THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ STUDENTS’ MASTERY OF

SIMPLE PAST TENSE AND THEIR ABILITY IN WRITING ANECDOTE AT

THE EIGHTH GRADE OF MTSN 2 PALANGKA RAYA

ABSTRACT

This research is about the correlation between students’ mastery of simple past

tense and their ability in writing anecdote at the eight grade of MTsN 2 Palangkaraya

in academic year 2016/2017.

The research was done because of students’ problem in writing ability, and it

was limited in anecdote text. The objective of the study where to find out simple past

tense mastery, writing ability in anecdote text and wheter there was any correation

between simple past tense mastery and writing ability in anecdote text. The

hypothesis of researcher was; Ha: there is correlation between students’ mastery of

simple past tense and their ability in anecdote text, and Ho: There is no correlation

between students’ mastery of simple past tense and their ability in writing anecdote.

The research was a quantitative research. The population of the study were 288

students of the eight grade of MTsN 2 Palangkaraya. The instrument used was a test.

The researcher gave grammar text and writing test. Type of grammar test was

multiple choice and writing test was essay test which asked students to make sentence

into paragraph.

The total score of simple past tense test (Variable X) = 3536 and the total score

of Writing test (Variable Y) = 4239.5 and the calculation of two variables was

249873. It was calculated by using Pearson product moment and the result the data of

analysis the data shows that the correlation coefficient between variable X and

variable Y was 0.987 while the significance standard 5% was rtable = 0,304, so rxy <

rtable (0,987 > 0,304). the significance standard 1% was rtable = 0,393, so rxy > rtable

(0,987 < 0,393). The criteria of correlation between two variables was 0,420 there

was average correlation. Then, the score of KP (determinat coefficient score) or

contribution of variable X and Variable Y was 97.4169%. It concluded that Grammar

mastery gave contributes 97.4169%. to writing ability produced by students of the

eighth grade students MTsN 2 Palangka Raya.

The data shows that Tvalue was higher than rtable. So, it proved that Ha stated there

was correlation between variable X and variable Y (Ha was accepted) and Ho stated

there was no correlation between variable X and variable Y (Ho was rejected).

HUBUNGAN ANTARA PENGUASAAN SISWA TERHADAP SIMPLE PAST

TENSE DAN KEMAMPUAN MEREKA DALAM MENULIS TEKS

ANEKDOT PADA KELAS VIII DI MTSN 2 PALANGKA RAYA

ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini membahas tentang hubungan antara penguasaan siswa terhadap

simple past tense dan kemampuan mereka dalam menulis teks anekdot pada kelas

delapan MTsN 2 Palangka Raya tahun ajaran 2016/2017.

Penelitian ini telah selesai diteliti dan dibatasi dalam teks anekdot. Sasaran

penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan penguasaan simple past tense, kemampuan

menulis dalam teks anekot, apakah ada hubungan nya antara penguasaan simple past

tense dan kemampuan siswa dalam penulisan teks anekdot. Hypothesis penulis

adalah; Ha: Ada hubungan antara penguasaan siswa terhadap simple past tense dan

kemampuan mereka dalam penulisan teks anekdot, dan Ho: tidak ada hubungan

hubungan antara penguasaan siswa terhadap simple past tense dan kemampuan

mereka dalam penulisan teks anekdot.

Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif. Populasi dalam penelitian ini

berjumlah 288 siswa kelas delapan MTsN 2 Palangka Raya. Instrumen yang

digunakan adalah sebuah tes. Penulis memberikan tes grammar dan tes menulis. Jenis

tes grammar yang diberikan adalah pilihan ganda dan tes menulis menggunakan essay

yang mana siswa akan diminta untuk membuat sebuah paragrap.

Toal nilai dari test grammar (Variabel X) = 3536 dan total nilai test menulis

(Variabel Y) = 4239.5 san jumlah hitungan dari kedua variabel adalah 249873.

Jumlah ini didapat menggunakan product moment pearson dan data analisis nya

menunjukkan bahwa korelasi koefisien antara variabel x dan variabel y adalah 0.987

dimana standar signifian 5% adalah rtable= 0.393, maka rxy > rtable (0,987 < 0,393).

Kriteria korelasi antara kedua variabel adalah 0.420 merupakan nilai rata- rata

korelasi. Maka, nilai KP (menentukan nilai koefisien) atau kontribusi pada variabel X

dan variabel Y adalah 97.4169%. Ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa penguasaan simple

past tense memberikan kontribusi sebanyak 97.4169% kepada kemapuan menulis

yang dihasilkan siswa kelas delapan MTsN 2 Palangka Raya.

Data menunjukan bahwa Tvalue lebih tinggi dari pada rtable. Jadi, ini menbuktikan

bahwa pernyataan Ha adalah adanya korelasi antara vaiabel X dan variabel Y (Ha

diterima) dan pernyataan Ho bhawa tidak ada hubungan antara X dan Y (Ho ditolak).

Kata kunci: simple past tense, menulis, kemampuan, dan teks anekdot.

CURRICULUM VITAE

Nur Hikmah was born on October 16th, 1993 in

Pangkalanbun, Central Borneo. She is a daughter

from Drs. Rusman Mallapi, S.H., M.H., and Faryani.

She has two brothers namely Khairul Umam and

Bustanul Arifin.

She graduated from MIN Melayu Muara Teweh in 2005. Then, she attended MTs

Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Alabio ( East Borneo ) 2005-2008. She continued her

study at MAN Muara Teweh and took Science program and finished her study in

2011. In order to be English teacher, she entered the State Islamic College of Palangka

Raya in 2011 which now it becomes IAIN Palangka Raya, and she graduates on 2016.
