The Annual Poster Session is a tradition of long standing in the Dayton Section. This year, however, we are initiating a system where venues rotate among area Universities. In addition, we are increasing the number of $100 awards for outstanding undergraduate and graduate poster presentations from 4 to 6. The Dayton Section Officers invite you, your colleagues, and students to present a poster relating to any area of chemical research. Complimentary food and soft drinks will be provided by the Section. In addition to poster awards, we will also recognize the outstanding junior chemistry major at each college and university within the Section’s boundaries with the Patterson College Chemistry Award.

Directions: Take US-35 East to Xenia. Continue onto W. Main St. Turn left onto Church St. Make a slight left onto US-42 North/Columbus Ave. and continue to follow US-42 North. Turn left onto Brush Row Rd. CSU will be on your left.

Call for Poster Abstracts Send abstracts of 250 words or fewer by close of business Tuesday, March 27, 2012 to Prof. Suzanne Seleem at [email protected]. For students, please indicate on the abstract if you would like to be considered for an award and whether you are an under-graduate or graduate student. Please use standard ACS abstract format (see the example on DaytonACS.org/abstract/Abstract Template.doc).

Volunteers Needed for TechFest 2012 When: Saturday, Feb. 18, 10 AM–6 PM, and Sunday Feb. 19, 11 AM–5 PM Where: Sinclair Community College Ponitz Center (Building 12) Parking: Free in the underground garage beneath Building 12 off Fourth St.

This is a free event about sharing and learning about math, science, engineering, and tech-nology – past present and future – for the entire family. TechFest features over sixty inter-active science and technology demonstrations, exhibits, and games hosted by dedicated volunteers and practicing professionals in the Miami Valley representing professional so-cieties, universities, industry, the Air Force, and NASA. The Dayton Section will be there again this year with hands-on demonstrations that explore chemistry. We need volunteers to help makes this event a success. Trust us — it‘ll be fun!

To volunteer, even for just a couple of hours, contact Wayne Cook at: [email protected] or 937.259.3162.

R E S U LT S O F T H E 2 01 1 D AY T O N S E C T I O N E L E C T I O N S We received 21 ballots by the deadline. Several more arrived late but these would not have made a difference in this uncontested election. Ms. Lori Balster was elected Chair-Elect, and Dr. Wayne Cook was elected Secre-tary. Congratulations to all our newly elected officers! Prof. Suzanne Seleem succeeds to Chair and Vladimir Benin to Immediate Past Chair. Dr. Chris Tabor starts his second and final year in his term as Treasurer, while Steve Trohalaki and Rachel Jakubiak start their second years in their current terms as Councilor and Alternate Councilor, respectively. The Section owes a debt of thanks to our outgoing officers — Dr. Hilmar Koerner and Mr. James Carey — for their selfless service. The alter egos of the 2012 Dayton Section Board of Directors and our outgoing officers are pictured below.

National Chemistry Week was celebrated at three separate events in 2011. The first event took place at the Centerville Library on October 15th and the second event held on November 5th and 6th at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. All events highlighted this year’s theme of “Chemistry – Our Health, Our Future.”

At the Centerville Library experiments included a hand washing exer-cise, cold packs/hot packs, an aspirin test, sunscreen protection, and glucose testing. At the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery ten ex-periments were performed over the two-day period including those mentioned above as well as vitamin C testing, foaminess of bargain shampoos, nano-zinc oxide creams, bath bombs, and curdling milk.

For the second year now an event also took place at the Dayton Re-gional STEM School on October 20th. Volunteers Wayne Cook and Joy Haley performed pH experiments on household chemicals, endothermic and exothermic reactions, and testing sunscreen to the7th and 8th grade classes of Ms. Brittnee Lydy. A com-bined total of about 500 local children performed experiments.

We give a special thanks to all of our volunteers. At the Centerville Library, they include Wayne and Rhonda Cook, Ben Tway, Dominque Judkins, Katie Sullivan, and Joy Haley. Dayton Section members volunteering at the Boonshoft Museum include Ed Geller, Melinda Greer, Ben Tway, Chris Kanalas, Daqing Gao, Vladimir Benin, Radka Benin, Dorothy Ogden, Lisa Draughn, and Joy Haley. We are thankful for all the volunteers from the University of Dayton Chemistry Club and the Wright State University Chemistry Club. We thank Wright State in par-ticular for performing demonstrations throughout the weekend!

The winner of the Dayton Poster Contest highlighting this year’s NCW theme is Ms. Kathryn Holland from Urbana High School. She is an 11th grader in the class of Kathryn Zaborowski. Her winning submission was sent to ACS as a contender in the national contest. The Dayton Section awarded her a $25 gift card. Congratulations!

Volunteer Katie Sullivan shows how diabetic testing strips are used to determine glucose levels in … urine? URINE? OMG!! I am totally freaking out!! OK, calm down, Katie; it’s just yellow pedialyte. Good luck in med school!

Volunteer Ben Tway, showing how coated aspirin dissolves in the intestines in order to prevent stomach upset, plans further testing the morning after his next kegger. The students were disturbed by the fleakers, which are neither flask nor beaker.

A future chemist tests for glucose.

Fifty-year member Prof. John Fort-man waits patiently through Venkat’s lengthy introduction.

Fortunately, the Board remem-bered to turn off the sprinklers in our room; other Wellington Grill patrons got a tad wet.

“American Chemical Society? Why, all these years I thought I was a member of the American Ceramic Society!”

Venkat pose exudes equal measures respect, interest, and admiration, but he’s actually taking a 90-second power nap as Prof. Paul Serve accepts his 50-Year Member Award.

Sixty-year member James Webster finds tucked behind his award Venkat’s bar bill but he’s not about to be fooled by that old trick. Besides, he’d never order a Lassi, let alone five. Fifty-year member Paul Lamber-

ger reacts to hecklers. Appar-ently, our newly-elected officers can’t hold their liquor.

Fifty-year member John Zurbuchen reacts to a comment by Venkat, who later explained, “I didn’t realize that I’d said that out loud.”

On Thursday, November 17, 2011, section members numbering a score and a half gathered at the Wellington Grille to honor the new-est 50-year members — Dr. Robert A. Darrow, Prof. John J. Fortman, Mr. Paul H. Lamberger, Prof. Munson Paul Serve, and Mr. John M. Zurbuchen — as well as our new 60-year members — Ms. Mary T. Ryan and Mr. James A. Webster. Unfortunately, Dr. Darrow and Ms. Ryan were unable to attend.

Narayanan Venkat, longtime Chair of the Professional Practices Committee, presented each honoree with an ACS certificate and a plaque of recognition. After the awards, the honorees informally ad-dressed the audience. Prof. John Fortman performed some of his best known chemistry demos, and was also able to quell several complaints from attendees that their steaks were too rare.

The Dayton Section offers its sincere congratulations to all of our 50–year and 60-year members!

In her form-fitting lab coat, there was never a more alluring organic chemis-try student than Bette, even with the faint grey spots under her big, blue eyes that betrayed last night’s indul-gences. When warned that she had forgotten to add boiling chips to her round bottom flask, Bette imagines consuming a martini in one gulp, then takes five dramatic strides away from the fume hood, turns to face her TA, and says, “Fasten your seat belt. It’s going to be a bumpy DISTILLATION!

Kenny waits tables in between postdocs. Two customers – gross Wall-Street types – see Kenny’s ACS t-shirt and mock him by ordering with chemical formulas: “Bring me H-2-O,” says the first guy. The second guy says, “I’ll have H-2-O, too.” Kenny returns with their drinks. The second guy gulps his down, foams at the mouth, and keels over. “What did you bring us?” demands the first guy. Kenny says, “I brought you hydrogen hydroxide, and I brought him hydrogen
