The Dem Newsletter Week 4 - Friday 3 November 2017 Kindergarten Orientation We welcomed 113 Kindergarten students this week for Kindergarten Orientation 2017. Once again we were delighted with our new cohort of children and can’t wait for them to start. Kindergarten Orientation will occur on Monday and Thursday morning next week and on Thursday morning of the following week. The orientation program allows children an opportunity to get to know the school environment and some of the teachers and will hopefully ease any first day nerves. Thank you to Holly Kendall for organising these events and to the children and teachers in Year 1 to 6 who have welcomed our 2017 Kindergarten children into their rooms with such warmth. Peter Pan Musical Tickets Tickets for Peter Pan were released last Friday and are selling fast. You can still purchase tickets via trybooking.com. See pages 4 & 5 for more details. Please use either of the following links to purchase your tickets: https://www.trybooking.com/SBAB or https://www.trybooking.com/317045 English Evaluation Parent Survey Each year, the Dem evaluates one major and one or two minor school programs. This year our major program evaluation focuses on English. As part of the evaluations, we collect data from classroom observations, student performance and student, teacher and parent surveys. As English is such a broad area, we have chosen to focus on reading and writing for our surveys. Thank you to the few parents who have already replied. We would like to have a larger response group to assist with providing an accurate evaluation for all, so we encourage more parents to participate in this survey. Please use this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5R59JKT. The survey will close on Friday 10 November. Class Placements for 2018 As part of our planning for next year your child will soon be asked to write down the names of 7 children with whom they have a friendship. All attempts will then be made to ensure that every child is placed with one of the children on their list. It is important to note that it is not possible to ensure that each child is with their best friend. The placing of children into their new classes each year is a complex process. Classes at the DEM are not graded academically and each year we strive to ensure that we have well balanced classes taking into consideration the following points: Gender; Academic ability; Language needs; Medical needs; and Behavioural needs. If you feel there are exceptional circumstances that need to be considered when allocating your child to a class for 2018, a referral form will need to be submitted to the School’s Learning Support Team. This form will need to be completed by your child’s current school or pre-school teacher and by you. Please note there are two parent forms. One is a request to have your child separated from another student. The second form is a request for your child to be placed with another child. What’s On in Term 4, 2017? Session 1 is for students in Years 3 to 6 focusing on how our bodies work and the differences between males and females;

Session 2 is recommended for students in Years 5 & 6 but students in Years 3 & 4 are welcome to attend with a parent/caregiver if parents feel this is appropriate for their child. This session focuses on physical, social and emotional changes associated with puberty.

A flyer/permission note went home with all students in Years 3 to 6 this week. A copy is attached on page 10 of this newsletter.

Cyber Safety At North Sydney Demonstration School, students in each grade participate in cyber safety lessons that are age appropriate. The school, however, has no control over what students are allowed to access when at home. Please read the link below and be vigilant when your child is accessing the internet when under your supervision: http://www.smh.com.au/national/predator-posed-as-justin-bieber-on-music-app-to-target-eightyearold-girl-20170322-gv3o7c.html If you interested in more information about safe online Apps the following website may assist: https://safesmartsocial.com/app-guide-parents-teachers/

Getting home safe

Many of our students walk or catch the bus home each day. This is great for their health and for the environment. Well Done! Please be aware, however, that only students aged 8 or above should be travelling home alone (Mandatory Reporter Guidelines) and only children 10 or older should be crossing roads without an adult (Kids safe). If your child is older than 8 or 10 it is still important that you consider their individual circumstances including the child’s capacity to respond safely to unexpected events. Next week is NSW Bus Safety week. Bus Safety Week is part of the NSW Government’s ‘Be Bus Aware’ Campaign which aims to reinforce the road rules relating to buses in the community and promote safer on-road interactions between pedestrians, motorists, bicycle riders and buses. If you would like to know more please click here: http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/campaigns/be-bus-aware/index.html

Supervision before and after school A reminder to all parents and carers that the school day starts at 8:55am and ends at 2:55pm. Students are not permitted to be on the school premises before 8:25am as there is no teacher supervision before 8:25am. Teacher supervision finishes at 3:15pm in the afternoon. If you would like to stay at school with your child after this time please ensure that your child stays in the K-2 or 3-6 playground, that they have a Stay and Play wrist band, and that they are within your line of sight.

Do you know someone starting school next year? If you know of a child who will be starting school for the first time next year at North Sydney Demonstration School please let them know that enrolments are now open for 2018. Enrolling now will ensure that children are booked into the school’s Orientation Program and that parents are aware of all dates for future information evenings and school tours. The final tour to be held this year is on Tuesday 28 November 2017.

FABStar!

FABStar! is an initiative to recognise

positive behaviours in the playground. A

FABStar! slip was drawn from all the

students who received FABStar! slips in

recognition of their positive behaviours on

the playground last week.

The K-2 Fabstar!s last week were Angela & Kavya from Year 1. The girls saw a group of boys arguing and went over to help. They used their problem solving and communication skills to help everyone be friends again.

Thank you Angela and Kavya!
