August – September 2019
Dear Kappa Sisters,
Our meeting on May 4, 2019 at the Pinellas Technical College was engaging
and rewarding. The Founders’ Day Program presented by Angie Wright-Nash
was a great reminder of Kappa Chapter’s heritage. Phyllis Omilak and Lael
Wilson presented Camye Dudovitz the Grant-in-Aid Award. Phyllis and Lael
spoke highly of Camye and are excited to mentor her as she continues her
journey as a woman educator. The members in attendance were reflective as
Barbara Corbett led us in a Memorial Service celebrating the lives of Emily Miller
and Cornelia Gause.
Our June Planning meeting was successful. This committee came in strong with
engaging discussion about outreach, District III meeting, and budget. This
second year of this biennium is going to be exciting. Plan to attend the
September 28th meeting at the University of South Florida, Sarasota Manatee
Campus. Dr. Mona Jain arranged a wonderful setting for Kappa Chapter to
meet. Come ready to meet with your committee and talk about what your
committee wants to do this second year.
The August 4, 2019 New Member Recruitment and Orientation Tea was well
attended. We had five potential members and six Kappa Sisters enjoying tea
and getting to know one another. Nicole Sierra completed her New Member
application. As Membership Chair, Angie Wright-Nash will present Nicole’s
application for membership at the September 28th meeting. Another good reason
to attend September 28th meeting! (Continued on Page 2)

Our first year of the 2018-2020 biennium, I have had us on a journey exploring the six
Principles of Leadership. You might ask why? DKG has seven purposes that we live by as
women educators and healthy leadership is required to keep us moving forward as we engage
in our Mission Statement “The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes
professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.” Kappa Chapter needs women
leaders to hold offices and serve on committees so we can mentor other women educators. We need leaders that will
encourage always, serve intentionally, and advance professionally. I am proud to announce we have three Kappa Sisters
that have accepted to serve on the Nomination Committee this biennium. Johncyna McRae and Linda Smock are
continuing Nomination Committee members and Judy Cook is the new nomination for vote. We will present Judy Cook’s
nomination for a vote at the September 28th meeting. Another good reason for you to attend this meeting! This trio of
women educators are off and running and will be approaching you to accept a nomination as they create a slate of
Officers to present at our January 2020 meeting. Please be ready to say yes to the Nomination Committee and take your
place of leadership for the next biennium 2020-2022.
Principle 6, our last leadership principle from Mark Sanborn, Power of Giving. The Power of Giving is about making the
world a better place. It is about making Kappa Chapter a better place for women educators. According to Sanborn, people
give of themselves so they can look beyond themselves. We are a part of a community, the Kappa Chapter community.
Sanborn said we give so we can be of greater service in helping others. Kappa Sisters are about serving other women
educators. Kappa Sisters give to Early Career Educators making their world better with support and successes. And
Sanborn stated giving makes us feel good. Kappa Sisters feel good when we see learners smile and women educators’
grateful faces. Giving is contagious, and when one Kappa Sister says yes to giving of her time and talents then other
Kappa Sisters step forward as well. Robert Greenleaf wrote in his book, Servant Leadership, “the whole purpose of
leadership is to serve.” Our lives are not infinite, and this has been shown by the lives of other DKG women who have
died so we must choose where and when to invest our time and talents. Ask, “Where can I make the greatest impact?” By
serving as an officer of Kappa Chapter, by serving on a committee of Kappa Chapter, by serving Early Career Educators.
It is like a ripple in the water, as members of DKG International, we touch the lives of one another at each and every
meeting, who in turn touch the lives of Early Career Educators by inviting them to become members and supporting them
in their classrooms, who in turn touch the lives of 20-30 learners. Your service starts the ripple and it spreads like rings
rippling out and beyond impacting our world more than you can imagine.
As we serve with one another our meetings become experiences that build and strengthen the leadership abilities of our
members. As you think of women educators to invite to our chapter meetings, let’s serve revealing our mission and vision.
Let’s implement professional programs that will help women reach their personal accomplishments. Let’s show how your
Kappa serving has been time well spent.

Sanborn proclaimed giving is a gift that gives back. Principle 6, Power of Giving, gives back.
Think of your Kappa Chapter sponsor, she served by giving time to you mentoring you into the
educator you are today. She may have shared her talents with you helping you to become
more professional and effective as a woman educator. As a Key Woman Educator increase your service, use your
leadership abilities to serve this coming year that will give back to your Kappa sponsor, and pay forward to future women
educators of Kappa Chapter and DKG.
PACE project is going strong. Let’s support our PACE girls with items for the Corner Store. Remember to bring two items
to put in the bag for Manatee and one for Pinellas.
Early Career Educators Outreach will continue. Manatee County Schools will be doing the New Teacher Orientation
online this fall so it will be a challenge to connect with these young women educators who are so excited about someone
reaching out to them and supporting them as they work hard their first years at their schools. As key women educators we
need to reach out to an early career educator to encourage and serve intentionally.
Our program at our September meeting will be committee meetings. Use your leadership abilities during your committee
meeting to plan actions we can execute to reach our Strategic Goals with wonderful key women educators like yourself in
Kappa Chapter.
In closing, we are Kappa Sisters, Key Woman Educators. We celebrate our leadership abilities to execute the DKG’s
seven purposes which inspires us. We become better leaders as we encourage, serve and develop character in others as
well as ourselves. Our focus this year of our biennium is to serve by executing programs, attending meetings and
mentoring others as we professionally advance all women educators. Thank you for all you do for Kappa Chapter and the
teaching profession.
Serving with enthusiasm,
Victoria Eastman, President

A word (or Two) from the lady who wears MANY hats …
Do you take care of you? No, I mean it. Do you make a concentrated effort to take care of yourself? Do you keep up with your doctor’s appointments? Do you try to eat healthy? Do you take time for yourself? Are you kind to yourself? Do you make sure that the voice you hear most – the one inside your head – says nice things to you? Do you get enough rest? Do you drink enough water? Do you “let it go to voicemail” when you’ve had enough?
When we held Edcamp 2019 in Pinellas County, one of the benefits of it not being as well-attended as I’d have liked was our ability to have a final “table session” that included all attendees. We had it later in the year than we should have scheduled it – already into “Testing Season” (I’m looking at the dates for next year to see if we can remedy that and have it earlier, when teachers aren’t quite so burned out). We devoted this final session to Teacher Self-Care, and it was QUITE the animated session, with the participants being excited to talk about how they take care of themselves, what they do to relieve stress (lots of GREAT wine recommendations!), and
discussions about book clubs, arts and crafts, and places to work out.
I had an epiphany over the summer about the necessity of self-care, when I realized that I need to start taking better care of myself, if I want to be able to care effectively for others. I’ve heard a lot, over the past few years, that “a DKG woman never says ‘no’,” and I understand that dedication and support it. Just realize that when you’re saying “yes” to everyone else, you still need to be putting yourself first – you can’t pour from an empty pitcher.
I hope to see some of you at the Fall Executive Board Meeting, and ALL of you at the Kappa Meeting the following week. Until then, I hope this finds you healthy and happy – and taking good care of yourselves.
You are SO loved!
Warm Kappa hugs,
Angie, VP

The Dedication of Dr. Mona Jain Middle School
August 8, 2019 – Bradenton, Florida
The ribbon-cutting dedication of Dr. Mona Jain Middle School was held on August 8, 2019 in Bradenton, Florida. Dr. Mohinder “Mona” Jain has been a member of Kappa Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma for 40-plus years. With her family, she came to Manatee County 1964. She had been a teacher and administrator in the American, British and Indian systems of education since 1961. In subsequent years, she taught biological, health, and physical sciences at Bayshore High School in Bradenton. Later, with the help of scholarships from Kappa Chapter, Mu State, DKG International, Mona earned a Ph.D. at the University of South Florida, and then went on to become a medical doctor. Over the years, she has been very involved in the community, in many organizations. She is a human rights activist. One of Mona’s proudest moments is serving on the Governor’s Commission on Education, and the executive board of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. She is a founding
member of the Women’s Resource Center of Manatee and the Manatee Commission on the Status of Women. One of Mona’s former students, who spoke at the dedication, said that in high school she was not getting any academic support from home. Mona, a positive, no-nonsense mentor who saw her potential, encouraged her to dream and to push harder. That young lady eventually went to college, and is now a successful business woman. She is one of many that Mona’s caring and sincerity touched over the years. Mona recently retired as director of Family Health Services for Manatee County Head Start. Mona’s husband, Kailash, is owner of a fine jewelry business in Sarasota; her daughter, Dr. Anila Jain, is a physician and child advocate in Manatee County. Mona is one of the women featured in the book, They Dared to Dream - Florida Women Who Shaped History, by Doris Weatherford.
