The Core Values of WHPS
Ryan Sweetlove
Issue Number 34
SPRING 2016
On Wednesday 2 November, a special assembly took place to unveil the 2016 Grade Seven
gift. The boys and their parents, ably supported by the WHPS community were involved in
fundraising, with the express purpose of providing the school with a gift that would be
timeless and resonate with us all.
The values which are instilled in our boys both at school and at home are very important.
WHPS has six core values which form part of the very fabric of our school:
APPRECIATION
COURAGE
INTEGRITY
PASSION
RESPECT
RESPONSIBILITY
These values are the cornerstones of your sons’ education, and values by which we should all
live our lives.
The WHPS Theatre is a familiar place where the boys and their families assemble. It embodies
a sense of family, connection and togetherness. With this in mind, we felt that it would be
wholly appropriate for the six core values of our school to be permanently displayed at the
front of the Theatre, on either side of the stage. The gift also included two new WHPS badges
which appear with the values, as well as the WHPS motto, Work Hard Play Straight. The
motto is now proudly displayed on the balcony wall. Lighting was also installed on the two
walls to draw attention to these six important words.
Our core values are like the chapters of a book about our lives and our school. They can best
be summarised by four words, four words that have come to define who we are as WHPSians
- Work Hard Play Straight. From Old boys and past parents, to all members of the WHPS com-
munity, let us uphold these wonderful values and defend them fiercely.
Thank you to the Grade Seven boys, their parents and the wider WHPS family for their
support in helping us realise this wonderful and lasting gift.

Six Core Values at WHPS
Appreciation
In the words of the song, Thankful, performed by Josh Groban, “It’s up to us to be the change, but even though we all
could do much more – There’s so much to be thankful for!”
“Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever
have enough” – Oprah Winfrey
Courage
Winston Churchill said, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and
listen.”
The boys at WHPS need courage in their daily lives: Courage on the first day of Grade; Courage when you are a new boy;
Courage to face the onset of High School; Courage to work hard and play straight.
“Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow.” -
Mary Anne Radmacher
Integrity
Our motto, Work Hard Play Straight, encapsulates the essence of integrity. Playing straight means allowing every aspect of
your life to be governed by honesty, resulting in a life of significance and a life of integrity.
Passion
Give of your best – that is all anyone can ask of you. Be the WHPS fire! Embrace everything enthusiastically. Have passion
for everything.
Respect
Louis Armstrong, the legendary singer, sings about the wonderful world in which we live: the clouds of white; the bright
blessed day, the dark sacred night; the colourful faces of people going by. This moving, emotional and iconic piece of music,
although first released 49 years ago, has never dated. It has a hopeful, optimistic tone and helps us to feel positive about
the future. It is immersed in values. I have heard this song many times but I realise now that it has so much to do with
respect:
Respect of each other - “I see friends shaking hands, saying how do you do. What they really saying is, I Love you”.
Respect of our environment - “I see trees of green, red roses too. I see them bloom, for me and for you. And I think to
myself, what a wonderful world”.
Responsibility
Responsibility, our sixth value, may be last, but it’s certainly not least. Responsibility expects the following from us:
Taking charge of our lives
Looking after ourselves, our health, our possessions and one another
Never looking for excuses but rather solutions
Not blaming our parents, our teachers, the ref, or our circumstances
Realising that our happiness and our success is in our hands
Taking the time to look out for others

Pre-Prep Play: A Night at the Circus
The highlight of the children’s school year is dressing up and performing at the Pre-Prep concert! This
year, the audience was entertained with a “Night at the Circus”. The excitement and enjoyment that the
children were having was evident on the stage. Ponies galloping around in their cute bright outfits.
Trapeze artist twisting and turning showing their nimble nature. Clowns bouncing around to evoke
laughter. Our “big” brown bears dancing around. Magicians pulling tricks out of their hats. The mighty
lions jumping through “fire” rings. Fierce tigers showing their strength. Monkey business filled the air as
they showed us tricks. The Ticket Master and Popcorn thrilled the audience with their “Applaud” signs.
The happy family entertained us all as they travelled to the circus. All this accompanied by lots of funny
moments, lovely songs and dance made for an entertaining piece of theatre.
Once the concert was over, we moved to the Pre-Prep play area for a picnic decorated with fairy lights,
lanterns and a photo booth. It was certainly a special night to remember. Well done to all our little
WHPSians.

Gr 1: Learning about Money
Given how important financial skills are to navigating life it is essential that we teach our children about
money. The Gr 1’s are currently learning some basic concepts about money.
Gr 2: Measuring
The Gr 2 boys have been learning about different types of units of measurement. They had great fun in
and out of the classroom measuring various objects using their arm, legs, hands, fingers, feet and
thumbs.
The world is the true classroom. The most rewarding and important
type of learning is through experience, seeing something with your own eyes.

Gr 7: International Day
The Grade Seven boys held an International Day to showcase the various countries that they have studied. They
set up lovely stalls to attract their customers. There was a wonderful selection of delicious foods and drinks
available. The games also proved to be popular.
A portion of the boys’ profits will be donated to the Good Morning Angels project.
Well done to the Grade Sevens and thanks to the staff, boys and parents for their support.

Christmas Shoeboxes
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Senior Prize Giving, 05 December, 17h30
After much discussion we have decided to change the time at which the Senior Prize Giving will start this year.
This decision was made in the best interests of the boys in an attempt to ensure that the evening does not run
too late.
The Senior Prep Prize Giving will now start at 17h30 and we should therefore be able to be finished before
20:00. Please kindly take note of this and amend your diaries. A letter has also been sent home with each Gr 4-7
boys.
As we approach the time of year when we start thinking about Christmas, we are mindful of those who are less
fortunate!
The boys in Grade 1-7 are divided into WHPS Family groups. Each group has a staff member to care for them.
These Families meet throughout the year and develop a close relationship with one another. The older boys have
‘little brothers’ to look out for, and little boys get to know their ‘big brothers’. Each WHPS Family group was
given the names of two children for whom they packed and decorated lovely Christmas gifts. Each of the Grade
0 boys packed and wrapped their own shoebox at home.
The gifts were specially selected for the children in the Day Care and Aftercare Centres at
the Bishop Jo Seoka Centre. St Francis Anglican Church communicated with the Centre and
provided WHPS with the names of the children. Mr Koekemoer and his class of Grade 6
boys will be attending the Christmas party on the 25th November. They will distribute the
personalised gifts and spend some time playing with the children.
A special thank you to all the boys, their parents and the WHPS staff for their contribution.
