Comments from the Chair I hope everyone is having an enjoyable and safe summer. I apologize for the lateness of the newsletter but we have been going through adapting to new software. We have several updates in the newsletter including awards for both the local section and a local section member! I would also like to announce that Tom Walters has agreed to take over Public Relations chair duties (in addition to his alternate Councilor position), Jonathon Duffey has agreed to become our publications editor, and David Newell will be assuming the Industrial Relations chair. We have decided to roll the Government Affairs position into the duties of the PR chair. We still have other positions that need to be filled by volunteers. Also, we are always willing to expand our current activities for new outreach efforts if you have ideas. Please let me know if you have ideas or want to serve! There are a lot of upcoming events this fall for the local section including a speaker dinner in October, NCW, and other functions. Please remember that National Chemistry Week and SEED are all great volunteering opportunities. We are trying to do a lot of events this year including both the Western Carolina and the Georgia-Carolina fairs. We really need volunteers to help us man the booths and reach out to the next generation of young chemists! We are doing several new demonstrations that have showbiz and Halloween themes. Please contact Linda Youmans-McDonald ((803)952-7885 or [email protected]) if interested. We need NCW volunteers for the following: October 9th: Setup and Poster Judging (4 people) at Georgia-Carolina State Fair 2:30-5:00

(subject to change based on fair personnel availability) October 16th: SEED (need 7 volunteers, 1 to lead) at USC-Aiken 8:30-3:30 October 16th: NCW (need 6-8 people, 1 to lead--- I have asked for Traveling Science to

demo on this date and if they do, we will still need volunteers but the TS volunteer will be the lead) at Georgia-Carolina State Fair includes free fair admission, 11:30-4:30

October 23rd: NCW (need 6-8 people) at Georgia-Carolina State Fair includes free fair admission, 11:30-4:30

October 23rd: NCW (need 6-8 people) at Western Carolina State Fair includes free fair admission, 11:30-4:30

I especially would like to thank some of our active volunteers. Linda Youmans-McDonald has been working hard organizing the ACS-SR booth at the BIT Expo and upcoming plans for NCW and Project SEED. Will James has been organizing events for the YCC. The periodic table revitalization is on track thanks to Elise Fox’s efforts but we always can use more volunteers! On another note, the Living Periodic Table display has come a long way but we still have elements looking for sponsors. Please help us find interested parties who would want to donate to this good cause. Finally, I would like to extend the condolences to the family in James W. Cleary. Jim was one of our most active attendees and an ACS member for 61 years. In honor of this, we have decided to honor Jim with element 61, Pm, on the Living Periodic Table display. -Glenn Fugate

David Hobbs named ACS Fellow in Class of 2010 ACS-SR member David Hobbs has been selected as an ACS fellow for the Class of 2010. David has been an active member of the Savannah River Section for over 25 years. During this time he has served as Chair-elect, Chair, Awards Chair and worked as an advisor to succeeding Chairs and Chair-elects. During his leadership of the local section he initiated co-sponsored meetings and other interactions with the local chapters of Sigma Xi and American Institute of Chemical Engineers as well as tours of local chemical plants. He was instrumental in helping ACS-SR organize and plan the 58th SERMACS held in Augusta, Georgia in November of 2006. While on the organizing committee his principal responsibility was leading the organization of technical programming in inorganic and nuclear chemistry. David has also been very active at the national level in the Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Division, where he has served as the Publicity and Communications chair for the past three years. Furthermore he has been very active in developing programming in the Nuclear Chemistry and Technology Division. For over a decade he has been a co-organizer for a symposium, “Analytical Chemistry in Nuclear Technology”, that has been held annually at one of the national meetings. This symposium has typically spanned 3 – 4 days in length and represented about 25% of the technical programming for the division. David is a leading, well respected scientist in nuclear waste remediation. His achievements earned him the prestigious Don Orth Award and have made him the go-to senior scientist at Savannah River National Laboratory for actinide separations and high-level waste chemistry. David serves as a mentor to younger professional staff members at the Savannah River National Laboratory as well as summer interns and postdoctoral researchers. David’s nomination was the first nomination from the Savannah River Section and the second member of the section to be named a fellow. Please help us congratulate David on his achievement.

Periodic Table Refurbishment The ACS-SR Living Periodic Table Refurbishment is still going strong. We have recently completed adding cabinetry to cover elements up to 118. As the next step, the local unit of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers will be installing LEDs and black lights in each box. We have procured a copy of “The Elements beyond Uranium” with Glenn Seaborg’s autograph, and through the DNCT, we have received a donation of a 99Tc generator from Covidien, a medical isotope manufacturer. SRNS was gracious to donate $1000 for the effort and the I&EC Division sponsored five elements, although we are still behind on the fund raising efforts. Numerous elements are still available for sponsorship (see the list below). We will have a grand unveiling ceremony in January 2011 to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry. More details to follow. If you are interested in helping out or to sponsor an available element please contact Elise Fox ([email protected], 803-507-8560).

ACS-SR Wins Chemluminary Award The Savannah River Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS-SR) has won a 2010 Chemlumiary award from the American Chemical Society for best interaction between a local section and a division. ACS-SR was recognized for their work for the Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (DNCT) during 2009 on the Revitalization of the Living Periodic Table at the Ruth Patrick Science Center. The display was developed and built by the Savannah River Section in the early 1990s using public and private donations. After 15+ years of use, the educational outreach tool has been viewed by over 1 million persons but the age and use have left the display in significant need of refurbishment and revitalization. Starting in January 2009 ACS-SR funding to be combined with public and private donations that will be used to repair the display, improve its appearance, and add interactive educational elements. It was noticed that a large portion of the Actinide and Transactinide elements did not have any objects for the display. In order to remedy the situation ACS-SR sought out the help of the Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology to help obtain items for the Periodic Table. The revitalization has proven to be a multi-year effort and is expected to wrap-up in January 2011, when an event for the grand unveiling of the revitalized Periodic Table will be held during the International Year of Chemistry. To date over $16,000 have been raised for the refurbishment, which includes $100 donations from individuals to sponsor an element and a $1000 donation from SRNS. Elise Fox is the project manager.

Speaker You Are What You Eat: Food Polyphenols Prevent Oxidative Damage and Cell Death through Metal Coordination Prof. Julia L. Brumaghim, Department of Chemistry, Clemson University Date: Thursday, October 14th, 2010 Location: Old Edgefield Grill, Edgefield SC Time: 6:30pm Reservations: Contact Tad Whiteside ([email protected]) or (803-725-8267) with the name(s) of those attending. The deadline for signing up is noon, October 11th. Directions: Old Edgefield Grill is located at 202 Penn Street, Edgefield, SC (803-637-3222) Dinner: We will be ordering from the menu, 50+ year members and students will receive $5 toward their meal. New Members attending their first event will also receive a discount for their meal – please let Tad know when you RSVP. Abstract: In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, iron and copper catalyze the formation of hydroxyl radicals that damage proteins, lipids, and DNA in cells. Because positively-charged iron and copper ions in a cell localize near negatively-charged DNA, the generated hydroxyl radicals cause DNA damage. Cell death and mutation caused by DNA damage are implicated in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and aging. As a result, much work has focused on developing antioxidant treatment strategies, and polyphenol antioxidants from teas, fruits, and vegetables are widely studied for their ability to treat and prevent disease. Although polyphenol antioxidants potentially bind iron and copper, the metal binding mechanism of antioxidant activity has been little-studied. To examine the role of metal coordination on polyphenol antioxidant activity, we use a DNA gel electrophoresis assay to determine DNA damage. Polyphenol compounds effectively inhibit iron-mediated DNA damage at biological concentrations. Additional gel electrophoresis and UV-vis experiments established that iron binding was the primary mechanism of this DNA damage inhibition. Based on these results, we developed models to predict the antioxidant efficacy of food polyphenols. Understanding this novel iron-binding antioxidant mechanism will help identify the most potent antioxidants to treat and prevent diseases caused by oxidative stress.

Obituary Dr. James (Jim) William Cleary, aged 84, of Keysville, GA, was one of the oldest active participants of ACS-SR passed away on August 25, 2010. Jim grew up in Evanston, Illinois and then attended college at Loyola University. After obtaining his bachelor's degree, he went on to graduate school at Washington State University. After graduation he worked for Phillips Petroleum, James River Corporation and then later for Dartco before finally retiring in 1998. Jim was extremely active in ACS-SR, rarely missing a local section meeting, and he will be missed for the many stories he shared with fellow members at the local section events through the years. ACS-SR is purchasing the element [Pm, element 61 for Jim’s 61 years of membership] in the living periodic table at the Ruth Patrick Science Center in his memory.
