THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA INTERNATIONAL SEPTEMBER 2017 ETA STATE NORTH CAROLINA BUNCOMBE AND MADISON COUNTIES, REGION XI ALPHA PHI NEWS Summer/Fall Issue, Volume XI #II Dear Sisters, I hope you have had a refreshing summer and are looking forward to the new DKG year as I am. We have lots to do and lots of news to share! We are trying out some new meeting times and I hope that you can come for a dinner meeting at 5 PM at the usual Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church. We will order salad dinners from Luella’s Barbeque as you arrive. You can check their menu at luellabbq.com. It will be simplest if we just order dinner salads (they are quite satisfying), and we can share news as we eat. We do have plenty of business as shown in the agen- da, but it is important to remember the fellowship we share. Bring your ideas, willingness to serve, and love for each other. See you soon! share news as we eat.

We do have plenty of business as shown in the agen-

da, but it is important to remember the fellowship

we share. Bring your ideas, willingness to serve, and

love for each other. See you soon!

Best wishes,

Vicki

Alpha Phi Membership and News:

Alpha Phi works hard to support and care for its members– to celebrate the good times and help each oth-

er through the trials that come with life. Lois Jones has taken on the role of Sister Care Communicator.

She has done an excellent job in letting our sisters know about hardships and triumphs. If you have news

to share or would just like prayers and support, please contact Lois Jones at [email protected] . Thank

you once again Lois!

Sister’s Sister Program:

The membership committee encourages you to maintain contact with your Alpha Phi Sister throughout the year. Emails, phone calls, cards (birthday, travel postcards), goodie packages, etc. Think of something that makes you smile and consider doing the same for your new Alpha Phi sister. GOAL: Support and Nurture our own as we grow from the inside out.

Each newsletter I will be adding a tip to help you get the

news out about our chapter. Make it a habit to either talk to

someone, or have someone ask you about DKG and Alpha

Phi.

Tip #1: Make a personal connection to a prospective mem-

ber/colleague. Get to know them, invite them to a meeting,

and be ready to explain what Alpha Phi/DKG means to

you.

Tip #2: When you are interviewed or are submitting an

article to the newspaper about an accomplishment, include

your membership and roles in DKG, specifically in Alpha

Phi Chapter.

Tip #3: Invite student teachers and graduates looking for

jobs to sessions to help them practice interviewing strategies,

plan units, discuss interdisciplinary plans and learning envi-

ronments, classroom management, the common core, and

dealing with stress. Let them know they have resources avail-

able.

Tip #4: Work with local school boards and secure a place

on the agenda during their annual awards and scholarship

meeting to present a DKG chapter or district scholarship to

a deserving graduating senior.

Tip #5: DKG has an entire line-up of merchandise that

many of us have already in our possession. It ranges from

logo bearing cell phone microfiber cleaners to tote bags to t-

shirts Wear , carry or distribute these as gifts as a way to

broadcast our chapters and organization.

Tip #6: Volunteer to be a guest speaker and give a pro-

gram about the Society at local community meetings such as

Women’s Clubs, Service Clubs, or Chamber of Commerce

meetings.

Tip #7: Write and submit pictures and short articles to

local media outlets, showcasing the wonderful things your

chapter is doing and how others can get involved.

Tip #8: Volunteer as a mentor to younger teachers. Show-

case not only the best strategies in education, but also the

way to help out locally, statewide, nationally and internation-

ally.

Tip #9: If retired, volunteer in schools to help our younger

teachers with their everyday struggles and tell them about a

network of teachers ready, willing, and able to help out.

Tip #10: Share what happens in your meetings and for your

service projects to let prospective members know the good

your chapter does and how they work in the county, state,

and world.

Tip #11: Branch out at local professional development.

We all know that we are getting CEU’s we can also Broad-

cast about how our chapters are working in other ways to

broaden our horizons not just in content, but in personal

growth as well.

Tip #12: When speaking at different events, share your

chapter’s website address or pull potential members over to

peruse your chapter’s Facebook page to showcase all the

good work and fun you have in your chapter.
