Volume 38 Issue 6 JULY 2020
Almost ready ~ and waiting
With the completion of the latest five Darwinia Cottages expected within days, this will bring the number of Independent Living Units in Cranbrook to twelve with all of them occupied.
The units have been built as part of the Great Southern Housing Initiative supported by the GSDC which is a program jointly funded by the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions, the State Government, Shire of Cranbrook and the Darwinia Cottages Cranbrook Committee Inc.
Architect Laurence Cuthbert of H&H, Peter Northover and Trish Standish at the Shire of Cranbrook have been the joint Project Managers with constant consultation with the Darwinia Cottages Committee.
White Building Company have been the builders of the three units completed in 2016 and these five units.
The units have an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area, two large bedrooms with built in robes, a large bathroom suitable for wheelchair access, hobby room, separate laundry and additional toilet as well as substantial storage, including a storage area off the carport.
Each unit is fenced, has a water tank and areas of lawn, brick paving and pebble area for raised garden beds, pots etc.
The original four units built in the early 1980’s have been re-fenced to provide those tenants with access to the complex’s central gazebo area with power, a barbeque, table and seating so that all
Darwinia residents can get together to enjoy some morning or afternoon teas and sundowner bbqs.
On the 8th June, the Committee and some of their neighbours gathered for afternoon tea and to farewell Sylvia and Norm Lewis who have been Darwinia residents since 2016. Norm and Sylvia have made their move to Mandurah for health reasons and we wish them all the very best in their new ‘village’ which we’re sure they will enjoy - and Norm will be playing bowls as soon as the season begins. He will be missed at the Cranbrook
Sporting Club as he is a very competitive bowler and was the 2019/20 Men’s Club Champion - sadly Covid-19 restrictions prevented him from playing in the League Singles Championships with an opportunity to bring that honour back to Cranbrook once more.
News is they have settled in and the caravan is ready and
they’re making the trip north again now they can cross intra-state borders - best wishes to them both and we look forward to seeing them on their visits ‘home’.
The Darwinia Committee would like to welcome all our new tenants and wish them a long and happy stay in their new homes - there will be a flurry of activity there over the next few weeks as they begin moving in.
With our Annual General Meeting coming up in August, ’Darwinia’ would welcome new Committee members who are interested in keeping our residents in their community through the opportunity for local housing options in their retirement. Please contact Jan (0417 981 264) or Gidget (0408 461 177) for any further information.
The date of our Annual General Meeting will be in the August edition of the Cranbrook Newsletter.

Rates Did you know if you don’t pay your
property rates for three (3) consecutive
years that the Local Government can sell
your property for non-payment of rates?
Did you also know that Rates are NOT
due on the 30th June every year - they are
in fact due on different dates, depending
on which payment option you choose,
which are displayed on the bottom of
your Rates Notice.
Therefore, if the property owner doesn’t
pay their rates by these due dates, they
may be sent to Legal (unless alternative
payment arrangements are made). ALL
Legal charges are then on costed to the
Property Assessment and are the Property
owner’s responsibility to pay.

ALL HEAVY VEHICLE OPERATORS
CRANBROOK FRANKLAND EAST ROAD (NORTHERN TWO MILE), ROCKWELL ROAD, BRIDGE STREET
and GORDON STREET in CRANBROOK
These roads are closed to Heavy Vehicles (over 4.5T) indefinitely. Only vehicles that are making a pick up or delivery

An alternate route is via the Albany Highway Great Southern Highway intersection as illustrated.
The restriction imposed on any Heavy Vehicle (over 4.5t) is due to safety issues associated with the number of Heavy

It would be appreciated if you could adhere to the Shire’s request and use the alternate route. This will be monitored by

School Holiday Road Safety
After a challenging and different school term students and teachers are looking forward to the School Holidays that will start on Friday 3rd July 2020.
This means for the first 2 weeks of July there will be more children, walking, riding and scooting around local streets as well as more people travelling long distances for their holidays and therefore Roadwise are asking all drivers to take extra care during this period.
Carl Beck, Great Southern Roadwise Co-ordinator, said “drivers on local roads are encouraged to slow down especially around areas like playgrounds and skate parks where children are likely to congregate. Drivers heading off on a long trip are reminded to ensure they are well rested and take regular breaks to avoid the dangers of driving tired”
In addition given the likelihood of wet weather
during the holidays drivers are also reminded to
help keep everyone safe and they should drive with
their lights on at all times, slow down, drive to the
conditions and
leave extra
distance between
themselves and
the vehicle in front.

HOUSTON (DARYL JOHN)
Deepest Sympathy from the Cranbrook community to Pat and her daughters, Joanne, Sharon and Kim and their families on the sudden death of their Husband, Father and Grandfather Daryl who passed away suddenly on 8.6.2020. Daryl and his brothers Bob and Geoff were all accomplished footballers who played for Cranbrook in the 60’s and early 70’s
Patricia Martinson (nee Palmer) passed away in Bunbury on the 27th May aged 103 years. Patsy was born in Cranbrook, the third daughter of William (Jack) and Marjorie Palmer who arrived with Jack’s parents John and Ann Palmer and their adult family from Devon, UK in 1913 when they took up a property on the Salt River Road which they named Old Lenham. John B. Palmer represented the Cranbrook district on the Plantagenet Road Board in the years prior to the establishment of the Cranbrook Road Board in 1926.
Jack’s younger brother Jim Palmer had arrived in Albany the previous year with his fiancé Bessie Pope and her parents William and Elizabeth Pope and their family and Jim encouraged the Palmer’s to follow to take up good farming land around Cranbrook. Jack and Marjorie farmed at the Gordon River before purchasing a property in Kojonup and Patsy attended Albany Senior High School where she excelled academically and in her chosen sport, hockey. She won a Hackett Scholarship to UWA and was the first female to graduate from UWA with a Science Degree and Teaching qualifications.
The following excerpts from Hockey Australia (John Sanders) were read at Patsy’s Funeral. At Albany High School, Patsy was a teammate of May Pearce (Campbell), WA’s best known player of that era and with Peggy Keeble, these three went on to represent Western Australia in the All-Australian Carnival in Sydney in 1936 and at the conclusion of her first All Australian Tournament, Patsy was named in the 1936 All Australian Team. She was selected in two Blue Ribbon teams for Australia in 1936 and 1938 – the Blue Ribbon team was prestigious and was made up of the best players from the National Championships and would now be described as a ‘virtual’ team. In 1938, Patsy played for the WA team at Subiaco Oval against the touring English/Scots team.
Patsy’s teaching career took her to Bunbury where she met her husband Stan Martinson and raised their two boys and she continued teaching until retirement at Bunbury Senior High School.
LOFTY CAVANAGH Lofty was the best axe man around and he could cut 200 jam posts with an axe in a day and when he took his sons to work with him, his expectations were pretty high. Malcolm said that his brother Ron who was three years Malcolm’s senior was expected to cut 100 posts or better and Malcolm was expected to cut at least 80.
He explained how his Dad would select a tree, stand alongside it and with a right hand swing, scarfe that side of the tree without moving and then he would change to his left hand and chop the three till it fell. He has seen his dad cut a Redgum tree which was 2ft across the centre of the stump.
He always had water to drink with him and approximately every half hour he would sit down, have a drink and sharpen his axe.
The log was cut into the require lengths as sometimes the farmer would want them 6ft long and sometimes 5ft 8ins long. Once they were cut into lengths they would then be split with a wedge and a sledge hammer.
I was curious and asked Malcolm “Did the logs always split easy and what happened when they would not split?” “Blind Freddy could pick a tree” he said “You never picked one when the bark ran in circles, you only picked one when the bark was running up and down.”
Loft was asked once if he ever considered entering a log chopping competition and in Lofty’s own words he said “those fella’s only use green Jarrah and it’s just like cuttin’ hot butter.”
Loft and Jack Betts were good friends and then there was the story of Jack returning home to Tenterden in his old Jeep. Now Jack was never going to get picked up by the law for speeding and it is doubtful that his top speed ever exceeded 30mph but on this particular occasion he was slightly inebriated and was having trouble negotiating the road and ended ‘arse up in the gutter’. Mrs Cavanagh, Malcolm’s mother who lived in Tenterden could see this upturned vehicle down the road and sent Malcolm down to investigate. What he found was Jack’s Jeep lying on its side and Jack still sitting in the driver’s seat hanging on to the steering wheel, probably wondering why it was taking so long to get home.
Malcolm went home to get the tractor and he said that when he got back he attached ropes to the vehicle and tractor and successfully righted the jeep with the driver still in situ. He then proceeded to tow Jack home and got him just through his gate and noticed that there was oil leaking from the vehicle and insisted that the vehicle should not be driven again until it had been checked out by Bill Moore who ran the local garage opposite the Tenterden Store on Albany Highway. He knew that Jeck never checked his vehicles, however the jeep was checked by Mr Moore and given the thumbs up for Jack to drive again. Dot Kleemann

CRANBROOK MEN’S SHED
We are just about back to business as usual – with the exception of a couple of additional requirements to protect us all from Covid 19.
The boys are continuing with the completion of the dust extraction
unit and Laury has set up the wood lathe ready for use and Kevin has added a flash measuring guide to the mitre saw. I feel it won’t be long before the woodworking boys start making some dust and wood chips in the Shed again.
As you may have noticed we have had the old asbestos fence removed and will soon be installing a replacement metal panel fence, we just need to organise some posts and then we can start digging the holes and installing the posts and rails.
The workshop fire has been burning most days we are at the Shed and we have made good use of the reverse cycle air conditioner unit we had installed earlier this year to keep the meeting room nice an warm.
The Cranbrook Community Men’s Shed, was established to provide a venue for all men living or visiting the Cranbrook Shire with a place to feel welcome to visit and participate in the various activities offered. Having said that, we would encourage any men from our “Community” to come along on any Thursday for a look around and a cuppa. We have had a change in our Thursday meeting timetable, we still meet on the first Thursday of the month, however, now we are in the winter months we will be starting a bit later, with our chef Mal, serving fabulous toasted egg and bacon sandwiches at 0800 followed by a cup of tea or coffee before the meeting which starts at 0830.
As the financial year is drawing to a close we are planning for 20/21 and will be holding our AGM on Thursday August the 6th. For more info please contact John De Burgh 0419 957 962 or Mal Humble 0410 568 519

Operation Christmas Child comes under the umbrella of Samaritan’s Purse a huge organisation that aids in Disaster Relief situations.
From September 2019 – March 2020, Samaritans Purse volunteers helped communities in Fire ravaged Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, to get back
on their feet, by clearing debris, cutting up and removing fallen trees and branches, and sifting through the ashes to find personal belongs. They also distributed Fire Recovery Kits, which included shovels, rakes, hammers, gloves, face masks and overalls.
They have given supplies and assisted and cared for Ebola Patients in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Relief for Syrian Refugees.
Relief for Cyclone Victims in Mozambique, Rural areas were swallowed up by flooding, and people lost everything, Samaritans Purse airlifted 144 tones of aid to the hardest hit areas.
They rushed to the aid of Hurricane Victims in the Bahamas, and set up an Emergency Field Hospital, which became the only working large scale medical facility in the northern Bahamas.
More recently Samaritan’s Purse set up an emergency Hospital in Central Park in New York to help with the demands of the Coronavirus, they had a 10 bed ICU ward as well as other wards.
This organisation has a wonderful privilege of being able to meet and assist people with huge needs.

Thank you to all parents for your assistance with the pick up and drop off of students. This is working very well and step by step we are moving back to our usual routines. Playgroup has started
back up again which is great to see. I expect there to be another Department update soon; at the end of the term or during the holiday break. I will let you know when this comes through.
National Thank you to Cleaners Day. On Monday 15 June, cleaners around the country were recognised for the marvellous effort in keeping schools and workplaces safe. Without their hard work and dedication, our school would not be able to function safely. Our school classrooms, playgrounds, work spaces and student resources have been cleaned at regular intervals throughout the day for the entire term.
This along with attention to handwashing, has allowed our school to function as usual. They usually start early and work late in the afternoon/evening and are often unseen by our students. It was a great opportunity to thank our cleaning staff with the students present. I would like to thank Vicky Williamson and Perin Mulchay for coming along to our assembly and thanking our cleaners on behalf of our parents. Perin read out a beautiful letter about the important role our cleaners perform for us.
2021 Kindergarten Enrolments Enrolments for 2021 Kindergarten for Cranbrook School are open. About the Working with Warriors®
Podcast Welcome to our new Working with Warriors® Podcast. These podcast episodes are based on conversations around men’s wellbeing and health from our Working with Warriors® education sessions. The Team at RMHI will host, participate, and produce the podcasts, occasionally having guests for specific topical issues.
Our vision is to empower men and communities to take responsibility for our wellbeing and health. We promote the requirement that it is important for all blokes to know and understand the story behind our identity and what it is that makes us an individual. Mateship, empathy, and appropriate use of humour is the key to connectedness in all the work we do.
I hope you enjoy the podcasts and remember our slogan… before it all gets too much…Talk to a Mate!!®
These podcasts are not medical advice. They are conversations aiming to equip everyone with knowledge to better understand some of the logic that underpins masculine behaviour especially regarding a man’s approach to his wellbeing and health.
The short podcasts (10 to 15 minutes each) are now available to listen via our website or on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and numerous other podcast directories.
Hosts/Conversations: Owen Catto, Terry Melrose, Glen Dunkerton and Tom Hayes.
Recording and Sound Production: Tom Hayes and Glen Dunkerton with music by Refractory Road.
What is a Mental Health Care Plan? The term mental health encompasses all aspects of our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, it affects how we feel, think and interact with the world around us. It’s important to acknowledge that “dealing with life’s challenges and changes” can be difficult at times and place our mental health and wellbeing under pressure. The effects of this will be different for all of us, as we all have an innate but varying capacity to cope and deal with these pressures. A Mental Health Care Plan is designed for someone struggling with their mental health and wellbeing or experiencing a mental health disorder as diagnosed by a doctor. This mental health treatment plan is about YOU and your GP having a conversation and both agreeing that you need additional support. The mental health treatment plan is written out by a GP and identifies what type of extra support you need. It is really about patient and doctor agreeing on what is needed to help you achieve your goals and to support your recovery journey. A Mental Health Care Plan may include: Referral to a psychologist, counsellor or other mental / allied
health professional. A discussion around other types of support or strategies to help
you. Review of current medication or the prescription of new
medication. Other health checks or blood tests to explore other physical
health issues.
Another major benefit of a Mental Health Care Plan is that it comes under the Better Access initiative, which entitles you to a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions with a mental health professional. The current guidelines do not cover all 10 session in one year. Your plan will cover you for 6 sessions, following that you can discuss with your GP whether the additional 4 sessions would be of benefit via a Mental Health Care Plan review and additional referral.
Some things to remember in context to a Mental Health Care Plan:
When booking an appointment with your GP ask for a longer consult or mention the reason for the booking (struggling with mental health / discuss care plan etc.)
Sometimes there can be waiting periods to see psychs / counsellors. Discuss alternate support options until you can get an appointment. This may include family, friends, support lines or other services. Options can be limited in rural and remote areas.
Like any plan, it gives us direction, but it’s important it is actively reviewed through follow-up appointments with your GP and check-ins to monitor progress.
Recovery from mental health and wellbeing challenges and / or mental illness is an ongoing process and is often referred to as the recovery journey. When we can seek help, talk about, normalise and work through our mental health and wellbeing problems, the boundaries of our comfort zone grow and expand. This is also how we grow as individuals and is the true meaning of resilience! Working with Warriors® Podcast Series. These podcasts launched on the 19th June 2020 are based on conversations around men’s wellbeing and health from our “Working with Warriors”® education sessions. These short podcasts regarding a man’s approach to his wellbeing and health are now available to listen via our website or on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and numerous other podcast directories.
