The situation 1991

• Mostly a tradition of apprenticeship research training

• Small programs – if one could talk of programs• The tradition from Wilhelm von Humboldt –

research education the central function of the university

• The professionalization of research in many areas – research based professions

• Some conditions for the existence of doctoral education:– a tradition of written (not only oral) examinations– a tradition where students write the thesis– research at the university and an organization with
