The Quilt Show (Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims) has given us permission to show one of their segments to the club. If you liked Simply Quilts, you will love this “next generation” of quilt education that they have pro- duced. The segments run longer, giving them time to explore subject matter more in depth. As can be expected of Alex Anderson, she does a good job at steering the subject matter in an interesting direction, as does Ricky Tims. The show has given our club passes to access their show online for a month. In addition, they have sent along a DVD of one season of The Quilt Show to be given as a door prize to one mem- ber that night. So, you won’t want to miss the chance to win the DVD! The segment being shown on May 8 is a presentation by Sue Spargo: “Folk Art in Fabric: Inspirations and Techniques”. Her style is colorful, whimsical, and full of techniques that would be easy to add to your own repertoire of skills. While she primarily works in wool, most of what she does can easily translate to cotton fabrics. Though Sue grew up in South Af- rica, she has been in the US for many years. The next meeting of CTQC is a bit different than the usual. The Quilt

Show (Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims) has given us permission to

show one of their segments to the club. If you liked Simply Quilts, you

will love this “next generation” of quilt education that they have pro-

duced. The segments run longer, giving them time to explore subject

matter more in depth. As can be expected of Alex Anderson, she does a

good job at steering the subject matter in an interesting direction, as

does Ricky Tims. The show has given our club passes to access their

show online for a month. In addition, they have sent along a DVD of

one season of The Quilt Show to be given as a door prize to one mem-

ber that night. So, you won’t want to miss the chance to win the DVD!

The segment being shown on May 8 is a presentation by Sue Spargo:

“Folk Art in Fabric: Inspirations and Techniques”. Her style is colorful,

whimsical, and full of techniques that would be easy to add to your

own repertoire of skills. While she primarily works in wool, most of

what she does can easily translate to

cotton fabrics.

Though Sue grew up in South Af-

rica, she has been in the US for

many years. She teaches classes

around the country, teaches on

Craftsy, has published patterns and

books. For more on her techniques,

Quilters Club of America

http://www.quiltersclubofamerica.com/

For those of you who go to the computer when you need a break from the sewing machine,

the Quilters Club of America might be a place you want to explore. The site is a gathering of

quilters around the country who blog, share patterns, ask for and offer helpful advice, and

show off their latest creations. The club offers mystery quilt projects that have inspired more

than 100,000 posts and message boards on various quilting topics. In short, it is a place

where you can say, “Help! I’ve made a mistake”, or where you can look for new ideas to in-

spire you again.

It’s a fun site to explore while you drink your morning coffee (which, of course, you wouldn’t

drink while you are sewing!)

Winter’s Gate

Linda Colsh Everberg, Belgium Dated 2008

9 x 9 inches

IQSCM 2010.015.0011

A screen printed and gelatin plate monoprint

on cotton muslin, Winter’s Gate was created

by American artist Linda Colsh while she

was living in Belgium. This piece was made

with cotton fabric, gelatin-plate monoprint

printed by the artist, screenprinting made by

the artist from computer-altered photos and

acrylic paints with invisible polyester

thread.

Winter's Gate: End of autumn, they approach winter's bare and frosted gate and continue down the

path.

The series for which my work is best known focuses on the elderly. I collect images of real people,

taking inspiration from the streets. In places where I have traveled and lived (America, Asia, Europe),

I notice people who others ignore: the invisible ones who blend into the background noise of busy

lives. Anonymous to me, I develop their characters in my imagination, on my computer, and in my

notebooks.

Starting with plain cloth, I dye, paint and print backgrounds and images. Each artwork is a drama: I

place a character in a setting and add props that express plot, personality and themes. I design with

large shapes or wholecloth and simple machine quilting. Here, I screenprinted the figures and bare

tree on a gelatin-plate printed background.

The subject is three views of an old woman, who I photographed years ago in Berlin. She walked into

my viewfinder as I was photographing above-ground pipes. She has become a beloved alter ego onto

whom I can project my own thoughts and who carries my stories to those who view my work.

- Artist Statement

Winter’s Gate joined the International Quilt Study Center & Museum’s Permanent Collection in 2010 as

part of collection of Studio Art Quilt Associates member works, each measuring 9 x 9 inches and mounted

for display.

A selection of Colsh’s recent work is on display at the museum April 11-July 9, 2017, in Like Breath on Glass:

Studio Work by Linda Colsh. Visit the artist's website for more information.
