PRESIDENT’S REPORT - For NOVEMBER 2016 Greetings of thanksgiving my friends.

I never tire of extolling the virtues of music. Another one; Fun. How can one resist smiling when hearing “Mairsy Doats” or Abba Dabba Honeymoon? And I like and am entertained by tunes tastefully played in a tempo not intended by their composer. Such as “Happy Days Are Here Again” played ultra-slowly as a ballad. [the composer intended it to celebrate the great

depression’s end.] Conversely, some ballads, such as Indian Love Call, lend themselves to rhythmic tempos. Your Board’s attention is directed towards formalizing the installation of us incumbents. No one has answered the call to volunteer for nomination and election to relieve any of us. We have been receiving musician-donations to support our Club but there are not many of us to do so. I have engaged members of a Boy Scout troop-which happens to meet here. They will help transport sound equipment to the Elks building from the storage trailer in preparation for the sessions. We old guys surely need the help. URT of the month: human suspension bridges: Until the latest 20 years or so heavy loads were man-handled through a combination of hand trucks and arms-out-stretched-lifting each end, resulting in severe back stress. Then along came some genius who adapted and applied the principal of long-span bridge support: hanging the load from suspended cables. So now one sees a new refrigerator unpacked outside and delivered to its kitchen spot by two guys with straps passing beneath it and vertically up to their shoulders. They bear the load axially down their spines, instead of away from their torsos, risking back muscle strain. Ingenious! Talk about your bad news/good news! You have had the misfortune to have been shanghaied on the 19th century Barbary coast and made to serve in the hot filthy hold of a Galley ship as one of 20 oarsmen rowing the sail-less vessel. The first mate comes down and says : “First, there will be an extra ration of grog for all today. Second, the captain has decide to take up water skiing” There will be a short board meeting following the next session. Your Prez. Frank Lindskoog

SEEN AT THE SCENE IN OCTOBER, 2016 By Billie Ricker, Editor Emeritus - The Delta Rag

It was an outstanding day of music and laughter. Even as I got misty-eyed when Midnight Rose played their beautiful rendition of Memories of You, although I wasn’t laughing, I was definitely enjoying the moment. Dannie Balser really had us laughing

as she described their recent outdoor gig. With smokers on both sides of them. Not cigarette smokers, but bratwurst type smokers. The kind that make smoke that makes your eyes smart and your throat get dry. And then, when they adapted to smoky air, the chain-saw contest started. Yep, big, loud, 2-man chain-saws! Dannie said they were so glad to be playing inside at our session. Their pianist, Bonnie Otto, added that she had played a 3-hour gig in a cigar bar that was a challenge also. Edie Sanchez was escorted by her handsome grandson, Paul, who is visiting from Oregon. He said he came with Edie to one of our jazz sessions when he was 13. We enjoyed meeting him, and hope he returns before too long. Audrey Gullick has an excused absence for November. She is going to Arizona to see her grandkid play in a baseball tournament. I know she will enjoy it, win, lose or draw. Draw? They don’t draw in baseball, they do that in Art class. We missed Marlena Tygett, our lovely and vivacious sunshine lady. She is recovering from knee replacement surgery, but expects to be on hand for our November session. Marlena sends cards to our members who are ill, or otherwise in need of sunshine, and the club appreciates that very much. She is also half of the Raffle team. And a beautiful person. I asked Betty Warmdahl for news, and she said, “You don’t want news, you want gossip.” Well the gossip is, her husband, Carl was playing drums with Midnight Rose, but it wasn’t him keeping the beat. He has a Pacemaker! Hahahahaha. That’s a joke. Okay, it wasn’t funny. Sorry. One of the treats of the day was seeing Bob Noren here from Ecuador. He is a dear man, a terrific musician, and a former Board member. He is going to have a Pacemaker implanted also. Many of the best people are getting them. I have one myself. I got mine because my heart was only beating half the time. I just thought it was because my heart went with Cliff when he died. Albert Galaviz was wanting to know how to reach Frank Solari and Gabe Sallah. I miss those guys too, and wish they would drop in and say hello once in awhile. Tony Moreira was reminiscing about the days when the late Larry Dalonzo was active in the Society. Larry called himself “Vertically challenged.” Tony said at one of the festivals, Larry wanted to dance with a very tall gal, so he stood up on the edge of the stage, and was just the right height to dance with her as she stood on the floor. Larry must have made a thousand bird houses for the club raffle. I still have one of them although the building inspector would think it needs work. Larry always gave Wilt Fernandez and Bob Hirsch credit for helping with his projects. A warm welcome to new member, Candace Mano. I look forward to seeing her (and the rest of you too) on November 6. We’ll have a ball!

P. P. (PAST PRESIDENT) SEZ - For November 2016

The Wednesday night live-jazz sessions at the Straw Hat Pizza Place in Rancho Cordova are very well attended. (See Support Live Dixieland page 8 for the

November lineup.) These sessions remind me of the old days with Roy Harper’s Riverbank Blues Band at Shakeys Pizza on 57th St. in Sacramento The night always concluded with our playing of the Torch (AKA: the Kansas City Torch.) “Gee but it’s great when the gangs all gone home…..etc.”) Our Fans (AKA: The Choir) would always be there, wearing their red T-shirts, and would sing along with us for our finale. Jill (Johnson) Harper was the pianist. I recently found my old Riverbank T Shirt. I told her I got it on OK but had to have help to get it back off. Darn thing must have shrunked over the years in storage. Ya Think?

ALICE BLUE GOWN is your homework assignment for November. If your feet aren’t taping when you hear this month’s U Tube homework assignment, you want to get your pulse and blood pressure checked ASAP! Cut and paste this link in your browser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqOGtlr_zDE Yes! I know it's usually a waltz….But not this time! This is a really good driving four-beat up tempo tune by one of my favorite jazz bands. The lineup: Red Nichols, coronet, Mannie Klein, trumpet, Miff Mole, trombone, Dudley Fosdick, mellophone, Fud Livingston, clarinet Jimmy Dorsey, alto sax, Adrian Rollini, bass sax, Arthur Schutt, piano, Carl Kress, guitar, Vic Berton, drums. Recorded in New York, February 16, 1929. Does that Jimmy Dorsey Alto Sax sound like a C Melody Sax to you? Trivia Time: Alice blue is a pale tint of azure blue that was favored by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt. The hit song "Alice Blue Gown" (inspired by Longworth's signature gown for Alice Roosevelt) premiered in Harry Tierney's 1919 Broadway musical Irene. The musical was made into a film in 1940 starring Anna Neagle and Ray Milland. I told this story before but it fits nicely here: My Dad (Howard “Duke” Lockwood) had an ice–cream-cone-in-the-forehead moment once...a very long time ago. Red Nichols was working in the Mare Island (Vallejo) shipyards during WW II. At nights, Red would come to Oakland and jam with some of the musicians at the Dime Jigs (AKA: The Rose Room). He and Dad became good friends. After one of their jam sessions, Red said: “Duke, I’m going down to Hollywood to play music and make a movie or two. I want you to be my trombone player.” Dad recalls his response was “Nah, Red. That’s OK. You go ahead. You’ll be back in a few weeks anyway.” The rest, of course, is music history. Red made the movie (several in fact), and was a big hit in the land of LA LA. Duhhhhh!

One of Red Nichols bands was known as the Arkansas Travelers (c. 1920s). And, coincidentally, mah frenz and fambly, I’m fixin to be out-cheer on 15 November fer a week, to see mah yunguns an thar yunguns in Arkansas. Humidity is done gone for the yarr and it bees tolerable nass bak thar rat naw. Here are some Arkansas words I be practicing fer mah trip: Jeet? = Did you eat? Ya Wanner? = Do you want to? Yotter = You ought to. Tuther = The other. Winner Tam = Winter time Yunguns = the kids Fer = For Mah = my. Chew = a Tobacco product Fit to be tied = Angry Tarred = Tired Whut = what. All Y'all = The Intensive form of y'all (which = ever-body.) Cattywampus = Askew. Example: The storm knocked the boat cattywampus and it started to take on water. That’s 30 for November 2016 Dick Lockwood - Editor The Delta Rag Registered Sax Defender - Immediate Past President SJDJS

Equipment Manager Larry Tyrell

From October 2016 For the past meeting Frank

Lindskoog hired four boy scouts to come in and help bring the equipment in. Two of their dads came in also and they helped set up some of the equipment. When Carl Kaiser came in all he had to do was fine tune the amplification system. I report this second hand as I ran the "Urban Cow" half Marathon in Sacramento, andI didn't get in on time to help. Frank, Carl and myself got the equipment back to the shed. It was a good day

Ode To Friend by Ruth Grijaiva

This is a poem, written just for you. Ever so loving, ever so true.

Ever a helper, a kind one, too. What would the world do, without you? God gives us friends, to teach us to love, Like, Jesu, who guides us from heaven above.

DA VEEP SEZ - For November- 2016 By: Carl Kaiser VP/MD A great time was had by all at our September session. After all, when the Midnight Rose Jazz Band is in the hall, one cannot help but have a great time! It must be in the the MRJB’s DNA! The folks in the band are all quite familiar to the SJDJS. Dannie Balser leads the group which includes Nancy Kreis, Bob Williams, Bonnie Otto, Ruben Smith and Carl Warmdahl. It was great to see Carl back in the fold playing the

drums after a much-too-long absence! As is generally the case, the jammers once again provided some great music. Our jammers this month included Gerry Eckert, Charlie Gehlbach, Bob Gonzales, Stephen Lee, Frank Lindskoog, Dick Lockwood, Jim Lucas, Bob Noren, Larry Tyrell, Chris Williams, and Dick Williams. In November, we will be treated to the sounds of the Chris Bradley Jazz Band. As an ensemble, they will be making their first visit to SJDJS, and will play some down home traditional New Orleans jazz tunes. There will also be several reunions among the musicians as several members of Chris’ band and SJDJS members go back four or five decades! If you are looking for something to do on a Tuesday evening, Chris’ band appears every the 2nd and 4th Tuesday at the Castle Rock Restaurant in Livermore. See you at our next session on November 6. You can reach me at: [email protected] Carl Kaiser, VP/MD
