    THE DEFINITIVE

For the first time at KIPP Infinity,

there will be a Student Government to give

students the opportunity to have a say in

the decisions made at the school. This will

allow KIPPsters to have a voice in the

school, with the intention of making school

life better and perhaps more fair.

    Many KIPPsters applied, and then

later campaigned until it was Election Day

on October 8th. The students were selectedbased on the votes casted by the entire

school. The students got a chance to ex-

perience democracy in action. The students

they picked were the ones they believed

would represent them best as a grade and

make a difference in the school.

    On Tuesday, October 13th, Mr.

Johnson, who is in charge of the council,

announced the KIPPsters chosen to be on

student government. The fifth grade had

only two who applied. They were both se-

lected as a result. The students in sixth and

seventh grade were based on the votes from

    their respective grades.

The representatives in the 8th grade

were carefully chose by Mr. Negron and

Mr. Johnson. It was decided that there

would be two representatives for 8th

grade; they would also be the student

leaders of the school and serve as co-

presidents. The two 8th graders chosen

for the job were Frederick Patterson

    and Jason Bravo.

    With the student government,

students at KIPP Infinity will feel that

they will have more rights than beforeand have some control over the deci-

sions that happen at school. Students

will have the opportunity to voice their

    concerns to the student leaders.

    Student government hopes to

increase the voice of students and be

    the connection between the students

and adults. The role of student govern-

ment is to get students involved and to

help improve the school, said Mr.

    Johnson.

    The following students were

chosen to be in student government:

    Jason Bravo (Co-President)

    Frederick Patterson (Co-President)

    Being a True KIPPster

David Cisse, a KIPPster from the Class of 2016, raised money for the 33 Chil-

ean miners who were trapped underground for 69 days. People all over the world

came together and tried to help out the miners. David was one of them. After hearing

about the plight of the miners in Ms. Stabrowskis 7th reading class, he started selling

snacks like Kudosbars, fruit snacks, and juice to make money. The fundraising began

around September 25th and continued up until the time that they were rescued. Themoney was later sent to the American Red Cross to help support the miners while they

were down there to help them survive. In total, David raised about $110, mostly on his

own, and with some help from his mom. It was the first time he tried raising money to

help others, and he plans on continuing to do so later. Currently, David is selling

snacks to raise money for the schools snack fund and for an NYPD volunteer group

that he participates in after school. David represents what it means to be a true KIPPster helping others in and out of school.

    Texas Leadership SummitBY AZANA MASON

On Thursday, October 7th, 2010, sixth graders Albert Rodriguezand Emilia Tineo went to Texas with Mr. Willey, the 5th grade writing

teacher for the KIPP Student Leadership Summit held every year forpromising young KIPPsters who show leadership potential.

They left very early that Thursday morning and took a three-hourflight to Houston, TX. When they got to the airport, they met other KIPPcousins before getting on a bus to Forest Glen Camp, which is located

just outside of Houston. They had to bring sleeping bags, clothes, andshower supplies.

They played team building games, reflected on their ownleadership strengths and weaknesses, represented KIPP Infinity with achant they did with the other children and adults of the KIPP NYC crew, and of course they made new friends. In addition, they participated inphysical activities such as swimming, rock climbing, zip lining andobstacle courses.

Albert and Emilias peers elected them to be represented at theleadership summit. These two individuals were selected based on

character traits they show every day, like grit, kindness, self-control,social intelligence, hope, zest, gratitude, love of learning, andleadership.

Leaders are brave. This experience inspired me to become abetter leader. I met other people my age who were trying their best to beleaders. This made me to be a better leader a better person, saidEmilia.

Albert said: I learned that when you are a leader, you learn to putothers in front of you. Sometimes, you care about others beforeyourself.

Mr. Almeida on NBCBY TANIA SMITH

Recently, our 6th grade math teacher, Mr. Almeida, wasfeatured on the NBC news for his amazing teaching skills here atKIPP: Infinity. For those who dont know, he was asked to ap pear onthe news for NBCs week-long tribute to Americas education. Theycalled it Education Nation where they debated if students shouldhave summer school, longer days, etc. In a nutshell, Mr. Almeidatalked about how teaching kids problem solving at a young age willhelp them to succeed in mathematics in the future. He also explainedhow a kids parents influence affects the learning of a child. If theparent is always saying that they did terrible in math, then it makes thechild think that he/she will also fail in math.

When asked what fame has come out of his appearance on thenews, Mr. Almeida responded, Ive been asked to appear on the

Monique Show and Im waiting on a call back. I also got a surprisevisit from my 2nd grade teacher. I was just teaching my students andshe walked right on in with Mr. Croncota by her side. She was the onewho influenced me to become a teacher and thats why I cried a little. He also says that if it wasnt for him being on the news, his 2 nd gradeteacher wouldnt have known where he was teaching.

It was an honor to represent KIPP: Infinity. I was glad thatNBC was making education relevant and it was an honor being a partof it. Mr. Almeida says that he wasnt nervous, I was just concernedwith making present, clear sentences on tips for being a good teacherand a supportive parent.

Overall, Joseph Almeida was excited to be featured on NBCnews, and, coming from a former student, I think he deserved it!

KIPP Infinity Raises Money toOffset the Cost of Snacks

    BY TANIA SMITH

The Department of Education has recently decided to stoppaying for our snacks. KIPP Infinity now has to raise the money topay for our snacks. Our snacks cost approximately 32 cents a day perKIPPster, which amounts to $64 a year per KIPPster, with a grandtotal of about $20,000 for the entire school.

But no worries! KIPPsters havent had any problem withdonating a little change each day towards our snack jar. Mr. Negronsays that if all of us donate just a couple of cents each day, it shouldpay for all of our snacks.

A visitor who came to school not too long ago was soimpressed with our behavior and work, he decided to drop in ahundred dollar bill. Yes, you heard correctly, ONE HUNDREDDOLLARS! As Mr. Negron said, he did it out of kindness, notbecause someone told him to do it.

While I think that the Department of Education should bepaying for snacks because food is a necessity, I think Mr. Negron isright to ask students to help pay for these snacks. We all need to chipin, said Samantha Reyes, an eighth grader.

    Is I.S. 195 closing down?BY MIKEYLA TATE

Due to low test scores and low academic achievement, I.S 195, the school that we shareour space with, may be closing down, along with 46 other schools in New York City.

Education officials announced the 47 schools on the list in late October, but that number maygo up when New York State announces its list of lowest achieving schools and when the cityreleases each schools report card in the next few weeks.

For a list of the schools that may close down, see the box to the right.Several meetings will be held with school officials, parents, and members of the

schools community before any school actually closes. If the school can develop a plan tomake dramatic changes, then the school may be removed from the closure list.

    Happy Halloween,KIPP: Infinity

    A Haunted Halloween

BY NAYA ROGERS AND TANIA SMITH

October 29, 2010, was KIPP: Infinitys 4th annual Halloween Party inour downstairs gym. From 1:00 to 4:00pm, students were disguised in theirown creative costumes, dancing to the latest hits from D.J. Griffith, stopping

every so often to snack on some of Ms. Cerons amazing food. The haunted house was also essential to the party. As if the boys locker room wasnt scary enough, the haunted house had creepy flashing lightsand mysterious creatures grabbing hold of the daring visitors.

This year was KIESs first year at the Halloween Party and instead ofdressing up in costumes, they had Silly Hat Day. They also werent allowed tovisit the haunted house because the teachers thought that it would be too scaryfor them. Instead of going inside the haunted house they enjoyed music anddelicious food.

While the KIPPsters were dancing and enjoying themselves, Mrs.Bravo-Willey and Mr. Willey decided to surprise us with a wonderful salsaroutine to Yo No Se Maana by Luis Enrique.

This years Halloween Party was a blast and we only wish that wehave the same experience next year!

    Ms. Rosario,

    Social Worker

I like the Halloween party becauseits one of the few opportunities thatstudents, teachers, and parents get tocome together. I think thatsometimes we teachers forget how

important it is for the students tohave a balance of academics and funtimes.

    Waiting for Superman: Movie

    ReviewBY GISELLE CUEVAS

The film has earned praise from and criticism fromcommentators, reformers and educators. Roger Ebert rated the film 3.5out of 4 stars. Lisa Schwarzbaum ofEntertainment Weekly gave the filman A-, calling it powerful, passionate, and potentially revolution-inducing. Varietynoted the films production quality as deservingevery superlative and felt that the film is never less weightless, thankslargely to the dedicated and teachers on whom Guggenheim focuses.Geraldo Rivera praisedthe film for promotingdiscussion ofeducational issues.

    Waiting for

Superman is adocumentary thattakes a look at theAmerican public

education system.Once admired by theentire world, Americanschools are now seen as afailure. Test scores aredropping, children are dropping out, and schools are closing due to lackof funding. At the heart of the documentary are the stories of 5 students:Bianca, Emily, Anthony, Daisy and Francisco. The 5 students are tryingto find a better chance at learning, and basically a chance at life. Theyall hope to get into a charter school, but theyre chances are very slim.

I saw this movie with my teammates from 2016 and 2015. Thisdocumentary was heartfelt and made me realize how lucky I am to be atone of the best schools in New York City: KIPP Infinity. I felt grateful.Ive also started to be mindful of what I say every t ime Im corrected bya teacher because I know that they know what s best for me. I highlyrecommend this movie. There may be some things in the movie that are

confusing to younger people, but I recommend that you see this ifyoure interested at all in education.

Dear Tiffany,Im really struggling to get enough sleep at night.

During the summer, I stayed up late, and I cant seem toget up early in the morning to come to school. Whatshould I do?

    Sincerely,Tired KIPPster

Dear Tired KIPPster,You probably stay up late because youre watching

TV or because your eyes are glued to the computer. Sorry tosay it, but some nights youre going to have to shut down the

electronics early to get up earlier and stay up throughout theday. If there is a day, though, that you stay up all night, it isimportant to drink water throughout the day to keep yourselfactive and running. Its just as important to eat a nice fullbreakfast before school. This should help you to stay focus andawake during the day. Also, going into middle school, it isyour responsibility to get up when youre supposed to. Its apart of growing up and youll need this skill going into adult-hood.

On a chilly October 30th, KIPP NYC College Prep hosted its 2nd An-

Before the football game, there was a soccer game and thecross country runners competed. There was food, face painting and entertain-ment. The high schools band played Sir Duke, Thriller OMG and fightsongs to get everyone pepped. The drum line of the band played We CanWin. The dance team performed to Thriller and Cooler Than Me as the

band played on. The cheerleading team brought spirit to the students and to thefootball team. Two high schoolstudents, one of whom was Ish-

were mostly gift cards, but the biggest prize was aPS3 Move. Finally, the smooth sounds of the 8thgrade Band performed Waiting for Tonight,Guantanmera, Oye Como Va, and LoveTrain.

Congratulations to all the performers andto everyone who helped make this show a greatsuccess! See you at next years LCS!

    Hut, Hut, Hike!

BY AUDREY BONNET AND SADE MERAN

As of press time, the undefeated KIPP Infinity flagfootball team is out to win it all this year! In a newsletter to the

team, Mr. Griffith wrote: This is the last week before playoffs, so this is the last time we can afford to lose a game. Fromthis point on, if we lose, we wont win a championship. Iwanted to make sure that the idea is clear in everyones heads

because it would be very unfortunate to go through this entireseason and lose playoffsDont let some single (Giant) ruinyour perfect season. Even though we had a loss of players, formany different reasons, we are still undefeated.

In flag football, there is, of course, a defense and anoffense, but with the KIPP Infinity flag football team, eachperson has their own character, and those characters havetheir own role to play during a game.

Christopher Ramos, an eighth grader on the team, commented that the best play he ever made was when hecaught the ball with one hand at the end zone for a touchdown. It feels great to be on this team, said Ramos.

Fellow eighth grader, Frederick Patterson, said, I feel

honored to be on the team. All football games are usually played on Saturdays on121st Street and Park Avenue.

    The Volleyball Team is Back!

    BY SADE MERAN

After a year off, the volleyball team has made KIPP Infinity the rulers ofvolleyball. Two years ago, the volleyball team was declared champions. The team iscoached by Ms. Stabrowski, the 7th grade literature teacher. As of press time, the teamplayed one game, and the second game will be on Tuesday, November 16, 2010.Playoffs will be held on December 12, 2010.

There are a total of 22 KIPPsters on the volleyball team. Over 50 KIPPsterstried out, which made the final selection difficult for Ms. Stabrowski. As a result, shedecided to make two teams: one called Team KIPP, and the other called Team Infinity.

Mikeyla Tate, a KIPPster in the class of 2016 and on Team Infinity commentedon the first game: The other team was easy to play against. They were getting easilydistracted, and it seemed like they didnt really care.

Stay tuned for more information about the volleyball teams efforts at theplayoffs.

    Run, KIPPsters, Run!

    BY AUDREY BONNET

At KIPP, weve all heard the saying, Read, baby, read. This time, its Run, KIPPsters, run. The cross countryteam is made up of a talented group of kids and hard workingcoaches. Ms. Fascilla, 5th grade mathematics teacher, and Ms.Schroeder, 5th grade intervention teacher, work hard to trainthe KIPPsters.

The team has raced in places like New Jersey, theBronx, and Manhattan. The races range from 1 mile to 1.7miles. Most of the races were a challenge to the kids, so theraces go according to the levels of the kids. For example, thefirst race was the 5th Avenue mile. Then, the New Jersey racewas 1.3 miles. Over the weeks these kids have been workinghard to achieve their goals.

It takes a lot of desire, discipline, and dedication to be apart of cross country. Even though youre part of a team, somuch of what you do is on you the individual.

Team KIPP: Daijah Daniels, Paloma Feliz, Derek Ferreira, Naomy Hernandez, Irving Lora, Argenis Marmol, Samaiyah Patrick, Francisco Pineda,Miguel Ramirez, Alexander Rosa, and Emilia Tineo

Team Infinity: DAsia Baldwin, Sulnerys Carmona, Joel De Jesus, Justin Givens, Brian Hernandez, Rasheed Lucas, Jahzell Ramirez, SamanthaReyes, Michael Rosa, Briana Marie Rosado, and Mikeyla Tate

At the end of each game, the flag football teams congratulate each other with a high-five.
