Saint John’s Day Family Gathering Join us on September 15 at 2:00pm, as we celebrate our namesake, Saint John Chrysostom by gathering for good food and friendship.

The menu consists of boiled whole lobster, ribs, corn on the cob, mac ‘n’ cheese, potato salad, clam chowder and for dessert, a selection of homemade pies. Assorted beverages will be available.

Tickets are $25pp, 10 & under free. Tickets are being sold after our weekend masses and are also available for purchase in the parish office weekdays 8 to 4pm.

Isaiah is speaking on behalf of the Lord, directly to us: “...proclaim my glory among the nations.” This might seem like too much of a challenge. Take a few minutes to ask God to whom should you be proclaiming God’s glory? Is it a family member, a co-worker or a friend? Tell your story of the importance of Jesus in your life. And, in case we think that task is for someone else, the Church in her wisdom reminds each one of us in today’s psalm refrain: “Go out to all the world and tell the good news!”

Summer vacation time is quickly slipping away! We hope that everyone is feeling rested before returning to school and Faith Formation classes. This summer we have been working on an exciting new program for all classes and we are enthusiastically anticipating a year filled with fun, friendship and faith. Registration forms for the 2019-2020 school year are available on our website, stjohnchrysostom02132.org/FaithFormation Additionally, the forms can be picked up in the parish office during regular office hours. Registrations and schedules are being emailed to the families of students who are currently enrolled in the program as well. Please download the forms and mail them to us, or drop them by the office. On Sunday, September 8 and September 15, we will also be collecting registration forms in the lobby after the 9:30 Family Mass. Join us on Sunday, September 15, at the 9:30 a.m. Liturgy as we commission our catechists and celebrate St. John’s Day. Refreshments will be served in the Hall following the Mass. This will be a good opportunity to meet your child’s teacher. All classes will begin on September 22.

Switzerland & Germany with Oberammergau Passion Play

In a plea to God to be saved from the Bubonic Plague, the citizens of Oberammergau pledged to perform a Passion Play if the town was protected. After no one fell ill, the town maintained their promise. Every ten years, this tiny

Bavarian hamlet expresses their gratitude by performing a Passion Play – a reenactment of the last days of the life of Jesus Christ. First held in 1634, the play is now performed every year ending in zero. Only the residents of Oberammergau act in the play and the dialogue is performed in German. Our trip will be August 30 through September 7, 2020. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the famous passion play and visit two of Europe’s finest destinations. Communion at Saint John’s Receiving the Eucharist at Mass is to receive Christ Himself. The “meaning” of Communion is most clearly signified when given under both species— both the Sacred Host and the Precious Blood. Therefore, starting next month, on the weekend of September 14 & 15 and then continuing to Christmas we will offer both the sacred Host and the Precious Blood of our Lord at Communion. Christ is truly and fully present in the sacred host alone. Christ is also fully present in the precious blood alone. Receiving both the bread and the wine are not required but we hope you will partake of both because receiving both makes more clear the meaning of Holy Communion as well as more firmly establishing the connection with the Last Supper. It is an intimate union. The Lord himself tells us "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him." (John 6:56)

Please remember in prayers this week the family of

Kathleen Vignolo

who has recently been called home to God.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who

have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring

with him those who have fallen asleep. - 1 Thes 4:13-14

Newly Baptized

We would like to welcome the newest member s of our parish:

George Paul Shom

who is being baptized in our Church.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us to “strive to

enter through the narrow gate.” Our call to be disciples and to follow Jesus demands that we learn to live for the sake of others. In the month of August, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist several families in our community, providing funds for food, utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

To Those Who are Serving We honor the service and pray for the continuing safety of our parishioners and family members serving our country.

Please remember in your prayers: Daniel G. Connell, U.S Marine Corps

Mark Hannon, US Army 82nd Airborne 3rd Brigade Lt. Connor A. Houston, U.S Army, Fort Bennings, GA

CPL Timothy Kelly, U.S. Marine Corps Liam T. Medina, U.S. Army, Fort Bliss El Paso TX

Captain Timothy Morris, U S Marine Corps Kelly B. Shea, U.S. Air Force, Oklahoma

Provide us with the name of any woman or man from our parish presently serving in the military. Please include service branch, and location. Send to Parish Office or email to [email protected] so we can list their names in our bulletin and keep them in our prayers.

Fall Bible Study—Last Call! Registration is ending for our Fall Bible Study on the Gospel of John. We begin Tuesday September 10 at 9:30 am. The cost of the materials is $16. Many of Jesus' miracles and teachings in John appear in no other Gospel and what is common to John and any of the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) is always told in a distinctive fashion by John. John places a special emphasis on Jesus' commandment to 'Love one another as I love you' (John 15:12)”. All adults are invited to consider joining. To register contact Mary Campion [email protected]

Becoming Involved There are many ways you can get involved in our community and will not take up too much of your time. We are continually in looking to add new Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. People retire and we are looking for others to join in. We particularly need more Eucharistic Ministers so we can offer you the precious blood of Christ at Mass in the Fall. Please consider helping to sell tickets after Mass to our various events, help with community outreach, or planning fun events like our fundraiser. To discuss how you can get involved in one of these ways (or in a way of your own choosing) please call the office 617-323-4410 and leave a message for Mary Campion. The more people active in our parish, the more vibrant we are and the more we can do. Thank you.

Community Corner Reflection Today’s Gospel shows Jesus walking through towns teaching on the way. Where is He going? He is going to Jerusalem to his own Crucifixion. He is asked “Will only a few people be saved?” I imagine at times you might have thought: “Will I get to heaven? Who will I see there? When I was a child I was taught that Jesus’s death on the Cross “opened the gates of heaven”. At the end of the reading we hear that many from north, south, east and west will be a part of the Kingdom of heaven. Picture it: we will be in heaven with people of many races and many nations. Some in heaven will be who we consider the outcasts in this life. Others, who thought they were first, will not make it. Jesus opens the door to those who truly love Him, who want to have more than a superficial relationship with him. Let us seek the Lord together in this great community of St. John’s. May God bless you and your family.

Sometimes I want to ask God why He allows poverty, famine, and injustice in the world when He could do something about it, but I realize He just might ask me the same question.
