MARINE RESERVE
Thanda Island, leased by Thanda Tanzania Limited, is deeply committed to the conservation of the region’s sea turtles, dugongs and whale sharks, as well as the preservation and rehabilitation of the Shungimbili coral reef.
Thanda Island is situated within the Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve, and Thanda’s team is partnering with the Tanzanian Marine Parks and a leading NGO, Sea Sense, on a range of marine conservation and education programmes in the region. These include research and conservation projects on sea turtles, dugongs, whale sharks, coral reefs and marine reserves.
Five species of marine turtles occur in Tanzania’s waters. These include green, hawksbill, loggerhead, olive ridley and leatherback turtles. Two species – green and hawksbill – have recently returned to nest on the Island. All are categorised by the IUCN as endangered or critically endangered species.
The whale shark, which feeds just south of Thanda Island, is the largest fish in the world. Its size, gentle nature and tendency to swim at the surface in known sites makes it a focal species for marine tourism. Whale sharks are categorised by the IUCN as vulnerable to extinction.

The open-plan living area is vast at the villa, incorporating a beautiful lounge, elegant dining room and even an aquarium! The living area flows out on to a spacious deck – here, you will find a breakfast boma, a traditional pizza oven, a barbecue, a bonfire area, a cocktail bar, and a glass rim-flow pool!
There are five bedrooms altogether, all with a king-size bed, en-suite facilities, and direct beach access! It is possible to set up extra beds for children in any of the bedrooms, and further sleeping capacity is provided within Thanda Island’s two traditional bandas. Each contains two bedrooms, making a total of 9 rooms. Extra features include an Arabian Bedouin tent, a cigar humidor, copper beach baths, Steinway guitars and an Ernest Hemingway book collection!

If you enjoy scuba diving at any level, or you would like to learn to scuba dive, this can be arranged with Mafia Island Diving, Thanda’s accredited 5-star dive partner at Chole Bay on nearby Mafia Island. All dives are done from traditional Arab dhows in the Mafia Island Marine Park, the largest marine protected area in the Indian Ocean, offering an intriguing diversity of coral reefs, five species of turtles and 400 species of enchanting reef fish. Or cruise on OVER THE RAINBOW OF LONDON to Chole Bay for an incredible private diving experience, as it too is fully equipped with its own diving equipment.

A boathouse full of equipment is yours to enjoy. Ride the trade winds in paradise on your very own sailboat or explore the coral reef in a kayak or canoe. Sailing trips on a traditional Arab fishing dhow can be arranged. A 28-foot reef runner cat, deep-sea boat is also available for you and your guests and is fully equipped for some big game fishing nearby Mafia Island. Catch and release iconic species or bring home the catch of the day for the Chef to prepare for your lunch or dinner.

Guests are welcomed aboard this 115ft/35m, four-berth classic cruise yacht for a very unique African cruising experience, where old-world elegance, nostalgic luxury and an East African Hemingway adventure is what you can expect. With only a small number of guests onboard, the entire boat is yours to enjoy as you take in the magnificent Indian Ocean sights and discover fascinating East African islands, all at slow pace.
You’ll be invited into a marine paradise of electric colours, seductive spices and sparkling waters where seabirds and turtles play. Alternatively, you may choose to laze on a deck chair with cocktail in hand as you soak up the turquoise oceans around you.

CHOLE ISLAND dates back to the 8th century when Arab traders first settled here and used it as a base, as you can see from the ancient ruins. Guests are welcomed here by the Chole Islanders who are predominantly boat-makers and farmers, growing delicious tropical fruits. The tour includes a visit to a traditional boat-maker where craftsmen carve out wooden boats and dhows by hand, not one power tool in sight.

GETTING THERE
To get to Thanda Island, guests fly directly to Julius Nyerere International
Airport in Dar es Salaam.
Upon landing, the Island team will meet you and accompany you through
customs, ensuring a smooth, quick entry into this beautiful country.
From here, you board either an 8 or 4-seater helicopter and 45 minutes later you land on Thanda Island, right at the Villa for the start of your private island adventure. You can also take a small
speedboat from Mafia Island.
