The media in water treatment is at the heart of the water treatment process. Media is the material that you placeinside of the water treatment unit so as to perform the chemical intereactions required to treat the water asdesired. It is of maximal importance that the media be chosen correctly so as to maximize the efficiency of thewater treatment unit. Depending on the application, a different media is chosen. Water Treatment, Reverse Osmosis: Brackish

Brackish water is a water that has a salt level between that of fresh water and that of sea water. To reduce thesalt level, a reverse osmosis unit can be used. Normally, it is installed right after a carbon filter.

Water Treatment, Pressurization

Pressurization units serve for controlling and maintaining pressure in sealed heating and chilled water systems.The water in sealed systems expands on heating (increasing pressure) and contracts (reducing pressure) oncooling. The pressurization unit continuously and automatically monitors system pressure and maintains it withinset limits. On heating, if pressure reaches the upper limit, the pressure control valve (spill valve) discharges waterto a covered atmospheric tank, the spill tank . Water enters the covered spill tank below surface level. This, andthe generally high temperature of the water in the spill tank, tend to minimize oxygen uptake. On cooling aspressure falls the unit’s pumps draw water from the spill tank into the system to maintain pressure. The unit alsomakes up water losses due to the small leaks, maintenance operations, vapour loss from glands etc.

Bio-Chemicals

Biochemicals are mainly used for grease degradation in grease interceptors in order to minimize the need formanual cleaning. This makes grease interceptors “automatic”, requiring minimal attention and maintenance.Biochemicals are also used for odor removal, lifting station maintenance, treatment of kitchen channels clogging.Add to all that, they can be applied to drains, waste water pipes, pumping stations, septic tanks, surfacescarrying organic deposits... All these applications are concentrated in, but not limited to, restaurants, hotels,nursing homes, & schools. Note that biochemicals come either as liquid materials or powdered formulationscontaining non-pathogenic micro-organisms and not requiring any special precaution. Akiki Engineering hasrecently integrated into its series the kitchen hoods treatment , which aims at keeping the internal walls of thehood clean from grease deposit.

WasteWater Treatment

The treatment of wastewater is brought by physical operations, chemical and biological processes that are groupedtogether to provide what is known as primary, secondary, and tertiary (or advanced) treatment respectively. AkikiEngineering was granted in 2007 the management for the design of the New Doha International Airport wastetreatment plant 28,000 m3/day. Nevertheless, rectangular packaged sewage plants (10 to 100 m3/day) are themain business line for us. Rectangular sewage plants are the immediate solution for rural areas.

Chemical Treatment, Closed Systems: Chemicals

Beirut down-town (a.k.a Solidere) maintenance contract for chilled closed system is managed, supplied, andexecuted by AEE since 1998, till today. Closed systems, despite from leakage or periodic maintenance, need tohave chemical protection against: (1) corrosion , (2) algae fouling, (3) scaling. It is a must to run manual testevery 3 to 4 months. We stock our own chemical products for immediate delivery in Lebanon and Syria.

Chemical Treatment, Closed Systems: Monitoring

Monitoring equipment are used while injecting chemicals in a closed system. Equipment can be manual orautomatic; however, manual control by our chemists is the tradition that we follow. Pulsatrol components withBlue White dosing pumps are mainly installed in the chilled closed system. Monitoring consists of (1) watermake-up through a flowmeter and (2) addition of antiscale/anticorrosion imedieately when make-up does takeplace.

Chemical Treatment, Open Cooling Towers

The largest open cooling tower is the Beirut International Airport . Akiki Engineering did the yearly maintenancefor 3 years non-stop. Our scope was to supply the chemicals, monitor the water analysis, adjust the dosing whenneeded, and manual testing (on top of the pulsatrol automatic monitoring system).Chemicals are a must to avoid: (1) scale & corrosion in chiller heat exchanger, (2) fouling from hi salinity due toevaporation or from mud due to the open cooling tower, (3) algae build-up on inner walls of pipes. Lately, AEEintroduced the side-stream filtration of the cooling tower basin, which is becoming a recurring requirement in thegulf area. In fact, few projects did implement such treatment, e.g. we supplied the Marina Tower site in Beirut.
