Light Aviation = 2-4 seats aircraft
MTOM up to 2000kg
Mainly used in
Sport&Recreational Aviation
Could be Annex II or EASA
“Big” Aviation = EASA certified
MTOM > 2000 kg
Traditional Czech Aviation Industry

Success of Czech Light Aviation
Key Factors
long aviation tradition in Czech Republic
limited access to the flying during socialist
time (very limited for power flying)
a lot of people „hungry“ for flying not
restricted by previous rules
aviability of qualified of people after the
„big“ companies run into troubles in early
90-ties
14
Success of Czech Light Aviation
Key Factors
foundation of LAA CR in 1990 gave legal
framework for all microlight activities
including manufacturing
creation of a certification system within the
LAA ČR, offering the acceptable simplicity
of certification while providing safety to
aircraft design, building and operation.
15
Success of Czech Light Aviation
Light Aircraft Association of Czech Republic
LAA ČR is a competent authority for Certification,
Licensing and Operation of microlights in the
Czech Republic.
This covers paragliding, powered paragliding,
hang gliding, gyroplanes, helicopters, weight shift
and aerodynamically controlled microlight.
In this respect it is unique in Europe.
It was founded in 1990 and has 6 400 members
and registers 7 900 aircraft and 10 000 pilots.

Success of Czech Light Aviation
Czech Light Aviation Industry today
Production of light sport aircraft brings Czech
Republic among the top four countries in this
business in Europe, together with Germany, Italy
and France.
18 manufacturers of complete microlight and LSA
aircraft,
9 manufacturers of microlight aircraft parts and
subsystems
11 manufacturers of accessory

Sport & Recreational Aviation
= Enhancement of technical culture and
education
= Interest in flying and career in Aviation
brings
- Practical Pilot and Technical skills
- Enthusiasm
22
Universities and Sport &
Recreational Aviation
Combining lecture, theory and practice,
Research and Technical design assignments based on real-life needs of Aviation
Participation in aircraft & equipment development and testing for “small” manufacturers
Creating opportunity for Students’ hands-on flying and technical experience
= Source of experts (expert workforce?) with practical technical knowledge in Sport & Recreational Aviation suitable for the entire scope of Aviation industry
23
The Akademische Fliegergruppe (Akafieg)
on German universities in
Darmstadt, Stuttgart, Braunschweig, Aachen, Karlsruhe, Berlin, Munich, etc., serve as good example
Universities and Sport &

Research & Manufacturing in
Recreational & Sport Aviation
“Small” companies making ultra-light aircraft and sailplanes:
= Design laboratories, source of skill and experience;
flexibility of innovation
= Partnership and cooperation with technical universities
= Potential for cooperation in manufacturing of components for the “big” aviation industry
= Potential for manufacturing of non-aviation components

Without the „small“ there will be problems
for the „big“
