Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are the proven way to train your workforce. Apprenticeships can make your company more effective, productive and ultimately competitive by addressing your skills gap directly, especially in the current uncertain economic climate. And with over 200 apprenticeships available in all employment sectors, from engineering to creative arts, there will be one to suit your business.

So what are apprenticeships? They are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers, which lead to national recognised qualifications.

Who are they for?You can use apprenticeships to train both new and existing employees. Free training is available to apprentices up to the age of 19.

Who runs them?Apprenticeships are designed by the Sector Skills Council (part of the Skills for Business Network), while the National Apprenticeship Service helps to fund the training.

How are apprenticeships developed?Business representatives from the relevant industry sector work with the Sector Skills Councils to develop the course content. Because they genuinely understand your business, the training will be relevant for your industry.

Young & Highly Motivated…Remember apprentices are eager, motivated, flexible and local to the company that has invested in them. An apprentice is with you because they want to be – they have made an active choice to learn on the job and a commitment to a specific career.

For more information on apprenticeships visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk or call our employer engagement team here at Southend Connexions on 01702 420290.

Facts & Figures

In September 2009 the unemployment rate among 16-24 year olds rose to 19.1%, with about 928,000 people in that age range classed as unemployed (according to ONS statistics). Here in Southend we have approximately 450 young people aged between 16 & 18 , not in employment, education or training (Correct to September 2009).

Between October 2008 and October 2009, we signed up 50 employers in Southend and advertised their vacancies for them. Of these 50, half advertised exclusively with Southend Connexions and continue to do so.

We meet over 90 young people on average every day throughout Southend, many of whom are actively seeking work.

Case Study – Danny R, 17 (Apprentice Mechanic):

School never really interested me that much, but I have always had an interest in cars. After getting 6, A-C grades at GCSE, I decided that I wanted to go straight to work. I was finding it hard looking for a job, and needed help with my CV. I went to Southend Connexions and one of the workers helped me sort out my CV and showed me a book of local vacancies. I saw the advert for an apprentice mechanic paying £95p/w and sent them my CV the same day.

Within a week, I had an interview, and the following week I started working with them. I have six months of my apprenticeship left to complete and, hopefully I will be offered a full time job when it ends. My goal is to one day run my own garage, and maybe even train apprentices of my own.
