“Hail Him as Your Eternal King!”

Open Bible Evangelical Lutheran Church

Oxford, FL

NOTES ON TODAY’S SERVICE

Here is the culmination of our Lenten journey of repentance and renewal. Here is final preparation for the celebration of

the Paschal Mystery. The journey of Lent has prepared our hearts to ponder anew the Passion of our Lord and his glorious

triumph over death and grave. With repentant hearts we join our Lord’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, confident in his

everlasting rule, hailing him as our Eternal King. At the same time, we are mindful that he is our King because he is the

Messiah, the promised Son of David sent as the sacrificial Lamb of God. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the

Lord!

SERVICE OF THE WORD

OPENING HYMN: #540 “Rejoice, O Pilgrim Throng”

P: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy

Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

The Confession of Sins

P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his

dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment.

Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I

have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in

Jesus, my Savior, I pray; Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love.

Cleanse me from my sin and take away my guilt.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent

death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear

child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

P: In the peace of forgiveness, Let us praise the Lord.

OH, TASTE AND SEE

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray.

We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you redeemed us through

your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and

branches of palm in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him

with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,

now and forever.

WE HEAR GOD’S WORD

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Zechariah 9:9-10 page 1435 The exiled Jews find restoration not through battle with the enemy, but through a king in a time of peace. Here

is hope for the tiny remnant returning to rebuild the Lord’s temple. For this is the way of the Lord’s salvation:

Our gentle King comes with power to restore eternal peace.

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to

you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a

donkey. I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the

battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea

to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. NIV

Psalm 24

THE PSALM OF THE DAY: The Psalmist awaits the arrival of the King of Glory. This King owns the earth and

everything in it. He is the one who created this universe and we are just renting space from him while we are

here. May our hearts welcome this King!

Refrain (intro)

Psalm Tone

1. The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;

2. For he formed it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.

3. Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place?

4. He who has clean hands and a pure heart, he will receive blessing from God his Savior.

Refrain

5. Lift up your heads, O you gates;

Be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.

6. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD

mighty in battle.

7. Lift up your heads, O you gates;

Lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.

8. Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty—he is the King of glory.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain

THE EPISTLE LESSON: Philippians 2:5-11 (page 1768)

The homage due a king belongs to the Christ. At the name of Jesus-“human name for God above”-every knee

shall bow. For he has come to serve his people, not with armies and war machines, but with the obedient

sacrifice of his own life.

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not

consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very

nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he

humbled himself and becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God

exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the

name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every

tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. NIV

VERSE OF THE DAY C: The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

THE GOSPEL LESSON: Luke 19:28-40 (page 1581)

(Please stand out of reverence for Christ)

Our humble King comes in majesty. For he comes to do the will of the Father. He comes to bring salvation,

righteousness, and peace: peace in heaven and glory in the highest! He came as fulfillment of Scripture, as the

answer to mankind’s problem, as the Hope for all the true Israel of God.

After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As

he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of

Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village

ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which

no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you,

‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’ Those who were

sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were

untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the

colt?” They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on

it. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. When he came near the place

where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to

praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: “Blessed is the king who comes in

the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the

crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep

quiet, the stones will cry out.” NIV

SERMON: Luke 19:28-40 “More Than Just a Sunday Drive!”

Pastor Mark M. Schulz

CONFESSION OF FAITH: Apostles’ Creed (Please stand)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the

virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into

hell, the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of

sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THANK OFFERING The members of Open Bible congregation have joined together to do the Lord’s work in this

community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering that supports our

church’s ministry, but you are welcome to do so.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

P: Gracious heavenly Father who on this day, in the Person your Incarnate Son, presented yourself as creation’s

King. You did not come in power or vengeance as you will on the Last Day, but rather as the foot-washer

King. You came to be condemned by the creature (man), crowned with thorns, flogged and crucified so that

we rebel sinners could escape the condemnation we have earned.

C: O merciful God, give us your Holy Spirit so we may cry out HOSANNAS of true faith and

thankfulness.

P: Bless your church universal with leaders who do not seek worldly pomp and acclaim but follow King Jesus

alone. Give them wisdom from the Holy Scriptures that they may lead us into all truth. Bless this

congregation with inspired leadership that we may truly perceive the foot-washing King’s mission and

devote ourselves to it wholeheartedly. Uphold all who suffer for the name of Jesus. Embolden all who go to

those who face eternity without Christ with the Good News.

C: Dear Jesus, we want to be true followers. Help us to follow you in prayer, witness and service.

P: We confess and deplore that as a nation we have given our hearts to vanity and pleasure. The light of your

truth is being covered by the darkness of human philosophy and disobedience. Marriage and the family,

which you created, are under attack from every direction. We don’t deserve righteous leaders or your

protection. Never the less, forgive us merciful Father. Renew us individually and renew the churches of our

nation. Bring peace and safety to the streets of our land. Bless our leaders with wisdom like you gave to

Solomon to lead Israel. Protect all who serve in the Armed Forces.

C: Begin with me, Lord. Purge from my heart and life that idolatry of vanity and pleasure. Make me an

instrument of your will.

P: Jesus, great physician, who comforted the broken hearted, healed the sick and raised the dead, we bring to

you our sick, forsaken, straying, lonely, grieving and dying with the plea for your healing and help.

Especially we remember….

Hosanna, save us Lord. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it

is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who

trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

HYMN: #131 “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” vs 1, 2 & 5

P: Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your

Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness,

and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the

Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

P: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.

Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang;

Through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang;

To Jesus who had blessed them close-folded to His breast,

The children sang their praises, the simplest and the best.

CHOIR: Come sing hosanna, Come sing hosanna,

Come sing hosanna to the King!
