Ryde Schools Spectacular The Junior Choir performed brilliantly last night at the Sydney Opera House. I would like to pass on my congratulations to all of the participating students and give a big thank you to Louise Farag who prepared the students so beautifully for what was a fantastic performance!

Returning to NSDS in 2018 If you have not yet handed in your note advising your child/ren’s return to NSDS next year, please do so early next week. This information is vital to help us plan out classes and ensure we have the very best teachers for your child/ren. A copy can be found on page 9 of this newsletter and is also downloadable from the school website http://www.nthsyddem-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/.
Class Placements for 2018 As part of our planning for next year your child will soon be asked to write down the names of 7 children with whom they have a friendship. All attempts will then be made to ensure that every child is placed with one of the children on their list. It is important to note that it is not possible to ensure that each child is with their best friend. The placing of children into their new classes each year is a complex process. Classes at the DEM are not graded academically and each year we strive to ensure that we have well balanced classes taking into consideration the following points:
• Gender; • Academic ability; • Language needs; • Medical needs; and • Behavioural needs.
If you feel there are exceptional circumstances that need to be considered when allocating your child to a class for 2018, a referral form will need to be submitted to the School’s Learning Support Team. This form will need to be completed by your child’s current school or pre-school teacher and by you. Please note there are two parent forms. One is a request to have your child separated from another student. The second form is a request for your child to be placed with another child. Please be aware that these requests are only granted in exceptional circumstances. You will find a copy of these forms on pages 9 & 10 of this newsletter. They are also available to download from the school website under notes and forms (http://www.nthsyddem-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/notes-and-forms). These forms will need to be completed and returned to the school office prior to Friday 17 November. The Learning Support Team will review the information provided along with any additional information supplied by you with regard to how your child’s learning may be impacted by being separated from (or placed with) any other student . We ask for feedback on any social or emotional issues as well.

Year 5 Camp Year 5 have reportedly had a great time in Canberra. We look forward to hearing more from them in next week’s newsletter.
Year 5 Selective High School Applications – Year 7 in 2019 Please ensure you have returned an ‘Intention to Apply’ note for our records, as well as submitting an online application if you wish your child to sit the Selective High Schools Placement test. Key dates: Tuesday 10 October – Application website OPENS; Monday 13 November (at 10:00pm ESDST) – Application website CLOSES; Thursday 15 March 2018 – Students are required to sit the Selective High School Placement Test.
Sporting Achievements Congratulations go to Teyah in Year 6 who came 13th in the state for 11 year girls High Jump and to Sofia in Year 5 who also competed at the state carnival and came 21st in the 10 year girls 100m. Two excellent results girls!
English Evaluation Parent Survey Each year, the Dem evaluates one major and one or two minor school programs. This year our major program evaluation focuses on English. As part of the evaluations, we collect data from classroom observations, student performance and student, teacher and parent surveys. As English is such a broad area, we have chosen to focus on reading and writing for our surveys. End of Year Festival – Save the Date! After the success of last year’s Festival, we will again be holding the End of Year Festival at North Sydney Oval on Friday 1 December. If you would like to run a food or activity stall, or wish to volunteer your time, please contact the P&C at [email protected]. We look forward to another fun-filled afternoon/evening of performances, rides and activities.
Interrelate Program The P&C will again be sponsoring the Interrelate Sexuality and Relationship Education program for families in Years 3 to 6 on Tuesday 5 December in the Library. There are two sessions for families to attend:
Session 1 is for students in Years 3 to 6 focusing on how our bodies work and the differences between males and females;
Session 2 is recommended for students in Years 5 & 6 but students in Years 3 & 4 are welcome to attend with a parent/caregiver if parents feel this is appropriate for their child. This session focuses on physical, social and emotional changes associated with puberty.
A flyer/permission note will be going home with all 3-6 students next week.
Cyber Safety At North Sydney Demonstration School, students in each grade participate in cyber safety lessons that are age appropriate. The school, however, has no control over what students are allowed to access when at home. Road Safety Messages for Parents The Dem is a very busy place before and after school when parents & carers are dropping off and picking up their child/ren. We live in a high pedestrian and high vehicular traffic area and we want all children to be safe. Please remind yourselves of this as you drop your children off or collect them from school each day. The school will continue to encourage parking rangers to be present in the afternoons and mornings to ensure that dangerous behaviours such as double parking and 3 point turns are discouraged. Please also remember that due to the number of staff at the Dem, the school car park is also a busy location. I would like to remind parents that the car park is not to be used for drop-off and pick-up due to the potential hazard that is caused for both drivers and pedestrians. For the safety of everyone it is also important that you do not walk, ride, or push a pram through the car park and take especial care to fully supervise children when crossing in front of the car park entrance. Supervision before and after school A reminder to all parents and carers that the school day starts at 8:55am and ends at 2:55pm. Students are not permitted to be on the school premises before 8:25am as there is no teacher supervision before 8:25am. Teacher supervision finishes at 3:15pm in the afternoon. If you would like to stay at school with your child after this time please ensure that your child stays in the K-2 or 3-6 playground, that they have a Stay and Play wrist band, and that they are within your line of sight.
Do you know someone starting school next year? If you know of a child who will be starting school for the first time next year at North Sydney Demonstration School please let them know that enrolments are now open for 2018. Enrolling now will ensure that children are booked into the school’s Orientation Program and that parents are aware of all dates for future information evenings and school tours. The final tour to be held this year is on Tuesday 28 November 2017.

Fruit Salad is back on the menu for summer on Mondays and Tuesdays for $4.00 (Vanilla yoghurt optional).
Volunteer helper needed on Tuesday mornings for 2 hours to assist Karen and Kristina during the busiest time. If you are interested, please just drop by the Tuckshop and let us know.
Drink prices will increase by 20c from Monday 30 October due to a general price rise as well as the implementation of the Cash Deposit / Rebate System.

Statement of Account
The Term 4 Statement of Account reminders were emailed to parents today on Friday 27 October 2017. When paying online (via POP) please check what is still outstanding by calling the Office on 9955 2822. Please keep a note of payments made so that when excursion notes come home for your signature, you do not accidentally pay for items twice.

Year 2 Band Demonstration & 2018 Band Applications
The annual instrument demonstration for Year 2 students interested in the School Band Program took place on Thursday. The students were excited to learn about the various instruments that they could play if they joined the school band program in 2018. If students are interested in joining a band, please return 2018 Band application form (please see the next 2 pages) to the school office as soon as possible. We look forward to another exciting year of musical enjoyment and progress. Thank you to Phil Molloy from Directions in Music for conducting an entertaining and informative session. Thank you also to the Year 6 students who volunteered to demonstrate their instruments: Kai, Vaishnavi, Sam, Stephen, Gouri and Harrison.
Junior Band Concert We are looking forward to the Junior Band Concert next week on Thursday 2 November 2017 (Week 4) at 6.30pm in the school hall. An attendance note was given to students and should be returned to the school office. Students should arrive at the hall by 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. We look forward to seeing as many parents, carers and friends as possible attend this event to support our youngest band members and observe the progress they have made throughout their first year with the band program.
End of Year All Bands Concert The end of year concert, involving the all three of our school bands, will be held at the North Sydney Leagues Club on Monday 4 December 2017. Please place this date in your diaries so that we can all celebrate the wonderful success of all of our dedicated band students. Further information about this concert will be issued in the coming weeks.
Instrument Maintenance & Repair or other Band Enquiries We remind students to treat instruments with care at all times to minimise damage and the need for repairs during the year. If your child’s school hired instrument requires repairs or you have any other band enquiries please contact Melissa Lanigan ([email protected]).
