Is It Time to MakeHome
Improvements?
Q: I’ve been holding off on redoing the bathrooms in myhouse because of worries about the economy and whethermy wife and I would be laid off. Now we’re in a disagreement:She wants to redo the bathrooms, but I still don’t want to riskspending money. What do you think? Is it worth it? — Wor-ried in Washington state
A: Well, the home-improvement industry is anxious to haveyou believe that it’s time to take the plunge and spendmoney on home renovations. DiggersList says that industryestimates point to homeowners in the U.S. spending twiceas much money this year — $270 billion — on remodelingprojects as they did in 2009.
That’s all well and good, but the story is different for eachhomeowner. If you’re not sure about your company’s situa-tion and whether you’ll continue to be gainfully employed inthe near future, yeah, you may want to hold off.
At the same time, some renovations just need to get done. Ifthere is a functional problem with the bathrooms — theplumbing needs work, the bathtub or toilet is leaking — thenspend some money. If it’s more cosmetic, talk it over with thewife, and sit down together to figure out how much moneyyou are both comfortable spending on the renovation.
You could compromise by redoing just one bathroom thisyear, and the other bathroom next year. Or you could bothpromise not to splurge on unnecessary items like gold-plat-ed fixtures. But creating a renovation budget and workingtogether to come in at or under the limit will help break theimpasse.
HOME TIP: The cost of a bathroom renovation varies wide-ly depending on several factors, but can be as low as $6,500.(Source: doityourself.com)

Coweta County is a wonderful place to live,
work, and enjoy life; and I feel fortunate to be a
part of it. Our community has grown in the past
years creating both challenges and opportunities.
We finally have the goods and services available,
right here, to support our lifestyles without hav-
ing to go out of town to spend our money.
Owning The Coweta Shopper has given me the opportunity to get to know some
of the people who provide those goods and services here and to learn what it takes to
keep Coweta County economically healthy. One of the most important things we can
do, I believe, is to buy locally, investing in our community to keep it strong.
Go with me now on two theoretical journeys following the money we spend. The
first trip starts when a merchant runs an ad in The Coweta Shopper offering tires at a
good value. A reader sees the ad and buys the tires, resulting in a profit for the busi-
ness. The tire shop pays its employee who then spends his money at a clothing store
for a new suit. The clothing store uses some of its profits to build a much needed new
addition. The building contractor buys a new truck at a
local dealership who pays sales and inventory taxes to
the city and county. The county pays a salary to the
sheriff, who not only keeps Coweta a safe place to live,
but was perhaps the person who saw the Shopper ad
and bought the tires. The money continues to circu-
late, creating jobs and opportunities throughout our
community.
In the second hypothetical money journey, a per-
son needing tires sees an ad on the Internet offering a discount from a store in Texas.
He perceives it as being a good value (until a warranty claim is needed!) and has the
tires shipped to his home in Coweta County. That money is gone, never to return!
The cycle has ended as far as the economic health of our community is concerned.
The above examples are, of course, simplistic and there are many other things
which must be done to make Coweta County a great place to live. They do, however,
make a good case for “buying locally” for the good of the entire community. You may
have heard the old saying “money talks”. Lets not allow ours to say “good bye”.
As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make the Coweta
Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.
You’ll be seeing a lot more of us now!

Truex Likes New Ride With Waltrip Racing
Martin Truex Jr., once knownfor his friendship and affiliationwith Dale Earnhardt Jr., is nowmaking a name for himself in theNo. 56 Toyota of Michael WaltripRacing.
After winning the Busch (nowNationwide) Series champi-onships in 2004 and ‘05, Truexmade the step up to Sprint Cup andspent four seasons at Dale Earn-hardt Inc., which eventuallybecame Earnhardt Ganassi Rac-ing. He made the Chase for theSprint Cup in 2007, the year he wonhis only Cup race, to date, at Dover International Speedway.
This year Truex has moved into Chase contention in his first season at MWR, where hehas been paired with veteran crew chief Pat Tryson.
“We’ve just been steady as a race team, doing all the things we need to do to get pointsand finish races,” said Truex. “There have been a few races where we’ve had really goodcars, and a few races where we were off but still managed to get good finishes, and that’swhy we’re sitting here (in Chase contention).
“Pat (Tryson) and all the guys on the (sponsor) NAPA team have done an awesome job.I feel like the last month, month and a half, we’re starting to gel and figure out our racecars, find some speed and know where to go to get that speed when we need it. I’ve beenvery happy with that and still continue to work on our stuff to try to get better.”
Before making the move to MWR and Toyota, Truex had a close relationship with hisprevious crew chief, Kevin “Bono” Manion, who now works with Daytona 500 winnerJamie McMurray. He compared Tryson with Manion.
“They’re different in a lot of ways, but I wouldn’t say they’re like night and day,” saidTruex. “Their personalities are a little bit different. ‘Bono’ is more quiet and kind of strict. If you do something wrong, he’ll probably yell at you.
“Pat is a little more laid back, kind of likes to have fun. Both of them do a great job, obvi-ously, and they’re both good at calling races and they both understand the race cars well. They’re different, but at the end of the day, they are both out there doing the same job, andboth do it well.”

The Benefits Of Home Staging
by Nan Johnston of Southern Staging & Redesign
Did you know that a home buyer will make a decision on a house within the first10 seconds. In the blink of an eye, they will decide "This is the one" or "Let's move on to thenext one".
There so many houses on the market these days that not only must the house be attrac-tive, cleaned and in excellent repair, it should be seductive. Buyers purchase houses
based on emotions. Theirbuying a dream....a lifestyle. Most buyers can't see past asellers personal items ordecor style. Helping abuyer out by setting thestage can impact how theywill feel in the home... anatmosphere is created thatmakes them want to lingerlonger in the space andimagine themselves livingthere.
Home staging is theprocess of making a home
"buyer ready" so that it will appeal to the largest amount of buyers. It's not interior deco-rating but rather a process of de-cluttering, de-personalizing, utilizing a home sellers fur-nishings and accessories to highlight the best features of a room. It's about creating emo-tional connection between the buyer and the property.
Professionallystaged homes:
• Help increase showings- most buyer traffic willcome through a homewithin the first two weeksit's on the market thanany other time period. This will be a sellers bestaudience and having theproperty ready to showand properly priced iskey.
• Houses that have been professionally staged sell faster and for closer to askingprice - according to surveyed Realtors, Home Staging is the second most valuablehome improvement project to a seller when it comes to selling a home by return oninvestment.
• Doesn't cost a dime - according to the 2009 Home Gain Report, home staging has586% return on investment. ($300 cost / $1780 price increase)
• Helps reduce a property’s time on the market - according to the National Associ-ation of Realtors the longer a property sits on the market the lower the sales pricewill be.
• A well staged home suggest a home that has been cared for and most buyers willpay more for a move-in ready house. Condition of the property will directly affect abuyers offer on a house.
Still unsure about the benefits of home staging? Call a local home staging consultantand find out more. Having your house professionally staged can mean the differencebetween a house sitting on the market or selling faster and for top dollar.

The ever popular Barbie doll is 50 years old this year! The Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation is marking thispassage with a lunchen program Wednesday, June 16 fea-turing award-winning journalist Rheta Grimsley Johnsondiscussing her newest book Enchanged Evening Barbieand the Second Coming: A Memoir. Johnson’s memorablejournalism career began on her Auburn University news-paper, The Auburn Plainsman, where she became the edi-tor and also contributed to rural weeklies. While she wasstill in her 20s, she began writing a syndicated human-interest column for the Memphis Commercial Appeal. After Lewis Grizzard died, the Atlanta Constitution hiredher to take his place and dispatched her around the coun-try looking for stories. She worked in Atlanta for sevenyears while living in Carrollton, Georgia. Her writing waspunctuated by her distinctive writing voice and an unerr-ing knack for revealing her much-loved South throughuncommon stories about its common people. Her stories oflife in the South ring true to her many fans.
In that same warm and down to earth voice Johnsonutilitizes Barbie as a basis for deeper examination —through her own life experiences — of “our inner Barbies,”her identity as a newspaperwoman in a changing world, and, more specifically, how the South shapes its daughters.
The event is free and open to the public, just bring alunch and NCLF will provide the birthday cake. The doorsopen at 11:30 and the program will start at 12. Ms. Johnsonwill have a book signing at Scott’s Bookstore at 3 p.m.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Paul G. Donohue,M.D.
Bladder InfectionsNot Always Painful
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please write somethingabout bladder infections. Can you have a bladderinfection with no symptoms? — A.
ANSWER: The signs and symptoms of bladder infec-tions are the same for men and women. The irritated, infected bladder demands frequent, urgent trips tothe bathroom so it can be emptied. People have aburning sensation when passing urine. Pain is felt inthe bladder area. Sometimes blood appears in theurine.
Men have far fewer bladder infections than women.Women have a shorter urethra than men. The urethrais the tube that empties the bladder of urine. Women’surethras open in an area that has a large bacterialpopulation. Bacteria can ascend the female urethrawithout trouble. It’s harder for them to climb the maleurethra. And men’s prostate glands secrete sub-stances that have antibacterial properties.
The presence of bacteria in the urine without anysigns of bladder infection is called asymptomatic bac-teriuria. Doctors treat pregnant women with asymp-tomatic bacteriuria to prevent symptoms from aris-ing, as they often do during pregnancy. Infected urine, even without symptoms, can lower the birth weight ofbabies who were in the uterus during that period.
Otherwise, asymptomatic bacteriuria in women ormen, at any age, usually does not require treatment. In women, bacteria in the bladder are often transient-ly there. They disappear many times on their own.Treatment can lead to the development of resistantbacteria and can produce side effects. Furthermore, itis costly. The guidance from most experts, therefore,is not to treat asymptomatic bacteriuria.
Exceptions exist. Diabetics might benefit from treat-ment.
The topic of urinary tract infections and their treat-ment are covered in the booklet on that topic. Readerscan order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 1204W,Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a checkor money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada withthe recipient’s printed name and address. Pleaseallow four weeks for delivery.
***
Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his col-umn whenever possible. Readers may write him orrequest an order form of available health newslettersat P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

PAW’SCORNERBy Sam
Mazzotta
One DogGets the
Bed, the Other the Floor
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I should buy stock in the alu-minum foil industry? My 6-year-old boxer/hound mix,Shera, will not stay off the furniture. My bed and living-room furniture are lined with aluminum foil to stopher from climbing them. I have a 14-year-old dog,Bubba, who sleeps with me at night, but never occu-pies the bed or furniture by day. Shera is kenneltrained and sleeps in her kennel at night with the doorfastened.
Bubba is getting near the end, and I don’t want to takeon another dog until I solve this problem with Shera.Would it be best to wait until Bubba is not sleepingwith me to correct this territorial issue? — Susan W.,via email
DEAR SUSAN: I don’t think this is a territorial issueso much as an issue of Shera figuring out how far topush her boundaries. Naturally, she will want to get upon the couch or the bed just like Bubba.
But you don’t have to wait until Bubba is gone to startaddressing Shera’s behavior. You can choose to wait— especially if taking care of Bubba is stressful rightnow and you just don’t want to deal with a new chal-lenge. Shera’s behavior probably will not change dur-ing this period. But if you have the time and energy, start training Shera to stay off the furniture. It’s a mat-ter of you being the leader of the family, and what yousay goes. That means if Bubba gets to sleep on the bedand Shera doesn’t, too tough for Shera.
As far as how: I’d recommend spending more timewith Shera, playing or doing basic obedience trainingon the leash, next to the furniture she likes to jump on.When she wants to get on the couch, tug her away, have her face you and command “sit” or “lie down”and “stay.” Basically, retrain her way of thinking aboutthe purpose of those rooms.

Meet Truett Cathy
About two thirds of all store operators have come upfrom the ranks.
Mr. Cathy quoted one of his favorite Bible verses atour Kiwanis meeting: Proverbs 22:1. A good name israther to be chosen than great riches, and loving favorthan silver and gold. He believes in leading by examplebut he doesn't see Chick-Fil-A as a platform for his faith- rather he applies faith principles to his business. Youwon't find any of his restaurants open on Sunday, andhe is sometimes criticized for that. "We close on Sun-day because we think it's the right thing to do".
Perhaps he has been a very lucky man to have beenso successful. He agrees, then clarifies his answer. "Ifyou examine luck, you will usually find that the peoplewho have been lucky have also worked hard, understoodthe value of a dollar and taken advantage of unexpectedopportunities".
So, as you meet Truett Cathy through this article, meet a man who believes in hard work, treating othersas he would want to be treated and honors God throughhis business and personal life. Quite a man!
By the way, I want to be just like Mr. Cathy when Igrow up!
Almost everyone knows the Chick-Fil-A name andsome can associate Truett Cathy as founder of the com-pany. Yet only a few have had the opportunity to meetMr. Cathy and hear his philosophy of what it takes to besuccessful in the restaurant business and in the busi-ness of life. I got just that opportunity last week whenhe visited the Newnan Kiwanis Club as a guest of hisfriend and business associate, Mitchell Hix, ofUniGlobe Travel.
He granted me a few minutes of his time for this arti-cle and suggested that I refer to his latest book, HowDid You Do It, Truett?.
Since starting his first restaurant in 1946, TruettCathy knew he had to treat his customers the way hewould want to be treated, and serve good food. Thisphilosophy still holds true today in the success of hismore than 1400 locations throughout the country. "Ourcustomers expect delicious food, delivered quickly andaccurately, in a clean environment. To that, we add cour-tesy and kindness", says Mr. Cathy.
When it comes to hiring good people he feels thesame way. "The kinder you are to your people, the moreproductive they will be". Chick-Fil-A tries hard to hirepeople of good character over experience. They thenhave a solid foundation on which to build experience.
We all know that the scorecard of any busi-ness is the profit it produces. Without profit, wecannot take care of our employees, our families,or contribute to the betterment of our communi-ties. The question is: How do we blance the pur-suit of profit and personal character? For me, Ifind that balance by applying Biblical princi-ples. I see no conflict between Biblical principlesand good business practice.
