JUDGING
25.
LITERARY COMPETITION
THOUGHTS FOR JUDGES
Read each book, looking at the quality of writing.
Score the books you feel are the highest quality. The Rubric
and Holistic Scoring sheets may be used as a guide. (see
samples)
Make comments, so that you are able to support your
choice.
Discuss the books with the other readers to determine the
winners.
Choose winners for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. You may give
honorable mention to a book that did not receive a 1st, 2nd or
3rd place. Ties can be given for any of the places.
Please take the time to put a Post-it note in the back of each
book that includes a positive or helpful comment. This will
encourage these young students to continue writing.
Thank you so much for your time and expertise in judging this
year.
This is a wonderful project that rewards young writers, makes
Delta Kappa Gamma more visible in our communities and
schools and brings together members in friendship.
26.
HOLISTIC SCORING
When using holistic scoring for a book, the judge:
1. Makes a single, overall judgment of the quality of the writing sample.
2. Reads the book usually only once.
3. Ranks the book based on the overall impact made by the writing, taking
into account all the factors of good writing. (except handwriting)
FACTORS THAT DEFINE GOOD WRITING:
Organization—Beginning, Middle, End
Imagination or Creativity
Choice of Words
Sentence Structure
Grammar
Spelling
Neatness
A general criteria or guideline to keep in mind as you read through a book is:
60% - Creativity, originality, and following a logical sequence from
introduction to conclusion
20% - Neatness, awareness of sentence structure
10% - Illustrations: How well they relate to the text
5% - Spelling
5% - Paragraphs
4. Does not give any one factor special attention.
5. Does not correct or mark books. Uses judging sheet to score1 to 4.
6. Evaluates books with at least one other reader. Each judge reads the
books alone and then compares their score with the other reader’s score.
A one point difference between readers is permitted. If there is a larger
variance, another reader should also score the book.
7. NOTE: Differences of opinion with the subject matter in a book and
whether the judge likes or dislikes the subject written about should not
affect the score of a book if it is creative and well written.
8. Handwritten vs. typed should NOT affect the judge’s decision.
9. Several chapters have found it rewarding to leave notes to the students in
their books on Post-It notes. This could be a positive comment, something
that stood out or a contest rule that was omitted to make them ineligible.
10. Do NOT look at any of the contest page information. The books should
stand on their merit alone!
11. Abstain from voting in the final judging if you are familiar with any of the
books that are competing at any one grade level.

ILLUSTRATIONS
THOUGHTS FOR LOCAL JUDGES
Illustration awards may be given at the local level. (Only 1st
place Literary Winner can be sent to state, not local illustration
winners.)
Look for quality illustrations in all books at each grade level.
Score the books you feel are the highest quality, keeping in
mind the listed categories. (see next page)
Make comments, so that you are able to support your choice for
each place and category. (see next page)
Discuss the illustrations with other judges to determine the
winners.
At the state level winners are chosen for Grand Prize, 1st, 2nd, 3rd
and honorable mention with winners also for special categories.
You may choose winners at the local level for illustrations,
however do not send these to state. Only local Literary
Competition 1st place winners can be sent to state and
considered for state level illustrator awards. Do not send
illustration winners.
Please take time to put a Post-it note in the back of each book
that includes a positive or helpful comment about the
illustrations. This will encourage these young artists to continue
illustrating.
Thank you so much for your time and expertise in judging this year.
This is a wonderful project that rewards young artists, makes Delta
Kappa Gamma more visible in our communities and schools, and
brings together members in friendship.

LOCAL CELEBRATIONS
33.
CELEBRATING LOCAL CHAPTER WINNERS
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS LOCAL CHAPTERS HAVE USED FOR
CELEBRATING WINNERS
1. Winners shared their books and received their awards, followed
by a pizza and ice cream party. (Domino’s sold pizzas for $2.00
each and Culver’s donated frozen custard). They added juice,
carrots, and cookies.
2. Coupons could be donated by local businesses, check with such
places as Dairy Queen, McDonald’s and/or Hardee’s. Many local
chapters gave a coupon to each local entry. Also many chapters
gave certificates to each local entry.
3. A Literary Contest Awards Dinner was held for the first place
winners, their parents and teachers. Students read their winning
stories and received their awards.
4. The Shopping News in Platteville printed pictures of the winners,
their family and teachers, along with the text of their winning
stories. This large section is titled “IN SUPPORT OF LITERACY”.
(Ads are sold to surround the article.)
5. Photo Albums were made with the pictures of the local winners.
6. Newspaper articles told about Delta Kappa Gamma, the Literary
Competition, listed the winning authors and showed pictures of
the authors, their family and teachers.
7. A soda and cookie reception was held for all winners, 1st and 2nd
place winners read their books, 3rd place and honorable mentions
told about their books. Usually this is taped and shown on the
local TV channel.
8. Some chapters gave bookstore cards or gift certificates and/or
blank books to encourage writing.
34.
CELEBRATING LOCAL CHAPTER WINNERS Continued
9. First Place winners read their books on a local radio show.
Information about the Literary Competition and DKG were also
included in the program.
10. The book cover and some of the illustrations are projected as
authors read or discuss their books.
11. Local authors, teachers, administrators, and school board
members are invited to the celebration.
12. Members present awards, certificates and a treat to students in
their classroom or in an all school assembly.
I give permission to the state and local Literary Competition Committee, to use my
name and/or pictures taken during Literary Competition Receptions, to promote
and honor the Literary Competition on international, state and local media, their
websites and on display boards or PowerPoints.

1st Place---$50.00 check, Trophy, Ribbon (changed in 2012 from $100
