Isn’t this weather just fantastic?our cover this week sums it up perfectly – definitely ice cream weather.

It’s the end of season for many sports and I would like to congratulate all of the local clubs who have won silverware and especially all those young people involved in sport who have achieved and who continue to achieve their goals. Staying on a sporting note, I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from Pat Connolly of Fr. Mathew’s Basketball club informing me that I was the recipient of their Media Award for 2009/2010. Coming from a sports background and being a sports editor first and foremost, this award was all the sweeter for the reason that I grew up in the shadow of ‘the Parochial Hall’ which was the home of Cork basketball and I have played and coached the game I love for most of my life until I retired as a coach a few years back. I mentioned this in the few words I spoke on receiving the award at the club’s annual awards ceremony last weekend and I would also like to reiterate that as the last coach at Douglas Basketball club in the late 90s it was frustrating, like it was for many other clubs, to try and hold onto their talented players who would, for the most part, cross over the Lee to the Northside and the stronghold of Neptune and Demons. This made it almost impossible for southside and county clubs to compete against the strength of the ‘Big 2’. Now recognised as the fastest growing club in Munster, Fr. Mathews is quickly changing the trends of Cork basketball with a team of recognised and respected coaches together with over 200 players of all ages – girls and boys – who are proving that this club is going places and with the energy, silverware and talent I witnessed at the clubs awards ceremony last Sunday – Fr. Mathew’s Basketball Club is a name that will be a household name the length and breadth of Ireland. Already they have won National titles, County titles and have players on the Cork and Irish squads at their respective age level.I feel and said at the awards ceremony last weekend, that it’s only a matter of time before players from the Northside will be coming across the Lee to want to join Fr. Mathew’s Basketball Club.

The launch of Sex and the City 2 the movie is creating quite a stir and at John O’Sullivan’s Bar is offering those who produce their cinema ticket, a Cosmopolitan cocktail free (one per customer) as part of their current Cosmo – Sex an the City promotion.

As I have two boys about to sit Junior and Leaving cert exams I would like to offer my best wishes to all students facing these most important of tests.

CORK GIRLS WONT BENEFIT FROM CERVICAL CANCER ROLL-OUT A high number of young girls in Cork city won’t benefit from the roll-out of the cervical cancer vaccine as the schools allocated the vaccine are not in Cork city.The roll-out has received wide publicity in the past number of weeks but it is important to clarify that it is not going straight into all schools but is being rolled-out on a pilot scheme to 21 schools spread throughout the country and only girls who are now in sixth class or 1st year will be getting it. The vaccine will be given in three different doses, one this month, one in July and one in November. So, girls in second year next year will be receiving the vaccine but girls who are finishing second year this summer will not be eligible. The programme will be rolled out in full this September for all first years throughout the country. For the past number of years there has been a growing rate of 1.5% of cases of cervical cancer in this country. In real terms that means of the 180 women currently diagnosed in Ireland every year, 77 will die.This vaccine will save lives and it will send a signal to the world that we in Ireland value the lives of our daughters and make their health a priority. It’s a pity however, that many young girls will be missing out on this vaccine by only a couple of months.For the girls who are not eligible for the vaccine free of charge, the Government has decided that they will have to pay for it privately. So therefore those who can afford to give their daughters the vaccine can get it while the daughters of those who cannot afford to will have to take their chances and hope they don’t fall victim to the cancer in the future.

Dear Editor, Douglas Community and Development Group, who have been increasingly pro-active in creating greater amenities for the people of Douglas and surrounding areas, are requesting that Cork City Council re-opens the existing walkway adjacent to the Gael Scoil in Douglas, which has been closed for the past 3 years, to allow the people of Douglas to gain access to the former landfill site from the City side. As Chairman of the Douglas Community and Development Group, I am willing to offer the use of this walkway which runs through my land as this is a much needed amenity for the people of Douglas. Currently there is very little available to the people in Douglas who wish to walk, jog or just enjoy the fresh air, and the proposed walkway would be a very welcome facility and asset to the people of Douglas, Grange,

Lane, Cork. I’m writing today to bring to people’s attention the do fouling around our school. Many of the junior students are stepping in the dog faeces or dragging their bags through it. This is very unhygienic.I request the dog owners would take responsibility for their dog’s waste. This isn’t difficult as there are many devices to assist cleaning up after your dog. I know this because I’m a dog owner myself.

However since there are people who won’t do this voluntarily, I feel strongly that fines for dog fouling should be increased. Oh to be in Cork now that summer is here

I was babysitting my dad for the weekend as my mum went to London for my brother’s daughter’s communion and was prepared for a sedate two days. My father only watches RTE so I was obliged to watch the Late Late which I feel hasn’t been same since Gaybo retired. I thought David Kelly with his gentle humour and dapper dress at age 81 was a gold mine of stories to be followed by the most wanted man in Ireland, Tommy Bowe. Most sport personalities have no personality but his easy manner and ready smile made my heart melt.

My parents have a lovely garden which I was quite content to sit in but my son had a match in Cobh so we dragged ourselves along. We got lost several times and tempers were deteriorating rapidly as we got more hot and bothered trapped inside an airless car when suddenly we came across the pitch perched on a hillside overlooking the sea on a glorious Saturday morning. On Sunday, my sister had a fit to go swimming so we sat under an apple tree in the Anglers Rest for lunch and afterwards, we left my dad in the shade with his Sunday papers to find a place to swim. We crossed the road, cut through the car park and entered a field snowing with dandelion seeds and followed the track to find a river bank full of travellers with their horses and dogs. My first instinct was to run but my sister was completely unfazed. She flapped out her towel on the stones where we sat demurely and watched the antics of Francie dragging his horse into the river ‘for a swim’, while his friends oblivious to the freezing water dived into the river terrifying the fish with their belly flops. The dogs were no bigger than rats and were resigned to being picked up by tiny toddlers and flung into the water. There was a four day old foal that looked a dog with an oversized head that was obviously adored. Everybody seemed to be called Francie; there was lots of good natured slagging and they didn’t mind the audience. I could have sat there all day. We then went to Fountainstown which was mobbed with half of Cork down there already. The tide was well in and everybody was forced to sit on the stones. Because of my freckly

skin I fry in the sun and slathered sunblock in all my sensitive areas but forgot my right arm which was exposed to sun while driving. Today I have one pink arm which looks like an undercooked sausage but that’s an Irish summer for you - lobster skin: we rush out to greet the sun because we never know when it will be back again.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Dara Murphy, patron of Irish Guide Dogs for •the Blind, paid a courtesy visit to their National Headquarters and Training Centre in Model Farm Road, Cork earlier today. Accompanied by the Lady Mayoress, Tanya Murphy, they enjoyed a tour of the newly refurbished premises and spent some time conversing with staff and meeting a number of guide and assistance dogs-in-training. The Mayor also undertook a blindfolded walk with a guide dog and described the experience as enlightening. Pfizer job losses will have major impact on Ringaskiddy/ Shanbally areaSpeaking following the announcement that pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is to shed close to 800 jobs in Ireland, closing two plants at Ringaskiddy, Fine Gael local Senator Jerry Buttimer said the move will have a devastating impact on the area which has been beset by a raft of big corporation closures in the last 24 months. “The closure of two Pfizer plans at Ringaskiddy will have a major impact on Cork which has, since May 2008, seen companies such as Motorola, Hormann Electronics, Smurfit and Odlums either scale back operations or pack up altogether.“In August 2008 the Pfizer plant in Little Island was also shedding staff and at that time I called for the establishment of a Government taskforce to get a handle on the situation and determine why so many jobs were being lost in Cork. “It is tragic to hear of any job losses but coming so deep into a recession is extremely difficult to take. This is an extraordinarily sad day for the Cork workers of Pfizer and their families. The heartbreak of this announcement is compounded by the fact that it will affect so many young people who have mortgaged themselves up to the hilt to buy houses they couldn’t afford that they are now struggling to keep.“Job losses of this nature are also a real cause for concern as they are the sort of high-value jobs that we should be attracting to Ireland. This Government has been so focused on cosying up to the banks and balancing the books that it has completely refused to address the jobs crisis despite umpteen warnings from Fine Gael. It is as plain as the nose on Brian Cowen’s face that unless we stem the flow of joblessness we will never get the country back on track. “With 44,702 people now recorded on the Live Register in Cork, the need to lock-down alternative employment, to give people hope in the future, is even more pressing than ever. This Government must stop ignoring our continually sliding competitiveness and set about adopting the myriad Fine Gael proposals which can steer us to calmer waters today. Better still they should step aside and allow the Party with the plan and the team to step into action while we still have some Cork jobs to save.”

DOUGLAS COMMUNITY AS-SOCIATION News(With Helen Fox PRO)Screen on Ballybrack Stream.The stream running along the west boundary of the Community Park will need to have a screen installed before it goes into the culvert section that runs under Church Street and the Douglas Shopping Centre. This is necessary to trap trash which could otherwise build up and cause flooding. After due planning process, C.C.C. have required that this work be done, and plan to carry out the proposed work themselves.From time to time, council maintenance staff will need to clear the debris. To allow this work to be undertaken, it will be necessary to cordon off a section of the park at the Church Street end.

Douglas Community Assoc. has been in contact with interested parties and have made a submission to C.C.C. with a view to minimising the effect of proposed work.

Lifetime’s PassionFor Care of the Elderly rewarded

A surprise presentation, of a Cork Person of the Month award, was made to Paddy O’Brien on the stage of the City Hall this week.Brian Crowley MEP presented Paddy with the award, during the final of the Over 60’s Show, to mark his lifetime’s work in caring for the elderly of Cork.Paddy’s work as a voluntary social worker began, back in 1953, when he took a summer ‘messenger boy’ job as a 14 year old youth, and came across extreme poverty in inner city areas. He began running ‘messages’ for these elderly people and later started organising social events. At the time there was no community organisations or other support services, so Paddy became the voice of the elderly in Cork. Over the past six decades he has led many campaigns for the elderly, including subsidised heating, access to medical care, housing, financial help, social welfare entitlements, government prioritization, costs of nursing home care and loneliness.“Loneliness is still a huge problem amongst the elderly and that is one reason why I continue to run the Over 60’s Show in communities all over the city and county, for the past thirty four years” said Paddy O’Brien this week.“Paddy O’Brien has made it uncomfortable for local and national politicians all his life, and his great skill was in keeping the needs of the elderly and the poor on the public agenda. For that alone he deserves this award recognition and thanks” said Brian Crowley MEP at the award presentation.“Loneliness is a disease, and I appeal to individuals and organisations to keep in touch with elderly people, be they your own family, friends or neighbours. That is my central message all my life, and we still need improvements in this area” added Mr. O’Brien.Paddy has now retired as Regional Manager of the Heart Foundation, after 20 years service, but is still involved in promoting the healthy lifestyle message throughout the region.

Law ViewIt is surprising the high proportion of people who die every year without having made a will, or intestate, to use the legal term. When I suggest to a client that they should make a will, I am often told, “But if I die, my wife will get everything – which is what I want anyway”. Well, this is simply not the case. If you die intestate and leave a spouse and children, the law provides that your spouse will only take two thirds of your assets, and the other third will be divided up between all the children – no matter what their circumstances or ages. One solution is to transfer the family home and other property into the joint names of both spouses. However there are usually assets that remain in one spouse’s name, for example inherited and business property. And when one spouse dies, the surviving spouse will have to consider who will inherit the assets when they die.Wills are not only about gifts of assets. They are also used to appoint executors, and legal guardians of children. Wills can also be used to establish trusts to benefit minor or disabled children. And very importantly, wills can be used to minimise taxes.Disputes often arise – especially when the will is poorly drafted or vague. The most common dispute between the children is over the sale of the family home. Often one or more children will refuse to sell the home in which they grew up. There are often bitter arguments over items of sentimental value. Another frequent dispute concerns children who believe that the division of assets is unfair. The disappointed child can challenge the will in court by alleging that the parent failed in his moral duty to provide for the child, or by arguing that the will itself was not validly made. These cases are difficult for all concerned, due to the hurt caused, and the high costs incurred.Most of these problems can be avoided by having a will drawn up by your solicitor, after spending time not only contemplating your personal wishes, but considering what is best for all your family.

Voting facilities for vision impairedEnvironment Minister John Gormley must make adequate provision for voters who are blind or vision impaired so that they can vote independently and in secret at the next general election.Although the constitution states that that voting is done by secret ballot with each voter having only one vote, people who are blind or vision impaired are being denied this right, which means that for thousands of people voting remains inaccessible. Currently, a person who is blind or vision impaired is forced, either to bring along a “trusted friend” or to request the assistance of a returning officer, to fill in the ballot paper when they go along to cast their vote.This is simply unacceptable, because everybody, regardless of what disability they may have, has the right to cast their vote in secret.There are a number of solutions that would address this problem, many of which are already in place in other jurisdictions around the world.Tactile templates, featuring Braille and large print are already in use in places like the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the USA.Solutions based on such a system need not be expensive to implement and I believe they should be put in place in time for the next general election.I will be raising this with the Environment Minister John Gormley in the Dail at Minister’s Question Time this week, and will be pressing him for a commitment to address this problem as a matter of urgency.

Pianist Hugh Tinney celebrates Chopin's Bicentenary in BantryCelebrating the Bicentenary of the birth of Chopin, Hugh Tinney will be performing a special Chopin concert in Bantry House on Saturday 5 June at 8pm.Hugh Tinney returns to Bantry a few weeks later for this summer's West Cork Chamber Music Festival which takes place from 25 June to 3 July in Bantry. From 2000 to 2006 Hugh Tinney was Artistic Director of the Music Festival in Great Irish Houses. He teaches at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and has been a jury member at several international piano competitions. He was awarded a two-year bursary by the Arts

Council of Ireland to research, perform and record Irish and international contemporary piano music during 2006 and 2007.

Dara Murphy welcomed the members, he praised all the voluntary work that the members were undertaking, and also mentioned the seven excellent Councillors that we have in the South East Ward, he mentioned in particular that he was delighted that the Ballinlough Community Association had decided to enter the 'Over 60's Competition again, after a number of years. He talked about the excellent work that the Meals on Wheels undertake each day. He stressed the importance of voluntary workers in the Community. The attendance included Chairperson Cllr. Laura McGonigle, Cllr. Terry Shannon, former Lord Mayor Donal Counihan, Officers & committee members. A

The Final of the Over 60's took place in the City Hall last Sunday night.Out contestant Paddy Crowley was one of the Final fourteen. Two weeks ago after his accident, no one thought Paddy would be able to take part, but our Paddy was determined that he would sing in the Final. He was collected by the Lord Mayor's Car, family friends & neighbours gathered to see 'Paddy off' for his big night. Seventy supporters were in the City Hall to cheer Paddy on, he gave his beautiful rendering of 'A Bunch of Violets Blue'

Funding for Cork Sustainable Travel Initiatives Cork South Central T.D. Michael McGrath has welcomed the allocation of €215,000 for three Sustainable Travel initiatives in Cork City. The funding is made available under the Department of Transport’s Smarter Travel Project Fund. Funding is being provided for three city wide colour walking trails. One walk per year for each of the next three years will be developed.“The allocation of €150,000 for three city centre walking trails is most welcome, and will enable the City Council to develop three separate walking routes in the city as an attractive tourist amenity. Cork City has so many interesting sites to see, and this project will allow the Council to include them on designated walking routes which will be accessible to everyone irrespective of their mobility needs,” according to Deputy McGrath.Funding is also being provided for a campus bike project in UCC allowing members of staff in UCC with easy access to a fleet of rental bicycles for travel between campus locations and places within the city during the day. In addition, funding is allocated towards the implementation of the proposed 30KM/PH speed zone on the island in Cork City.“The allocation of this funding will help to deliver innovative sustainable travel projects in Cork City and forms part of an overall €15 million fund for various projects over 5 years,” concluded Deputy McGrath.

Senator David Norris Senator David Norris addressed a capacity audience at the Cobh and

Harbour Chamber Annual Dinner in the Commodore Hotel, Cobh.

A dynamic and experienced orator, Senator Norris entertained those

present with his colourful eloquence and the deep sense of humanitarian

responsibility which came across in his address. He also spoke of his

delight at being in Cobh and of the warm welcome which he received.

President, Michael Martin stated "Senator Norris was an excellent

speaker and the Cobh & Harbour Chamber were priveleged to have a

speaker of his calibre for our Annual Dinner.

The Annual Dinner also featured the ConocoPhillips Business of

Year Award. Michael King, Commercial Development Manager of

ConocoPhillips stated "The company which were nominated for the

2010 award were established in 1869 and have been providing a first

class service for over 140 years. Employing over 350 staff nationwide

this year’s recipient is McKechnies Cleaning Services Ltd". He presented

the award to an elated Edel O’Connell, Businesss Development Director

of McKechnies. "We are honoured to receive the award" she stated

The Lough – Water Quality ReportI recently received a report from the Recreation, Amenity and Culture directorate of City Council on the water quality of The Lough.City Council is continuing to monitor water quality at the Lough, taking daily readings from 10 different sample points, measuring dissolved oxygen levels, acidity and water temperatures. Readings are satisfactory at present.As detailed in previous reports there are too many fish in the lake, the amount of fish impacting negatively on water quality. In the past month, in consultation with the Marine Institute, the Cen-tral Fisheries Boards, the South West Regional Fisheries Board and Cork Carp Anglers Association, a number of carp fry have been removed from the lake. The fry are currently being tested under controlled conditions for KHV. If the Department of the Marine are satisfied that the fry are KHV free, it is the intention to remove a number of carp over the next two seasons, and transfer them to other fisheries.Barley straw is being placed this week in special netting around the perimeter of the island at the lake. The decay product of barley straw assists with the suppression of algae bloom. The straw is po-sitioned near the surface of the water to maximize its benefit.The co-operation of the public in not feeding bread to birds at the Lough is still vitally important as this practice contributed in a major way to the poor water quality.Mobile water pumps will be used during summer months at the lake to aerate the water, if required, the pumps proving very effec-tive last year during periods of low oxygen.The Council will continue its monitoring programme and explore other measures to lower phosphorus levels at the lake.

This week seven Youthreach students travelled to Tipperary to complete their Gaisce Bronze Award. For two tough days they hikes the Galtee mountains. They stayed in a 200 year-old, An Óige owned, hunting lodge.The students found it a struggle with the changing weather conditions and the long distances that had to be covered. All seven students completed the challenge. The protest in Cork tomorrow over threatened cuts to the old age pension will leave the government know just how angry old age pensioners are, having survived a harsh winter where amost of their pensions went on fuel to keep warm. Many people ran up bills just to have the bare essentials, food and heat. These are the people who worked all their lives, surely they are entitled to live out their lives without having the worry of their security and independence taken from them.The over 60s Talent Competition is over for another year all 14 contestants preformed so well, but there can be only one winner representing Togher Billy Horgan with his rendition of “My Way”. The Computer classes for beginners which transition year boys from Douglas Community School have just finished until September. Thank you boys for your patience and kindness to our older people you have made a big difference in their lives. I’m sure you are a lot wiser having this interaction with our older people, none of this would have happened without the commitment from principle Jim Long, last but not least to teacher Aileen Goulding who each week organised these classes and always kind words and encouragement for those who believed computers were only for the young.Have a good summer you deserve the break. Hay feverHay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like signs and symptoms such as a runny nose, congestion, sneezing and sinus pressure. But unlike a cold, hay fever isn't caused by a virus. Hay fever is caused by an allergic response to outdoor or indoor allergens, such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander. Hay fever is common — it affects more than 1 in 5 people. Some people have symptoms year-round. For others, hay fever symptoms get worse at certain times of the year, usually in the spring, summer.Hay fever can make you miserable and affect your performance at work or school, and interfere with leisure activities. But you don't have to put up with annoying symptoms. Learning how to avoid triggers and

finding the right treatment can make a big difference.

SymptomsHay fever symptoms usually start immediately after you're exposed to a specific allergy-causing substance (allergen) and can include: Runny nose and nasal congestion, Watery or itchy eyes, Sneezing, Cough, Itchy nose, roof of mouth or throat, Sinus pressure and facial pain, Swollen, blue-colored skin under the eyes (allergic shiners), Decreased sense of smell or taste.Your hay fever symptoms may start or worsen at a particular time of year, triggered by tree pollen, grasses or weeds, which all bloom at different times. If you're sensitive to indoor allergens, such as dust mites, cockroaches, mold or pet dander, you may have year-round symptoms. Many people have allergy symptoms

all year long, but their symptoms get worse during certain times of the year.

CausesDuring a process called sensitization, your immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless airborne substance as something harmful. Your immune system then starts producing antibodies to this harmless substance. The next time you come in contact with the substance, these antibodies recognize it and signal your immune system to release chemicals such as histamine into your bloodstream. These immune system chemicals cause a reaction that leads to the irritating signs and symptoms of hay fever.

Treatments and drugsThe best hay fever treatment is to avoid the substances that cause your reaction. However, this isn't always possible, and you may need additional

treatments along with strategies to prevent exposure.If your hay fever isn't too severe, over-the-counter medications may be enough to ease your symptoms. For more bothersome symptoms, you may need to take prescription medications.Medications for hay fever include: Nasal corticosteroids, Antihistamines, Decongestants, Cromolyn sodium, Leukotriene modifier, Nasal ipratropium and Oral corticosteroids.Lifestyle and home remediesIt's not possible to completely avoid allergens, but you can reduce your symptoms by taking some steps to limit your exposure to them. Is It A Slipped Disc?Through the years I’ve had many people ask me if I thought they had a ‘slipped disc’ in their spine. And although this is a very common term used to describe a painful spinal condition, discs cannot actually slip. To explain what I mean, let’s start with some basic information about the disc. Spinal discs are protective shock-absorbing pads between the bones of the spine. The outer part of the disc is made up of concentric rings surrounding the hard center part which is actually a gel. If there is a subluxation (mis-alignment) in the spine, the discs don’t stay properly hydrated and cracks can appear in the outer rings of the disc. This can eventually cause the outer portion of the disc to fail, allowing the gel to push outward (bulging disc) or escape into the surrounding tissue (ruptured, or herniated disc). The leaking gel substance can place pressure on the spinal cord or on a single nerve fiber and cause symptoms of pain either around the damaged disk or anywhere along the pathway controlled by that nerve. The layman's term ‘slipped disc’ is, therefore, a misnomer and actually refers to a condition whereby portions of an abnormal, injured, or degenerated disc have pro-truded against nerve tissues. In the past, it was believed that once somebody developed a herniated disc, surgery was the only option. However, recent research with MRI and CT outcome studies have documented that this isn’t always the case. Herni-ated discs in the cervical and lumbar spine have been shown to not only reduce in size after a period of conservative chiropractic care, but in many cases regress and disappear completely upon reimaging. It is important to remember that discs will stay healthy for a lifetime if the spine is properly maintained through exercise, healthy lifestyle habits and chiropractic care to re-align any misaligned vertebra.

Hi Dr. Cronin, Nine years ago my father was diagnosed with lung cancer due to smoking. He had been warned by his doctor to quit on numerous occasions a few years previous to contracting the disease but unfortunately he never acted on the advice or maybe he just couldn’t quit, but the heartbreak and void that was left in our lives since he died has been almost unbearable. We all pleaded with him to quit but he never did, and even though the cigarettes had caused so much damage to his health, his life and our lives, he continued to smoke up until the very last day. I remember driving him to the hospital for treatment and he’d insist on smoking in the car. There were even times when he refused point blank to go in for treatment so I’d have to turn the car around to bring him home, while he smoked all the way back. I don’t think any of us have fully recovered from the way he died and at such a young age, and to think that if he had never smoked he would still be with us today. I was very close to my father, he was my Dad first and foremost, and also my friend. Now it appears my own life might be shortened in a similar way because I’ve been advised that if I don’t stop smoking I’m heading for some very serious health problems. I tried almost everything you could imagine to try to quit but I’m still smoking. I think what is holding me back is that every time I try to stop I am consumed with

thoughts of having a cigarette, so much so that it actually interferes with my concentration and even my work. I smoke 40 cigarettes a day, which I really can’t afford and I have my own family and really don’t want to die at an early age and bring the same pain to them that I went through myself. Can you please help me? - Aisling

Hi Aisling, To have lost your father to such a dreadful disease from smoking must have been very distressing and heartbreaking for you, and the extended family and friends of your father, and even more so that he passed on at an early age. Anyone who hasn’t been a smoker or studied the hold that an addiction can have over an individual would find it impossible to understand why your father didn’t quit smoking when he was diagnose with such an illness, or indeed why you haven’t stopped smoking considering you’ve had firsthand knowledge of what cigarettes can do and the pain and suffering that they cause. In the last 12 months you have spent €6188 on cigarettes even though you say you can’t afford it, money that would go a long way to paying bills and holidays, and even paying for a quit smoking programme. Furthermore, it is quite obvious that you have fallen into the trap that all addicted persons fall into, which is, trying to justify the addiction by coming up with ridicules notions as to why you should have just

one more smoke. However, claiming an interference with concentration must be one of the dumbest of them all! I sometimes ask myself is it the pro-smoking lobby that are putting such a ridiculous notion about. Look, when you smoke you are a smoker, and every smoker knows that he/she cannot go through a day, plan a trip to the shop or meet a friend for a coffee without planning and being occupied or “preoccupied” with where you will have your cigarette before, during and afterwards. Surely this preoccupation is interfering with your concentration right now, is it not!? Therefore, if you think that thoughts of cigarettes were causing a lack of concentration when you quit, I suggest that it was of no greater intensity than when you are smoking,

as in right now! Furthermore, a perceived lack of concentration when you stop smoking is usually soon replaced by a freedom, a freeing of mind and body from the addiction to nicotine. Over the next few weeks I will be rubbishing any notions that cigarettes do any good for anyone, or indeed the notion that it’s difficult to quit. Readers are invited to write why they smoke if they think it’s other than addiction. Creosote Warning: Some time ago we received a warning about the use of creosote in gardens. Apparently creosote is a very dangerous substance and even mild contact with it can cause cancer. Gardeners are asked to be very careful about using it, especially near fruit and veg patches, where, during warm weather when it sweats, it can leak into the food chain. So if you have ‘sleepers’ in your garden, check them out. It’s hard to believe that in less than four weeks we’ll be at mid-summers day. In the meantime we'll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Dig up, divide and replant bearded iris as soon as flowers fade. Tie in new rambler rose shoots, and cut out any that are surplus. Deadhead rhododendrons carefully, avoiding the young shoots immediately below. Prune brooms, philadelphus, deutzia and similar shrubs as they finish flowering. Cut down old hellebore stems to expose new growth. Continue sowing hardy perennials in a nursery bed, and biennials such as Canterbury belIs. Tie in the young stems of wall shrubs before they grow away from their supports.

Kitchen Garden Suspend pheromone traps in apple and pear trees to attract cod ling moth and other flying pests. Test first early potatoes for size, and continue earthing up as necessary. Remove runners from strawberry plants if not needed for propagation. Plant tomatoes outdoors in a sunny sheltered spot. Plant out marrows and cucumbers after fully hardening off. Plant out self-blanching celery close together in blocks. Pinch out

the tops of broad beans to deter aphids. In dry weather water seed drills before sowing, and allow to drain. Pick rhubarb regularly, and pinch out any flower stems.

Lawns & Hedges Continue mowing regularly, and trim fast-growing hedges to maintain a neat finish.

Greenhouse Sow primulas, both hardy kinds and P. obconica, malacoides and x kewensis varieties for winter flowering.

Water garden Finish adding hardy and half-hardy aquatics to ponds. Trawl surplus pondweed and blanket weed if threatening to choke areas of the pond.

In General Watch out for aphids generally, as they are breeding rapidly now. Plant out celeriac after fully hardening off plants.

Bono has had emergency surgery on his back, in Munich, after suffering an injury while rehearsing. Exact details surrounding how he did so, are still not known. When he is released from the hospital, the lead singer will return to Ireland where he will continue his recovery.

4 prebaked tart shells.

225g (8oz) chocolate with 70% cocoa solids (green and

blacks)(Valrhona).

300ml (1 1/4 cups) double (Heavy) cream.

2 table spoon's unsweetened cocoa powder.

Break chocolate into pieces and melt in a bowel over a pan of simmering water,warm the cream then stir it into the warm chocolate adding 1 tsp Grand Marnier (optional)Pour choc mix into tart shells and refridgerate for 1 to 2 hours till set.Remove 30 mins before serving and dust with cocoa powder,

Publicly one would expect him to spin a positive note; privately the management must have cause for concern having witnessed the form of some of the established players. The high ball into the full forward position hasn’t realised much success. Cussen has had a certain amount of success but Aisake Ó hAilpín has struggled to either score or lay the ball off (the Ray Cummins way). In theory using a tall man in a forward position should prove advantageous; in practice thus far it has not.The general after-match comment

was that there was a plan ‘A’ but that when needed plan ‘B’ seemed non-existent. Yes, the preparation has been better this year. Cork could have defeated the Premier County in 2009 and Tipperary themselves may not have recaptured their form of last year. In 1990 Cork went in as rank outsiders and beat Tipp who were the reigning all-Ireland champions.The result could not be described as a foregone conclusion but I would be tipping the Premier boys to go forward to a Munster semi-final against Limerick.Curious QuotesFormer Offaly hurler and T.V. pundit Michael Duignan made the following comments in The Star on Sunday after the league final, “In general Cork just didn’t seem capable of matching Galway’s intensity and that’s what you get from a team nearing the end of it’s life cycle. Senior Football Champion-shipA number of senior clubs will have been well pleased in retaining their senior status following their first round victories in the senior football championship. The result of the Nemo Rangers game was a foregone conclusion. The eight losing teams have two further chances of holding their position at senior level. Four of these are dual clubs – two of which, Na Piarsaigh and St. Nicks are dual senior clubs and are drawn against each other in both senior football and hurling competition. The other two clubs, Ballincollig and Valley Rovers participate in intermediate hurling. There will be serious pressure on all four clubs as more than likely they will have a number of dual players who will have to divide their time between both codes in the next month.On a positive note the County Board decided to delay both the senior and intermediate football and hurling in 2010. This allows

clubs to play more games in preparation. A major cause for concern was the introduction of new rules for the championship. These rules were passed at Congress in April but clubs had not experienced them previously. An interesting statistic is that Galway played New York in the senior football championship in April. This game was played under the old rules, yet on 15th. May counties played under the new rules. Clubs were most affected as at intercounty level most of the rules were experienced in the league.RefereesTen referees have been appointed for the senior intercounty championship; three of these hail from Cork: Diarmuid Kirwin, Cathal McAlister and John Sexton from Ballyhea.

College Corinthians AFCA fantastic week for the Club which saw our schoolboys and schoolgirl teams appear in six cup finals, all six teams performed with great credit and gave their all for their Club and we were fortunate enough to win four of the six finals. The finals provided fantastic entertainment and on behalf of the Club I would like to thank the Cork Schoolboys and Girls leagues for the tremendous effort they put in organizing the finals. Everything was top class and the kids win or lose had the time of their lives.Local Cup FinalsUnder 11Corinthians Boys met Ballincollig in the U11 Local Cup final on a drizzly Tuesday night at Turners cross. The game sprung into action with a second-minute opener from Ballincollig. Next, Corinthians captain Dean Swords shot wide to the right after Ballincollig failed to clear their lines. An opportunity fell to the green and whites but Stephen Jermyn made a quick reflex save and knocked the ball onto the post before rolling back into his arms. The defence were coming under more pressure but Daniel Cullen, Sean Desmond and Jack Murray cleared their lines ably. Just approaching the half time whistle, Ross Welch struck a glorious 18 yard injury time effort direct to the roof of the net after David J O'Regans cross. All level at the interval. After Ballincollig were on top for the first half,

Corinthians turned the tide and dominated the second. Colin O'Brien and David Dalton linked up well to cause Ballincollig trouble. The Ballincollig keeper saved well from an excellent effort from David Lynch. Extra time ensued and Harry Shanahans scored Corinthians second, prodding home after a frantic goal mouth scramble inside the six yard box in the first period, Ballincollig equalised in the second. Daragh Kelly, Mark O'Leary, Sam Meely and Daithi O'Regan came on to re-energise the blue and whites. It seemed a penalty shoot out was envitable until Bryan Cotter incredibly notched the winner for Corinthians with just four minutes remaining.

The Seniors lifted the Beamish Cup for the third time in six years in a dramatic pen shoot out win over Avondale in Turners Cross. Played in the warm evening sun 'Hall had plenty of possession but couldn't force a breakthrough. Avondale opened the scoring 5 mins into the second half, chances fell to Gary Drennan, Graham McCarthy & Declan O'Connell but stillno equaliser. Avondale had two great chances to wrap it up but didn't take them but it looked like it wouldn't matter when on 90 mins the 'Hall hit the post and with it our last chance. However with 92 mins on the clock Mark Murphy got possession 10 yards out with his back to goal but managed to twist and turn and roll the ball over the line for an equaliser. No goals in extra time and after the experience in the Keane Cup final (losing to Blarney on penalties) no one was looking forward to spot kicks. 'Hall keeper Ian O'Sullivan joined at the start of the season and "Ian from Rylane" has saved some important pens throughout the season and when needed most he proved to be the hero. Avondale scored, 'Hall missed but from then Ian saved 3 from Avondale's 4 and left Graham McCarthy the chance to win the trophy which he duly did. The season draws to a close next

week with another cup final, the O'Connell Cup on Sunday morning in Crosshaven with 11:00 kick off. The Seniors beat Blarney 2-1 in the semis on Thurs last with goals from Craig Duggan & Mark Murphy. Before this the last league match of the season away to Avondale on Thursday with a 7pm kick off.The MSL Jnrs lost 1-0 to Rockmount in their league playoff last Wednesday night, injuries to a few players really stretched the panel but Rockmount took their chance with 10 min to go. Well done to Tom Corcoran, Mark Barriscale and the panel for their seasons efforts.The AUL Jnrs are on the home straight in their league challenge. On Thursday last they had a hard fought 2-1 win over Postal Celtic in Moneygourney. Then on Saturday it was a head to head with Kilreen Celtic. Rory O'Sullivan scored after 10 min and it was looking good for the three points until the 90 min when the ‘Hall’ gave away a pen which Kilreen scored. From the centre off a corner was conceded by Kilreen and Donie O'Connell powered in a header at the back post to the delight of the 'Hall support. The final game of the season is away to Dunbar Celtic on Sunday afternoon with a 2:30 kick off.

Douglas GAAMinor Hurlers Impress Again:The Douglas minor hurlers continued their impressive form in the 12-a-side non-exam league with a convincing win over Glen Rovers on Saturday 22nd May. Wing back Seán Fogarty cut short a visit to Tipperary to return to Douglas in time for throw in and this reflected the seriousness with which the Douglas players are taking this competition. Douglas started brightly with Paul Fitzgerald and Brian Cuthbert especially prominent while Caolan Mulrooney once again demonstrated that he has found his niche at centre half back.A succession of early points from Martin Barry, Alan Cadogan and Podge Walsh provided a solid foundation for Douglas’ win. David Hanrahan was outstanding at right half back and broke forward to score a cracking goal mid way through the first half. Meanwhile,

the Douglas defensive partnership of James O’Mahony and Seán Collins has developed a telepathic understanding which the Glen struggled to breach.At the beginning of the second half the Glen fought back strongly but Douglas demonstrated their strength in depth by introducing Alan Murray, Roy Hickey and Seán Connolly and this succeeded in reigniting their challenge. Meanwhile, Josh Khra continued his good form and scored several long range points while Cadogan swooped for a goal to secure Douglas’ win. The concession of scores is used to separate sides in the event of teams being tied on points

at the end of this league. With that in mind, Douglas were grateful to goal keeper Shane O’Donoghue for producing a courageous last minute save when the Glen appeared certain to goal. Douglas’ next outing in this competition is scheduled for Thursday 27th May at 7.30pm in Togher when St. Finbarr’s provide the opposition.Fixtures:The Douglas Junior “A” hurlers were defeated last weekend by St. Finbarr’s on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-12 but have an opportunity to get back to winning ways when they face Passage on Thursday 27th May. Throw in at Passage is scheduled for 7.30pm. Meanwhile, on Friday 28th May at 7.30pm the Douglas senior hurlers play a league match against Bishopstown in Douglas. Last weekend the Junior “B” footballers suffered a 4-9 to 3-9 defeat to St. Vincent’s in the McSweeney Cup. Next weekend the action switches to the Junior “B” hurling league when Douglas play Whitechurch on Saturday 29th May. In a match of few chances, the hosts took the lead in the 5th minute, only for Conor O’Leary to set up John Boylan down the left flank and cross for Mark McAuliffe to equalize with five minutes remaining.

Blake added what proved to be the winner on the hour after Dylan Ronan’s lob rebounded off the keeper. The Hall defence of keeper Niall Hourihan, Eamonn Murphy, Jack Forde, Niall Woods and Scott O'Keeffe were excellent throughout.. The mid field of Jordan Griffin, Glen Stokes and Evan Healy worked tirelessly as did Michael Hennessy on the left wing who had his best game of the season.

Douglas ladies win Mid Cork A league final

Douglas ladies u14A football team created club history last night by beating rivals St Vals in the Mid Cork league final .The Douglas girls intent was obvious from the start but it was Vals who opened the scoring with a point. Douglas responded with a well taken point from Chloe Nason in the 5th minute and 2 minutes later Amy O’Connor broke through the Vals cover and smashed the ball against the post, she reacted quickest to the rebound and drilled to the net. Douglas were well in control at this stage and Amy Curtin set up Chloe Nason for 2 more great points. Hannah McCarthy scored a great point after 10 minutes, Emma Cotter chipped in with a point from a free after a foul on Rebecca Sheehan, and Lisa Smith added another to leave the score 1-6 to 0-1 after 20 minutes .The half back line of Sinead Roche Lydia Coveney and Ciara McCarthy were well in control at this stage and providing the forwards with plenty of quality ball. Vals benefitted from a soft goal and spurred on by this they added another goal and 2 points to leave the halftime score level at 1-6 to 2-3. This was a poor return for the Douglas girls who dominated the half but one thing that this team has in abundance is character and

they showed this right from the restart. Emma Cotter soloed through for a great point and straight from the kickout Amy O’Connor demonstrated her soccer skills with a quality left footed strike to the Vals net, Lisa Smith then soloed through the Vals defense for a great point to leave Douglas 5 points up at the 45 minute mark .Vals threatened several times during this period but resolute defending from the full back line of Jenny Owens ,Alicia Cremin and Eimear Crowley and some excellent goalkeeping from Chelsea Noonan kept Vals at Bay. Vals are tough, and eventually got a goal to leave 2 points between the sides with 10 minutes remaining. Douglas responded well and 2 great points from Hannah McCarthy and 1 from the excellent Lydia Coveney and this had Douglas 4 points in front. Vals got a point to leave a difference of a goal between the sides,and that’s when Douglas really showed their character. With Vals camped in the Douglas square,5 Blocks in a row Emma Barber 2 Sinead Roche1 Jenny Owens 1 and an amazing goalline block from Alicia Cremin saved the day .Evelyn Cotter set up a great chance for her namesake Emma but the Vals keeper pulled off a great save. Vals had 1 last goal chance but thankfully and deservedly for the Douglas girls it went wide .And so this great team added another bit of history to the club by becoming the 1st ladies team to win an 'A' grade football title in Douglas. Final score Douglas 2-11 , St Vals 3-5

Captain Emma Barber received the trophy from Caitriona McMenamon who congratulated Douglas for having achieved such an amount in a short space of time. It would be unfair to mention the names of any player that played well because in truth ,every one of the girls were outstanding. Coke and Pizza were the order of the day back in the club, and a great night was had by all.

Umbro U-15 Division OneDouglas Hall 5; Mayfield Utd. 3The Hall confirmed promotion with this exciting win over title rivals Mayfield Utd. Ryan Casey gave the home side the lead, but after the visitors went two in front before half-time, goals from Adrian O’Connell, Kevin Hayes Curtin (pen.), sub Rob Lehane & Paul Higginbottom sealed the three points on offer. With three matches left to play, Andy Lehane & Nick Swanton’s charges are still in the hunt for championship success.
