MONEY MATTERS: For December 2016

Well, ...thanks to some quick thinking and fast maneuvering by some dedicated members of our club, we had a roof over our head and a place to hold our November 6th

session. We moved our Sunday Jazz to the Clarion Inn here in Stockton for that day and all had a great time listening and dancing to the Chris Bradley JB and all of our regular jammers. A huge thank you to Bob Romans of Cell Block 7 who helped immensely with locating this alternative location and for letting us borrow his sound system. What a great guy!!!!!! Due to the reduced rent and some incredible cash donations from some very fine people, we had a decent income this month. (see below) MARK KRAMER, who is one of our regular jammers, donated several hundred dollars as did Midnight Rose personnel, DANNER BALSER, NANCY KREIS and REUBEN SMITH combined. We can't thank you "4 fine musicians" enough for your past and continued support of our Stockton Club. You're the best!!!!

PRESIDENT’S REPORT - For DECEMBER 2016

Greetings my friends and Happy-New-Year wishes to us all. Most of us aficionados agree with William Congreve, the 17th century playwright who scripted his character: “Music hath charms to sooth the savage breast.” Would that he could know how prescient he was. Medical science now has posited that

Harmonica playing, which sucks only half the time, is therapeutic in treating pulmonary maladies! We musicians all find music mentally inspiring but harmoni-cats find it so physically. Doctors prescribe that. Darned if William didn’t get even the anatomy area [breast] correct. Commencing this month, the poolside venue at the Stockton Elks Club will be discontinued. [But should 2/3rds of the Elk-member bar patrons demand our performance over that of what is on the TV screen we will play for tips alone.] Henceforth we shall be scheduling board meetings based upon need rather than the calendar. To me it seems the smaller loyal cadre of listens/dancers/ musicians constitute the base of a social club as much as they do a jazz society. Doubtless this is happening throughout the U.S. Please don’t forget our need to garner donations and contributions if we are to continue the fun and comradery we have here. Friend’s get-togethers soon fade away if not scheduled in some way. URT of the month: The human face is comprised of only 5 features; eyes, brows, nose, mouth and overall shape. Is it not highly remarkable that our brains can discriminate among thousands of their minuscule individual different combinations and retain them in our memories for a lifetime? And, we can identify that combination from a distance of several dozen yards. I can’t think of any other image, animate or inanimate whose details are likewise discerned and stored for years. I always have regarded the government politicos (not the military and police) with disdain while feeling the great “dain” for music. Yet lamentably the two have this undeniably trait in common. The higher their populations ascend, the more treble “into they get.” As of now no board meeting is scheduled. Till next year, your Prez. Frank Lindskoog.

SEEN AT THE SCENE IN NOVEMBER, 2016 By Billie Ricker, Editor Emeritus - The Delta Rag

I had a marvelous time at the November session, and offer devout thanks to Dick Lockwood, our Past President, Editor, and Bon Vivant, who is responsible for arranging an

emergency, one-time session at the Clarion Inn in Stockton. You will read details of that elsewhere, but just be sure to tip your hat to Dick, without whom we would have had no November session. If I had a bunch of rose petals, I would throw them at the feet of Dick Williams for his Mecca Flat Blues arrangement and vocal. The rose petals are so he won’t mistake me for the “Mecca Flat Woman,” who is very bad; not nice like me. Mecca Flat Woman would throw cactus plants in his path. It’s no wonder I love that Blues.

Marlena Tygett was dancing the “Walker Boogie.” Translation: She is still recovering from knee replacement surgery, but she ignored the pain, gritted her teeth, and used a walker to join us in enjoying the music. She kept a smile on her face, and was her usual cheery self. It is always a pleasure to see her. Hey, what a pleasure to see Elinor Hackett with us. It has been too long. She is another person who brightens your day just by her presence. It was a triple treat to see Irene Stolberg. She is a cancer survivor, and I tell you, that lady just glows. Well, she always did, but I mean her glow has not dimmed an iota, and it makes my heart sing to look at her. She and Paul will be around, bringing extra personality to the club, so watch for them. Mike Kaelin was on hand, and won 2 raffle prizes. He offered Geri her choice of them, and she naturally passed up the food in favor of the flowers. And they were beautiful!

Audrey Gullick didn’t need an excused absence, but was back from Arizona and at work right on time. Maybe she will get a raise for being so dependable. (Don’t get excited, “a raise” means she would get a pillow to sit on to raise her.) She even helped me to the door, as my walker was trying to gallop off without me. Oh Oh! That’s twice I have mentioned walkers. Now I will mention Stephen and Kathleen Smith twice, lest you think we are a club of not young persons. Stephen and Kathleen help to keep the club’s mean age down. They are also a really neat couple. Bob Romans, about whom you read in Geri’s Money Matters column, joined us. His Cell Block 7 business card appears in the Delta Rag every month. We will let you know where he is playing.

I am so sad to tell you that Connie Sandoval passed away in September. Her granddaughter described her as, “funny, smart, kind, and loving.” That description is perfect. I always enjoyed her so much. I am told that her beloved Jessie has cancer, and will be living with one of their children. We are so sorry for Jessie, and we offer condolences to him and their family. We hope we will get to see Jessie, and offer our condolences in person, he is such a dear man.

December is always a special month, so make it a point to be at the Elks Lodge on December 4th. Be prepared to enjoy yourself. If you bring the blues, you must check them outside the door. Unless you can put them to music, you can’t bring them inside. Too much laughter isn’t good for them. And there will be laughter.

P. P. (PAST PRESIDENT) SEZ - For December 2016

Well Howdy to Y’All. I be back from Arr-Kansus now. OK….that’s it for the wonderful Arkansas version of the English language….at least for this year. I’ll have to check with Billie Ricker, but I believe I may have set the high-altitude record for the Delta Rag production. Unless one of the editors who have

preceded me did their writing while flying, I am proud to present my own nomination for the Mile-High Club. No silly...not that Mile High Club! This one for Writing! Yep, much of this issue of the Delta Rag was produced at 29,000 feet (or more) while traveling to and from Arkansas to see mah young-uns. Oops….. I said I was through with the Arkansas dialect and it just kinder slipped out. Sure was nice to see Bob Brennan (from the Livermore Blackbirds) with his friend Bee. I don’t know about you, but I for one am very glad the elections are over. I bet the next round of Presidential campaigns won’t start for at least two or three more weeks. We may even be treated to some regular news about weather, car crashes, murders and even some assorted feel-good stories for a while. In an attempt to cap off the election news Yada Yada Yada...etc., I selected this month’s homework tune for you. Though I must admit, it does have a Presidential flair. You will recall if you are doing your homework assignments, the song for November was “Alice Blue Gown”. That one said to have been attributed to Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Teddy Roosevelt. This month, your December homework on U Tube again features something connected to the Roosevelt Presidencies. Switch now to 1932. This one concerns President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The tune of the month for December, 2016, is “Happy Days Are Here Again.” Here is more information, courtesy of Wikipedia: “The song is probably best remembered as the campaign song for Franklin Delano Roosevelt's successful 1932 presidential campaign. According to Time Magazine, it gained prominence after a spontaneous decision by Roosevelt's advisers to play it at the 1932 Democratic National Convention, and went on to become the Democratic Party's "unofficial theme song for years to come. The song is also associated with the Repeal of Prohibition, which occurred shortly after Roosevelt's election where there were signs saying "Happy days are beer again" and so on.” That’s probably a lot more information than you wanted or needed. Here is the link to a performance of the tune that I like. The pictures are certain to send you down memory lane. Cut this link and paste it into your web browser. Turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW-0kbIcf1E

Performed by the Jack Hylton Orchestra, a British group. This was recorded in 1930. It really swings ….especially after the vocal…... so stick with it ... you won’t be sorry you did! Equipment Manager Larry Tyrell

From November 2016 The equipment manager had

an easy gig at the Clarion Hotel Carl brought in his own electric piano, amplifier and speaker. All Frank and I did was grumble about the fact that there wasn't any food or drink available.

Thankful by Ruth Grijaiva

As I walk along this country lane, thoughts of God are in my brain. I thank him for the lovely trees,

the chirping birds, the gentle breeze.

So curious, this meditation, the lovely quiet brings inspiration.

I want to write a poem of love in which I'll thank my God above. Who lets my sing of many things;

the joy and happiness love brings, those I love make life worth while, and precious little ones

whose smile can make me feel like I'm a queen. They make me thankful for my being.

DA VEEP SEZ - For November- 2016 By: Carl Kaiser VP/MD Preparing for the November session was a bit of a challenge for several SJDJS board members. Thank you to Rich Lockwood for organizing a plan which gave several of us specific jobs to do so we could enjoy a great day of jazz! As a retired school band director, teamwork was a term used at least once during every rehearsal, thousands of rehearsals! I am proud to be a board member of SJDJS!

I believe this was the first performance of Chris Bradley’s Jazz Band in Stockton. They are a very musical and entertaining group. STJS was treated to a variety of traditional jazz from all the masters! Many thanks to Mike Ross, the drummer, who brought his own set and was kind enough to permit our jammers to use it during their sets! It has been a great year for our jammers. Our November jammers included Bob Brennan (a first timer, come back again!), Charlie Gelbach, Carl Kaiser, Stephen Lee, Frank Lindskoog, Dick Lockwood, Mike Reilley, Bill Sharp, Larry Tyrell, Chris Williams and his twin brother, Dick Williams (!). OK, they are not twins, but they hold similar instruments! Once again, we will close out the year with the Mission Gold Jazz Band acting as our guest band. This makes three consecutive years that they have been the guest band in December. As you may recall, they also feature the sounds of Turk Murphy, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, and Lu Watters. Come and enjoy the holiday season dixieland style at the SJDJS December session! Looking ahead to 2017, we will have Jam sessions in January and February. The first Sunday of those months fall on New Years Day and the Super Bowl, respectively. With our well-known financial issues, we have made the decision not to hire guest bands those months. However, we plan to make a herculean effort to gather plenty of great jammers for those days. Be there! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Next holiday — the big one! Enjoy the rest of 2016! You can reach me at: [email protected] Carl Kaiser, VP/MD
