Piedmont Cancer Center at Newnan

Cancer Wellness at Piedmont is now available in Newnan. Cancer Wellness offers free, comprehensive services and pro-grams to anyone affected by cancer at any phase in his or her cancer journey, regardless of whether or not they are a Pied-mont patient. Below you’ll find the class schedule for Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Newnan Hospital as well as some in-formation about the new patient navigator Stephanie Martin, RN, whose primary responsibility will be to guide cancer pa-tients through their continuum of care. She will likely begin her new role at Piedmont Newnan mid-September.

The professionally-led programs that will be offered at Piedmont Newnan starting this fall are:

One Hour Drummer: Wellness Rhythms ~ Oct. 31, Nov. 28 & Dec. 19 (all Wednesdays) from 10 to 11 a.m. at The Summit, Hwy 34, in the former pharmacy space. Join in the fun playing drums and other rhythm instruments. The interactive and energetic ensemble allows you to experience decreased stress, boost your immune system, feel a part of a caring community and enjoy an overall sense of well-being. No prior musical experience necessary. Facilitated by Peter Marino, President, One Hour Drummer.

Super Foods for Cancer ~ Tuesday, November 6 from noon to 2 p.m. It’s time to multi-task! There are foods that provide multiple disease-fighting nutrients, fill you up so you can enjoy plenty of food without excess calories, and are easy to include in everyday meals. They are called Super foods, and they are super easy to fit into your cancer fighting eat-ing plan. Join Chef Lana Carr and Cancer Wellness dietitian, Taryn Tennyson, as they explore the amazing health benefits of these superstar foods that go far beyond their basic nu-tritional value. Embrace your health, not just fight cancer, with these vibrant and unique super foods! Registration is required for all cooking demonstrations. Please call 770-719-5860.

Yoga and Mindfulness in Newnan Oct. 24, Nov. 14 and Dec. 5 (all Wednesdays) Yoga from 10 to 11 a.m.; Mindfulness from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at The Summit, Hwy 34, in the former pharmacy space

Also, Piedmont Newnan has hired a patient navigator as part of the expanded Cancer Center services being offered. Steph-anie Martin, RN will be primarily responsible for guiding breast cancer patients through their continuum of care. Her position was created as a result of a generous donation from an Atlanta family who wanted to see the Cancer Wellness ser-vices expanded across the Piedmont Healthcare system.

For more information about Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Healthcare or to make a donation in support of the program, visit piedmont.org

Volunteers for Affinis Hospice

All you need is a caring heart! Your involvement will com-municate value to these pa-tients and their families as you provide companionship and a brief respite for caregivers. You will not need to provide any medical or physical care to the patient, just a caring heart and a listening ear. You can provide caregiver relief for 2-4 hours each week to allow the caregiver to enjoy time out of the home. You can use your gifts and talents to impact someone in their last stages of life in many ways, and we will make sure you are well-trained, equipped, and supported. Please call Lynn Yeager 404-832-4232 with interest or questions.

The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

When I purchased the Coweta Shopper two and a half years ago, I had four goals in mind. (1) I wanted the busi-

ness to provide an income for my employees and for me. (2) I wanted to enjoy the work. (3) I wanted to honor God in the way I operate this business. (4) I wanted to provide encouragement, even if in a small way, to the people in our community. Progress toward a goal is often “two steps forward and one step back”, and I sometimes wonder what my grades would be if I received a report card from our readers.

I’m often recognized when I go into a store or restaurant. The per-son may not always remember my name but they might say, “aren’t

you that guy in The Coweta Shopper?” Just in the past couple of months, three people told me how much they enjoyed reading our “Encouraging Words” sec-tion. One lady said she cut it out and taped it to her bathroom mirror – just to get the day started off in a positive way. Another told me she brought them to her business and pinned them to the company bulletin board to share with others. A mother reported sending these quotes to her children and grandchildren in Texas. I am not the author of these quotes; I just group them into topics for the edification of our readers. I suppose that, in the fast pace of everything that’s going on in our world today, there’s nothing very profound about what three folks may read in a local publication. Yet those three people received something into their mind and spirit which may have helped them get through the day – just when they needed it. Encouragement helps people solve problems, meet challenges and move forward into the realm of possibili-ties which sometimes seem absolutely impos-sible. The Coweta Shopper is delivered to almost fifty thousand homes and businesses in Coweta County. But if no one other than these three readers were positively influenced by something we published, my report card has been marked “satisfactory!”, at least on this one goal.

So yes, I’m interested in making a living at this business, but at the same time, doing so in a way that can be interesting, informative, positive, and yes, encouraging. But I do little more than set the tone of the business (and sign the checks when there’s any money in the account). It all happens because of the capable and caring people who work here, interested readers in the com-munity, and most important, our loyal advertisers.

Joe

Volunteers play a vital role in the support of our patients and their fami-lies. Support is given in many ways – sitting at bedside to relieve an ex-hausted caregiver, per-forming small tasks in the patient’s home, reading to a patient, or spending time with a patient and their family as a “friendly visitor”. No special skills are needed but a pas-sion to serve others is de-sired. Please call Mary at 678-817-4180 if you have questions about our pro-gram or if you would like to attend volunteer train-ing.

Make Every Picture CountStudies show that over 90% of home buyers are searching online for their next house. If they don’t see something they like, they will go on to the next house that meets their criteria. Having a beautifully, professionally staged home is critical in order to drive buyer traffic to a sellers front door and having enticing photos of the home online for buyers to find is imperative!

Here are just a few picture taking pointers to remember when taking those interior shots:

Turn on the lights . Open all the window treatments, turn on all of the overhead lights and lamps. It can make a huge difference in the warmth and color of the walls in a room.

Turn off the flash . The flash will add a hard quality and turning off the flash forces the camera to draw in as much natural and artificial light to add warmth and a comfortable glow. However, I always add some shots with the flash or auto setting just in case it’s needed.

Use a tripod . When you turn off the flash the shut-ter speed slows down and if you don’t have a steady hand the photo will be blurry. A tripod will solve this problem. A photographers trick is to steady your arms against your body, specifically, pushing your upper arms into your chest as you shoot. At the same time, spread your legs wide so as to have a tripod effect. Another trick is to lean against a wall or door frame to steady your shot.

Show the flow . Take photos that show how rooms flow from one room to the other, especially if the house has an open floor plan. Buyers like to see how rooms connect to other rooms.

Avoid Backlighting - Make sure the light from windows is coming from the side or behind you to avoid glare.

Go For Volume - With digital cameras, you can never have enough photos so feel free to snap away! Plant yourself in every corner of the room and take the shot. Don’t simply stand there and shoot, get low or high (on stairs or chair) in order to produce a more interesting picture that draws the buyers eye.

Edit, Edit, Edit . Use a photo optimizer like Adobe Photoshop to put the finishing touches on your photos.

For more information about staging and taking great photos for your mar-keting efforts, contact....

“This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given

this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good.

What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow

comes, this day will be gone forever. In its place is something you have left behind …

let it be something good.”~ Unknown

“Multiplication by Division”

Autumn is an excellent time to multiply her-baceous perennials by division. Some plants such as daylillies will bloom better if divided every few years. Iris are also benefited by dividing every three to five years. Dividing perennials is an economical way to increase the number of plants you have. In the Lower South the hot, humid summers stress

newly divided plants; but the cooler, less humid days of September and Octo-ber are a fine time to divide and replant perennials. There is still time for the roots to settle before freezing temperatures arrive. Some plants such as “Powis Castle” ar-temesia should not be pruned in Fall - wait till spring. Baptisa and Peonies have a reputation for not liking to be moved; but I have done this successfully a number of times over the years. If you have a method that has worked for you frequently - just keep doing it. An old time way to move small plants in our Georgia red clay soil is to surround the tiny plant and its roots with a ball of the clay it was found in (moistened well) and plant in its new spot and keep watered. I have tried root-ball plant-ing and in some cases it works well. Wait un-til Spring to divide Sedums. Amsonia is best left in its original location (very woody stem system). Grasses can be dug and divided every several years. An axe can be used to cut the grass clumps into quarters to replant as four new plants. A shovel or spade can be used to divide clumps of perennials such as daylillies. A garden fork can also be used to help lift and divide plants. Some plants such as crocosmia have corms at their base - gently tease apart.

When dividing iris and daylillies or cro-cosmia be sure to keep at least three (3) fans on each new clump. This will make larger plants that will bloom sooner. Cut back iris foliage short when replanting. Rhizomes should sit out to dry (on the cut ends) a day before replanting. Plant them high. Dig holes for new plantings first to the correct depth; then dig and divide plants. Be sure to plant new plants to the correct depth for each type but usually a little high to allow

for settling. Water all new plantings well after dividing and replanting. The roots will develop in Fall and strong new plants will emerge next Spring.

Fall is a great time to multiply herbaceous perennials by division. Happy planting!

Painting Tips

Q: I’m painting my apartment next week, the first time I’ve ever done this. Do you have any painting tips? -- Lana, Columbus, Ga.

A: Tons of tips, but limited space to list them all, unfor-tunately! First-timers often are daunted by the amount of paint and paint products to choose from, conflict-ing instructions from various sources, and sometimes a lack of helpful information from home-improvement store paint sections. Others feel it’s simple enough to just buy a bunch of paint and brushes and just go for it. The reality falls somewhere in between.

Preparation is the most important rule to follow, however. You’ll want to prepare the walls (and pre-sumably trim) in the apartment for painting. You’ll need to figure out not just what color paint to use, but how much of it to buy, and if the colors even work the way you think they will. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Buy sample sizes of paint colors you’re inter-• ested in, and paint a stripe of each in an incon-spicuous section of the wall. Paint looks differ-ent when wet and when dry.How much paint should you buy? A gallon of • latex paint covers 350 square feet. Measure the length of each wall and add the figures together. Measure the height of the room from floor to ceiling. Multiply the first number by the height of the room and you’ll have your square foot-age.Wash all surfaces to be painted with a damp • sponge soaked in a soap and water solution and then squeezed to remove most of the water. Let the surfaces dry for about a half-day, longer if it’s rainy or humid.Remove protruding nails and patch nail holes • and small (less than 1/2 inch) dents and holes with spackling compound. Once it’s dry, sand the compound lightly and wipe with a damp sponge to remove dust.Mask off areas you don’t want to paint using • blue painter’s tape, which comes off more easily than masking tape.Covering a dark wall with a lighter paint? Prime • the wall first with a primer that is close to or matches the color of the new paint.Ditto for covering one type of paint, such as an • oil-based paint, with a different type, such as la-tex paint. A primer coat will keep your new paint from bubbling, cracking or peeling.Make sure the area being painted is well venti-• lated; additionally, wear a filter mask (not a dust mask) to reduce inhalation of paint fumes.

HOME TIP: Paint stores will pre-mix your paint af-ter you purchase it, saving a lot of time, but you still should stir the paint for a few seconds immediately be-fore beginning to paint with it.

Preventing Football InjuriesBy Michael Cushing, MD

Football is one of the most popular sports and leads all other sports in the number of injuries sustained. An estimated 920,000 people are treated annually in hospitals, doctor’s offices and clinics for football related injuries. Sprains and strains account for 30% of injuries, broken bones followed with 22%. While only 1% of in-juries were concussions, this type of injury can be serious. Repeat injuries, particularly to the head, are the most serious threat to life.

Common Injuries to Football Players

m Traumatic: Knee injuries are most com-mon, especially those to the anterior and pos-terior cruciate ligaments (ACL/PCL) and to the meniscus. Shoulder injuries are also quite com-mon. This can involve injuries to the labrum as seen in shoulder dislocations, or involve injuries to the AC joint (AC dislocations). Ankle sprains are common as well.

mConcussions: A concussion is a change in mental state due to a trau-matic impact. The signs of a concussion include headache (most common), dizziness, nausea, loss of balance, numbness and tingling and blurry vision. The athlete should return to play only when clearance is granted by a physi-cian.

mHeat Injuries: These usually occur in August due to the high temps and humidity. Excessive sweating depletes the body of salt and water. Early symptoms include painful cramping of major muscle groups, profuse sweat-ing and weakness. Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke when the body’s temperature regulation fails. The affected individual becomes lethar-gic, confused, the skin stops sweating. This is life threatening and emergency medical attention is necessary.

Tips for players to reduce football related injuries

Perform proper warm up and cool down routines1.

Hydrate adequately, stay active during summer break to prepare to 2. return to sports in the fall

Choose equipment carefully, always be sure it is properly fitted and 3. wear all equipment, even when practicing

Make sure playing surface is free of debris, rocks, holes etc.4.

Limit blocking and tackling drills during practice, always tackle 5. with head up and do not lead with your helmet.

Always check with a physician after an injury to make sure it is safe 6. to return to play.

Dr. Mike Cushing received his undergraduate degree from In-diana University. He is a gradu-ate of the Medical College of Georgia and did his residency at Georgia Baptist Hospital (now Atlanta Medical Center). Dr. Cushing did a shoulder/sports fellowship at Hughston Clinic and practices at Georgia Bone and Joint.
