Further shaping the future ofhealthcare in Coweta County!Piedmont Physicians Groupwelcomes the PAPP Clinic!

PAPP Clinic and Piedmont Physicians

Form PartnershipNewnan, Ga. (August 4, 2011)—On July 29, 2011, PAPP Clinic joined Piedmont Physicians Group. PAPP Clinic, which signed an exclusive letter of intent to pursue an affiliation with Piedmont Healthcare in February, is a multi-specialty phy-sician group with six locations, 37 physicians in 11 medical specialties, and close to 250 employ-ees. Prior to joining PAPP, Piedmont Physicians Group currently had 11 office locations in Coweta County with 18 primary care physicians and spe-cialists.

“Since 1919, Papp Clinic and its physicians have developed a deep understanding of the healthcare needs of this community,” said Stan W. Smith, M.D., president of PAPP Clinic. “To-gether as part of Piedmont Physicians Group, we will continue to provide the quality care we are known for and work towards shaping the future of healthcare for area residents.”

Since early 2007 when Piedmont Healthcare welcomed Piedmont Newnan Hospital to its fami-ly of providers, Piedmont has worked to grow and expand hospital and physician services, improv-ing healthcare access and options for community members closer to home. With construction on a new hospital facility on Poplar Road at I-85, Pied-mont Newnan Hospital leadership anticipates opening by spring 2012.

“Quality healthcare closer to home is a com-mon goal of both Piedmont Physicians Group and the PAPP Clinic,” said Berney Crane, president and chief executive officer for Piedmont Medical Care Corporation, the administrative parent com-pany of Piedmont Physicians Group. “The PAPP Clinic partnership combines the best of both our organizations and is sure to play a vital role in providing for the daily healthcare needs for this community for many years to come.”

Physicians at PAPP Clinic are now seeing new patients and accept most major insurance plans. For more information on Piedmont Physicians, visit piedmontphysicians.org.

Piedmont Heart Institute Enrolling Patients in Clinical Trial Replacing Heart Valves Without SurgeryAtlanta, Ga. (August 3, 2011)—Piedmont Heart Institute Physicians are currently accepting patients for the Medtronic CoreValve® U.S. Clinical Trial. Piedmont Hospital is one of 40 hospitals across the United States to participate in the trial to evaluate a revolutionary non-surgical, less-invasive procedure as a treatment alternative to open-heart surgery for patients with severe aortic stenosis.

Patients who have severe aortic stenosis as well as a predicted high risk of requiring aortic valve surgery may be eligible to participate in the clinical trial. For more information about the CoreValve trial and eligibility, visit clinicaltrials.gov and search for the CoreValve trial.

“With an estimated 5 percent of those over the age of 65 experiencing some form of aortic stenosis, there is significant need for new treatment options that do not involve invasive surgery,” said Piedmont principal investigator Vivek Rajagopal, M.D., an interventional car-diologist with Piedmont Heart Institute Physicians. “As the population ages, the need for this procedure will continue to grow.”

According to an abstract published in the European Heart Journal in 2003, worldwide, approximately 300,000 people have been diagnosed with this condition (100,000 in the

United States), and approximately one-third of these patients are deemed high risk for open-heart surgery, the only therapy with significant clinical effect that is currently available in the United States.

For trial participants randomly selected to receive the CoreValve System, physicians chan-nel a catheter (thin tube) with a porcine, prosthetic valve through a small opening in the patient’s femoral artery to reach the heart. The physician guides the CoreValve System to the aortic valve, where it self-expands to replace the diseased aortic valve; the procedure is completed without open-heart surgery or surgical removal of the native valve.

In the United States, the CoreValve System will not be commercially available until the successful completion of this clinical trial and approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Adminis-tration (FDA). The CoreValve System received CE (Conformité Européenne) Mark in Europe in 2007.

For more information or to be considered as a participant in the trial, contact the Pied-mont Heart Institute at 404-605-5003 or email [email protected].

The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

The other day I saw an ad in the newspaper by one of the banks located in our community. It was touting the merits of “mo-

bile banking”. Via text, web, or phone app, you can check your balance, pay your bills or transfer money – anywhere, anytime! This must be a wonderful thing for busy people on the go. If I had the dexterity to text, or owned a device which had some sort of app(lication?), I may want to go that route, too. It does, however, seem somewhat impersonal, as I would probably be known at the bank as #E64611JW.

The computer may even decide to “get personal” with me and add “Mr.” in front of those numbers.

One of the pleasures of doing busi-ness in Coweta County is being welcomed into a frequently visited establishment where the employ-ees know me by name. At the bank, for instance, I like to say “hello” to the friendly people working there. We know each other from many years of business relationship and they feel almost like family to me. Scott Wilson, Founder of Bank of Coweta, used to star in his own TV commercials saying something like, “Courtesy, good manners and friendly service have not gone out of style at our bank”. His positive and encouraging personal-ity must have rubbed off on his employees because, after about 40 years or so, the attitude there remains the same. And it’s not just BOC. Most well run companies know the value of personal relationships; whether a bank, restaurant, dry cleaners, auto mechanic or retail store. Friendly service creates value and gets (and keeps) customers.

So, inasmuch as I understand the value of modern technology in service companies, I think I’ll keep on going, in person, with my little deposits and payments, saying “how are you?” to the familiar faces I know. It also gives me a chance to leave the latest copy of The Coweta Shopper and maybe catch up on some of the news around town.

Until next time, I am,

(Mr.) E64611JW

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

(NAPSI)—It may come as a surprise to many, but the laundry doesn’t have to be a dark or boring space.Stephen Saint-Onge, author of “No Place Like Home,” has come up with a few tips on turning your laundry area into a place where you like to spend time.

Says Saint-Onge, “You want to end up with a laundry area that you love going into—instead of feeling like you are stuck doing chores—and this can be done cre-atively and without breaking the bank. These small changes will make the laundry

process more enjoyable overall.”

• Accessorize away. Find fun things to put in the room, such as matching, color-ful storage bins and baskets, and area rugs with vivid patterns. To create visual moments on counters, add coordinating canisters for detergents or other cleaning products. Make the space stylish while still keeping the room practical for everyday use.

• Light up your life. Make sure you have proper lighting. Don’t use harsh fluorescent light-bulbs in the laundry room. Use lighting that will warm up the space and make it more comfortable. Easy-to-install halogen track lights are great for direct-ing light on to work areas. Think about nice pen-dant lights over a “folding counter” or island to add some visual interest to the room.

• Color a closet. You can even have a lovely laun-dry room in a closet when you choose a color you love. This can be a great place to put a color that you wanted to use—such as a darker tone or a vi-brant color—but didn’t want to use in the more “public” rooms of your home. Complement a big pop of wall color with a stackable front-loading laundry pair in a more neutral shade such as the Whirlpool Duet in Lunar Silver.

• Bring in some sound. Having a small sound system or TV in the space can make the time spent there more enjoyable.

• Make the space. Even if you don’t have an ac-tual room open in your home for a laundry room, you can create one in a corner of the kitchen or some other area. Add chic storage pieces that can also be used as coun-tertops. Bring in some visual detail on the walls by hanging family photos or displaying your child’s artwork for an instant laundry room makeover. The point is to surround yourself with things you love so doing the laundry can feel more like good clean fun.

Preparing Your Vacant House To SellExperts agree, home buying is an emotional decision and a vacant house doesn’t ignite the same emotion as a furnished home. Online photos are the teasers that will get a buyer in-terested in your property. They need something to connect too on an emotional level in order to get them excited about a house and photos of vacant rooms don’t do it for them. If a buyer doesn’t have amazing photos to view, your listing could be eliminated from their must see list.

Vacant properties must be merchandised and marketed just like any other product. Here are a few tips to help get you started.

Curb Appeal - Make sure you have it! If you have relocated to another property, chances are, your vacant house is showing some signs of neglect. The lawn still needs regular trimming, flower beds need the weeds pulled, driveway, walkways and porches need to be swept regularly. A potential buyer may drive past the house before scheduling an appointment to see the inside. If the outside looks shabby, they’ll never even ask your realtor for the opportunity to visit.

Eliminate Odors & Pests - Make sure the carpets are clean and odor free and that you haven’t left behind some unwanted critters for potential buyers. If you have re-moved a family pet, be sure to have the vacant property treated for fleas. Once pets are removed, fleas will continue to multiply and will attack the next warm body they find. You want buyers to remember your house in a good way. You don’t want them to remember your property as “the house with the fleas”.

Make the Interior Welcoming - Replace burned out light bulbs and let in as much natural light as possible. Clean all the windows (inside and outside) and clean dust and cobwebs from permanent fixtures. Leave a few lamps on a timer to go on and off through-out the day.

Furnish & Accessorize the Key Rooms - The hardest part about staging a home that is vacant is making it look interesting. With no furniture, the buyers have no sense of size and proportion of your rooms. They rush right through your house since there’s nothing to slow down their pace and no place to sit down. Make arrangements with a home staging consultant to work with a few pieces of furniture and accessories that you are willing to leave behind until the house sells. Or have them arrange furniture and accessory rentals until you sell. Furnishing and accessorizing a home properly can have a huge impact on your potential to sell. You have the option of hiring a professional stager or doing the work yourself. Either way, the home needs to look as wonderful as possible or it may never sell.

Do The Math - Studies show that homes that vacant homes that are staged before they go on the market sell, on average within 45 days. Homes that were NOT staged prior to going on the market were unsold, on average for 277 days. Use this simple formula to determine how much you will save by staging your home or listing before putting it on the market:

As a challenge, go online to one of the many property searching sites and take a look at the online photos. Now compare the vacant properties to the professionally staged proper-ties. There’s a big difference, isn’t there?

Buyers need to have the spaces identified for them and you want them to walk into a space and “try it on for size” and it is difficult to get a “good feeling” in a vacant room. Buying a new home is an emotional experience and you want your prospective buyers to have that “good feeling” in your vacant property.

Mortgage + Expenses (utilities, etc.) = Monthly Expenses

Monthly Expenses x 9 Months = Cost To List House Un-staged(Average Time Un-staged)

Savings: Expenses x 7 Months - Staging Fee = SAVINGS (Average Time on Market Reduced) If You Stage Your House First!

Note: if you have a price reduction you can also add that into the loss you are taking by listing a property un-staged.

Plants For Fall ColorSchool has started and we begin to think of football, fall festivals,

Powers Crossroads, the County Fair, and a fresh look for our gardens. There are a host of plants — trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and vines that show wonderful blooms or foliages or berries from Septem-ber to November. August is a good time to take stock and decide what to add in our gardens. Visit plant nurseries and public gardens to see plants in their Fall splendor.

Trees with lovely fall color include: Dogwood, Japanese Maple, Ginkgo, Service Berry, Redbud, Crepe Myrtle, Sassafras, and Su-mac and Crab Apple.

Shrubs with beautiful foliage and hips or berries are: Oakleaf Hydrangea, Viburnum, Calli-carpa, Nandina, and Ninebark, Pyracantha, Japanese Barberry and Forsythia and Rosa Rugo-sa.

Vines to use for fall color such as Boston Ivy, Virginia Creeper, Bit-tersweet, Sweet Autumn Clematis, and Silver Lace Vine add a nice ver-tical touch as does Climbing Hydrangea.

Perennials offer so many choices for fall gardens: Sedum, Rud-beckia, Swamp Sunflowers, Goldenrod, Artemesia, Chrysanthemums,

Dahlias, Asters, Blue Salvia, Rus-sian Sage, Crocus, Spider Lilly, Joe-Pyeweed, Yarrow, Queen Anne’s Lace, Toad Lilly, Japanese Anemone and Blackeyed Susans and the Confederate Rose.

Ornamental grasses look won-derful now too.

Annuals to add to fall designs include: Castorbean, Ornamen-

tal Kale, Ornamental Cabbage, Pansies, Celosia, Violas, and Snap-dragons, and lettuces and parsley.

Produce offers a chance to decorate in our fall gardens, on porches and decks and steps. Pumpkins of all sizes and in several colors are available. Gourds and squashes come in many interesting shapes and colors. Corn stalks, okra pods, cattails, and colorful berries and foli-ages can add color, texture and contrast.

The possibilities are endless!

Bridging The Past To The Present

(NAPSI)—An exciting and fast-growing hob-by enjoyed by millions worldwide could be your route to learning more about yourself and your family.

Tracing back your family history as far as possible into the past and finding new living relatives in the present can be a re-warding experience, introducing you to family members you never knew and help-ing you learn about your ancestors and what they may mean to you today.

To help you on this journey, the most popular family net-work on the Web, w w w . m y h e r i t a g e .com, has a new and free advanced tech-nology that can au-tomatically discover long-lost relatives and ancestors. Called Smart Matching, it’s a unique search tech-nology that discovers matches between the people in your family tree and more than 800 million people in 19 million other fam-ily trees around the world. Smart Match-ing can help everyone, from beginners to ad-vanced genealogists.

The technology is so-phisticated enough to overcome differences in spelling, phonetics and relationships that may exist between the trees. You can confirm or reject any matches and discuss them with family members. It works in real time as you enter new information and you will be notified by e-mail of new discoveries made by the sys-tem. The site’s huge global reach and support of 38 languages help you find and reunite with family members all around the world.

For example, David Greenberg, a myheritage.com user from Buffalo, N.Y., had been exploring his family history for over 40 years when a Smart Match reunited him with his long-lost cousin, whom he believed had perished during World War II. Another user, Jeff Ausmus from

Michigan, built his family tree and through a Smart Match discovered that one of his friends from high school was, in fact, his cousin.

Learn More

All it takes is a quick visit to myheritage.com to begin building your family tree online for free—then sit back and let Smart Matching dis-cover relatives for you. The site also helps you keep in touch with fam-ily and preserve special family photos and memories. The site is free of ads and spyware and all data is private and secure.

What’s In Your Garage?Meet Gene Chester

In 1963, Gene Chester left the family farm in Statesboro and came rolling into Newnan driving a brand new Chevrolet Corvair. And not just any corvair, but a Super-charged, “Spyder” convertible! He had applied to Sears, and a posi-tion was available in Newnan and LaGrange. Gene chose the Newnan store, which was located at the Greenville Street Shopping Center. (The only shopping center!)

The Corvair was produced by General Motors from 1960-69 and was Detroit’s answer to the Volkswagen Beetle. Its unique feature was a rear mounted, air cooled engine - unheard of in Ameri-can-made automobiles at that time. It was also light and small compared to the behemoth, big finned “land yachts” of the 60’s. Gene’s Corvair has an auto-matic transmision with a little lever on the dash labeled “forward - neutral- re-verse”.

About 25 years ago, he purchased this beautiful 1966 Corvair convertible from Coweta Shopper publisher, Joe Williams. Gene has re-stored the car over the years and it looks as though it could be sitting on the “Showroom Floor”! He also owns another red 1966 Corvair. The other car in the photo is a 1966 VW convertible which is in excellent condition. Genes wife, Pat, was quick to say, “This Volkswagen is my car!”

Gene doesn’t have as much time for old cars now, as his interests have again turned to cattle farming. He has been a long time mem-ber of the Newnan Ki-wanis Club and is a member of The First Baptist Church. Gene and Pat, who live on Corinth Rd., have four children and 10 grand-children.

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

The term premises liability is a broad one and in Georgia encompasses a number of dif-ferent types of cases. These cases fall into the categories of slip & fall, trip & fall, negligent security, and nuisance causes. Today’s article is reviewing the areas of slip & fall and trip & fall. It should first be noted that just because you fell on somebody’s property in Georgia, it does not mean that it was legally their fault. For example, Georgia has the open and obvious doctrine which means that if you tripped over a large pallet that was easily visible, chances are the property owner would not be at fault.

The second issue to consider is the legal status of the injured person. A trespasser onto somebody’s property would have comparatively few rights when injured on that property. A landowner owes the trespasser only the duty not to willfully or wantonly injure them. One of the key exceptions to that rule pertains to children in what is known as the attractive nuisance doctrine. An example would be a neighborhood swimming pool where it could be foreseen that kids like to swim and that they might trespass.

The next category of persons on a property would be that of a licensee. The owner of the property is subject to liability to a licensee for injuries caused by a condition on the property if the owner knows or has reason to know the condition, should realize that it involves unreasonable risk of harm, and should expect that the licensee will not realize the danger. The property owner should exercise reasonable care to make the condition safe and warn the licensee of the condition and risk involved where the licensee does not know or would have not reason to know of the risk.

The most protected category of person is that of the invitee. The prop-erty owner owes the invitee the duty of ordinary care in keeping the prem-ises and area of approach safe. The invitees would include shoppers, peo-ple doing work on the property at the owner’s invitation, and anyone else there for the mutual benefit of the owner and the guest.

black dog or cat during the national “Back in Black,” adoption promo-

tion. Adoption fees for black animals (or mostly black animals) are 50 per-

cent off!

Newnan Coweta Humane society is holding a “Back in Black,” promo-

tion between Monday, Aug. 15 and Saturday, Sept. 17 to highlight adorable,

adoptable black dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. It is part of 34-day promo-

tion across the United States being supported by national animal welfare

organization Best Friends Animal Society®.

“Rescue groups and shelters across the country know black cats and dogs

are often incredibly friendly and loving, sometimes really silly, they can

be your best hiking buddy or a real lap baby … they each have their own

personality. Unfortunately, they get overlooked. By participating in this

national promotion and featuring only black animals -- and cutting adop-

tion fees in half -- we are hoping people will take a second look and get to

know these characters for the wonderful four-footed family members they

can be,” said LouAnn Jones, President of Newnan Coweta Humane Society.

To meet Newnan Coweta Humane Society’s ebony charmers visit www.NCH-

Srescue.org, or for national listings go to www.backinblack.bestfriends.org.

This adoption event is part of Best Friends Animal Society’s lofty, but reach-

able goal of No More Homeless Pets®, which aims to end the killing of dogs

and cats in America’s shelters. Newnan Coweta Humane Society is a partici-

pating member of the No More Homeless Pets® Network, a program of Best

Friends Animal Society, offers help and support to animal rescue groups

that save lives in their communities.

Volunteer to Spot Storms in CowetaCoweta County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service are

pleased to present a SKYWARN Storm Spotter class scheduled for Sep-tember 7, 2011 at 7 pm at the Coweta County Fairgrounds. The class will be taught by a National Weather Service meteorologist and is open to volunteers with an interest in public service, a responsibility for protecting others or access to communications systems like HAM radio.

To register, contact Coweta County Emergency Management Director Jay Jones at [email protected] or 770-254-2650.

What is SKYWARN®?

The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many Americans. To obtain critical weather information, NO-AA’s National Weather Service (NWS), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, established SKYWARN® with partner organizations. SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local com-munities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.

Although SKYWARN® spotters provide essential infor-mation for all types of weather hazards, the main re-

sponsibility of a SKYWARN® spotter is to identify and describe severe local storms. In the average year, 10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods and more than 1,000 tornadoes occur across the United States. These events threatened lives and property.

Since the program started in the 1970s, the information provided by SKYWARN® spotters, coupled with Doppler radar technology, improved satellite and other data, has enabled NWS to issue more timely and accurate warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods.

SKYWARN® storm spotters are part of the ranks of citizens who form the Nation’s first line of defense against severe weather. There can be no finer reward than to know that their efforts have given communities the precious gift of time--seconds and minutes that can help save lives.

Who is Eligible?

NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service and access to communi-cation, such HAM radio, to join the SKYWARN® program. Volunteers include po-lice and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens. Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches, nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting others are also encour-aged to become a spotter.
