SUMMER is hereand it's timeagain for Wigan'sO u t d o o rEducation Teamto kick off theirsummer projectsand make sureyoung people cansafely enjoy theborough's canalsand waterways.The Canalsideproject began thisyear on July 23rdand runs through toAugust 31st.It provides young

people across theborough with anopportunity to get outon the canals, learn alittle local history,learn about safety onthe water and above alltry something fun.

Roy Pass, WiganCouncil's OutdoorEducation TeamManager, said: "We goto different placesalong the canals onafternoons throughoutthe summer and we'llhave fun getting out onthe water in kayaks.You will also learnabout looking afteryourself and lookingout for others whenyou are on the water.This year the sessions

take place at differentvenues across theborough in Crooke,Beech Hill, WiganPier, Rosebridge, TopLock, Dover Lock,Plank Lane,Pennington, ButtBridge and MarslandGreen.All sessions take

place between 1 - 3pm

at one of the differentlocations each day.Anyone is welcome

to join fromindividuals and groupsof friends to youthgroups, Scouts, Guidesand community

groups.Individuals can

normally turn up on theday whereas largergroups may need tobook.All Canalside

sessions are free, runby qualified instructorsand are open to anyoneaged 11-21. Thoseunder 17 must bring asigned parental consentform on the day.TAnyone taking part

in any of the aboveactivities should bringa change of clothes anda towel. All otherequipment will beprovided.For more information

BLOODDONATIONsessionswill take placeat DW Stadium LoireDrive, Robin Park, onMondayAugust 13th.There will be two

sessions, an afternoonsession from 1.15pm-3:30pm and an eveningsession from 5:15pm-7:30pm.Blood donations dropped

by 3% during the twoweeks of Wimbledon fromthe previous fortnight andwith the Olympic Gamesjust around the corner,stocks could potentiallytake another dip.NHS Blood and

Transplant (NHSBT) wantto avoid this happening byreminding blood donorsand those thinking aboutgiving blood for the firsttime in Wigan to donate tokeep stocks healthy duringand after the games.Anyone aged between 17

challengeCHILDREN in Wigan willhave a unique opportunitythis summer, as a summerreading challenge is in store.The challenge, which began on

July 14th, is for every child aged 4-11 years old, to read just six booksof their choice from their locallibrary.Campaign organisers, The

Reading Agency, hope this willencourage children to read for funand not as a chore.

The Reading Agency are alsoworking with the RNIB, a charitywhich offers support and advice toblind and partially sighted peoplein the UK, to ensure there arebooks suitable for everyone.Miranda McKearney, Chief

Executive of The Reading Agency,said: “With so much pressure onlibraries, this year of all years is thetime to support the work librariesdo to inspire children to enjoyreading."Research shows that children

who use libraries are twice aslikely to be above average readersand that children who take part inthe challenge go back to schoolwith improved reading skills and aboost to their confidence.“Children taking part will receive

DEANERY HighSchool, let out itsYear10 pupils into theworld of work duringthe last two weeks oftheir summer term.Pupils took to various

tasks in different workingenvironments to experiencewhat it will be like to be afuture employee.Whether it was working as

a teacher, nurse, shopassistant or judge, everyonehad a little taste of what someof us hope will be our futurejobs.As one of those pupils, I

got the opportunity to workwith TheWigan Courier.It was a great experience

for me as I got to write,interview and photograph, allof which are the aspects ofwhat I hopewill bemy futurejob.I'm sure I am not the only

pupil in Year 10 who foundthe two-weeks workexperience useful.Some Year 10 pupils

shared their experiences andfeelings during their workplacements with me.Charlotte Lopez, worked

for two weeks in GalaxyOptical Services inAltrincham.Throughout her fortnight

she undertook many tasks

such as,making a new pair ofglasses and working indispatch, packing products.Charlotte said: “I found it

very useful as it gave me achance to see what life is likeoutside the schoolenvironment."During my work

experience, I found I waslearning in a more

independent way, which I'venever experienced before. Itwas a greta opportunity forme to experience.”Rebecca Jones worked for

two weeks in Wigan andLeigh Hospice.She said: “I enjoyed work

experience and I am gratefulthat I was lucky enough to doit as I believe it taught me

lessons Iwill need to use laterin life.”The Deanery is the only

school in Wigan to have awork experience fortnight.On behalf of all of the

pupils in Year 10, I wouldlike to say how much weappreciated this opportunityto experience the world ofwork.

September in Haigh Hall Country Park. The event over 5kilometers, which is just over three miles, can either berun, jogged or walked, and should take about one hour towalk. It is a great way to have a little exercise in beautifulsurroundings and at the same time raise some money forresearch into men’s cancers.For the regular runners or those more adventurous there

is also a 10K event on the same day, which is open to all.All the profits from this Wigan Rotary Club event will

be donated to the Men Matter Appeal who fund researchinto men’s cancers at The Christie Hospital.Bernard Edmunds Chairman of the appeal said ‘ We are

WIGAN'S community can still lookforward to many more olympicthemed activities available throughoutAugust.If you didn't get the chance to go and enjoy thetwo week dance event, Dance Fusion, or missedout on the Westleigh Olympics held at WestleighHigh School in July, there's plenty more in store.As we all eagerly watch Team Great Britaincompete in the London 2012 olympics, the people ofWigan, can take their olympic experience to a wholenew level. Budding artists will be able to display theirolympic themed artwork at a range of venues acrossthe Wigan Borough.For those who would like to get a real feel for the

THIS MONTH, Ivisited Wigan’sEmpire Cinema,which is one ofWigan's mostpopular attractionsand a majoremployer in thetown.

While I was there, I wastreated to a tour of thebuilding, including all ofthe backstage areas that arenormally off limits.

The highlight of the visitwas meeting theprojectionist, NormanBrown, who has worked asa projectionist in the NorthWest for an amazing 46years.

Norman started his careerin Preston before moving toWigan when the cinemaopened, and during that

time he has seen filmdevelop beyond allrecognition.

On the tour, Normanshowed me the ropes, andwe discussed how cinemais changing with the onsetof digital films.

Norman has had afascinating career and is ahuge asset to Wigan.

While I was at the EmpireI also learnt that one of themost popular features inWigan is 3D films.

We are apparently verykeen on children’s filmsand on horror movies,although the staff weren’tquite sure why!

Cinema is reallyimportant to families,especially at this time ofyear with children offschool for the long summerholidays.

I was pleased to hear that

the Cinema runs cut pricefilms for families and thatthey also offer access forpeople with disabilitieswho should not beprevented from watchingfilms through no fault oftheir own.

This month I also had thepleasure of presentingyoung people from TheMeadows Youth Facility,on Ridyard Street inWorsley Hall, with ticketsto go the Olympic Games.

The Meadows was a run-down building but over thelast two years has beentransformed into a state-of-the-art youth facility whichis popular and much-lovedby young people in the

area.The tickets, which were

donated by Streetgamesand Wigan Leisure andCulture Trust, are for thefootball at Old Trafford andthe lucky recipients aregoing to watch Englandplay Senegal.

I was treated to a tour bythe young people who useand volunteer at TheMeadows, and I left themin no doubt that I would behappy to attend the footballin their place if for somereason they couldn’t go!

Having met them, theythoroughly deserve theopportunity and I amdelighted that they havebeen chosen.

THIS month Mr.Chris Anders aTai Chi teachergave AppleyBridge WI a talkon the subject heteaches.Tai Chi is an ancient

form of meditative

exercise whichoriginated in China.Orginally Tai Chi was

developed as a martialarts but is now practisedby millions of people allover the world toimprove and maintaingood health.Chris told the group

how he travelled to NewZealand to learn anddevelop the practice ofTai Chi and at the end ofthe evening taughtmembers some basic TaiChi movements.The WI's walking and

book club continue to beas popular as ever.Together with Countyevents there is somethingfor everyone at the WI.The next meeting will

be on Wed 8th August at7-30 p.m. at AppleyLane North whenspeaker Joan Hardwichwill gave a talk called"Carnival Capers".

THETVRClassicCarClubcelebrated the Olympicswith their own car relay andraised £1,000 for localchildren’s charity DerianHouse in the process.A procession of TVRschauffeured a stick of rockaround the UK, stopping atdifferent TVR regions to handover the rock.The precession arrived at theRigbyeArms for the stick of rockto be passed to Martin Lilley, theowner of TVR company in the1970’s.The procession then travelledto Derian House Children’sHospice to present the£1,000cheque raised by the car clubmembers.Our picture above showsmembers of the TVR clubpassing the stick of rock toMartin Lilley at the RigbyeArms.


MAKEANOTE in your diaries- Shevingtonand District Community Fete is back onSaturdayAugust 4th!The Fete will take place at Shevington Methodist Church and

ChurchHall, St.Anne’s ChurchHall, ShevingtonYouth Club andShevington Recreational Ground from 11am-3pm.This year’s Fete is celebrating the Olympics, with an Olympiad

Sports event on the recreational ground.Local hostelries have been invited to compete in the event . The

teams are as follows: Silver Tally, representing ShevingtonMoor,Crooke Hall, Royal Oak, Lower Ground, Station Inn, AppleyBridge and Vale, and Plough and Harrow, Shevington.These teamswill go head-to-head in a tug-o-war competition, a

wheelbarrow relay race, darts and dominoes competitions and awelly-throwing competition.There are also children’s sports races, from the egg and spoon

race, sack race,three-legged race plus many more.In keeping with an Olympiad theme, there will be gold, silver,

bronze medals to be won and all children who enter will alsoreceive a memento of the event.Stalls and attractions show-casing local organisations and

charities, plus heritage displays representing the communities ofShevington and Crooke will be displayed throughout the day.Police, fire and St. John’s ambulance services will alsomake an

appearance at the Fete, as well as a British sub-aqua display, craftfair, children’s rides, a bouncy castle and the annual ShevingtonGardening Club Flower and Vegetable show.The Flower and Vegetable Show is also following an Olympic

theme by introducing, for this year only, “Olympiad” classes inthe show.The special classes are as follows: anOlympic torchmade from

vegetable and plant material, a display of flowers in red, whiteand blue, three decorated cakes with an Olympic theme, a photowith a sporting subject, an Olympic poster in any medium (adultentry), an Olympic poster in any medium, (entry for under 16s).Also for children, an Olympic theme seed tray display from

vegetable and plant material.Two of the classes are specifically for children, but children

may enter any of the above seven classes.The Flower and Vegetable Show’s timetable is as follows:Registration for exhibitors will be from 9am until 10.45am,

staging of exhibits will be from 8am until 11am, judging ofexhibits will be from 11am until 1pm. The showwill then open togeneral viewing from 1pm onwards.

OLD HALLCommunity BrassBand performed anexcellent concert for apacked audience at theAcademy of Live &RecordedArts,Wigan.After successfully

obtaining funding at theWigan Rotary’s DragonsDen event in 2010 for thepurchase of sheet music, theband offered to play at theRotary Club's concert.The band entertained the

audience with a wide rangeof music from piecesspecially written for brassbands to pop music by TheBeatles and a bit of RobbieWilliams included for goodmeasure.Wigan Rotary's Immediate

cover the walls and thepaper-covered desk wherepiles of literature live, is aclear indication of howbusy he actually is.Moving to the Parish last

November with his wifeVanessa from St. Peter'sChurch in Darwen, thecouple are now settled inthe village and involved inmany activities in thecommunity.He is a Governor at

Standish Community HighSchool, and has very stronglinks with both St. Wilfrid'sInfant and Junior Schooland Woodfold School, aswell as being a part of theorganisations and clubs inthe Parish."Involvement is very

important. The people ofStandish have such avariety of gifts and talentsand it's great to share,celebrate and be a part ofthat."With an Adult, Babies,

and Children group,Saturday concerts,Mother's Union, youthgroups and the opportunityfor people to take a tour ofthe church, there is alwayssomething going on in theParish of St. Wilfrid's, andAndrew is relishing it."It's great to see so much

going on. Our parish alsohas strong links with theother Parishes in Standish,which we saw at Standish'sWalking Day."To be involved in so

many different groups andorganisations, meetingdifferent people, fromdifferent walks of life isfantastic."Andrew has not always

been in the Church.During his youth,

Andrew attended a cateringcollege in Wincester andwas offered a job at one ofthe London's mostluxurious hotels, Claridges.In charge of the waitering

department for nine years,Andrew joked: "When I tellpeople I used to work forClaridges it's either a

conversation starter or aconversation finisher!"Things changed when the

new Rector felt a strongsense of calling to thepriesthood, and went St.Stephen's House, OxfordUniversity, to studytheology.From waiting on a-list

celebrities to working inthe church was a big, butwelcome, change.Ordained 20 years ago,

Andrew has worked in theBlackburn Diocese eversince.He started his ministry at

St. Paul's Church,Blackpool, where he stayedfor three years. He thenmoved to St. Chad's inPoulton, and two yearslater he was appointedVicar at St. James,Leyland.After seven years at the

Parish of St. James' hemoved to St. Peter'sDarwen, where he stayedfor seven years beforemoving to Standish."Each place is special to

me, and Standish is no

different. When I moveplaces I like to go with ablank sheet instead ofhaving expectations.“There are so many

things going on in andaround the church, I wantto share that journey withthe folk of Standish. I'mpart of the Parish, I'm notthe Parish."It's a joy and an

enormous privilege to beinvolved in such a Parish.Standish and it's peopledefinitely has something tooffer."From speaking to

members of the parish ofSt. Wilfrid's it is clear tosee that Andrew is verymuch a part of Standishand Standish is very mucha part of him.

THE Deanery Church of EnglandHigh School entertained some specialvisitors in July – but this year, therewas an extra special reason tocelebrate!The Deanery has had a long association with

School 115 in the Ukranian city of Donetsk – a citymany football fans will be familiar with as theyhosted several matches in the recent Europeanchampionships.Pupils from The Deanery have visited Donetsk, and

every July a group of Ukranian children have visitedthe Wigan school.The Ukranians have always enjoyed an action-

packed programme during their time here, samplinglessons at The Deanery and seeing the sights inManchester, Liverpool and beyond.This year they paid a special visit to Merthyr Tydfil,

birthplace of Welshman John Hughes, who foundedDonetsk.Headteacher Stephen Brierley said: “It’s always

been a real pleasure to welcome Principal Gennadiy

Saprykin, his staff and pupils to Wigan and to ourschool.”This year, the occasion was all the more special – it

is 20th consecutive year Mr Saprykin has visited TheDeanery with pupils from Donetsk.“Few schools can boast of such a long-lasting link

as we have with School 115. We are proud that somany pupils from both our schools have had thechance to experience a new culture.”Special celebrations have been held to mark the

20th anniversary.The Ukranians were given pride of place at the

school’s recent Awards Evening, and addressed ameeting of the Governors too.Gifts have been exchanged and the group has met

with the Mayor of Wigan to mark the occasion.Mr Brierley added: “Our school has 20 years-worth

PUPILS from the Hindley-based ‘Travel andTourism’group at Oakfield High School recentlyundertook to do some fundraising for Wigan &Leigh Hospice.

Initially a group of ten children, with special needs,discussed various ideas for activities they could do and to planthe organisation of a raffle.

They then made posters, designed a webpage, madedonation envelopes and even learned how to set up a ‘Just-Giving’ page. Each member of the team was allocated roleswhich, as well as organising a raffle, included things like‘name the monkey’ and ‘guess the teachers jobs beforebecoming schoolteachers’!

All their hard work clearly paid off because they are seenhere making a magnificent donation of £221.

Hospice fundraiser Maxine Armstrong said:“This is afantastic effort on behalf of the children, teachers and theschool. We want to give a big thank-you to the children forall their hard work and to everyone who supported them.”

By Hannah ParkerONCE again, the highlyanticipated, WiganInternational Jazz Festivalproved to be a huge success.In its 27th year, the five-day eventsaw the return of many Wiganfavourites, including JamesMorrison, Alan Price and theNational Youth Jazz Orchestra.The festival, organised by Wigan Leisure

Culture Trust in association with WiganJazz Club, brought a real taste of jazz to theBorough, showcasing different styles whileproviding a wonderful variety of musicaltalent.The festival has developed a reputationfor high quality performances and thisyear’s festival was no different with a 60per cent increase in ticket sales from lastyear.Festival organiser, Ian Darrington sharedhis delight at the success of this year’sfestival. He said: “The Wigan InternationalJazz Festival is such a success because ofit’s combination of great musicians.“The challenge of bringing in a big

audience is always exciting, jazz is alwayschanging and it’s great to share it witheveryone who attends.”A.J Brown and his band kicked off thefestival at the Jazz Ball, held at Haigh Hall.

Words by Hannah ParkerWIGANERS are waitingwith bated breath for theopening of the much-anticipated £6.5m YouthZone, in the Wigan TownCentre.With the construction work ontrack, the new social ‘hub’ for theborough’s young people is set toopen in March 2013.

The idea blossomed five years ago,thanks to local businessmen, MartinAinscough, now Chairman of theYouth Zone, Bill Ainscough and DaveWhelan, who have providedsignificant funding for thedevelopment.After visiting Bolton Lads and GirlsClub, the three entrepreneurs decidedthat the borough’s young peopledeserved a facility equally as good-ifnot better!Players from Wigan Athletic

Football Club and the Premier Leaguehave also contributed towards funding.Wigan Youth Zone, situated onParson’s Walk opposite Wigan andLeigh College, will be the biggest

youth zone in the North West and willboast a gym, music suites, aperforming arts studio, sports pitchesand even a climbing wall. Enterpriseservices will also be available offeringeducation about finance and writingCVs.Memberships are available for 8-21

year-olds costing five pounds a yearand 50p per sessions for the use of allfacilities. Young people withdisabilities will also have access.In order to access the building,

be about the young people, no adultswill be allowed to enter the building-the zone is a base purely for youngpeople. Their ideas and opinions arevital.“The Youth Zone will enable

THE TOYOTA PriusPlug-in offersstaggering fueleconomy, but is itworth the premiumover a regular Prius?The Prius Plug-in is an

excellent all-round eco car,with space, practicality andoutstanding fuelconsumption. It takesadvantage of its EVcapabilities to make anexcellent short-distancecommuter, yet because it's ahybrid, you don't have tosuffer from range anxiety. Itshares the regular Prius' blanddriving experience, but in thename of economy, it's anoutstanding real-world ecocar.Is this the best Toyota Prius

on sale? The all-new Plug-inversion promises greater

economy, as its more efficientbatteries give an even longerelectric-only range. The car isToyota’s answer to range-extenders like the VauxhallAmpera and Chevrolet Volt –and it undercuts them, too, at£27,895 after the £5,000Government EV grant (theAmpera costs £33,995 afterthe same discount).On the outside, this Prius

looks like any other, with onlyminor touches like the chromefront bumper details, silvernumber plate shroud on thebootlid and badging setting itapart. But under the skin, newlithium-ion batteries replacethe regular nickel versions,and they take the electric-onlyrange from around two milesto 15 miles.After testing 600 plug-in

research vehicles in Europeover the past few years,

Toyota found thatmost had anaverage daily journey of 12.5miles – so the Prius Plug-inshould be able to completemost commutes on electricpower. It takes just 90minutesto charge, and this can bedone at a regular socket. But ifthe battery runs flat, the Plug-in behaves like a regularPrius, running on petrolpower, so there’s no rangeanxiety.Due to the batteries’ greater

range, however, the petrolengine – which is the same1.8-litre as used in the Prius –doesn’t have to cut in as often,and won’t use as much fuel.Toyota claims a staggeringeconomy figure of 134.5mpg,backed up by CO2 emissionsof 49g/km. The Prius’ 72mpgand 89g/km suddenly don’tlook quite so impressive.But all this comes at a cost:

the batteries add 50kg ofweight to the package and 0.9seconds to the 0-62mph time,taking the latter to 11.3seconds. There’s also theprice: the standard Prius rangekicks off at £21,600, which isa massive £6,295 cheaper.Still, the £27,895 PriusPlug-in is based on the top-

spec T Spirit, so you getplenty of kit for the money,including sat-nav, Bluetooth,a head-up display, JBL stereoand leather seats.The driving experience is

near-identical, too. You canswitch between full EV andhybrid modes, an EV Citysetting – which requires amore forceful right foot to getthe petrol engine to cut in –and an Eco mode that makesthe throttle softer to conserveenergy.The steering is accurate and

light, the ride comfortable(even though it thumps a bitover bumps) and overall thePrius is easy to drive. Theonly real negative is the dronefrom the engine due to theCVT gearbox, but that’s thesame with the regular car.The big question is whether

the Plug-in is worth the extra?You’ll have to do your

sums. If you do frequent shorttrips, you’ll hardly spendanything on petrol. Plus,

drivers will benefit from thelikely drop in the threshold forroad tax exemption from99g/km to 85g/km, and thosein London will be able to cashin when the Congestion

Charge threshold falls to80g/km at the end of this year.Outside the capital,

however, you’re probably stillbetter off with the regularPrius.

Saturday 21st July – Match Sponsor– Chadwicks Fine Food EmporiumStandish Cricket Club’s 1st XI made the shortjourney to Blackrod to play Blackrod 1st XL.For once, the weather was perfect for cricket andStandish were hopeful they could win back-to-back games and do the double over their localrivals.Standish batted first and opener UsmanKhushnood hit a superb 43 whilst captain SamHeeley hit 50 helping Standish to a modest total of144 for eight from their 48 overs.Thusendra De Zoysa, Blackrod’s pro took fourfor 38 and A Bhojani four for 79 helping Blackrodtake the spoils and ease to victory in only the 33rdover.Standish 2nd XI played the reverse fixtureagainst Blackrod 2nd XI at Green Lane.Standish batted first, and it didn’t start well, asopener Nick Smith was caught first ball of thematch for a diamond duck.Rob Cobley top scored with 36 and ElliotChapman made 28 runs, pushing Standish to avery average 116 all out in only the 36th over.Blackrod opener P Wheeler scored 65accompanied by Zack Burton’s 38 runs to helpBlackrod cruise to victory in the 34th over with120 for two.Standish used seven bowlers in pursuit ofwickets withAndy Fox and Elliot Chapman takinga wicket each.

FORMER VETERANS ofWigan Rugby Union Clubcontinued their summercharity bike ridingcampaign when over fiftyriders cycled from HigherWheelton, near Blackburn,to Sam’s Bar Scholes.The ride was for the StevePrescott Foundation, whichsupports Christies and TryAssist. COACHES, TEAMS and sports clubsacross the borough are being urged tosend in their nominations for the 12thannual Wigan Borough Sports Awards.Organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s(WLCT) Sports Development Unit, the formal eveningplanned at the DW Stadium on Friday 12 October is acelebration of the borough’s unsung sporting heroes.This year residents can nominate members of thesporting community for their outstanding contributionto sport in seven categories:

Club of the year, Coach of the year, Volunteer ofthe year, Sports Achiever of the year, Disabledsports achiever of the year, Unsung hero in sport,Team of the year.This year’s awards will be presented by Wigan’s ownJenny Meadows. Jenny who has won medals at World,European and National Championship in the 800metres was also named Sports Achiever of the Year atthe Awards Ceremony back in 2009.She said: “'I would not be where I am today withoutthe fantastic support of my club, coaches, volunteersand the other amazing people who work tirelesslybehind the scenes of voluntary sport.
