The Considered Eye

The following collection represents oneman’s decades’ long passion for the artof the Far East, a collection built aroundpersonal taste, a keen curiosity and aneducated eye. Introduced to the cultureand works of art of China whiletravelling abroad in the early 1970s, hisinterest in these exotic and beautifulobjects was fuelled by a fascination withthe scholarly items so evocative of apeople and culture. Dedicated tounderstanding objects within theirhistorical as well as cultural contexts, hewas particularly interested in exploringthe desirability these items held forWesterners, from the earliesttranscontinental traders to theunprecedented reach of the Dutch EastIndies Company through the 17th and18th centuries. Other areas ofconcentration in the larger collection areEuropean porcelain and early bronzes,English silver and coins, and Modernand Contemporary Art, but it is theworks originating in the Orient that firedhis imagination.

The first exhibition to make an impactwas at Douglas J.K. Wright Ltd OrientalArt in 1974 featuring 18th and 19thcentury jade, and another in 1978featuring painted enamels at theAshmolean Museum. These helped formthe initial direction for the collection andwere important in providing aframework on which to build. Anothermajor influence was a museumexhibition of snuff bottles which made alasting impression with its impressivearray of techniques, colours, and

Percival David Collection and the BritishMuseum were favourite venues forthese self-guided tutorials, as were visitsto the Victoria & Albert Museum, andthe Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.Further afield the Ethnographic Museumin Copenhagen, the Swedish Pavilion inDrottningholm, Sweden and the PhoenixArt Museum exhibition of the RobertClague collections were all favourites.

A trip to Japan ignited a new directionfor the collection, with the same zealapplied to snuff bottles and jades nowput focused on netsukes of the Meijiperiod. Their tactile qualities and three-dimensionality appealed to his aestheticsentiments. Also a favourite were worksby the Japan-based French printmakerPaul Jacoulet, who seemed to embodythe synthesis of Eastern and Westernartistic principles this collector found socompelling.

While the collection was built with greatcare and a considered eye over fortyyears, and has brought many years ofenjoyment in its acquisition, it has beendecided it is now time to turn thesebeautiful, timeless and treasured objectsover to a new generation of enthusiastsand connoisseurs.

materials involved. The exhibition“Chinese Works of Art from the Scholar’sStudy” at Spink & Son in New York Cityin 1986 was hugely impactful, as werethe series of exhibitions from 1983-1989by Spink & Son in London, “The MinorArts of China I-IV”. These exhibitions allhelped focus the collection as he soughtout scholar’s objects to be displayed inhis home and extensive offices. Inparticular he was drawn to the tactilenature of these objects, with a specialemphasis on jade carving with its coolhardness, colour variations, and carveddetails. Objects that could be held in thehand were a primary interest.Representations of the crab are a re-occurring theme as well as this was thecollector’s zodiacal sign, and can befound represented in multipleincarnations throughout the collection.

Frequent international trips as part ofhis professional life provided theopportunity to combine business withpleasure, and no trip was completewithout venturing out to visit the localshops and dealers in search of the next“find”. The thrill of the chase was a wayof life and part of his daily ritual. Anincurable collector, items weresometimes packed away after purchase, and are only now being seen afterdecades hidden away. He was however, not merely an acquirer of objects, butdeveloped a true connoisseurship forthese pieces, spending time researchingand visiting important collectionsaround the world to improve his eye andbroaden his knowledge. We understand that your collection is worth more than the sum of its parts.

Collections sell better as collections. That belief is at the heart of our approach to auctioneering. Over the course of our long history,

we have seen this borne out time and time again: from the contents of grand homes to corporate collections, from contemporary

art to Chinese snuff bottles; there is little we have not handled and sold well.

Each collection is unique and often has an emotional connection to the owners who create or inherit them. Our team work closely

with our clients to provide a carefully tailored approach to the sale of their collections.

Personal, passionate and professional - we deliver outstanding results.
