Joint responsibilities At Monday night's Rectorial hustings In Pollock Halls three distinct but closely connected Issues came under discussion.

One was the unjust system of Apartheid operating In south Africa, another was our present fight against govemment education cuts and the third was who should be our Rector for the next three years. Some people think that the Rectorial election should only be concerned with the last Issue, but like It or not the other two have, over the last lew weeks, become closely Involved with the position of Rector.

Concerning Mandela; It is now possible to register a protest vote lorhlm by wrillng 'Mandela' on your ballot paper. This will not be counted as a spoiled paper II you then vote lor the remaining candidates In the normal manner. The Mandela campaign see this as a challenge to the University to change the rules which allow candidates to stand lor election.

Concerning cuts in Education; John Mannix made an angry plea to students to renew their support lor the campaign against cuts which was so strong last term. Perhaps the most telling statement of the night was Mannix's assertion that It Is perfectly justified lor us to turn up at the hustings and grill candidates about what they intend to do about government spending cuts. But by electing a Rector who will light against cuts we are electing a Rector to help us In our struggle, not someone to struggle lor us. We cannot abdicate responsibility and then sit back and waltlorourlhroats to be cut.

Concerning the election; we should make II our responsibility to lind out aa much as we can about the candidates and then vote. That way we will gel the Rector we deserve.

14 THE STVOE.Nt Thutaday, 1m March 196S

IN THIS ALIEN ENVIRONMENT, SPACE TECHNOLOGY IS OUT OF ITS DEPTH

I ll'>JX'Cii ng u ndcrgrou nd gru. pipe· lines for fault, mav not sound like the ultimate: high-tech challenge. But, in fact, the: t:t'>k prul'cd to be: beyond the: 'state-ol-tl~<.~art'tl"t:hnologb pt~\ iousl~ a\ailablc -c\cn 10 militan and acrospaw apph~'" ion,_

------PROBLEM:

Design a \Chtclc which can tran:l inside: the pipe, carry ing equipment capable of idcnt ifying any significant defect, and pinpointing its position to within a mell'l: in a run of up to a hundred lci lomctri:s or more.

SOLUTION: THE INTELLIGENT PIG

The I ntdligent Pig, developed by the gas people, is a vehicle carrying highly advanced sensing. data processing and n..>cording equipment. Driven through the pipe by the gas pressure within it, the Pig can be used without taking the pipe out of service.

What is more, it can not only pinpoint any defect on the insideoroutside ofastcclpipe.butevcndescribcitsnaturc.

HOW?

Using st rong magnetic fields or e.lastic waves propagated at ultn1sonic frequencies, different types of sensors can detect corrosion, cracks, impact damage or distortion of the pipe. But the real challenge lay in processing the hundreds of millio!'l'iof signals produced by the sensors in an average run.

THERE WASN'T A COMPUTER SMALL ENOUGH AND TOUGH

ENOUGH

Man) ol the pipe!> to be inspected arc lc:.> than 305mm in diameter. To fit suflicicntlv powcdul data processing equipment into the tiny space available, hybrid m icroci rcui ts incorporating custom-<k'Signedsi liconchipshad to be developed. And since the space rcstric· lions al"' limitbatterv si/.C and lh<:refore power. manv of th~ highly advanced electromccomponents have to operate at the \CI) limitsof their specifications. What's morc, theem•ironment inside the pipe isn't exac ll) friendh. All the highlysophi;ticatcd Loquipmcnt carried by the Pig has had to be designed to tolerate or be protected from extreme vibration, mt.-chanical shock, dirt, and gas pr~ureofup to 70 atmospheres.

A'TOMORROW'S WORLD' TAPE RECORDER

The sheer '·olu me of data to be stored inspired the development of what is probably the most ad,•anced ultraminiaturised tape recordercurremly in

exbtcncc. Making extensive uw of subminiatur<' hvbrid microek-ctronics,new types of recording head:. and ultraprecision methanicall'nginect·ing, this little mal'\cl C<tn .,tore up to 500 million reading., on a <oinglc reel of 'tandard one-inch tapc.withana~=rac\ of better than one-thousandth of one P<'•cent!

FROM REEL TO REELS

Once the Pig h:l'- fini~h..'<l its run,the next JOb is to pH•parc the data for analy· sb b' po\\crful. ad' anced computers such as the VM IIn80. There\ so much inlotmat ion in the Pig'~ tin) recorder that nholo\ ,.'CI' of t.'Omputer tape are necd"d to t·cccivc it.and manv hours of computer tirnc to anal) ~cit.

THE RESULT

r.ki<.11u\ underground gas transm~ion network i'> :1 multi-bill ion pound asset. And the tt.'Chnical pyrotechnics wc'\'cjust del>Cribed ha\ca thoroughly down-to-canhcnd n..osuh-thcy help the gas people to maintain thilo ru.sct more efficiently and cost effect h·ely.

WHYTHEGAS PEOPLELIVElN THE FUTURE

The fact that gas is Britain's most popular domestic fuel-and a powerfu l and growing force in industry,too-is~he result of many ycars'fort-sight,planntng and massive investment by Brit~h Gas scientists and cnginocrs. And they~~~~~ working fort he future- to meet Bntams energy needs in the next century.
