International Concrete Repair Institute The Connection Carolinas Chapter August 2007 President’s Message Greg Tierney - Gregory J. Tierney, P.E. In This Issue •Summer Conference Photos •Fall Convention Details Greg As usual, summer is flying by. I hope you and your families are enjoying the summer season, and each other’s company! The Board of Directors for ICRI Carolinas Chap- ter recently held our summer board meeting in Pinehurst, North Carolina on July 19, 2007. We would like to thank Dave Powers and the Euclid Chemical Company for ar - ranging, and sponsoring, the conference meeting room at the Little River Golf and Conference Center. The meeting was very productive, and this edition of the President’s Message will share some of the activities of the Board. The Board has reinstated the Student Scholarship Award. The amount of the award is $1,500.00. Eligible students must be in college, and studying concrete design or concrete repair. For more information regarding this scholarship, please visit our website at www.icricarolinas.org, or call Bryan Wood at (336) 855-0993. The Carolinas Chapter of ICRI is planning a joint scholarship golf tournament with the Waterproofing Contractors Associa- tion (WCA) to be held on the Thursday before the 2008 Sum- mer Conference. The proceeds from the golf tournament are to be split between the ICRI’s and the WCA’s Student Scholar- ship funds. The Board is in the process of preparing a program that can be taken “on the road”, and presented to different groups. This presentation will introduce ICRI to those not familiar with our organization. We hope to educate students, teachers, building owners, building managers and other professional and trade associations regarding the services and knowledge that ICRI has to offer. These actions are being taken to advance our Chapter’s goal to increase the awareness of ICRI with concrete repair related industries. Any member who has photographs of poor property conditions prior to repairs, repair techniques and good property conditions after repairs, please contact Bryan Wood at (336) 855-0993. Also, if you know of any organizations that might be interested in our presentation, please contact me (Greg Tierney) at (919) 362-1668. The Carolinas “Project of the Year” submissions are due by September 15, 2007. Our Carolinas members have been in- volved with some great projects. It’s time to get a little industry credit for your hard work. For more information, please visit our web site at www.icricarolinas.org and click on the “Chapter Information”/ “Project of the Year” tabs, or call Jim Hadley at Beachwood Golf Club www.icricarolinas.org (704) 947-2430. The submission process has been streamlined, and takes very little time to complete. The Board would like to encourage any members who are not already Chapter Sponsors, to become Chapter Sponsors. The support of Chapter Sponsors enables us to hold our conferences at great venues, with good food and fine accommodations, and keep our conference fees at reasonable rates. Any new 2008 Chapter Sponsorships received by August 31, 2007 will be in- cluded, at no cost, in the Fall Conference and the Fall Newsletter. If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Andrews at (919) 870-0315. As always, we would like to thank all of our Corpo- rate Sponsors for their support. Speaking of the Fall Conference, our Fall Conference will be held on October 12 and 13, 2007 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The conference is entitled “The Science of Concrete Repair”. Our speakers will be presenting information regarding concrete sur- face preparation and repair material selection. Case studies of balcony repair projects are also on the agenda. The final session will be a round table discussion of repair materials, design and installation from the perspective of the Contractor, the Engineer and the Manufacturer. Please note, we will have the usual golf outing and fishing trip planned for Friday afternoon. New this year is a bicycle (manual) trip through the countryside. It’s always fun to bring your family, and stay an extra day at the beach. Website Information: After the Fall Conference, a speaker topic survey will be placed on our website (www.icricarolinas.org) so we can get our membership’s input regarding future conference topics. Please participate, we sincerely want your input. Also, the American Concrete Institute’s Free Technical Guidelines for con- crete repair have been linked to the Carolinas website for easy downloading to your computer. Last, but not least, the Carolinas Chapter member firms can now put a direct link to the Carolinas website on their websites. For more information, contact Kelly Andrews at (919) 870-0315, or at [email protected]. It’s been a busy year. We look forward to seeing you at Myrtle Beach in October to increase our knowledge about concrete re- pair, see old and new friends, and enjoy some rest and relax- ation.

The fifth floor of the Speedway Club was the site of the 2007 Summer Conference….top shelf all the way.

The cockpit of the Car of Tomorrow, in case you are interested and want to try this….maybe next year.

The other option was a Ride Along at 160mph with a professional driver; Chapter Executive Director Kelly Andrews couldn’t resist.

One of the options was driving laps yourself; guest speaker and past ICRI National President Dennis Pinelle gets instructions on getting in his car.

Back at the poolside reception, Brian Shelton, Jim Harris, Ken Johnson and Dave Powers share stories and sample one of the NASCAR sponsor’s products.

Jim Hadley, Zeb Wells and Gary Moore enjoy time together poolside at the conference reception.

Dennis Pinelle suited up, in the car and in the Winners Circle, where he and the conference deserved to be.

Chapter Board members Keith Smith of Western Waterproofing and Scott Davis of Sherwin Wil-liams visit with BASF’s Dan Beuker.

Kevin Casey of Kenseal and Robert Thaxton of Carolinas Restoration and Waterproofing exchange a few tales by the pool.

TRADING STORIES AND PAINT...

Gene Nichols and Buddy Creech of Tech Fab have staked out the sweet spot: shade, food and drink all at one place.

Coming South for the summer? Rob Pusheck (seated) of Maryland and Dennis Pinelle of Boston (blue jeans) chat in the foreground while Keith Harrison and Lisa and Doug Saunders visit in the background.

Yes, that distinguished looking gentleman in the dress shirt and tie is Mike Parker from SKA…can’t decide if he’s coming from court or going on a date.

AT LOWE’S MOTOR SPEEDWAY

AT LOWE’S MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Three from Western Waterproofing: Dave Stur-devant, Keith Smith and James Anzalone.

Walter Starke of Tucker Kirby check’s out the notes (what notes??) from Gary Cox of Kenseal.

Euclid’s Dave Powers and Ben Smith of IQ Con-tracting getting ready to get down to work.

Part of the ten Sutton Kinnerly staff present for the conference: Jennifer Evans, Alex Montgomery and Greg Issacs. Great support, SKA.

Buddy Creech and Gene Nichols of TechFab get settled in for the morning sessions.

The stands were packed and it was standing room only for the Summer Conference at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Kenseal’s Kevin Casey, Jed Daniels of Seager and Willie Goncharow of Guaranteed Supply are en-grossed with the morning presentation.

Secretary John Lambert introduces the confer-ence’s line-up of speakers.

Greg Tierney thanks Bank of America’s Mark Hur-ley after his great morning presentation.

A super lunch spread is enjoyed by Keith Har-rison, Carlton Steinmetz, John McDougall and Rick Price.

At the morning break, Dennis Pinelle shares a few driving stories with friends in the enclosed skybox overlooking the straightaway at Lowe’s.

Tom Hayes, Walter Starke and Dave Powers sample the goods on the buffet at The Speed-way Club.
