The Dem Newsletter Week 6 - Friday 17 November 2017 Peter Pan the Musical What an amazing night! Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make Peter Pan a performance that will stay in the hearts and memories of us all for years to come. Thank you especially to the cast and crew and to our Director, Jemma Thomas. Your professionalism and dedication is inspiring. I hope our many proud parents enjoyed the performance and we look forward to the 2019 school musical which will no doubt be an equally spectacular event. Ribbon Assembly and Sports Presentation Yesterday, parents were invited to attend the Track and Field Ribbon Assembly. This assembly acknowledges those students who achieved a top three place in any Track or Field event at this year’s carnivals. Well done to all those students who received one or more ribbons. A full list of ribbon recipients can be found on pages 5 & 6 of this newsletter. A longer assembly will be held next year to ensure that more time can be spent acknowledging the events for which students received their ribbon. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Don’t forget the Sports Presentation Assembly will be held next Monday, 20 November at 9am in the Pacific Playground. This assembly is about the best and fairest in class sport, PSSA sports and other general sporting activities. We like to keep these awards a surprise for the students on the day. If your child is receiving an award, you will have been contacted by the classroom teacher so that you have the opportunity to be present on the day. There is also a student recognised as Sports Person of the Year for outstanding representative and external sporting achievements. This student is selected by the Sports Committee and Executive based on sporting achievements throughout the year. Cyber Safety Program On Monday, 20 November, Stage 3 students will be attending a ThinkUKnow session delivered by the NSW Police. ThinkUKnow is an evidence-based cyber safety program that provides presentations to Australian parents, carers, teachers and students. It provides information on the technologies young people use, the challenges they may face, and importantly, how they can be overcome. If you have any questions/concerns about your child attending the session, please contact Myra Wearne at [email protected] Year 6 Fun Fair – Wednesday 22 November Next Wednesday our Year Six students will be hosting their very own fair from 11:05 – 11:50am for K-2 and from 12:05 – 12:50pm for Years 3-6. This annual fund raising tradition promises to be a lot of fun with games, activities and food all available for purchase. Students in K-5 may bring $5 on the day to purchase food or take part in these activities with all funds raised going towards the Year Six gift to the school. What’s On in Term 4, 2017? Remembrance Day Ceremony

Last Saturday some of our Student Executive joined Mrs Wearne in representing the school at the North Sydney Remembrance Day Ceremony. Our local member, Mr Trent Zimmerman was present along with a number of local community members and families. I commend the Student Executive for taking time out of their normal weekend activities to participate in this important community event. Lest we Forget. End of Year Festival – Save the Date! This year the P&C have some new activities and food stalls at the festival. There will be games by North Sydney Scouts and North Sydney United Soccer, Christmas Craft to enjoy and new food stalls including Sweet & Savoury Crepes and a Lolly Stand. As always, the Festival comes together with a lot of help from parent/carer volunteers. If you are able to spare some time, the P&C would love to hear from you. This link takes you to the Volunteers page of the Dem P&C website where you can sign-up to time slots on all the various activities and stalls where help is needed. http://www.thedempc.com.au/event-volunteering/ For all End of Year Festival information, visit [email protected].

2017 School Evaluation: Parent Surveys Thank you to those parents who completed the school evaluation survey for Reading & Writing. Over the next few weeks we will also be evaluating Assessment and EAL/D. The EAL/D program (previously known as the ESL program or English as a second language program) supports students’ English language learning in reading, writing, speaking and listening. We would appreciate your feedback on these areas of educational provision. Parents can participate in the online surveys through accessing the following links. Assessment survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/assessment_parentsurvey EAL/D survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EALDParentSurvey The parent surveys will close on Friday, 1 December.

Rotary Tree of Joy Project This year we are supporting the Rotary Club of Chatswood in supporting local families who are suffering hardship, women’s shelters for women and children needing care from domestic violence, nursing homes where residents may not have any family, teenagers through Youth off the Streets and families with disabilities or hardship including farmers accessed through the Rural Financial Counselling Service. This year we will be supporting the Salvation Army and St Vincent’s de Paul – donating toys for kids aged 3-10 years or toiletries for the older children. We are also helping to fill the Rotary Food Hampers given to needy families by donating non-perishable food for the hampers. Thank you NSDS families for supporting these charities once again with your usual generosity. The Tree of Joy will soon be erected in the foyer.

Getting home safe Many of our students walk or catch the bus home each day. This is great for their health and for the environment. Well Done! Please be aware, however, that only students aged 8 or above should be travelling home alone (Mandatory Reporter Guidelines) and only children 10 or older should be crossing roads without an adult (Kids safe). If your child is older than 8 or 10 it is still important that you consider their individual circumstances including the child’s capacity to respond safely to unexpected events.

Do you know someone starting school next year? If you know of a child who will be starting school for the first time next year at North Sydney Demonstration School please let them know that the final school tour will be on Tuesday 28 November 2017. Myra Wearne, Principal

FABStar!

FABStar! is an initiative to recognise positive behaviours in the playground. A FABStar! slip was drawn from all the students who received FABstar! slips in recognition of their positive behaviour on the playground last week.

Well done to Toby in Year 3 who, on three

separate occasions, comforted and tried to

cheer up another student who was upset.

Thank you for being so caring, Toby.

Amazing work, Haru! You were spotted giving up your play time to help a group of

new students who have not played in the K-2 playground. It was so nice of you to

show them the boundaries and familiarise them with the school.

Congratulations Amira, Arabella, Romy and Hazel from Year 4. When a Year 3

boy asked to play with you, you brought him into your game and went out of your

way to make sure he was having fun. You all have amazing leadership skills.
