THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS Vol. XII STOW, OHIO, DECEMBER 28, 1945 No. 52 A WORD TO THE LONELY Here's an excerpt from "The Asiatics" by Frederick Profeasch: Mian is a lonely creature. lit's taken me a long time to make sure of it and it's been a sad process . . . I've always instinctively reached out toward people. I'd Want to see into them and let them see into me. I'd wian't to become part of them and let them be part of me. But something always happened. It would never work out properly. They'd resent it if I detected a weakness in them . . . and they'd grow bored and contemptuous if I showed them my weaknesses. Al- ways. Intimacy scared fheim . . . We're all lonely little souls; we've all got to work out our own salva- tion. The word "lonely" does not oc- cur in the Bible; but its equivalent, "alone" appears there frequently. Its first use is in connection with God'is provision against man's lone- liness. "And the Lord God said, It is not good that the m ! an should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him." When God presented that which He had made to Adam, he said: "This is now bone of my bones, and flash of my fleish: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave into his wife; and fhev shall be one flesh" (Genesis 2:18-24.) It wlas not the intention of God that a "dark cell of loneliness" should wall His creature in. "True," says one. "But although marriage is the closest bond of all —.and although one is suitably married and the dlayis are filled with love and happy association-— a consciousness of lonelineisis grips one." That condition can only exist be- cause sin has come into the world and permeated all phases of man's earthly existence. lit was not so or- iginally. Frederick Prokosdh implies that a perfect plarltner must be found before loneliness will cease. O'ne that you can see into and that can see inlto you—one that you will be- come part of, and that will become part of you—one in whom there is no weakness—yet one that can un- derstand the confessions of weak- ness in you—and one that will not be scared at intimacy. iSiuich a perfect one can only be found in the Lord Jesus Christ! If ever anyone knew loneliness in its sitark reality it was the Lord Jesus. He knew what it was to be li'ft alone by man; and on the cross He cried: "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" (Mark 15:154) He certainly can see into us! But what about s eeing into Him ? We know essential deity is His— He is infinite in being— yet His character and conduct are so per- fectly transparent that one desir- ous of looking into Him experienc- es no difficulty in perceiving Him to be "altogether lovely." And as for becoming part of Him and Be of us, ponder His disciples: "Ye in Me, and I in you!" (John 14:20). There is no w.eaknesis in' Him, and He never grows bored and con- temptuous when we acknowledge our weakness to Him. There is no posisibility of inti- macy scaring Him, for He already knows us infinitely better than we know ourselves. He has made it possible for us to enjoy Him as our perfect part- ner, because He shed His precious blood fior the remission of our sin's. And in resurrection, after assur- ing us that all power in heaven, and earth has been giiven to Him, He savs: "Lo, I am with you always" (Matthew 28:20). Again He said: "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (He- brews 13:5) "I've always instinctively reach- ed out toward people" savs the author of "The Asiatics." This is well enough in its place, but has there been that superior thing of reaching out by faith toward the adorable Lord Jesus Christ? "Christ liveth in me" is the only real preventive of loneliness. Tom M. Oilison in the Doorstep Evangel.

A WORD TO T H E L O N E L Y

Here ' s an excerpt f r o m "The Asia t ics" by Freder ick Profeasch:

Mian is a lonely c rea tu re . lit's t a k e n me a long t ime to make su re of i t and i t ' s been a sad process . . . I 've a lways inst inct ively reached out toward people. I 'd Want to see into them and let them see into me. I'd wian't to become pa r t of them and let them be p a r t of me. But something a lways happened. It would never work out proper ly . They'd resent it if I detected a weakness in them . . . and they 'd grow bored and contemptuous if I showed them my weaknesses . Al-ways. In t imacy scared fheim . . . We ' re all lonely l i t t le souls; we've all got to work out our own salva-tion.

The word " lonely" does not oc-cur in the Bible; but i ts equivalent , "a lone" appear s the re f r equen t ly .

I ts f i r s t use is in connection with God'is provision aga ins t man ' s lone-liness.

"And the Lord God said, I t is not good t h a t the m!an should be alone; I will make him an help meet f o r him."

When God presented t h a t which He had made to Adam, he said: "This is now bone of my bones, and f lash of my fleish: she shal l be called Woman, because she was t aken out of Man."

"There fo re shall a man leave his f a t h e r and his mother , and shall cleave into his wi fe ; and f h e v shall be one f l e s h " (Genesis 2:18-24.)

It wlas not the intent ion of God tha t a "da rk cell of lonel iness" should wall His c rea tu re in.

"True , " says one. "Bu t a l though m a r r i a g e is the closest bond of all —.and a l though one is sui tably mar r i ed and the dlayis a re fi l led with love and happy association-— a consciousness of lonelineisis g r ips one."

Tha t condition can only exist be-cause sin h a s come into the world and permeated all phases of man ' s ear th ly existence. lit was not so or-iginally.

Freder ick Prokosdh implies t h a t a per fec t plarltner mus t be found before loneliness will cease. O'ne

tha t you can see into and t h a t can see inlto you—one t h a t you will be-come p a r t of, and t h a t will become p a r t of you—one in whom there is no weakness—yet one t h a t can un-ders tand the confessions of weak-ness in you—and one t h a t will not be scared a t in t imacy.

iSiuich a p e r f e c t one can only be found in the Lord J e sus Chr is t !

If ever anyone knew loneliness in its sitark rea l i ty i t was the Lord Jesus . He knew wha t it was to be li 'f t alone by man ; and on the cross He cried: "My God, My God, why has t Thou f o r s a k e n M e ? " (Mark 15:154)

He cer ta in ly can see into us! But w h a t about s eeing in to Him ? We know essent ia l deity is His— He is inf ini te in be ing— yet His charac te r and conduct are so per-fectly t r a n s p a r e n t t h a t one desir-ous of looking into Him experienc-es no d i f f icu l ty in perceiving Him to be "a l toge the r lovely."

And as f o r becoming p a r t of Him and B e of us, ponder His disciples: "Ye in Me, and I in you!" (John 14:20).

There is no w.eaknesis in' Him, and He never g rows bored and con-t emptuous when we acknowledge our weakness to Him.

There is no posisibility of inti-macy scar ing Him, fo r He a l ready knows us inf ini te ly be t t e r than we know ourselves.

He has made it possible fo r us to enjoy Him as our pe r fec t pa r t -ner , because He shed His precious blood fior the remission of our sin's.

And in resur rec t ion , a f t e r a s su r -ing us t h a t all power in heaven, and ea r th h a s been giiven t o Him, He savs : "Lo, I am with you a lways" (Mat thew 28:20).

Again He said: "I will never leave thee, nor f o r s ake thee" (He-brews 13:5)

"I 've a lways inst inct ively reach-ed out toward people" savs the au thor of "The Asia t ics ." This is well enough in its place, but has there been t h a t super ior t h i n g of reaching out by f a i t h toward the adorable Lord J e sus Chr i s t ?

"Chr i s t l iveth in m e " is the only real prevent ive of loneliness.

RANK For some time I have wanted to

write an article about the rank of the boys who are coming back f rom the service. I know it is a mat te r of family pride to have a boy come back as a Captain, but what abo-ut the neighbor 's boy who served just as long and shows a single stripe on his sleeve when he is discharg-ed. One can get a very wrong im-pression of the relative worth of these two men to society if he takes their army rank's as the only yardstick. I admit tha t the private has net received his jus t share of publicity. One has only to look in the magazir.ias; the pictures and stories have entirely too many lieu-tenants and captains and not near-
