Fall has arrived and with the changing of the leaves comes the changing of the guard at ACS. There is the ACS national election for president-elect and also the local election for Chair-Elect, Secretary, and Treasurer. The local section polls open October 1st and close October 25th.

In addition to elections, we also have our major outreach events. National Chemistry week is gearing up and we hope you will take some of your time to help volunteer at one event (al-though volunteering for more would be wonder-ful). Please see the National Chemistry week section for more details.

In addition to our outreach programs, we have several events for our members lined up. There is one dinner meeting being planned for October 17th. Our speaker will be Dr. Ken Reifsnider and he will speak on “Composite Systems Durability”. In addition, we are planning on having the final “ACS @ the Movies” which will be held in early November.

R nAtionAl chemistry weekseed (sCieNCe eNriChMeNt aNd eduCatioN day) ACS-SR will celebrate National Chemis-try Week by participating in SEED (Sci-ence Enrichment and Education Day). SEED is an annual event hosted by the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center on the campus of USCA in conjunction with Aiken County Public Schools. The event celebrates innovations in science, technology, engineering, and mathemat-ics. We will be demonstrating and involv-ing students in a hands-on experiment using sodium alginate and calcium chlo-ride to create food dye beads to highlight the concepts of self-assembly, encap-sulation, and controlled release. We will also be emphasizing the importance of scale by comparing the sizes of things from galaxies to atoms, and will have a quick game with macro and magnified pictures of everyday items. Each year thousands of students show up at this free event so several volunteers (lunch and t-shirts provided) are needed for:
