled since. The Love Is A Losing Game star recently completed a week-long

Apple have filed a patent for the intended update, which will be able to determine if it's being used to record the copyrighted material and disable it's recording capabilities, however the phone's other functions would remain operational. While this new technology would likely be unpopular with iPhone users!!

Not only that, but she was reportedly an hour late to the stage and at one point threw her microphone on the floor. She also twice walked off stage, leaving her band to carry on without her. A large number of the 20,000-strong crowd began

booing the star when it became obvious she was not capable of performing. Afterwards fans spoke to reporters of their anger. "I paid my weekly salary, 38 euros, for this concert and I knew of her troubles, but the organisers should have cancelled it to let

ManagerThe question of the outside manager be it Club or County has once again entered the arena. The number of outside managers to win the ultimate prize (an all-Ireland football title) is two, John O’Mahony with Galway and in 1982 Eugene McGee with Offaly. That said there were a number of provincial successes as well as those who have brought counties on a tonne. In football Mick O’Dwyer had provincial success with Kildare and Laois. The same Maestro, Micko helped Wicklow. Hurling saw Waterford gain provincial championship and league success under Justin McCarthy. John Meyler guided Kerry hurlers to success in the Christy Ring Trophy and retention of Division 2 status. Clare footballers had provincial success under John Maughan, as did Leitrim under John O’Mahony. Gerald McCarthy was responsible for great strides in Waterford Hurling. There are many more who have had disastrous innings on the intercounty management merry-go-round. Most players nowadays are far more knowledgeable in the ways and means of sport and know what they want. Their first requirement is a physical trainer who knows his stuff. Physical training at club level must have an end product. In the past, particularly in the club scene anyone could take on the position of trainer. Similarly coaches need to be doing drills that are going to keep the players on their toes. Variety is hugely important; should the coach stick to the same

old hum-drum routines it will quickly lead to boredom among the players and he will lose the respect that a coach must command. Of course the players calling the shots is a major no-no. The coach has to be in charge. At the same time he doesn’t have to be dictatorial. Whilst he may be open to some players’ views the coach, at the end of the day should decide the way he wants the game played.Outside managers can come into clubs and take a gung ho approach on the way they want to instill their mindset in their new charges. On the opposite side of the coin are the players who are the stars of the club, are in a comfort zone and do not want to be awakened from their slumber. It must be about moving on and refusing to settle for what has been achieved. Strictly speaking it is about respect and each one learning from the other. The appointment of an outside club manager needs to be looked at very carefully. To get the best available candidate the club needs to be addressing the issue in August/September, as later in the year the choice is limited. Of course the major issue will be money. Can the club afford to bring in an outside manager? The world and its mother know that such managers receive payment, even though it is against the ethos of the G.A.A. Some have described these paid imports as mercenaries. They are in it strictly for the money. The club will choose the outsider because the feeling is that those from within the club will not be listened to.

In the case of the dual club the outsider needs to work closely with his opposite number, be it football or hurling. On the part of the players, unless the commitment and mindset is right it will not matter who the manager is. There has to be a great willingness to learn and to take on board ideas that they may not at all times agree with.

Limerick vs. WaterfordThe first 34 minutes of this game was poor and certainly not helped by the falling rain coupled with the underfoot conditions. Limerick stepped up a gear and rallied before the break. The Shannonsiders commitment, mindset and skills level came very much to the fore in the second half. They are coached by former Cork coach Donal O’Grady who has brought the Cork

style of the running game to the team. A style that involves lots of support play. Kevin Downes was a revelation at full forward, shooting two goals. This man is very similar in style to former Limerick full forward Joe McKenna. They were caught in the finish by a last minute Mullane goal. This was a cruel finish for Limerick as Waterford got out of jail. O’Grady is undoubtedly doing a good job here. One would have expected the Decies to be a step above Limerick but Davy Fitz will be concerned at the ease with which Limerick got the goals. In the Munster final they will have to compete with the challenge of Corbett, McGrath, Callanan and Eoin Kelly. I fear for them in this respect. Tipperary will win the Munster final.

INDIEPENDENCE returns to Mitchelstown this summer with a bigger and better line-up, excellent new on-site facilities and some brilliant new features including boutique camping and a comedy programme.

In keeping with previous years, Indiependence again combines some of the best and freshest Irish music talent with some fantastic international headliners .

This year, the festival wel-comes Editors. With third al-bum, ‘In This Light And On This Evening’, Editors have jour-neyed into a new sonic land-scape. Already hugely success-ful globally with debut album ‘The Back Room’ propelling the band directly into the big

leagues, climbing to Number 2 in the UK album charts and spawning hit singles, ‘Munich’, ‘Bullets’ and ‘Blood’, their follow up ‘An End Has A Start’ secured

the four a debut at Number One in the UK album charts and a string of Top 20 placings across Europe.

Altogether some 80 artists will play at Indiependence. As well as Editors, this year will see the likes of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Therapy?, The Coronas, Whipping Boy and Gemma Hayes across 4 stages over the weekend.

In a new venture, comedy heats have been taking place across the country with the win-ners set to perform in the new comedy tent at the festival. An-drew Stanley and Damo Clark will MC proceedings. Other comics playing include Fred Cooke and Joe Rooney.

There will be new chill out areas, a new cinema tent and a special DJ area. Delicious wild boar and venison stew will be served at a new on-site dining tent, complimented by fully-li-censed bars sponsored Bavaria and Havana Club the Authentic Cuban Rum.
