Coming rom two small post-confictcountries, we elt uncom ortable to read an article claiming that “the pride o belonging to the nation is equal to thepride o belonging to a political party

that refects your views”. And we havetwo examples that show the opposite.

Even though we have di erentexperiences, they both show thatnationalism rather divides than

celebrates diversity.

An example o Yugoslavia: a multinationalstate, united by sisterhood, brotherhood, and comradeship was torn apart by theen orcement o nationalism and genocidethat ollowed it. Until then, Yugoslavidentity was based on common values, allthe nations could coexist peace ully and itdidn’t matter which country the Yugoslavcitizens initially belonged to. and genocide in Bosnia didn’t happen because o thelack o national identity but quite the opposite.

An example o Lithuania: Lithuania was one o thefrst states who managed to get independence romthe iron clench o the Soviet Union. WavingLithuanian ags while fghting or the right to speak, read what you like, have your own political views, aright to move, breathe or just be di erent, was a fghtor reedom not a right to ethnocentric nationalism.

And people waving the ags were fghting or reedomtogether regardless o their di erent ethnicities:Polish, Lithuanian, Jews, etc. I they ocused on beingproud o their nationality, ethnicity, or whatever theywould not have a ground or common struggle.

As socialists we are united by values we believe in:equality, solidarity, reedom and peace. By this weocus on what we have in common and what unites us,

not what divides us. We fnd it hard to understandwhy people would want to ocus on identi ying withthe idea that caused (and is still causing) so muchsu ering, division and con icts rather than the ideaswhich acknowledge and embrace diversity and ocuson shared values. And we fnd it di cult tounderstand how sharing the same nationality can bea value in itsel .

Which country you belong to says as much about youas a person as whether or not you have allergies. Wealso believe that the struggle o our Palestiniancomrades is a struggle or reedom andliberation and not the right to nationalism.

All o this has already been said manytimes. But not always as inspiring as withthe words o John Lennon: “Imaginethere’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do.Nothing to kill or die or… Imagine all thepeople sharing all the world.”

On Monday morning, all the camperswere surprised to hear the sirens orhe fre drill. Each town marched o toheir fre point.

“I was very pleased at how well it went,”said Jon Nott, Woodcra t Folk generalsecretary.

“Te only thing that didn’t go accordingto plan was that the Blue Cedar ownheard Silver Birch own’s practice andthought it was or them so we did two atonce.”Some people said the fre drill wasexciting and un, some said it wasboring and annoying (Red Oak ownwere hal way through their lunch –some people took their lunches withthem).“We were just really impressed at howorganised some villages are,” said Jon.“One village turned up with a laminated A3 sheet with the names o all their

We gave them a goldstar.”Tere had been a plan to light a real, controlled fre at Red Oak own, but theplan was cancelled.“Te Scouts postponed it,” said Jon.“Tey wanted to test their on-sitevehicles but they decided it wasn’tsomething that was appropriate to do.We think it’s probably because it wastoo windy a day.”

Kit Jones came to me and in a casual and optimistiche said “I need, a daring team o journalists, who nothing and will not stop at anything to get an at lpassable story,” I told him I knew the exact right typpeople, it was a job or News eam 16.

tip was, they had been conducting research into geengineering naughty woodchips into a race o 7 carbon beast-men.

Tere was little hope as the noxious gases tincapacitated us were coming rom our own backpackspockets.

We awoke in a strange environment. Te air was clethere was no litter on the oor and ha rdly a wasp in sigWe still thought the only logical explanation was thahad died and somehow ended up in heaven. It must been a mistake in the a terli e administration ofces, bthere was no point bothering anyone with that now.

At point we clearly took a wrong turn

Te child seemed to know a thing or two so we thouwe’d humour him by giving him an interview. Why exare there not as many wasps in this corner o CoCampWell, that’s because we wash up all our plates, try nlitter, and take care o recycling and slops propobviously that’s going to reduce the amount o cr

All o Red Oak uses it, it’s an excellent wmaking energy without the waste. In act i socinvested more in it than the modern world’s curpower source it has the potential to actually be mefcient. You’re an adult, you should know that.

Well what about these carbon beast-men, know it all?[Te el n shi ts nervously under oot] I’m not supposed talk about this, we did create the theory or them but Red Oak Council o Elders re used to use the solar enor such a cause. We were going to burn the plans in

Will Serby

CoCamp style comes into its own with thesublime collection that Will Serby wears sovery eloquently. Styling himsel rom theexact date o August 12th 1925 at precisely1 o’clock in the a ternoon, this strappingyoung lad appears nonchalant in his‘English gentleman’s’ attire; shirt, tie, tweed jacket. Tis look takes dedication…i you have the commitment to devote yourli estyle to this appearance then thebenefts certainly are clear. Will shopsalmost entirely rom vintage shops, andobviously due to their style all his clothes

are rom tailors in England. Te jacketshown is made rom the fnest Cotswoldstweed coupled with Harris weed.

But is it practical or CoCamp? Will assuresus that it is very practical….just look at hissocks! He never gets anything in his shoes.Other around him are sceptical due to heatissues, but Will is unperturbed…insistingyou get used to it.And fnally when asked i there are anyessential accessories Will Serby simplyreplied “loose lea tea!”

Jamie

Jamie the Morris Dancer certainlycelebrated his 17th Birthday instyle…shown here with his

hand-tailored traditional; ‘BorderMorris Dancer’ costume.Border Morris Dancing derives romthe Welsh and English Border andinvolves a lot o very wildmovements with loud screaming. Bigsticks are also a prominent part o thedance.Te ace paint is a necessity also since itacts as a disguise…in the history o thedance you would be in disguise so no onewould know who you are!I don’t know i the Morris Dancer look isgoing to catch on at this camp but I thinkyou look ab Jamie!

Will

Another Will now, but this one plays downhis everyday style…buying most o hisclothes rom eBay (wow aren’t ourCoCampers good at the old second handgame) he gathers a beauti ul array o necklaces stretching as ar as a compass!I’m not such a an o orienteering, Will, butI’m a an o your style!

Annie

Annie is defnitely ‘bringing it’ as a ashionicon at CoCamp. She looks divine in hercharity shop-bought clothes… notconcerned with popular ashion trends herphilosophy is: ‘I’ll get something i I see itand like it!’

Great attitude Annie…..and such a goodlook or CoCamp 2010!

Imogen

Imogen has encapsulated her ideal o whata CoCamp outft should be…modelling herea blue striped dress which she got rom acharity shop or only £1, and a straw boatertied delicately with a silk scar both o which were a gi t. Clearly enjoying thesunny weather Imogen also sports vintagesunglasses. Unseen in the picture are her jelly shoes – it’s all about bringing back ourchildhood isn’t it, Imogen? I rememberlong summer days on the beach with jellyshoes…ohhh the nostalgia…..*sigh*.Tis look is great i you want to make asplash amongst your riends and are alsoconcerned about the ethical side o clothing.
