I was fortunate enough to learn, at an early age, that there was

money out there to be had if I could do something in exchange

for it. As a boy, I raked leaves, cut grass and did other odd jobs

until I was old enough to get a “real job” delivering newspapers.

I was 13 and I was the “Paper Boy”! I had to deliver a newspaper

to one customer’s home (4 miles away) for seven days in order

to earn 10 cents. Not per day, but 10 cents for the week! But once

I multiplied this little profit by one hundred customers in that

same neighborhood, I was earning ten dollars a week! And I was

learning how to leverage my time in that neighborhood to turn my

paper route into a volume business. I pedaled my bike (and later

rode my motor scooter) over 10,000 miles those two years.

I suppose you can’t get this paper busi-

ness out of your blood, and in April of 2010,

almost fifty years later, I found myself as the

new owner of The Coweta Shopper. I knew I

could leverage our advertiser’s costs by get-

ting their message to tens of thousands of

homes and businesses for about a penny

each. Ray Kroch knew it, Henry Ford knew

it and so does Bill Gates. You don’t have to

earn a big profit per customer but you sure

do have to have a lot of them!

So, a dime per household profit seemed

to work pretty well for me in the early 60’s

and its working well today. But there’s more

to it than volume. I want The Coweta Shopper to be interesting and informative, and do so in a

positive way. And I want our advertisers to get some good results for their “penny per view”. A

profitable business is “earned” by meeting the customer’s need and understanding the numbers.

I am always keen to hear what you, our readers and advertisers, think, and what improvements

you can suggest. The population of our community is still growing, and perhaps if I do things

right, my “dime per customer” will eventually amount to something.

I guess I’m still just the “Paper Boy”!

Postscript: I no longer deliver papers from my bicycle or motorcycle. The United States

Postal Service has agreed to deliver The Shopper to every home and business in Coweta County

since they are out there anyway. And that sure saves me a lot of pedaling!

WETLANDSIn these times of water concerns in many states, preserv-ing and protecting wetlands has become more important than ever. Identifying wetlands that need to be protected

is an ongoing process. Since 1987, there have been certain guidelines for the delineation of federally protected wetlands. Individual states have other rules for further protection.

Ecology studies the ways various plants and animals live together in specific en-vironments. Limnology is the study of inland waters and deals with things such as weather, geography, biology, chem-istry, climate, etc., that affect the inland water environment. Ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, bogs, wetlands and flood plains all have very important roles to play in creating habitats for plants and animals. Humans also benefit from these environments in a number of ways other than sources of drinking water and power.

Wetlands provide food, habitat, cover and nesting for birds and other animals. They purify the water passing through them. Processes occurring in wetlands fix nitrogen and help to clean the air. Specific plant habitats are preserved by wetlands and help to recharge ground water. There, minerals are dissolved and filter pollutants and silt. Wetlands also serve the necessary function of flood control

A wetland may be a swamp, bog or an area that is adjacent to a pond or lake, or even a spring-fed wet depression in the land. It may also be caused by a drainage area (low-lying) for surrounding land. Everything that happens upland from the wetland affects it for bet-ter or worse. We all know how important it is not to pollute our waters with chemicals and pesticides and by dumping into them.

Many beautiful plants call the habitats home. Some, such as pitcher plants need full sun areas. Cardinal flowers and joe-pye love these moist areas. Cattails grow in standing water and can be invasive and difficult to eliminate. Beware of purple loosestrife! It has become very invasive and will push out native flora and fauna. Also, plants like pickerel weed can spread rapidly. Never put plants from home water gardens into streams, ponds, lakes, swamps or wetlands. Native species are desirable; however, yellow flag iris should not be added. Hydrilla and milfoil are aquatics that have cost vast amounts of government mon-ies to try to remove from waterways. Water hyacinth and water lettuce are also plants that have escaped into waterways. We must educate ourselves and our children to protect valu-able natural resources.

For a great tree, death comes as a gradual transformation. Its vitality ebbs slowly. Even when life has abandoned it entirely, it remains a majestic thing. On some hilltop a dead tree may dominate the landscape for miles around. Alone among living things, it retains its’ character and dignity after death. Plants wither; animals disintegrate, but a dead tree may be as arresting, as filled with personality in death as it is in life. Even in its’ final moments, when the massive trunk lies prone, it has moldered into a ridge covered with mosses and fungi and arrives at a fitting and noble end. It enriches and refreshes the earth. And later as part of the green and growing things, it rises again.

TRAIL FACTS

The Appalachian Trail is one of the longest, continually marked foot paths in the world. Beginning in Springer Mountain, Georgia, it covers over 2150 miles through 14 states, with its terminus at Mount Katahdin, Maine.

Known as the “A.P.”, it has been es-timated that 2-3 million people visit yearly. About 1800 people attempt to “thru-hike” each year, however, only about 1 in 4 will complete the entire trail in one long walk.

Completed in 1937, The “Trail” is a unit of the National Park System and is maintained by the Appa-lachian Trail Conservancy, along with thousands of volunteers from 31 local trail maintaining clubs.

Nature At Its Best… Scott Wilson Takes A Hike

Henry David Thoreau once said, “I think that I can-not preserve my health unless I spend time walking – sauntering through the woods and over the hills and fields, absolutely free from worldly engagements”. There are few who understand this philosophy better than Newnan’s Scott Wilson. An avid hiker, Scott, with some friends, has realized his goal of walking the entire Appalachian Trail, some 2,168 miles from Georgia to Maine. He not only has a spirit of adventure, but en-joys an appreciation of the beauty, serenity and healing power of being close to nature. “A long stroll in the woods will heal anything”, says Scott.

The “Walk” was completed in 1997, having taken 18 years of vacation time from his responsibilities, but “family and business came first”. Scott also introduced several friends to hiking and many joined him on dif-ferent sections of the trail. Bill Headley went along most years and they finished the trail together. Scott’s sons Pitts and Scott, Jr. joined him several times, as well as Bill Berry, Jackie Binion, Geno Smith, Carl Wil-liams and others. “We would walk 10-14 miles each day, with the longest (and hardest) covering twenty-one miles”, Scott remembers. He enjoys Spring and Fall trips for the milder weather and has slept in a tent when the mercury would fall as low as ZERO!

Yes, a walk in the woods can be a healing balm for our bodies and our minds. But left alone, a forest will be in a constant state of life and death, regenerating it-self and becoming a new and different place each sea-son. Understanding and appreciating this, Scott took this photo of a fallen tree, promoting new life from its horizontal trunk. He also provided us with a copy of a writing by Edwin Way Teale describing this regenerat-ing miracle of nature. I believe Scott Wilson is quite in agreement with Mr. Thoreau and Mr. Teale. He un-derstands, first hand, that the mountains and forests of Appalachian Trail can provide “nature at its best”.

In the real estate world, sellers will hear the word “de-personalizing” when preparing their house to sell.

Most people think it means removing personal photos and portraits so that the buyer will be able to imagine themselves living in the property that they are con-sidering purchasing. And yes, that is part of de-personalizing, however it is really much more than just removing personal photos.

De-personalizing involves re-moving any or all of the following:

3 DVD and CD collections

3 specific paint or wall paper choices

Sellers will often ask me “why do we have to remove these things”. Well think about it … take personal collections for example. This could be anything to collections of old cameras, clocks, figurines, etc. Once a buyer starts noticing the collection, that’s what their focus is towards and guess what?
